Abstract:Based on the embedded atom method (EAM) and molecular dynamics (MD) method, the deformation properties of Cu nanowires with different single defects under dynamic compression have been studied. The mechanical behaviors of the perfect nanowire are first studied. The critical stress is found decreasing with the increase of the nanowire's length, which is well agreed with the modified Euler theory. We then consider the effects to the buckling phenomenon that brought in by different defects. It is found that obvious decrease of the critical stress is induced due to different defects, and the largest decrease is found in the nanowire with the surface vertical defect. Surface defects are observed exerting larger influence than internal defects. The buckling duration is shortened due to different defects except the nanowire with surface horizon defect, which is also found to possess the largest deflection. Different deflections are also observed for different defected nanowires. It is found that due to surface defects, only deflection in one direction is happened, but for internal defects, more complex deflection circumstances are observed.

Abstract:We study the current-driven domain wall (DW) motion in cylindrical nanowires using micromagnetic simulations by implementing the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with nonlocal spin-transfer torque in a finite difference micromagnetic package. We find that in the presence of DW, Gaussian wave packets (spin waves) will be generated when the charge current is suddenly applied to the system. This effect is excluded when using the local spin-transfer torque. The existence of spin waves emission indicates that transverse domain walls can not move arbitrarily fast in cylindrical nanowires although they are free from the Walker limit. We establish an upper velocity limit for DW motion by analyzing the stability of Gaussian wave packets using the local spin-transfer torque. Micromagnetic simulations show that the stable region obtained by using nonlocal spin-transfer torque is smaller than that by using its local counterpart. This limitation is essential for multiple DWs since the instability of Gaussian wave packets will break the structure of multiple DWs.

Abstract:Impurity pinning has long been discussed to have a profound effect on the dynamics of an incommensurate charge density wave (CDW), which would otherwise slide through the lattice without resistance. Here, we visualize the impurity pinning evolution of the CDW in ZrTe_{3} using the variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. At low temperatures, we observe a quasi-1D incommensurate CDW modulation moderately correlated to the impurity positions, indicating a weak impurity pinning. As we raise the sample temperature, the CDW modulation gets progressively weakened and distorted, while the correlation with the impurities becomes stronger. Above the CDW transition temperature, short-range modulations persist with the phase almost all pinned by impurities. The evolution from weak to strong impurity pinning through the CDW transition can be understood as a result of losing phase rigidity.

Abstract:Phase field simulations are conducted to investigate the micro-structural signature and the macro-response of a ferroelectric single crystal with domain pinning and depinning phenomena by dislocation arrays. It is shown that due to the presence of the dislocation arrays, a domain with polarizations antiparallel to an applied field can survive under the small amplitude of applied field. The residual domain serves as a pre-existing nucleus during the following macroscopic switching via only domain wall motion. The pinned domain will be depinned when the external electric field amplitude exceeds a critical value, which highly depends on the dislocation spacing in the dislocation array. Due to the pinning and depinning effect, an asymmetric hysteresis loop of polarization versus electric field might appear when a bias field is applied.

Abstract:Nonlinear transport behavior is one of the signatures of the formation of electronic crystals such as charge density wave (CDW), as it provides evidence for their collective motion. Such experimental evidence has been widely reported in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) materials but is rarely studied in 2D systems. Only a few studies on the RTe3materials have been previsouly reported. Here we report for the first time the observation of CDW depinning and sliding in the layered 1T-TiSe2compound, based on the observation of (1) nonlinear voltage-current characteristics and (2) the electrical noise, which are associated with the CDW depinning and sliding process. Similar measurements are also conducted on quasi-1D system NbSe3. The depinning behavior of the CDWs with different dimensionalities in these two systems are compared. It is found that the threshold electric field (ET) increases linearly with decreasing temperature for the 2D case, consistent with previous results on RTe3, while it demonstrated an activated behavior in 1D, as expected within the weak-pinning Fukuyama-Lee-Rice framework. Such a distinction of the threshold behavior in CDW systems of different dimensions therefore indicates a possible strong pinning picture in higher-dimensional CDW systems in general.ETis found to be much higher in 1T-TiSe2, consistent with a strong pinning picture, and could account for the scarcity of the depinning study in these 2D systems. Our results thus pave the way for a unified understanding of the CDW collective motion in different dimensionalities.
How Substitutional Point Defects in Two-Dimensional WS2 Induce Charge Localization, Spin-Orbit Splitting, and Strain.

