Abstract:By using independently developed sound vibration generating device,the measurement technology of dynamics characteristics of typical tubes for pressure measurements was developed,and the frequency response characteristics of typical tubes for fluctuating wind pressure measurements were measured.By using principle of sound vibrations,a multi-function sound vibration generating device was developed.Different pipes were excited by sine pressure waves,multi-point scanning technology was used to improve the sampling frequency for getting full curves of sine waves.Experimental results show that the experimental technique developed can be used to obtain high-frequency dynamic pressure signals and accurate frequency response curve for providing a basis for the error correction.
Measurement and Analysis of the Vibration Responses of Piano Soundboards with Different Structures

Abstract:The effect of structure on the vibration response was explored for four piano soundboards with different but commonly adopted structures. The vibration response was obtained using the free-vibration method, and the values of the dynamic modulus of elasticity and dynamic shear modulus obtained using the free-vibration frequency method (EF and GF) were compared with the dynamic modulus of elasticity obtained using the Euler beam method (EE) and dynamic shear modulus obtained using the free-plate torsional vibration method (GT), respectively. It was found that the soundboards with different structures had different vibration modes and that excitation at different locations highlighted different vibration modes. For all the soundboards analyzed, the EE and GT were higher than EF and GF by 2.2% and 24.3%, respectively. However, the trends of the results of these methods were the same. The four piano soundboards with different structures possessed varying dynamic moduli of elasticity and dynamic shear moduli. These rules are consistent with the grain directions of the soundboards and the anisotropy of the wood (the direction of the units of the soundboards). The results show that the vibration mode of the piano soundboard is complex. The dynamic elastic modulus of the soundboard can be calculated using the Euler beam method. The results provide a reference for studies on the vibration response, material selection, production technology, and testing of piano soundboards.

Abstract:A soundboard, as an important resonance component of a piano has been continuously studied in the past several decades. It is known that the variation of mass distribution on a soundboard could affect its vibration properties and the sound quality of a piano. However, those effects have been seldom investigated until now. In this paper, an experiment is carried out to study the effects of additional mass-blocks on a soundboard. Small pieces of metal blocks are pasted on several different locations on a soundboard, and a laser vibrometer is used to extract its mode shapes and spectrum under the excitation of an acoustic source with frequency ranges from 10 Hz to 1 kHz. The results show a notable difference of spectrum between mass-added cases and original in low frequencies, but little difference in high frequencies. It could be concluded that additional mass-block could greatly affect the energy of the low-mode of a soundboard.

Abstract:This study presents a visual model for analyzing the vibration modes of piano soundboards by combining the tools of finite element analysis and computer-aided design. Based on the predicted results from the model, changes of natural frequency and maximum displacement of the soundboard as a function of wood properties, structure, and rib size were discussed. Wood grain direction affected the mode shape of the soundboard. Among the 10 property factors investigated, density presented the greatest impact to the vibration mode of the soundboard followed by Young's modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio. Increasing the thickness of the resonance board and the use of ribs had positive impacts on the natural frequency of the soundboard. However, the amount of natural frequency was decreased for those that were lower than 100 Hz. Natural frequency increased as the intensity, density, and size of ribs increased. Rib height had a greater effect on the variation of natural frequency than the intensity, density, and rib width. In general, increases in rib intensity, density of wood species, and rib width presented negative effects on the maximum displacement.

Abstract:The geophone-limestone coupling problem is one of the important factors which influence quality of seismic data in marine carbonate outcrops area of South China. In this paper, using multi-freedom degree vibration system theoretical model, we analyze the response characters of geophone-limestone coupling system. Then combining the theoretical results with field test results, we compare seismic data collected from different geophone coupling modes and discuss the geophone-limestone coupling mechanism. The results show that it is "two degrees of freedom coupling vibration system" to make geophone spike insert into limestone ground. And the resonance frequency is very high and coupling system's influence is very little when making geophone spike insert into limestone ground tightly. But seismic acquisition efficiency is low using this geophone coupling mode. The results also show that it is "three degrees of freedom coupling vibration system" to bury geophone on the limestone ground using coupling mediums such as surface soil. And the seismic acquisition efficiency is high using this geophone coupling mode. However, when using the latter geophone coupling mode, we need to select proper coupling medium and reduce contact acreage between coupling medium and limestone ground and coupling medium's height in order to weaken the coupling resonance.

