Abstract:Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide an ideal platform for exploring the effects of dimensionality on correlated electronic phases such as charge density wave (CDW) order. When TMDs are reduced in thickness to the 2-D limit, it is expected that the substrates will exert a considerable influence on the electron states. Here, we report a study of the charge density wave state in 1T-TiSe2 nanosheets of different thicknesses when the sheets are encapsulated by hexagonal Boron Nitride or supported on the SiO2 substrate. Our results show that dimensionality reduction results in an enhancement of CDW order and that disorder and substrate phonons tend to destroy CDW order, preventing observation of intrinsic CDW transition in ultrathin samples. Encapsulated 10 nm thick 1T-TiSe2 samples exhibit intrinsic CDW with transition temperature as high as 235 K. Our study points out that choosing the right substrate is important in the search for room temperature CDW materials. Published by AIP Publishing.
Pressure Effect of the Charge Density Wave Transition on Raman Spectra and Transport Properties of 2H−nbse2

Abstract:Charge density wave (CDW) order is widely existing and fundamentally important in solid-state physics. However, several critical issues regarding the vibrational and electronic subsystems and their coupling still need to be better understood. Here, we tune the electrical transport and collective vibrational excitation, i.e., phonon and amplitude mode, by pressure in a prototype charge density wave material, 2H-NbSe2. A complete pressure-temperature phase diagram is revisited. The anomaly in Hall and magnetoresistivity at CDW critical temperature, TCDW, was suppressed by the pressure. In the Raman spectroscopy measurements, the appearance of CDW amplitude mode is accompanied by the freezing of the two-phonon mode. The frequency of CDW amplitude mode under pressure follows modified mean-field theory with power-law scaling (& beta; = 0.18). The renormalization of the Raman phonon across the CDW transition and the mean-field temperature dependence of CDW amplitude mode emphasized the importance of electron-phonon coupling in the formation of CDW state in 2H-NbSe2. Our work clarifies the complex vibrational and electronic subsystems and sheds light on the mechanism of the charge density state in 2H-NbSe2.
Intertwining of Multiphase Charge Density Waves in In-intercalated TaSe2

Abstract:Disorder caused by defects plays an important role on the emergence of exotic physical phenomena in quantum states of materials, including charge density waves (CDWs). Usually, the coexistence of multiphase CDWs aroused by defects is manifested in multiple domains resulting from phase separation. By using scanning tunneling microscopy, we reveal an intertwining of two CDW phases without explicit domain boundaries on a cleaved surface of layered intercalation compounds InxTaSe2 (x = 0.58), which undergoes commensurate CDW transitions twice by cooling. The two CDW phases, i.e., 2 x a root 3 and 2 x 2 phases at higher and lower temperature, respectively, have very similar atomic arrangements in the TaSe2 layers and thus are very sensitive to the random potentials induced by the intercalated In atoms. Moreover, the translational symmetry breaking of the 2 x root 3 phase results in the presence of another intertwined root 7 x root 7 phase. These findings provide insight into the microscopic effect of defects on multiphase CDWs and reveal a coexisting manner of CDW phases.
Modulating Charge Density Wave Order in a 1T-Tas2/black Phosphorus Heterostructure.

Abstract:Controllability of collective electron states has been a long-sought scientific and technological goal and promises development of new devices. Herein, we investigate the tuning of charge density wave (CDW) in 1T-TaS2 via a two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructure of 1T-TaS2/BP. Unusual gate-dependent conductance oscillations were observed in 1T-TaS2 nanoflake supported on BP in transport measurements. Scanning tunneling microscopy study shows that the nearly commensurate (NC) CDW phase survived to 4.5 K in this system, which is substantially lower than the NC to commensurate CDW phase transition temperature of 180 K. A Coulomb blockade model was invoked to explain the conductance oscillations, where the domain walls and domains in NC phase serve as series of quantum dot arrays and tunnelling barriers, respectively. Density functional theory calculations show that a range of interfacial interactions, including strain and charge transfer, influences the CDW stabilities. Our work sheds light on tuning CDW orders via 2D heterostructure stacking and provides new insights on the CDW phase transition and sliding mechanism.
Depinning of the Charge-Density Waves in Quasi-2D 1T-TaS2 Devices Operating at Room Temperature

Abstract:We report on depinning of nearly-commensurate charge-density waves in 1T-TaS2 thin-films at room temperature. A combination of the differential current-voltage measurements with the low-frequency noise spectroscopy provide unambiguous means for detecting the depinning threshold field in quasi-2D materials. The depinning process in 1T-TaS2 is not accompanied by an observable abrupt increase in electric current - in striking contrast to depinning in the conventional charge-density-wave materials with quasi-1D crystal structure. We explained it by the fact that the current density from the charge-density waves in the 1T-TaS2 devices is orders of magnitude smaller than the current density of the free carriers available in the discommensuration network surrounding the commensurate charge-density-wave islands. The depinning fields in 1T-TaS2 thin-film devices are several orders of magnitude larger than those in quasi-1D van der Waals materials. Obtained results are important for the proposed applications of the charge-density-wave devices in electronics.

