Abstract:This paper adopted two stone chip powders(grinding respectively for 40 min and 60 min),commercial limestone powder and machinemade sand powder as the research object to focus on the study of the mechanical property of cement-based mortars when different kinds of limestone powders mixed single or together with other mineral admixtures such as fly ash and slag powder.Experimental results showed mortars had the best mechanical property when the three mixed together.The activation effect between limestone powder and the mineral admixtures powder was mutual.

Abstract:The effect of different waterproof agents on performance of inorganic lightweight aggregate thermal insulating mortar was investigated. The results showed that waterproof agent can reduce the bulk water absorption amount and improve the physical and mechanical properties of thermal insulating mortar,but it will reduce the thermal insulation performance of the mortar. The effect of various waterproof agents on the workability of thermal insulating mortars is obviously different. Silicone modified waterproof agent has little effect on the workability and with the increase of its content the bulk water absorption amount of the mortar decreases.

Abstract:In this study, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) confined smart concrete/mortar sensors were invented and validated for significantly improved measurement range. Several trial mixes were made using cement mortar and micron-phase graphite powders at different mix proportions. Compressive loading tests were conducted on smart mortar cylinder specimens with or without FRP confinement. Two-probe method was used to detect the electrical resistance of the smart cement mortar specimens. Strong correlation was recognized between the stress and electric resistance of the smart mortar. The test results indicated that the FRP wrapping could significantly enlarge the range of such self-sensing property as a consequence of confinement.

Abstract:To address the diminished shrinkage reduction capacity due to high ion sensitivity of superabsorbent polymers (SAP) within cement-based materials, this study employs solution polymerization where acrylic acid and acrylamide are copolymerized with nano-silica at varying concentrations to synthesize innovative SAPs. The investigation encompasses the structural groups, microscopic morphology, liquid absorption characteristics of these SAPs, and their effect on mortar's autogenous shrinkage. The results indicate that nano-silica can be encapsulated within polyacrylate-acrylamide network via physical adsorption and chemical grafting. The incorporation of nano-silica enhances the water absorption and retention capacities of SAPs in alkaline environments. Nano-silica composite SAPs absorb sufficient internal curing water and prolong the subsequent moisture gradient-driven water release process, continuously releasing water within matrix to maintain internal humidity, thereby further enhancing the shrinkage reduction effect on mortar. Based on Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) observations of SAPs morphologies within mortar and X-ray Computed Tomography (X-CT) monitoring of internal curing water distribution, it is revealed that nano-silica undergoes pozzolanic reactions, forming a tightly connected domain with matrix. This facilitates continuous water release to the surrounding through capillary action, thus maintaining capillary pore liquid levels. Consequently, it effectively mitigating shrinkage stress and deformation, leading to an enhancement in shrinkage reduction effects.

Abstract:An electro-osmotic treatment of silane for enhancing carbonated mortar durability was proposed. During the electro-osmotic treatment, silane was injected into carbonated mortar pores by applying an electric field, leading to deeper penetration depth. The enhancements of carbonated mortar durability after electro-osmotic treatment of silane were evaluated by examining water absorption, carbonation depth, sulfate resistance and chloride diffusion. The microscopic observations mechanism of electro-injected silane treatment was determined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that the resistances to water absorption, sulfate and chloride diffusion were improved by use of electro-osmotic treatment of silane. The electro-osmotic treatment of silane has a limited impact on carbonation resistance. An impervious film with a dense structure is formed in carbonated mortar through the electro-osmotic treatment of silane, and this treatment does not introduce new crystal phases to the hydration products within the carbonated mortar.

Effect of Lithium Silicate Composite Sol on the Properties of Concrete Surface

Abstract:Different ratios of lithium silicate based composite sol were prepared and sprayed on mortar surface with different curing ages. Resilience value and water permeability were studied after permeated sols consolidated. The micro morphology of the surface was observed before and after coating. The results show that the composite sol is filled in the micro pores on the mortar surface to form dense microstructures; as a result, improved the surface resilience value is improved and surface permeability is reduced. Resilience value of 28 d mortar surface is higher than that of 3 d curing mortar after sol consolidated for 56 d. With the increase of the content of sodium silicate of the composite sol, the resilience value first increases and then decreases; meanwhile, water permeability would be raised. Preferable content of sodium silicate in the lithium silicate based composite sol is 15wt% and 25wt%.

