Abstract:Piano tones vary according to how pianist touches the keys. Many possible factors contribute to the relations between piano touch and tone. Focusing on the stiffness of string, we establish a model for vibration of a real piano string and derive a semi-analytical solution to the vibration equation.

Abstract:This paper aims to develop a comprehensive physical model and numerical simulation schemes for a grand piano. The model encompasses various subsystems, including hammer felt, hammer shank, string, soundboard, air and room barriers, each modeled in three dimensions to approach their realistic dynamics. A general framework for 3D elastic solids accounting for prestress and prestrain is introduced, particularly addressing the the nonlinearities arising from the large deformation of piano strings and the one-sided nature of hammer felt-string contact. The study also examines coupling between subsystem through mechanisms of surface force transmission and displacement/velocity continuity. To facilitate numerical simulations, strong PDEs are translated into weak ODEs via a flexible space discretization approach. Modal transformation of system ODEs is then employed to decouple and reduce DOFs, and an explicit time discretization scheme is customized for generating digital audio in the time domain. The study concludes with a discussion of the piano models capabilities, limitations, and potential future enhancements.

Influence of torsion stiffness of spatial truss string system on structural stability

Abstract:Based on a practical engineering, four structural models which have different numbers of subsidiary trusses are captured. Failure models of the structures, under different vector high, truss height, prestressed, cable-vertical distance and sectional area, are analyzed, which indicates that the spatial truss must suffer torsional deformation while the structure is losing stability. Relationship between torsion stiffness and stability of the spatial truss string structure is researched by both theoretical method and finite element method, the result is that stability capacity of the structure can be advanced through the enhancement of its torsion stiffness. If there is only lateral brace in structure, the torsion stiffness largely depends on the bending stiffness of the lateral brace, which must be connected with the chord members rigidly, otherwise the structure may lose the resistance to torque for that it may become a transient system under torsional loading. Disposal of additional diagonal brace between the chord members is an effective method to solve the problem, research results show that the diagonal brace can greatly enhance torsion stiffness and stability capacity of the structure.

Abstract:After discussing the relationship between taper and camber typically used by bowmakers, energy methods are then employed to develop nonlinear boundary value problems describing both the hair tightening problem and static deflection analysis of the violin bow under playing loads, including an analysis of possible hair tension asymmetry by employing a linear springs in series model of the hair. A simple algebraic condition for the distance the frog travels in reaching maximum tension is also presented. Boundary value problems are then applied using tools in scilab, comparing the idealized Tourte taper exhibiting a linear stiffness profile and an alternative design with a significantly different profile, revealing small differences in their behavior under static playing loads and validating previously observed significant increase in hair tension when approaching the tip. While the difference in vertical hair deflection as a function of bow position is extremely small, the Tourte design exhibits somewhat more compliance in the stick when approaching the tip, possibly desirable by players given increasing hair tension. An interesting small loss of hair tension in the lower section of the bow stroke is also discussed, representing additional slight differences in the initial compliance felt by the player when engaging the strings.

Abstract:Force method equations adapt for an arch string structure with elastic support boundary are obtained by Castigliano theorem.Computing expressions for the internal force under a symmetrical distributed load and the pre-stressing force of the arch string structure are achieved through a symbol solution.These expressions reflect the relationship between the mechanical behavior of the arch string structure and structural parameters,such as vector high,cable-vertical distance,member stiffness and support stiffness.The expressions indicate that various structural parameters are not isolated,but they influence the structural mechanical properties by the ratio of each other.A practical arch string structure is analyzed by the theoretical method and finite element method,the accuracy of the theoretical method proposed is proved.

Abstract:The instruments of Antonio Stradivari (1644–1737) are still considered the finest in the world and have set the standard for violin quality that has yet to be exceeded by a modern luthier. To determine the relationship between the sound of the instrument and its structure and material properties a vibro-acoustic finite element model was developed for the 1715 Titian Stradivari violin. The structural model was created by measuring the structural geometry and density from CT scans of the actual instrument. The predicted structural modes were correlated with experimental modal data on the 1715 violin and updated accordingly. The correlated structural modes were then projected onto the acoustic envelope. The vibro-acoustic transfer function between force input at the violin bridge and acoustic pressure response 1.2 m away was predicted. These results were compared to experimental radiativity measurements made on the actual instrument. It was shown that including structural and acoustic damping characteristics are important to accurately predict the vibro-acoustic behavior of the Titian Stradivari violin. Predicted structural modal frequencies were all within 5 % of the experimental data, while the main acoustic mode was within 7 %. The predicted radiativity magnitude was within 1.5 dB for all mode peaks. This is the first comprehensive analytical vibro-acoustic model of a Stradivari instrument and can be used to determine how structural modifications effect violin sound quality.