Abstract:Control of impurity concentrations in semiconducting materials is essential to device technology. Because of their intrinsic confinement, the properties of two-dimensional semiconductors such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are more sensitive to defects than traditional bulk materials. The technological adoption of TMDs is dependent on the mitigation of deleterious defects and guided incorporation of functional foreign atoms. The first step toward impurity control is the identification of defects and assessment of their electronic properties. Here, we present a comprehensive study of point defects in monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2) grown by chemical vapor deposition using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, CO-tip noncontact atomic force microscopy, Kelvin probe force spectroscopy, density functional theory, and tight-binding calculations. We observe four different substitutional defects: chromium (CrW) and molybdenum (MoW) at a tungsten site, oxygen at sulfur sites in both top and bottom layers (OS top/bottom), and two negatively charged defects (CD type I and CD type II). Their electronic fingerprints unambiguously corroborate the defect assignment and reveal the presence or absence of in-gap defect states. CrW forms three deep unoccupied defect states, two of which arise from spin-orbit splitting. The formation of such localized trap states for CrW differs from the MoW case and can be explained by their different d shell energetics and local strain, which we directly measured. Utilizing a tight-binding model the electronic spectra of the isolectronic substitutions OS and CrW are mimicked in the limit of a zero hopping term and infinite on-site energy at a S and W site, respectively. The abundant CDs are negatively charged, which leads to a significant band bending around the defect and a local increase of the contact potential difference. In addition, CD-rich domains larger than 100 nm are observed, causing a work function increase of 1.1 V. While most defects are electronically isolated, we also observed hybrid states formed between CrW dimers. The important role of charge localization, spin-orbit coupling, and strain for the formation of deep defect states observed at substitutional defects in WS2 as reported here will guide future efforts of targeted defect engineering and doping of TMDs.
Competing Charge-Density Wave Instabilities in the Kagome Metal ScV6Sn6

Abstract:Owing to its unique geometry, the kagome lattice hosts various many-body quantum states including frustrated magnetism, superconductivity, and charge-density waves (CDWs). In this work, using inelastic X-ray scattering, we discover a dynamic short-range root 3x root 3x root 2 CDW that is dominant in the kagome metal ScV6Sn6 above T-CDW approximate to 91 K, competing with the 3x3x3 CDW that orders below T-CDW. The competing CDW instabilities lead to an unusual CDW formation process, with the most pronounced phonon softening and the static CDW occurring at different wavevectors. First-principles calculations indicate that the root 3x root 3x root 2 CDW is energetically favored, while a wavevector-dependent electron-phonon coupling (EPC) promotes the root 3x root 3x root 3 CDW as the ground state, and leads to enhanced electron scattering above T-CDW. These findings underscore EPC-driven correlated many-body physics in ScV6Sn6 and motivate studies of emergent quantum phases in the strong EPC regime.

Abstract:We study the sliding state of a two-dimensional Wigner crystal in a strong magnetic field and a random impurity potential. Using a high-velocity perturbation theory, we compute the nonlinear conductivity, various correlation functions, and the interference effects arising in combined AC + DC electric effects, including the Shapiro anomaly and the linear response to an AC field. Disorder is found to induce mainly transverse distortions in the sliding state of the lattice. The Hall resistivity retains its classical value. We find that, within the large velocity perturbation theory, free carriers which affect the longitudinal phonon modes of the Wigner crystal do not change the form of the nonlinear conductivity. We compare the present sliding Wigner crystal in a strong magnetic field to the conventional sliding charge-density wave systems. Our result for the nonlinear conductivity agrees well with the $I-V$ characteristics measured in some experiments at low temperatures or large depinning fields, for the insulating phases near filling factor $\nu$ = 1/5. We summarize the available experimental data, and point out the differences among them.

Abstract:Dislocation substructure-sensitive crystal plasticity (DSS-CP) modeling accounts for the evolution of mesoscale structures using dislocation-based parameters informed by experiments and computation at various lower length scales. To a first-order approximation, DSS-CP model parameters are affected by hydrogen (H) concentration, accounting for both H-dependent yield strength and strain hardening rate. This H-affected DSS-CP model is two-way coupled with H-diffusion to explore both effects of plastic deformation on H-diffusion and effects of H on yield strength and strain hardening in the DSS-CP model. Crack tip simulations are performed for face-centered cubic (FCC) metals under monotonic loading conditions with and without H. Enhanced maximum plastic deformation in the vicinity of the crack tip (i.e., localization or intensification of plastic strain) and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) are predicted in the presence of H, consistent with experimental observations. In spite of increased initial strength due to H, subsequent reduction of the rate of strain hardening in the presence of H is shown to enhance localization of crack tip plasticity. Furthermore, this modeling framework predicts that higher H-diffusivity (leading to a larger H-affected zone) will enhance the crack tip plasticity, making use of the two-way coupling algorithm implemented in this work. On the other hand, we find that the H-sensitivity of crack tip strain localization response, based only on modification of model parameters, is too weak to explain typical experimental observations. This points to the need to develop more advanced DSS-CP constitutive relations that consider highly complex dislocation interactions with point defects.