Abstract:The experiments and model calculating are used to study the protection effect of cementitious materials with silane treatment.The distinction of chloride diffusivity before and after silane sokage has been studied using NEL method.According to the experiments,a model is chosen to calculate the resistance of cementitious materials to chloride ingress.The results show that the chloride diffusivity of surface modified layer is significantly reduced.The degree of chloride diffusivity reduction and modified layer's thickness has a major impact on protection impact.
Research on the influence of property of composite cement mortar to silane coupling agents

Abstract:The influence of silane coupling agent on the density, delamination degree, flexural strength and compressive strength of various kinds of composite cement mortar was studied. The results showed that the flexural and compressive strength of cement mortar and styrene-acrylic latex modified cement motar were improved by adding silane coupling agent; When 0.5 % solution of silane coupling agent used, the flexural strength and compressive strength of the cement mortar was improved by 10 percent than those of the blank ones, the maximum of all four samples; and when 1% solution of silane coupling agent used, the flexural strength and compressive strength of styrene-acrylic latex modified cement mortar was improved by 20 percent than those of the blank ones; meanwhile, the density of cement mortar and styrene-acrylic latex modified motar could be improved with the addition of silane coupling agent but its delamination degree was improved slightly. The steel fiber modified with silane coupling agent could improve the flexural strength and compressive strength of steel fiber reinforced cement mortar and steel fiber reinforced polymer cement mortar; as 1% solution of silane coupling agent was used, the flexural strength and compressive strength of steel fiber reinforced cement mortar was improved by 12 percent than the blank ones, which reached the maximum of all.

Abstract:In order to prolong the service life of cement-based materials subjected to external chloride ion attacks, two kinds of methods, a surface treatment and chloride immobilization, were combined by fabricating a nanosilica-modified cement paste and coating it on mortar samples as a surface treatment material (HSM). The protective effect of the HSM was evaluated according to its surface hardness, and an RCM test was carried out, which indicated that the attached layer could both increase the surface hardness and decrease the chloride diffusion coefficient. Then, the chloride immobilization mechanisms were illustrated in terms of chloride blocking resistance, chemical binding and physical binding X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric/derivative thermogravimetric (TG/DTG) and thermodynamic modeling. The results showed that the hybrid nanomaterials that modified the cementitious surface treatment materials may effectively improve the chloride-resistant property of a matrix with content of no more than 1%. This research outcome could provide evidence that hybrid nanosilica can be applied in surface treatment technology.

Abstract:Effect of isobutyl-triethoxy-silane penetrative protective agent on the carbonation resistance of the concrete was studied. The concrete specimens for the 28 d accelerated carbonation process were manufactured with w / c of 0.49 and 0.64, both in the presence and absence of silane and mineral admixture. The penetration of isobutyl-triethoxy-silane and the carbonation of concrete were investigated by penetration depth, carbonation depth, XRD, SEM, and pore size distribution. The results showed that concrete compactness played an important role in the silane penetration and carbonation resistance. Penetration depth of silane-treated concrete mainly depended on the compactness of the concrete, and could not remarkably change through the accelerated carbonation process. In the accelerated carbonation process, penetrative protective agent improved the carbonation resistance of the higher compactness concretes but accelerated the carbonization process of the lower compactness concretes. As penetrative protective agent penetrated along the external connectivity pores into concrete not filling the entire surface area, the inorganic film could not fully protect the Ca(OH) 2 phase from carbonation. After 28 d accelerated carbonation, fibrous hydration products disappeared and the surface holes decreased. Due to the formation of carbonized products, the porosity of the concrete surface decreased, especially in high-strength concrete.
Effect of Matrix Modification on Durability of Cementitious Composites in an Acid Rain Environment

Abstract:The durability of silane-modified mortar, a cementitious composite, in acid rain environment was investigated given its extensive usage as a structural material. The results indicated that the addition of silane decreased the compressive strength of the cementitious composite. Wetting angle was increased by incorporating silane into the matrix. Decrease in both water absorption ability and coefficient of capillary suction confirmed hydrophobicity as induced by silane addition. Results of mechanical testing, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that the sulfuric acid resistance of mortar was enhanced by silane. Based on these results, it is revealed that silane addition inhibits the diffusion of water, and consequently, sulfate ion diffusion rate decreases, thereby resulting in reduction in the rate of corrosion of cementitious composites by sulfuric acid.
Influence of prepared silicate on properties of traditional sticky rice-lime mortar