Abstract:One problem of the investigation of musical instruments concerns the statement of physical characteristics of the tone quality. By musical experts' collaboration, old Italian violins and modern ones have been classified according to their tonal quality and physically examined by obtaining their response curves. The best old Italian master violins show physical particularities of tone quality which modern violins do not generally have. They affect the sound-color, transient phenomena, and “carrying power”—very important properties. Within a comparatively small range, conditioned by different musical taste, we can state an optimum response curve of violins. Curves of good and bad violas and violincellos have been taken, but are not sufficient for stating optimum curves. Furthermore, we must try to find fit measures of violin making, by means of which the optimal physical characteristics of tone quality can be attained. Methods must be found for building these optimum qualities into new violins. Such factors as shape, thickness of material, and varnish, seem quite important, while the bass bar, sound post, bridge, and strings are of less importance. Comparisons are given between a violin made on the basis of these researches and a Stradivarius instrument.

Abstract:Causes for the decrease in rate of piano tone decay with time of tone duration were investigated, including the following: different rates for different vibration modes or groups of modes, nonlinear transformation of mechanical energy to acoustical energy, storage of mechanical energy for subsequent acoustical radiation, transfer of energy between string modes perpendicular and parallel to the bridge, interference among strings that are almost exactly in tune, and change in rate of energy transfer from the multiple-string source to the bridge during the transition from an initial in-phase condition to a later out-of-phase condition. The last two closely related factors were found to control the rate change in most cases.

Modal Analysis of Upright Piano Soundboards by Combining Finite Element Analysis and Computer-Aided Design

Abstract:This study presents a visual model for analyzing the vibration modes of piano soundboards by combining the tools of finite element analysis and computer-aided design. Based on the predicted results from the model, changes of natural frequency and maximum displacement of the soundboard as a function of wood properties, structure, and rib size were discussed. Wood grain direction affected the mode shape of the soundboard. Among the 10 property factors investigated, density presented the greatest impact to the vibration mode of the soundboard followed by Young's modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson's ratio. Increasing the thickness of the resonance board and the use of ribs had positive impacts on the natural frequency of the soundboard. However, the amount of natural frequency was decreased for those that were lower than 100 Hz. Natural frequency increased as the intensity, density, and size of ribs increased. Rib height had a greater effect on the variation of natural frequency than the intensity, density, and rib width. In general, increases in rib intensity, density of wood species, and rib width presented negative effects on the maximum displacement.

Abstract:The influences of the physical meaning and model parameters of the Rayleigh damping model on the dynamic response were analyzed.The mass-related and stiffness-related items of Rayleigh damping model were derived based on the virtual work equation.The vibration response of one-dimensional viscoelastic rod with different Rayleigh damping coefficient was analyzed comparatively via analytical and numerical methods.The energy dissipation phenomenon caused by external environments can be reflected by mass-related section, while material''s blocking effects on dynamic response can be reflected by stiffness-related item.The blocking effects mentioned above indicate that strain rate should be included in stress calculation except the strain item.Analytical and numerical methods were employed to analyze the vibration response of one-dimensional viscoelasticity.The comparison results show that numerical solutions differ with analytical ones in stress calculation, and the former without considering the contribution of strain rate to stress calculation can''t meet the force boundary condition.The errors of stress calculated by the finite element method increase with the rise of Rayleigh damping coefficient and the exciting frequency.