Abstract:The vibrations of the soundboard of an upright piano in playing condition are investigated. It is first shown that the linear part of the response is at least 50 dB above its nonlinear component at normal levels of vibration. Given this essentially linear response, a modal identification is performed in the mid-frequency domain [300-2500] Hz by means of a novel high resolution modal analysis technique (Ege, Boutillon and David, JSV, 2009). The modal density of the spruce board varies between 0.05 and 0.01 modes/Hz and the mean loss factor is found to be approximately 2%. Below 1.1 kHz, the modal density is very close to that of a homogeneous isotropic plate with clamped boundary conditions. Higher in frequency, the soundboard behaves as a set of waveguides defined by the ribs. A numerical determination of the modal shapes by a finite-element method confirms that the waves are localised between the ribs. The dispersion law in the plate above 1.1 kHz is derived from a simple waveguide model. We present how the acoustical coincidence scheme is modified in comparison with that of thin plates. The consequences in terms of radiation of the soundboard in the treble range of the instrument are also discussed.

Abstract:The piano soundboard transforms the string vibration into sound and therefore, its vibrations are of primary importance for the sound characteristics of the instrument. An original vibro-acoustical method is presented to isolate the soundboard nonlinearity from that of the exciting device (here: a loudspeaker) and to measure it. The nonlinear part of the soundboard response to an external excitation is quantitatively estimated for the first time, at \approx -40 dB below the linear part at the ff nuance. Given this essentially linear response, a modal identification is performed up to 3 kHz by means of a novel high resolution modal analysis technique (Ege et al., High-resolution modal analysis, JSV, 325(4-5), 2009). Modal dampings (which, so far, were unknown for the piano in this frequency range) are determined in the midfrequency domain where FFT-based methods fail to evaluate them with an acceptable precision. They turn out to be close to those imposed by wood. A finite-element modelling of the soundboard is also presented. The low-order modal shapes and the comparison between the corresponding experimental and numerical modal frequencies suggest that the boundary conditions can be considered as blocked, except at very low frequencies. The frequency-dependency of the modal density and the observation of modal shapes reveal two well-separated regimes. Below \approx 1 kHz, the soundboard vibrates more or less like a homogeneous plate. Above that limit, the structural waves are confined by ribs, as already noticed by several authors, and localised in restricted areas (one or a few inter-rib spaces), presumably due to a slightly irregular spacing of the ribs across the soundboard.

Abstract:The present work provides an experimental-numerical investigation into the effects of moisture content on the in-plane elastic constants of wood for the specific use of the construction of soundboards of musical instruments. The vibrational behavior of a rectangular plate of spruce has been observed using vibration testing under different humidity conditions. The use of a nondestructive test method permits direct examination of a material sample which will eventually become part of a real instrument. The proposed approach is intended to minimize the difference between the numerical and experimental dynamic response through an iterative process, which allows identifying the elastic characteristics of wood specimens. It has been demonstrated that the vibrational behavior of timber varies considerably with variations in humidity. However, not all elastic properties are equally affected by such changes. The most significant variation is found in the transverse elastic modulus, and consequently in resonance modes associated therewith.

Abstract:Abstract With the advancement of contemporary technology, there is an increasing demand for sophisticated tone libraries in intelligent and digital pianos. This paper introduces a virtual piano system based on timbre simulation. Drawing upon the articulation principles of the piano, a mathematical model is formulated to derive the equation governing string vibrations. This equation facilitates a comprehensive analysis of the components constituting piano timbre and establishes a model for synthesizing these timbres using a frequency envelope algorithm. The short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is utilized to extract features from the synthesized timbre and to accomplish its digital simulation. Subsequently, the integration of the piano’s timbre features with computer programming facilitates the comprehensive design of the virtual piano system. Performance testing and evaluation of the system reveal promising results: the detection rate for each musical piece exceeds 90%, with an average detection rate of 94.81% across ten pieces and an average deviation (Mean-D) of 3.35 in the scoring of 100 music samples. This research contributes to the flexibility in timbre editing, enhances the expressiveness of intelligent and digital pianos, and aims to elevate the music industry to new heights.

