Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a parallel phase-only lensless optical correlator based on two pieces of Liquid Crystal on Silicon Spatial Light Modulators. Phase Fresnel Lens Array and specialized grating are implemented to realize multi-channel and multiplexed LOC. Experimental results of Chinese characters' recognitions are given as demonstration of proposed technique. High uniformity of processing channels has been verified by autocorrelation process of four same Chinese characters. The technique is programmable and adjustment of optical path could be realized without changing of optical setup. The implementations could be performed on the same configuration as single channel optical correlator without mechanical alternation.

Abstract:An optical correlator that utilizes one phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM) combined with a mirror is proposed and demonstrated. This system is compressed by displaying the input and filter pattern on different parts of the same SLM. The background noise is separated from the correlation signal by superimposing a high-frequency carrier with the filter pattern except in the zero-frequency regions, which will improve the signal-to-noise ratio in pattern recognition. Our architecture is compact and the cost is relatively low by utilizing only one SLM.

Abstract:We present a novel scheme for the optical implementation of hit-miss transform (HMT) in one step with only one optical correlator. This scheme uses complementary-encoding to represent each pixel of binary images, in which a pixel is encoded with two cells and the encoding of pixels with value 1 is complementary to that of pixels with value 0. Using an incoherent optical correlator to perform correlation, the complementary-encoding hit-miss transform is demonstrated. The simulated results and experimental results are given.

Abstract:Using a morphological hit-miss transformation, an improved method for increasing the addressing accuracy of optical holographic associative memory was proposed. A scheme of an improved real-time holographic associative memory system is shown in the paper, which comprises a beam splitter, a photo triode, a electric amplifier, a summing circuit, a stop, an input and an output planes and a liquid crystal electro-optical switch. The associative output image using the improved system is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Since joint transform correlators based on amplitude light modulator have poor light efficiency and low cross-correlation peak, a displacement measurement method based on spatial light modulator is proposed. After the input images were coded by phase spatial light modulator, corresponding displacement between the adjacent two pictures could be detected through the joint transform correlator. Experiments were carried out with under-exposed images. The experimental results showed that phase joint transform correlators had better discrimination. The proposed technique is very effective for motion detection under circumstances of low illumination.

Abstract:The morphological hit–miss transform (HMT) has been proved an useful method for pattern recognition. Because of the inherent parallelism of the morphological transformations including the HMT, the optical implementation of which has attracted much attention. In this paper, we present an extensive complementary encoding method, by which the foreground and background information of an image are incorporated into a whole, and the hit–miss transform can be optically implemented by using one optical correlator in one step. Using a simple incoherent optical correlator to perform the correlation, the extensive complementary encoding HMT is demonstrated and experimental results are given.

Abstract:Planar optical correlators (POCs) can achieve smaller volume of optical system and hence have important applications to identify dynamic targets in complex scenarios. POCs, however, generally have serious astigmatism and optical efficiency loss introduced by its refractive lens with a zigzag optical beam. To conquer the disadvantages of POCs, we propose a type of binary optical planar-integrated optical correlator. The correlator incorporates two pieces of reflective binary optical lens as Fourier transform lens and one spatial light modulator as a programmable filter. The off-axis aberrations commonly occurred in POCs can be corrected by using reflective binary optical lens instead of refractive lens. As a model of hybrid numerical-optical correlator using optoelectronic interface, the proposal is helpful to improve the integration and flexibility and robustness of POCs.

Abstract:An optoelectronic morphological processor for industrial on-line inspection is presented in this paper. The principle of the processor is based on the morphological hit-miss transform. By using an extensive complementary encoding method, which combines the foreground and background of an image into a whole, the hit-miss transform, which usually needs three steps to perform, can be implemented in only one step. The optical implementation hardware is based on an incoherent optical correlator due to its compactness in structure and immunity to coherent noise. The experimental results are given.

Abstract:We present a compact parallel optical correlator (CPOC) based on joint transform correlation manipulation that can be used for various applications. Two innovative approaches are adopted to make the whole system more compact with a volume of 17×5×3cm3. Two demo systems, i.e., guidance of guided missile and on-orbit rendezvous and docking have been established. The experimental result showed that CPOC system currently operates at approximately 300 Hz and can accurately determine the positioning information when a 1024×768 pixel spatial light modulator (SLM) is employed.

Abstract:Electro-optical hybrid logic is a potential solution to implement both electrical and optical signal processing, which receives analog or digital, electrical or optical signals and produces logic signals in a desired manner. In light of the transfer matrix theory, we found that one can steer light into different output ports of a multimode interference coupler by controlling the phases in a multivalued manner on the image-extended arms. This implementation acts as an analog-to-digital convertor from electric domain to optical domain. Abstract:Novel planar folding optical correlator is proposed by means of micro-optical and binary optical techniques. The Fourier transform lenses, holographic matched filter, input plane and output plane are integrated on a common planar element. A reflective planar optical system is constructed by the correlator and a planar polarized mirror. The system structure and parameter design of this planar system are described, and a concrete model is proposed, with its volume reduced to about 12 cm3. At last, image recognition process of this correlator is simulated by using Fresnel diffractive method and gains excellent results, which proves the recognition capability of the system.

