Abstract:Asymmetric expansion: A catalytic asymmetric ring-expansion reaction of the title compounds occurs in the presence of a Sc(OTf)(3) catalyst bearing an N,N'-dioxide-based ligand. Highly functionalized 2-quinolone derivatives containing a chiral C4-quaternary stereocenter were obtained in high yields and high levels of selectivity under mild reaction conditions (see scheme; Tf=trifluoromethanesulfonyl).

Abstract:A NaI-catalyzed reaction of 3,3-bis(alkoxycarbonyl)cyclopropenes in the presence of 1,1-bis(phenylsulfonyl)ethylene providing an efficient route to a series of polyfunctionalized vinyl cyclopropanes is described. The reaction is general for a range of different 3,3-bis(alkoxycarbonyl)cyclopropenes affording the products in moderate to high yields. A plausible rationale for this transformation is discussed.

Abstract:The first example of InCl3-catalyzed polycyclotrimerization of diynes to generate regioregular hyperbranched polymers was developed. The InCl3/2-iodophenol-catalyzed polycyclotrimerization of aromatic/aliphatic diynes in chlorobenzene readily furnished soluble 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene-cored hyperbranched polyarylenes with high weight-averaged molecular weights (up to 37 200) in high yields (up to 87.8%). Thanks to its low cost and moisture-tolerance, this catalytic system is promising to be widely applied in preparation of regioregular functional hyperbranched polymers with unique properties.

Abstract:Highly regioselective halohydroxylations of bicyclic vinylidenecyclopropanes that lead to four types of products 2, 3, 4, and 6 were developed. The halohydroxylation reaction occurs at room temperature to give rise to ring-keeping products vinylbicyclo[(n+2).1.0]alkanols 2 in 55-90% yields with excellent regio- and diastereoselectivity; the reaction of bicyclic vinylidenecyclopropanes with 2.0 equiv of N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) at 100 degrees C affords alkylidenebicyclo[(n+2).2.0]alkanones 3 in 48-75% yields by means of further proximal cleavage of the cyclopropane ring. The structures of both types of compounds 2 and 3 have been elucidated by X-ray crystal diffraction. An interesting sequential reaction that consists of a couple electrophilic addition and elimination reactions was developed when the reaction of bicyclic vinylidenecyclopropanes with N-halosuccinimide (NXS; 3.0 equiv) was performed under the specified conditions to furnish a variety of divinyl ketones 4 by means of proximal cleavage of the cyclopropane ring. In addition, vinylidenecyclopropanes that bore one aryl group at the cyclopropyl ring reacted with NBS or I-2 at room temperature, thereby producing the corresponding divinyl ketones 4 in moderate to good yields with excellent E selectivity. Unexpectedly, 2-vinylic cyclohex-2-enols 6 were generated through a very different distal C-C bond cleavage of the cyclopropane due to the significant ring-size effect. Possible mechanisms are proposed on the basis of the obtained intermediates.

Abstract:A phenyliodine(III) diacetate-promoted/1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol-controlled dearomative spirocyclization of phenolic ketones was reported, providing two libraries of structurally interesting scaffolds, spirocyclohexadienonic ketals and their acetoxylated counterparts, in moderate to excellent yields under mild conditions. Control experiments unravel that the reaction proceeds through a spirocyclohexadienone-oxocarbenium cation species. In addition, an in situ-generated hypervalent iodine(III)-catalyzed version, as well as the late-stage transformation of products via conjugate additions, was also realized.

Abstract:Ring-opening iodination or bromination of unstrained cycloalkanols with NaI or NaBr and PhI(OAc)2 under visible light irradiation is developed. In this protocol the concentration of I2 is modulated through the generation of triiodide (I3-), thus significantly avoiding undesired side reactions. The reaction is under mild conditions and has a wide substrate scope, thus providing a practically useful method for accessing ω-iodo or ω-bromoketones.

Abstract:Me OTf-catalyzed formal [4 + 2] annulation of styrene oxides with alkynes to afford polysubstituted naphthalenes has been realized, which undergoes sequential electrophilic cyclization/ring expansion. Abstract:A new type of Lewis acid catalytic [2+1+1] cycloaddition reactions of isocyanides with alkylidene malonates and 3‐alkylideneindolinones were reported herein. The method exhibited the easily accessible starting materials, broad substrate scope, easy to scale-up and high atom-economy. A series of functionalized cyclobutene skeletons were obtained in up to 90% yield under mild reaction conditions. In addition, the cyclobutenes can be subjected to diverse downstream transformations. Intriguingly, an unprecedented ring expansion of cyclobutene was performed to afford a range of polysubstituted maleimides. Mechanistic experiments revealed that acid and water play an important role in the ring expansion process. The theoretical calculation studies provided guidance on the in-depth insight into the mechanistic underpinnings of this skeletal ring expansion protocol.

Abstract:A novel silver(I)-catalyzed ring-contractive rearrangement of 5-substituted 6-diazo-2-cyclohexenones has been developed, providing a new and efficient access to 5-alkylidene-2-cyclopentenones. The AgOTf-catalyzed reaction proceeds through metal-carbenoid formation followed by endocyclic allyl [1,2] migration with excellent stereoselectivity and broad substrate scope.

Abstract:The palladium-catalyzed carbonylative ring-forming reactions of 2-iodothiophenol, and the corresponding substituted derivatives, with allenes and carbon monoxide are described. The reactions afford thiochroman-4-ones in good to excellent isolated yields with quite high regioselectivity. The catalytic heteroannulation may involve regioselective addition of the sulfur moiety of the reactants on the more positive end of the allene, arylpalladium formation, CO insertion, subsequent intramolecular cyclization, and then reductive elimination. The regioselectivity is probably governed by electronic effects.