Abstract:One problem of the investigation of musical instruments concerns the statement of physical characteristics of the tone quality. By musical experts' collaboration, old Italian violins and modern ones have been classified according to their tonal quality and physically examined by obtaining their response curves. The best old Italian master violins show physical particularities of tone quality which modern violins do not generally have. They affect the sound-color, transient phenomena, and “carrying power”—very important properties. Within a comparatively small range, conditioned by different musical taste, we can state an optimum response curve of violins. Curves of good and bad violas and violincellos have been taken, but are not sufficient for stating optimum curves. Furthermore, we must try to find fit measures of violin making, by means of which the optimal physical characteristics of tone quality can be attained. Methods must be found for building these optimum qualities into new violins. Such factors as shape, thickness of material, and varnish, seem quite important, while the bass bar, sound post, bridge, and strings are of less importance. Comparisons are given between a violin made on the basis of these researches and a Stradivarius instrument.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to clarify the relationship between the vibration of violins made by Antonio Stradivari and the acoustic radiation around it. The highly precise geometry of the violin was determined with a micro-computed tomography scanner, and the material properties of the violin body (spruce and maple) were set as the orthotropic properties in the numerical simulation. Then, the numerical simulations coupling the vibrations by a forced oscillation on a bridge with the acoustic field pressure around the violin were performed. Furthermore, the sound pressure emanating in a huge rectangular box was successfully calculated by large scale computing and the open-source parallel acoustic analysis software.

Abstract:Several cases of the explanation of the phenomenon of standing waves in strings, there are few experimental measurement tools when demonstrating this phenomenon in a classroom, it is for this reason that we have implemented different forms to show how we can experimentally demonstrate the wave behavior of string vibration, where variations in the length, frequency and tension of the string have been made, with the purpose of showing this phenomenon more generally and clearly for students. In this work, we present the step-by-step the implementation of two experimental procedures of laboratory concerned with the study of wave strings, seeking as a primary objective to show students the experimental way of obtaining and measuring the number of bellies in a string in addition of being able to calculate both fundamentally and experimentally the fundamental frequency of each string by varying both its length and its tension using the resonance frequency. Finally, we present the respective experimental errors, for each of the assemblies and methods carried out in the laboratory to perform the measurements shown and registered in this work.

Preservation of the harmonic overtones in the violin family beyond Stradivari

Abstract:Three hundred years ago, Antonio Stradivari enjoyed the golden period of the violin making in the human history. Luthiers and researchers endeavor to study his legendary legacy. Unfortunately, a consensus that the present progress has reached his level remains lacking. Most of the instruments suffer from low sounding power and enigmatic deficit of harmonic overtones. In fact, there is significant energy dissipation in the acoustic couplings in the violin family, completely unaware to luthiers and researchers. The current acoustic mechanism is inefficient in resonance of the wooden plates and hence is the low rate of mechanical energy conversion to the desired sound. We propose a new method for the amelioration of the acoustic couplings to enhance the preservation of the overtone components up to 161% of the pristine and to reduce the instrumental dissipation intensity up to 3.8 dB off (73% off). It results in the tremendously improved sound projection, the shorter reaction time, the longer reverberation time, and consequently the enrichment of the timbre complexity. Our physical method is applicable to the violin family of all sizes and ages, including the Stradivari, and extendable to all string instruments.

Abstract:Aim: Timbre in piano performance plays a critical role in enhancing musical expression. However, timbre control in current piano performance education relies mostly on descriptive characterization, which involves large variations of interpretation. The current study aimed to mitigate the limitations by identifying quantitative indices with adequate precision to characterize piano timbre. Methods: A total of 24 sounds of G6 were recorded from 3 grand pianos, by 2 performers, and with 4 repetitions. The sounds were processed and analyzed with audio software for the frequencies and volumes of harmonic series in the spectrum curves. Ten quantitative timbre indices were calculated. Precision validation with statistical gage R&R analysis was conducted to gage the repeatability (between repetitions) and reproducibility (between performers) of the indices. The resultant percentage study variation (%SV) of an index must be ≤10% to be considered acceptable for characterizing piano timbre with enough precision. Results: Out of the 10 indices, 4 indices had acceptable precision in characterizing piano timbre with %SV ≤10%, including the square sum of relative volume (4.40%), the frequency-weighted arithmetic mean of relative volume (4.29%), the sum of relative volume (3.11%), and the frequency-weighted sum of relative volume (2.09%). The novel indices identified in the current research will provide valuable tools to advance the measurement and communication of timbre and advance music performance education.