Abstract:The influence of prepared silicate on properties of traditional sticky rice-lime mortar and their scientific mechanism are discussed by means of SEM, XRD, and FTIR.Results indicate that silicate are effective to increase the hardness, compressive strength, freezing-thaw resistance and water resistance of sticky rice-lime mortar significantly.The sticky rice-lime mortar with prepared silicate, overall properties of the prepared silicate-sticky rice-lime mortar are very good.Compared with pure sticky rice-lime mortar, the 66 d compressive strength of prepared silicate-sticky rice-lime mortar is 1.45 MPa, and the freeze-thaw resistance and water resistance increase by 133.3% and 43.8% respectively.Formation of tobermorite is possible to account for the good mechanical property of sticky rice-lime mortar with silicate.

Abstract:<p>In the present study, silane coupling agents (SCAs) were used as admixture in cement paste. The influence on the cement hydration in different stages as well as the mechanical properties were well investigated. Results demonstrated that silanes play a role of retardant in cement paste at the very early age, the proposed mechanism laid in the attraction force between intermediate hydrolysis products of silanes and cement hydrated products. The intermediate hydrolysis products can form gel-like barrier covering the cement hydrated products and were further proved by the designed pre-hydrolysis effect using calorimeter and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). However, cement paste modified by silane would have denser structure compared to neat paste as a result of reaction between polycondensated silane and CH after 28 days of curing, leading lower porosity, higher hydration degree and better mechanical performance.</p>

Abstract:A new concept of polymer modification on cementitious materials was proposed. Cement mortars were modified using polyacrylate (PA) emulsion. Mixtures with polymer—cement ratios of 0, 5, and 10 wt.% were investigated in compressive strength and fracture properties at 0.5d, 0.75d, 1d, 3d, 7d and 28d. Compressive tests indicated a remarkable change of PA emulsion modified mortars from the early age to 28d. PA emulsion modification also gained considerable improvement in fracture properties. However, the test results revealed that the mechanical properties growth had not linear relationship with the PA emulsion addition. The mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) test proved that the optimization of PA emulsion addition should be emphasized in considering the pore introduction due to the emulsifier in PA emulsion. The principle of the PA emulsion modification was provided in a view of the microstructure of the mortars obtained from scanning electronic microscope (SEM) test and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis.

Abstract:Ice content is an essential factor that affects the internal pressure of cement-based materials during freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs). Since the electrical conductivity of mortar is closely related to its moisture content, it is possible to estimate the ice content based on electrical conductivity variation of mortar. As a result, the ice formation process during FTCs can be monitored. This paper proposed a model to estimate the ice content by applying electrical measurements and clarified the combined effects of temperature and moisture content for electrical conductivity of mortar. The ice content of mortar was estimated with the model by conducting the electrical test. The results are found in acceptable agreement with theoretical results from thermodynamic analysis, and the relationship between ice content and temperature is similar to existing calorimetric test results, which confirm the reliability of the model and the proposed test method.

Abstract:The influences of three types of silane (tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), N-2-aminoethyl-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AEAPTMS)) on flowability, strength development and hydration kinetics of cement pastes and mortars are systematically investigated. Results show that: 1) three silanes exhibit a dispersing effect on cement pastes indicated by the increased flowability of fresh cement pastes, among which AEAPTMS shows the strongest dispersing power; 2) AEAPTMS and APTES retard cement hydration by extending the induction period and reducing the hydration degree at certain ages determined by isothermal calorimetry, measurements of non-evaporable water amount and portlandite content in hydration products at ages before 90days; 3) AEAPTMS and APTES show positive effect on the toughness of mortars after 7day curing; and 4) three silanes act differently on strength growth at various ages, which should be a result that is counterbalanced by their influences on hydration kinetics, pore structure, composition and morphology of hydration products.
Influence of silicon-dioxide nanoparticles in cementitious mortars: verification using X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, physical, and mechanical tests