Abstract:It has been shown that it is characteristic of piano tones to have partials that are slightly higher in frequency than harmonics would be. The departure from a harmonic relationship is termed inharmonicity of the partials. It has been shown also that the inharmonic relationships of the partials influence the tuning of the octaves of the piano. The result is a departure from the equally tempered scale with the treble strings tuned sharp and the bass strings tuned flat. The octaves are thus stretched from the true-octave relationship. This paper discusses the influence of the string-to-string patterns of inharmonicity upon piano tuning within the octave. It is the goal of the piano tuner to tune each string so as to produce smoothly increasing progressions of beat rates between two tones in a given musical interval as the tones move up the scale. This goal can be achieved in practice if the partial-inharmonicity pattern is essentially the same for each string or if there is a smooth change in the pattern from one string group to the next. The departure from “ideal,” especially in spinets, is discussed and demonstrated.

Measurement and Analysis of the Vibration Responses of Piano Soundboards with Different Structures

Abstract:The effect of structure on the vibration response was explored for four piano soundboards with different but commonly adopted structures. The vibration response was obtained using the free-vibration method, and the values of the dynamic modulus of elasticity and dynamic shear modulus obtained using the free-vibration frequency method (EF and GF) were compared with the dynamic modulus of elasticity obtained using the Euler beam method (EE) and dynamic shear modulus obtained using the free-plate torsional vibration method (GT), respectively. It was found that the soundboards with different structures had different vibration modes and that excitation at different locations highlighted different vibration modes. For all the soundboards analyzed, the EE and GT were higher than EF and GF by 2.2% and 24.3%, respectively. However, the trends of the results of these methods were the same. The four piano soundboards with different structures possessed varying dynamic moduli of elasticity and dynamic shear moduli. These rules are consistent with the grain directions of the soundboards and the anisotropy of the wood (the direction of the units of the soundboards). The results show that the vibration mode of the piano soundboard is complex. The dynamic elastic modulus of the soundboard can be calculated using the Euler beam method. The results provide a reference for studies on the vibration response, material selection, production technology, and testing of piano soundboards.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to clarify the relationship between the vibration of violins made by Antonio Stradivari and the acoustic radiation around it. The highly precise geometry of the violin was determined with a micro-computed tomography scanner, and the material properties of the violin body (spruce and maple) were set as the orthotropic properties in the numerical simulation. Then, the numerical simulations coupling the vibrations by a forced oscillation on a bridge with the acoustic field pressure around the violin were performed. Furthermore, the sound pressure emanating in a huge rectangular box was successfully calculated by large scale computing and the open-source parallel acoustic analysis software.

Abstract:String instruments, like the violin, have been studied for the past 350 years. These studies have focused on the quality of the wood, dynamic characteristics of these instruments and structural acoustics and psychoacoustics. The emphasis of the previous research was to understand the secrets of great designers of these instruments. For example, one would like to explain reasons for the legendary quality of the sound radiated by a Stradivarius and the price that it commands today. Many researchers have also suggested passive techniques to improve the quality of these musical instruments. However, no attempts have been made to use active structural control and smart structures to modify the quality of the music radiated by these instruments like the violin. In this paper, we start with the assumption that the legendary quality of the sound radiated by a Stradivarius is due to its special structural dynamic or structural-acoustics characteristics. Our approach is to use the concepts of adaptive or smart structures and active structural control to improve the quality of the sound radiated by these musical instruments. Procedures are developed to change the structural dynamic characteristics, actively, to replicate the structural dynamic characteristics of musical instruments developed by great masters.

Exploring design variations of the Titian Stradivari violin using a finite element model.

Abstract:Because violins are traditionally hand-crafted using wood, each one is unique. This makes the design of repeatable experiments studying some aspects of its dynamic behavior unfeasible. To tackle this problem, an adjustable finite element (FE) model of a violin soundbox using the geometry and behavior of the "Titian" Stradivari was developed in this paper. The model is parametric, so its design and material properties can be varied for before/after comparisons in both the frequency and time domains. Systematic simulations revealed that f-holes set lower in the top, as seen in some Stradivari violins (e.g., Hellier, Cremonese), raise the frequency of the Hill (a feature in the bridge mobility); conversely, the higher set f-holes seen in some Guarneri violins (e.g., Principe Doria) reduces such frequency. This agrees with the widespread belief that the high-frequency response of Stradivari violins is stronger than Guarneri violins. Changes in the response of the system were quantified once each part of the design was added, calling attention to the influence of the blocks on the behavior of signature modes, especially in the frequency and shape of B1 +. A text file of the FE model is available in supplemental materials; it runs in ANSYS (free version), for which guides are included.