Abstract:A new joint transform correlation scheme for the accurate recognition of binary objects was presented, which used complementary-encoding method to code the reference and target images in the input plane. The aim of such encoding is to perform joint rank-order hit-or-miss transform in one step. With a high-level threshold value, a correct justification can be achieved from the correlated resultant image. The simulation results and experimental demonstration were listed.

Abstract:The theory optical logic coder based on multimode interference self-imaging principle is demonstrated.We concretely design a 1-D 2~3 bit optical logic coder using partial phase modulation method.According to beam propagation method,the simulation results obtained by Beamprop software are discussed and some input parameters are optimized.Different modulation methods produce different Boolean logic states with the extinction ratio higher than 11 dB.

Abstract:A new type of deconvolver using a hybrid optical-electronic joint transform correlator is proposed. The inverse intensity filter used for deconvolution can be synthesized with this hybrid architecture in real time mode. A computer simulation is performed to demonstrate its capability to deconvolute the convolution of two functions.

Abstract:In this paper, we present several methods to improve the processing speed of an optoelectronic morphological industrial inspection processor, which uses an incoherent correlator as its optical hardware and the extensive complementary encoding morphological hit-or-miss transform as its detection algorithm. The first method is using a multi-channel correlation scheme, in which four database images are processed simultaneously so that the LCD panel needs only update 25 times for a set of 100 images, for instance. The second method is using a postprocessing method for the optical correlation output plane. An absolute difference measurement (ADM) algorithm is applied for measuring the similarity of the optical correlation resultant images, and then the similarity between the tested and the reference image can be deduced. By this method, the complicated preprocessing procedure including the extensive complementary encoding can be simplified because we can directly deal with the gray-scale images. The third method is using a photoreactive correlator instead of the incoherent correlator so that there is no the update rate limitation of the LCD panel, which was a main problem facing any optoelectronic hybrid system.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply an extensive complementary encoding method, which has already been successfully used in an incoherent optical correlator based real-time target recognition processor to improve its discrimination ability, to a photorefractive crystal based Vander Lugt matched filter correlator for the same purpose. In this method, an original image and its complement image are regularly combined into an encoded image. The encoding process is applied to both the database images and the input target. The experimental results have proved that by using the extensive complementary encoding method, the discrimination ability of the photorefractive correlators can be improved effectively in a simple way.

Abstract:In this paper a novel method of realizing digital filters in an incoherent correlator is proposed in a shortly way. A novel gray-scale complementary encoding method is used to express the positive and negative numbers simultaneously. Digital filtering will be simplified into a convolution of the encoding images and filters followed by a subtraction operation. Based on the new method an Incoherent Optical Digital Filtering Unit (IODFU) is constituted. in the IODFU a liquid crystal spatial light modulator is used for displaying the gray-scale images to be analyzed and the digital filters at the same time. All the images and filters can be changed by computer-controlling for different destinations. The IODFU is very compact and the processing speed can get to 12 frames per second. At the end of this paper the optical experiments are given.

Abstract:Among a variety of optical correlators, the joint transform correlator (JTC) has some advantages over others and has been extensively studied. However, in some cases, a direct correlation of the input image with a reference image would not be able to find the matched pattern. Recently, morphological hit-or-miss transformation (HMT) has been used to improve the pattern recognition ability of JTC. In this paper we use the concepts of uncertain pixel to improve the distortion-invariant ability of morphological hit-or-miss transformation used in JTC. The novel method is called joint rank-order multi-value hit-or-miss transformation (JRMHMT), which reduces the decision effect of the pixels that is easily disturbed by rotation and scaling distortion. Without losing information of the input images, JRMHMT can realize the precision recognition between two images and has a better distortion-invariant ability in scaling and rotation than the ordinary HMT methods. The comparisons of JRMHMT with the ordinary HMT methods in theoretic analysis and experiments are given in this paper. Based on a single lens JTC and a novel multi-value complementary encoding method, joint rank-order multi-value hit-or-miss transformation correlator (JRMHMTC) is constructed for realized MVHMT in one step. The correlated result image can be thresholded with a high-level threshold so that correct justification can be achieved. The simulation results and experimental demonstrations are both listed.

Abstract:In this paper, an optical correlator which adopts planar integrated 2F structure and optimal tradeoff synthetic discriminant function filter is proposed to improve the system integration and the recognition ability. The specialized digital microlens is designed for the correlator to replace the physical lens. By the theoretical analysis, the structural design conditions and parameters of the correlator are given, and the system volume is 63.1 cm3 which is only half of the planar integrated 4F optical correlator. Moreover, simulations and experimental research works reveal that the correlator can achieve stable recognition to the input object of distortion with scaling (52%, 150%), rotation (-50°, +42°), and existed scaling (72%, 130%) and rotation (-36°, +38°) simultaneously. Theoretical analysis and experimental results indicate that the planar integrated optical correlator with compact structure and high integration has good performance of distortion invariant recognition.