Sliding Dynamics of the Wigner Crystal on Liquid He

Abstract:The Wigner crystal on liquid He accompanies with periodic corrugation of the He surface; dimples. The dynamics of the crystal is coupled with the motion and the deformation of the dimples. Nonlinear phenomena found in AC Corbino conductivity are attributed to the collective sliding of the electrons out of the dimples. In order to inspect the dynamical transition to the sliding state, we have developed a novel experimental method using a so-called "t^2 pulse", whose leading and trailing edges change in proportion to the square of time; V = at^2. Since the force exerting upon the crystal is proportional to the time derivative of the input voltage, dV/dt, the t^2-pulsed method is expected to realize a continuous sweep of the driving force, resulting in the real-time observation of the sliding transition. The observed response shows clearly the sliding, revealing that the external force to the crystal determines the sliding transition.

On field-driven domain wall motion in compensated ferrimagnetic nanowires

Abstract:The fascinating high-speed field-driven domain wall (DW) motion along ferrimagnetic nanowires near the angular momentum compensation point (AMCP) is solved based on the generic ferrimagnetic dynamics. The physics of the absences of precessional torque and infinite high Walker breakdown field at the AMCP is proved under general conditions. Based on the energy conservation principle, an almost exact DW velocity formula, valid beyond the Walker breakdown field, is obtained. Our results agree with all existing experiments and simulations. This theory provides useful guidances to DW manipulation.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the effects of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) on an electric-field-driven sliding motion of a one-dimensional charge density wave (CDW), which is initially pinned by impurities. By numerically analyzing an extended Fukuyama-Lee-Rice model, we show that a mechanical vibration of the SAW, which, in the model, is assumed to affect the CDW via the pinning site in the form of temporally oscillating pinning parameters, induces Shapiro steps with self-similarity, i.e., the devil's staircase, in the current-voltage characteristics. It is also found that when the SAW acts as the vibration in the pinning strength, the mechanism of the mode locking (harmonic and subharmonic responses) leading to the occurrence of the Shapiro steps is modified, and as a result, the fractal dimension and parameter dependence of the SAW-induced staircase can be considerably different from those for the conventional ac-electric-field-induced one. This suggests that an unconventional type of fractal phenomena can emerge in the SAW-induced CDW dynamics.

Abstract:The phase-field-crystal (PFC) method is used to investigate migration of grain boundary dislocation and dynamic of strain-driven nucleation and growth of deformed grain in two dimensions. The simulated results show that the deformed grain nucleates through forming a gap with higher strain energy between the two sub-grain boundaries (SGB) which is split from grain boundary (GB) under applied biaxial strain, and results in the formation of high-density ensembles of cooperative dislocation movement (CDM) that is capable of plastic flow localization (deformed band), which is related to the change of the crystal lattice orientation due to instability of the orientation. The deformed grain stores the strain energy through collective climbing of the dislocation, as well as changing the orientation of the original grain. The deformed grain growth (DGG) is such that the higher strain energy region extends to the lower strain energy region, and its area increase is proportional to the time square. The rule of the time square of the DGG can also be deduced by establishing the dynamic equation of the dislocation of the strain-driven SGB. The copper metal is taken as an example of the calculation, and the obtained result is a good agreement with that of the experiment.

Influence of nonlocal damping on the field-driven domain wall motion

Abstract:We derive the complete expression of nonlocal damping in noncollinear magnetization due to the nonuniform spin current pumped by precessional magnetization and incorporate it into a generalized Thiele equation to study its effects on the dynamics of the transverse and vortex domain walls (DWs) in ferromagnetic nanowires. We demonstrate that the transverse component of nonlocal damping slows down the field-driven DW propagation and increases the Walker breakdown field whereas it is neglected in many previous works in literature. The experimentally measured DW mobility variation with the damping tuned by doping with heavy rare-earth elements that had discrepancy from micromagnetic simulation are now well understood with the nonlocal damping. Our results suggest that the nonlocal damping should be properly included as a prerequisite for quantitative studies of current-induced torques in noncollinear magnetization.