Abstract:In recent years, nanotechnology has been applied to building materials, such as cementitious composites (e.g., mortar and concrete), to improve their properties. The aim of this study was to analyze the thermal, physical, and mechanical properties of mortars with and without silicon-dioxide (SiO2) nanoparticles. Experiments such as thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), fresh density, incorporated-air content, bulk density, capillary absorption, capillarity coefficient, flexural tensile strength, and compressive strength on prismatic specimens were performed on mortars and analyzed for different levels of nanosilica (nS). These levels were 1% and 3%, in addition to the reference mortar (0% nS). The TG-DTA curves showed an elevated content of chemically combined water and a lower content of calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) in the 3% nS compositions, while the XRD curves presented a lower content of calcite and portlandite in the same mortar. These results indicate the fixation capacity of lime for the formation of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), which is the primary cause of resistance in cementitious mortars. In addition, it was found that the use of nanosilica contributed to a fresh density increase of approximately 15%, which caused a minimum air-incorporated content decrease of 37% and a minimum bulk density increase of 10%. Higher densities resulted in a minimum water absorption reduction of 36%, owing to fewer pores in the mortars. Therefore, the capillarity coefficient decreased by a minimum of 41%. These nanoparticles also improved the minimum flexural tensile and compressive strengths by 88% and 158%, respectively, when using a 3% nS composition. These results can enable the use of lightweight aggregates in cementitious composites, improving their physical and mechanical characteristics and allowing greater reuse of these materials, including construction waste.

Abstract:Influences of silane emulsion as hydrophobic agent on pore structure of hardened cement paste (hcp), compressive strength and water absorption behavior of concrete were studied through pore structure analysis, water contact angle test and water/isopropanol absorption measurement. Results indicate that silane slightly inhibits early cement hydration and slightly reduces the 28-d compressive strength of concretes. The incorporation of silane significantly decreases the water sorptivity of concretes ascribed to the hydrophobization of capillary walls in hcps, whereas isopropanol absorption is not visibly affected by the addition of silane. The absolute water sorptivity decreases along with increasing water absorption amount for each group of concrete, which is believed to originate from swelling of C-S-H gel upon water absorption. However, the relative water sorptivity of the silane-modified concretes to the plain concrete remains constant during water absorption. A predicting method for long-term water absorption behavior of the silane-modified concrete is proposed.
Experimental, Analytical and Numerical Studies of Interfacial Bonding Properties Between Silane-Coated Steel Fibres and Mortar

Abstract:A systematic investigation of the effects of silane coatings on steel fibre–mortar interfacial bond properties was conducted, combining pullout tests, analytical solutions, and meso-scale FE simulations. Nine silane coatings were tested, and their effects were evaluated by 30 single fibre pullout tests. They were found to increase the peak force and energy consumption up to 5.75 times and 2.48 times, respectively. Closed-form analytical solutions for pullout load, displacement, and interfacial stress distribution during the whole pullout process were derived based on a tri-linear bond-slip model, whose parameters were calibrated against the pullout tests. Finally, the calibrated bond-slip models were used to simulate the pullout tests and complex failure of multi-fibre specimens in mesoscale finite element models. Such an approach of combining pullout tests, analytical solutions, and mesoscale modelling provides a reliable way to investigate the effects of fibre–mortar interfacial properties on the mechanical behaviour of steel fibre reinforced concrete members in terms of structural strength, stiffness, ductility, and failure mechanisms.

Abstract:The composited cementitious materials usually have superior performance; for example, using limestone powder (LP) and fly ash (FA) as the admixtures of cement in concrete/mortar is a popular way of improving the properties of concrete/mortar structures. In this work, we performed experimental tests to study the hydration process and pore distribution in mortar containing different ratios of LP and FA. Based on the results of mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), a numerical mortar model with random pore is built. The model can reflect the synergistic hydration interaction and filling effect caused by the admixtures of LP and FA. After analyzing the hydration process, the coupled chemical–thermal–mechanical method was used to simulate the characteristics of mortar containing LP and FA. The coupling model can simulate the “hump-type” hydration acceleration stage of the mortar at early age, which is specifically caused by the LP, proved in the experimental test. Additionally, the special, “hump-type” stage is important to enhance the early strength of the mortar. At different levels of admixture content, the random pore model and coupled method can predict the evolution process of the mechanical properties well, at early age and for long-term strength. Both experimental and numerical results suggest that the mortar containing admixtures of the proper ratio of LP to FA have good mechanical properties, which can be applied to engineering structures.