Estimations of non-linearities in structural vibrations of string musical instruments

Abstract:Under the excitation of strings, the wooden structure of string instruments is generally assumed to undergo linear vibrations. As an alternative to the direct measurement of the distortion rate at several vibration levels and frequencies, we characterise weak non-linearities by a signal-model approach based on cascade of Hammerstein models. In this approach, in a chain of two non-linear systems, two measurements are sufficient to estimate the non-linear contribution of the second (sub-)system which cannot be directly linearly driven, as a function of the exciting frequency. The experiment consists in exciting the instrument acoustically. The linear and non-linear contributions to the response of (a) the loudspeaker coupled to the room, (b) the instrument can be separated. Some methodological issues will be discussed. Findings pertaining to several instruments - one piano, two guitars, one violin - will be presented.

Abstract:A soundboard, as an important resonance component of a piano has been continuously studied in the past several decades. It is known that the variation of mass distribution on a soundboard could affect its vibration properties and the sound quality of a piano. However, those effects have been seldom investigated until now. In this paper, an experiment is carried out to study the effects of additional mass-blocks on a soundboard. Small pieces of metal blocks are pasted on several different locations on a soundboard, and a laser vibrometer is used to extract its mode shapes and spectrum under the excitation of an acoustic source with frequency ranges from 10 Hz to 1 kHz. The results show a notable difference of spectrum between mass-added cases and original in low frequencies, but little difference in high frequencies. It could be concluded that additional mass-block could greatly affect the energy of the low-mode of a soundboard.

Abstract:The different mechanical properties of the materials from which the tailpieces are made have a noticeable effect on the acoustic performance of the violin. These elements are made today from ebony, rosewood, boxwood, aluminium, or plastic. The aim of this study was to check the exact impact of tailpieces made of different materials on the frequency response function (FRF) of a violin’s bridge and the timbre of the instrument’s sound. For this purpose, the bridge FRF measurement was carried out, and a psychoacoustic test was conducted. The material from which the tailpiece is made to the greatest extent affects the modal frequencies in the range 530–610 Hz (mode B1+), which mainly manifested itself in a change in the instrument’s timbre in terms of the brightness factor. The study showed that the lighter the tailpiece, the darker the sound of the violin. It was also revealed that the selection of accessories affects factors such as openness, thickness, and overall quality of the sound.

Design of a fretboard using the stiff string equation

Abstract:Guitar fretboards are designed based on the equation of the ideal string. That is, it neglects several factors as nonlinearities and bending stiffness of the strings. Due to this fact, intonation of guitars along the whole neck is not perfect, and guitars have right tuning just in an \emph{average} sense. There are commercially available fretboards that differ from the traditional design. (One example is the \cite{patent} by the Company True Temperament AB, where each fretboard is made using CNC processes.) As a final application of this work we would like to redesign the fretboard layout considering the effects of bending stiffness. The main goal of this project is to analyze the differences between the differences in the solution for vibrations of the ideal string and a stiff string. These differences should lead to changes in the fret distribution for a guitar, and, hopefully improve the overall intonation of the instrument. We will start analyzing the ideal string equation and after a good understanding of this analytical solution we will proceed with the, more complex, stiff equation. Topics like separation of variables, Fourier transforms, and Perturbation analysis might prove useful during the course of this project

Abstract:Music is the art of both sound and hearing. Among many musical instruments, the piano has the title of "king of instruments". Unlike the violin, which is delicate and soft, the piano's tone is noble and graceful. The pianist Nergoz once said that the purpose of all piano playing is to make sound and to create sound. So, how to use the piano to create a beautiful sound? This is an essential concern for all piano players. Therefore, it is important to practice tone, both in practice and in playing music, and only when the fingers touch the keys can a beautiful tone be produced. Tone is important in the whole process of piano playing. Both the expressiveness of the piano and its appeal to the listener are closely related to the quality of the tone. The part of the key that is touched, the intensity and the technique all have an important influence on the tone. The scientific approach to finger touch is a particularly important skill and technical criterion, both in the process of learning the piano and when performing it.