Abstract:Charge density wave (CDW) is a startling quantum phenomenon, distorting a metallic lattice into an insulating state with a periodically modulated charge distribution. Astonishingly, such modulations appear in various patterns even within the same family of materials. Moreover, this phenomenon features a puzzling diversity in its dimensional evolution. Here, we propose a general framework, unifying distinct trends of CDW ordering in an isoelectronic group of materials, 2 H-MX 2 ( M = Nb, Ta and X = S, Se). We show that while NbSe 2 exhibits a strongly enhanced CDW order in two dimensions, TaSe 2 and TaS 2 behave oppositely, with CDW being absent in NbS 2 entirely. Such a disparity is demonstrated to arise from a competition of ionic charge transfer, electron-phonon coupling, and electron correlation. Despite its simplicity, our approach can, in principle, explain dimensional dependence of CDW in any material, thereby shedding new light on this intriguing quantum phenomenon and its underlying mechanisms.

Abstract:2H-NbSe2 is a prototypical charge-density-wave (CDW) system, exhibiting such a symmetry-breaking quantum ground state in its bulk and down to a single-atomic-layer limit. However, how this state depends on dimensionality and what governs the dimensionality effect remain controversial. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a robust 3 × 3 CDW phase in both freestanding and substrate-supported bilayer NbSe2, far above the bulk transition temperature. We exclude environmental effects and reveal a strong temperature and thickness dependence of Raman intensity from an axially vibrating A1g phonon mode, involving Se ions. Using first-principles calculations, we show that these result from a delicate but profound competition between the intra- and interlayer bonding formed between Se-pz orbitals. Our results suggest the crucial role of Se out-of-plane displacement in driving the CDW distortion, revealing the Se-dominated dimensionality effect and establishing a new perspective on the chemical bonding and mechanical stability in layered CDW materials.

Abstract:The charge density wave (CDW) instability often requires the participation of electron density of state at the Fermi level for the electronic energy gain in the structurally modulated phase, whether it is due to Fermi surface nesting (FSN) or the electron-phonon coupling mechanism. The physics of the CDW in the quasi-one-dimensional semimetal Ta2NiSe7 remains elusive for the lack of consistent Fermi surface response in the CDW state. Here, we investigate the electric-field effect in the CDW state in Ta2NiSe7 using ionic liquid gated field-effect transistors (iFETs) fabricated based on 10-20-nm-thick flakes. The strong electric field at the ionic liquid/flake interface and low carrier density in Ta2NiSe7 facilitate a finite electric-field response in the CDW state. The onset temperature of CDW shows a nearly negligible electric field dependence, whereas the resistivity shows a sizeable tunability: the resistivity increases at positive gating in the normal state but decreases in the CDW state instead. Our first-principles calculations revealed nested holelike Fermi surfaces with a nesting vector weakly coupled with electric-field gating and a nesting area increasing more significantly in a negative electric gating than in a positive electric gating. The calculated Fermi surfaces provide an adequate account for the intricate transport in Ta2NiSe7, which indicates the dominant role of FSN in the CDW mechanism under current debate in this system.
Discovery of a Topological Charge Density Wave

Abstract:Charge density waves (CDWs) appear in numerous condensed matter platforms, ranging from high-Tc superconductors to quantum Hall systems. Despite such ubiquity, there has been a lack of direct experimental study on boundary states that can uniquely stem from the charge order. Here, using scanning tunneling microscopy, we directly visualize the bulk and boundary phenomenology of CDW in a topological material, Ta2Se8I. Below the transition temperature (TCDW = 260 K), tunneling spectra on an atomically resolved lattice reveal a large insulating gap in the bulk and on the surface, exceeding 500 meV, surpassing predictions from standard weakly-coupled mean-field theory. Spectroscopic imaging confirms the presence of CDW, with LDOS maxima at the conduction band corresponding to the LDOS minima at the valence band, thus revealing a {\pi} phase difference in the respective CDW order. Concomitantly, at a monolayer step edge, we detect an in-gap boundary mode with modulations along the edge that match the CDW wavevector along the edge. Intriguingly, the phase of the edge state modulation shifts by {\pi} within the charge order gap, connecting the fully gapped bulk (and surface) conduction and valence bands via a smooth energy-phase relation. This bears similarity to the topological spectral flow of edge modes, where the boundary modes bridge the gapped bulk modes in energy and momentum magnitude but in Ta2Se8I, the connectivity distinctly occurs in energy and momentum phase. Notably, our temperature-dependent measurements indicate a vanishing of the insulating gap and the in-gap edge state above TCDW, suggesting their direct relation to CDW. The theoretical analysis also indicates that the observed boundary mode is topological and linked to CDW.