Abstract:The impact of cutting the f -holes in a completed violin was investigated based on two measurable characteristics of the instrument. One of these aspects focused on the signature modes, while the other involved monitoring the graph of the bridge mobility. A particular emphasis was placed on analyzing this graph due to existing literature suggesting the connection of the bridge hill to the presence of f -holes. In the case of two real violins, bridge mobility was measured using an ultra-miniature accelerometer and an impact hammer. Concurrently, signature modes were recorded using Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry, an optical technique that performs well on rough surfaces; hence, the violins employed were intentionally left unvarnished. One of the violins lacked f -holes but included the rest of the structural elements. It was measured in stages as the f -holes were cut. The second violin adhered to a standard design but featured slightly wider f -holes, serving as a reference. Additionally, bridge mobility and signature modes were simulated for a finite element violin soundbox both with and without f -holes. Contrary to expectations, both the experiments and simulations revealed the emergence of the Bridge Hill even in the absence of f -holes. However, the alteration of the middle and high-frequency response was evident during the f -hole cutting process, accompanied by the observation of CBR as well as and modes.

Abstract:The qin (guqin, chi'in) is a seven-string zither of ancient lineage that is prominent in Chinese musical culture. The qin's history is intertwined with philosophy and folklore and its construction is replete with symbolism. The qin was associated with the Imperial aristocracy, and it remains an instrument of high culture. The qin is played with strings horizontal, and the soundbox is made in two halves; the front is usually carved out of paulownia and the back is a flat plate of catalpa. There are two sound holes in the back. It appears that no acoustical study of the qin has been published hitherto. This paper describes vibroacoustic measurements on five examples, the analysis of which reveals the qin's basic sound radiation mechanisms. At low frequencies the qin shows beam bending and torsional modes with some coupling to air in the cavity. At higher frequencies the radiation is dominated by a dense spectrum of mixed cavity and wood modes; the cavity modes are described by a one-dimensional transmission matrix model.

Abstract:Under the excitation of strings, the wooden structure of string instruments is generally assumed to undergo linear vibrations. As an alternative to the direct measurement of the distortion rate at several vibration levels and frequencies, we characterise weak non-linearities by a signal-model approach based on cascade of Hammerstein models. In this approach, in a chain of two non-linear systems, two measurements are sufficient to estimate the non-linear contribution of the second (sub-)system which cannot be directly linearly driven, as a function of the exciting frequency. The experiment consists in exciting the instrument acoustically. The linear and non-linear contributions to the response of (a) the loudspeaker coupled to the room, (b) the instrument can be separated. Some methodological issues will be discussed. Findings pertaining to several instruments - one piano, two guitars, one violin - will be presented.

Vibroacoustics of the piano soundboard: Reduced models, mobility synthesis, and acoustical radiation regime

Abstract:In string musical instruments, the sound is radiated by the soundboard, subject to the strings excitation. This vibration of this rather complex structure is described here with models which need only a small number of parameters. Predictions of the models are compared with results of experiments that have been presented in Ege et al. [Vibroacoustics of the piano soundboard: (Non)linearity and modal properties in the low- and mid- frequency ranges, Journal of Sound and Vibration 332 (5) (2013) 1288-1305]. The apparent modal density of the soundboard of an upright piano in playing condition, as seen from various points of the structure, exhibits two well-separated regimes, below and above a frequency flim that is determined by the wood characteristics and by the distance between ribs. Above flim, most modes appear to be localised, presumably due to the irregularity of the spacing and height of the ribs. The low-frequency regime is predicted by a model which consists of coupled sub-structures: the two ribbed areas split by the main bridge and, in most cases, one or two so-called cut-off corners. In order to assess the dynamical properties of each of the subplates (considered here as homogeneous plates), we propose a derivation of the (low-frequency) modal density of an orthotropic homogeneous plate which accounts for the boundary conditions on an arbitrary geometry. Above flim, the soundboard, as seen from a given excitation point, is modelled as a set of three structural wave-guides, namely the three inter-rib spacings surrounding the excitation point. Based on these low- and high-frequency models, computations of the point-mobility and of the apparent modal densities seen at several excitation points match published measurements. The dispersion curve of the wave-guide model displays an acoustical radiation scheme which differs significantly from that of a thin homogeneous plate. It appears that piano dimensioning is such that the subsonic regime of acoustical radiation extends over a much wider frequency range than it would be for a homogeneous plate with the same low-frequency vibration. One problem in piano manufacturing is examined in relationship with the possible radiation schemes induced by the models.