Abstract:The charge density wave (CDW) instability often requires the participation of electron density of state at the Fermi level for the electronic energy gain in the structurally modulated phase, whether it is due to Fermi surface nesting (FSN) or the electron-phonon coupling mechanism. The physics of the CDW in the quasi-one-dimensional semimetal Ta2NiSe7 remains elusive for the lack of consistent Fermi surface response in the CDW state. Here, we investigate the electric-field effect in the CDW state in Ta2NiSe7 using ionic liquid gated field-effect transistors (iFETs) fabricated based on 10-20-nm-thick flakes. The strong electric field at the ionic liquid/flake interface and low carrier density in Ta2NiSe7 facilitate a finite electric-field response in the CDW state. The onset temperature of CDW shows a nearly negligible electric field dependence, whereas the resistivity shows a sizeable tunability: the resistivity increases at positive gating in the normal state but decreases in the CDW state instead. Our first-principles calculations revealed nested holelike Fermi surfaces with a nesting vector weakly coupled with electric-field gating and a nesting area increasing more significantly in a negative electric gating than in a positive electric gating. The calculated Fermi surfaces provide an adequate account for the intricate transport in Ta2NiSe7, which indicates the dominant role of FSN in the CDW mechanism under current debate in this system.
Intertwined effects of elastic deformation and damage on vortex pinning and Jc degradation in polycrystalline superconductors

Abstract:The damage and the critical current density (Jc) degradation of polycrystalline superconductors induced by strain dramatically influence their performance in applications. Unfortunately, the state-of-the-art experimental techniques are unable to detect the damage of internal polycrystalline structures and the microscopic superconductivity in the presence of strain. We propose a groundbreaking multi-scale theoretical framework aimed at revealing the underlying physical mechanisms of the reversible and irreversible Jc degradation induced by the strain through tackling the complex intertwined effects of elastic deformation and damage on the superconductivity of grain boundaries and the associated vortex pinning. The results are well validated by experimental measurements. Utilizing the benchmarked physical model, we demonstrate that the damage evolutions of polycrystalline superconductors in the presence of strain can be approximately estimated by means of the electromagnetic experiments on Jc. Furthermore, we also discuss the characteristics of damage and Jc degradation of polycrystalline superconductors subjected to biaxial mechanical loads. The findings will pave the way to investigate the tunable vortex pinning and Jc of superconductors by strain, and to develop a brand new electromagnetic method to manifest the damage of polycrystalline superconductors.

Electronic Topology with Bound Defect Charges Promotes Intermediate Hexatic Phase in Two-Dimensional Melting

Abstract:Disclinations play an amusing role in topological electronic states because of the ability to trap charges residing in the cores of these defects. According to the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young (KTHNY) theory of two-dimensional (2D) melting, unbinding the bound pairs of disclinations (i.e., dislocations) induces the structural transition from the hexatic to liquid phase, corresponding to the destruction of quasilong range order. In this work, we elucidate the interplay between topological electronic states and the KTHNY structural transition. We verify the existence of electronic topology -induced charges that are trapped at disclinations during the 2D melting of hard disk particles. Resorting to the Ewald technique, we calculate the real -space distribution of the electrostatic potential generated by nonuniform Coulomb gas composed of these trapped charges. We found that the nonzero gradient of the electrostatic potential gives rise to additional contributions to the hydrostatic pressure. Based on the linear elastic theory, we further show that the electronic topology -induced trapped charges add extra contributions to the core energy of dislocations, increase the energy barrier of dislocation unbinding, and eventually decrease the lower critical boundary of the hexatic phase in the phase diagram. Our finding not only gives a special perspective for studying amorphous topological insulators but proposes a new impacting mechanism in the deviation of the phase boundary of structural transitions.

Abstract:In this paper, the defect evolution caused by electromigration induced surface diffusion in interconnects is investigated using a newly-developed electro-thermo-mechanical coupling phase-field model. The Joule heat and its resulting thermomigration are included into the phase-field model. The governing equation of the phase-field is solved by semi-implicit spectral methods and the accompanied governing equations of applied physics fields are solved by finite volume methods. Comparative investigation into defect evolution with and without the influence of Joule heating is conducted. It is deduced that thermomigration facilitates local elongation of the defect in the "current crowding" region and exerts a substantial influence on the defect morphological evolution. Subsequently, the effect of the inclination angle of the electric field on the void morphology evolution and crack propagation is discussed. We find that the defect achieves the largest characteristic length when the electric field direction is perpendicular to the uniaxial tension direction, implying a higher threat to the circuit safety. This study may help to deepen people's understanding of how the thermal effect functions in electromigration process and sheds light on different modes of defect evolution in interconnects.