Abstract:Topological materials and topological phases have recently become a hot topic in condensed matter physics. In this work, we report an In-intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenide In,TaSe 2 (named 112 system), a topological nodal-line semimetal in the presence of both charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity. In the x = 0.58 sample, the 2 x root 3 commensurate CDW (CCDW) and the 2 x 2 CCDW are observed below 116 and 77 K, respectively. Consistent with theoretical calculations, the spin-orbital coupling gives rise to two twofold-degenerate nodal rings (Weyl rings) connected by drumhead surface states, confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results suggest that the 2 x 2 CCDW ordering gaps out one Weyl ring in accordance with the CDW band folding, while the other Weyl ring remains gapless with intact surface states. In addition, superconductivity emerges at 0.91 K, with the upper critical field deviating from the s-wave behavior at low temperature, implying possibly unconventional superconductivity. Therefore, we think this type of the 112 system may possess abundant physical states and offer a platform to investigate the interplay between CDW, nontrivial band topology and superconductivity. Unveiling Charge-Density Wave, Superconductivity, and Their Competitive Nature in Two-Dimensional NbSe2

Abstract:Recently, charge-density wave (CDW) and superconductivity are observed to coexist in atomically thin metallic NbSe2. Lacking of knowledge on the structural details of CDW, however, prevents us to explore its interplay with superconductivity. Using first-principles calculations, we identify the ground state 3 × 3 CDW atomic structure of monolayer NbSe2, which is characterized by the formation of triangular Nb clusters and shows a scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) image and Raman CDW modes in good agreement with experiments. We further demonstrate that from bulk to monolayer NbSe2, as the layer thickness decreases, the CDW order is gradually enhanced with rising energy gain and strengthened Fermi surface gapping, while superconductivity is weakened due to the increasingly reduced Fermi level density of states in the CDW state. These results well explain the observed opposite thickness dependencies of CDW and superconducting transition temperatures and uncover the nature of competitive interaction between the two collective orders in two-dimensional NbSe2.
Low-Temperature Collective Transport and Dynamics in Charge Density Wave Conductor Niobium Triselenide

Abstract:We investigated low-temperature dynamics in a charge density wave (CDW) conductor NbSe3, a widely studied representative of a class of systems of driven periodic media with quenched disorder and relevant to a wider group of systems exhibiting collective transport behaviors. To date, theoretical efforts have not converged to produce a consistent description of the rich dynamics observed in these systems, especially in the low temperature regime. We developed modern sample preparation techniques and used frequency- and time-domain transport measurements below the second characteristic Peierls CDW transition to investigate the regime of temporally-ordered collective creep in NbSe3 samples in the low temperature regime between 15 K and 32 K. By measuring the frequency of coherent oscillations between two characteristic threshold fields, ET and ET*, we show that in nine high-quality samples, pure, Ta-, or Ti-doped, the current-field relation for the collective transport in this regime closely follows a modified Anderson-Kim form across five orders of magnitude with thermally- and field-activated behavior above ET for a range of temperatures. This study, combined with our transport relaxation measurements, provides relevant length, energy, and time scales that set the dynamics in this regime and reveals that the collective dynamics, governed by large length and energy scales, must be reconciled with microscopic local dynamics, with barriers at orders of magnitude smaller scales. The interplay between the collective and local mechanisms set the dynamics that is responsible for extremely slow (creep-like) collective, yet temporally-ordered behavior. Combined with the existing work, our results paint a consistent picture of a transport phase diagram for CDWs, and density-wave systems in general, and provide essential ingredients for a much-needed correct theoretical description of these systems.
Unveiling the Charge Density Wave Inhomogeneity and Pseudogap State in 1T-Tise2

Abstract:By using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM)/spectroscopy (STS), we systematically characterize the electronic structure of lightly doped 1T-TiSe2, and demonstrate the existence of the electronic inhomogeneity and the pseudogap state. It is found that the intercalation induced lattice distortion impacts the local band structure and reduce the size of the charge density wave (CDW) gap with the persisted 2 × 2 spatial modulation. On the other hand, the delocalized doping electrons promote the formation of pseudogap. Domination by either of the two effects results in the separation of two characteristic regions in real space, exhibiting rather different electronic structures. Further doping electrons to the surface confirms that the pseudogap may be the precursor for the superconducting gap. This study suggests that the competition of local lattice distortion and the delocalized doping effect contribute to the complicated relationship between charge density wave and superconductivity for intercalated 1T-TiSe2.
Ising domain wall networks from intertwined charge density waves in single-layer TiSe2

Abstract:When the period of an incommensurate charge density wave (ICDW) approaches an integer multiple of a lattice vector, the energy gain obtained from locking the period to the lattice can lead to a fascinating transition into a commensurate state. This transition actually occurs through an intermediate near-commensurate (NC) phase, with locally commensurate regions separated by an ordered array of phase slips of a complex CDW order parameter. TiSe2 is a paradigmatic CDW system where incommensuration is believed to be induced by carrier doping, yet its putative NC state has never been imaged or its nature established. Here we report the observation of a striking NC state in ultraclean, slightly doped monolayers of TiSe2, displaying an intricate network of coherent, unidirectional CDW domain walls over hundreds of nanometers. Detailed analysis reveals these are not phase slips of a complex CDW, but rather sign-changing Ising-type domain walls of two coupled real CDWs of previously known symmetry, consistent with the period doubling nature of the parent commensurate state. In addition, we observe an unexpected nematic modulation at the original lattice Bragg peaks which couples to the CDW order parameters. A Ginzburg-Landau analysis naturally explains the couplings and relative modulations of all order parameters, unveiling TiSe2 as a rare example of an NC-CDW of two intertwined real modulations and emergent nematicity.

Abstract:Recently, modifications of charge density wave (CDW) in two-dimensional (2D) show intriguing properties in quasi2D materials such as layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). Optical, electrical transport measurements and scanning tunneling microscopy uncover the enormous difference on the many-body states when the thickness is reduced down to monolayer. However, the CDW in quasi-one-dimensional (1D) materials like transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTCs) is yet to be explored in low dimension whose mechanism is likely distinct from their quasi-2D counterparts. Here, we report a systematic study on the CDW properties of titanium trisulfide (TiS3). Two phase transition temperatures were observed to decrease from 53 K (103 K) to 46 K (85 K) for the bulk and < 15-nm thick nanoribbon, respectively, which arises from the increased fluctuation effect across the chain in the nanoribbon structure, thereby destroying the CDW coherence. It also suggests a strong anisotropy of CDW states in quasi-1D TMTCs which is different from that in TMDCs. Remarkably, by using back gate of 30 V similar to 70 V in 15-nm device, we can tune the second transition temperature from 110 K (at 30 V) to 93 K (at 70 V) owing to the altered electron concentration. Finally, the optical approach through the impinging of laser beams on the sample surface is exploited to manipulate the CDW transition, where the melting of the CDW states shows a strong dependence on the excitation energy. Our results demonstrate TiS3 as a promising quasi-1D CDW material and open up a new window for the study of collective phases in TMTCs.

Abstract:Metallic layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) host collective many‐body interactions, including the competing superconducting and charge density wave (CDW) states. Graphene is widely employed as a heteroepitaxial substrate for the growth of TMD layers and as an ohmic contact, where the graphene/TMD heterostructure is naturally formed. The presence of graphene can unpredictably influence the CDW order in 2D CDW conductors. This work reports the CDW transitions of 2H‐NbSe2 layers in graphene/NbSe2 heterostructures. The evolution of Raman spectra demonstrates that the CDW phase transition temperatures (TCDW) of NbSe2 are dramatically decreased when capped by graphene. The induced anomalous short‐range CDW state is confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy measurements. The findings propose a new criterion to determine the TCDW through monitoring the line shape of the A1g mode. Meanwhile, the 2D band is also discovered as an indicator to observe the CDW transitions. First‐principles calculations imply that interfacial electron doping suppresses the CDW states by impeding the lattice distortion of 2H‐NbSe2. The extraordinary random CDW lattice suggests deep insight into the formation mechanism of many collective electronic states and possesses great potential in modulating multifunctional devices.

Abstract:Edges of low-dimensional quantum systems have profound effects on both fundamental research and device functionality. Real-space investigation of the microscopic edge structures and understanding the edge-modulated electronic properties are of great essence. Here we report the nanoscale structural reconstruction at the atomically sharp edge of a charge-density-wave (CDW) correlated insulator 1T-NbSe<sub>2</sub> and the induced electronic properties. We find the CDW unit cells at the edge of single layer (SL) 1T-NbSe<sub>2</sub> evolve from the well-defined CDW order in bulk and spontaneously reconstruct into the quartet along the edge. Moreover, we capture an anomalous electronic superstructure along the edge, the periodicity of which is four times that of ordinary CDW lattice. Our findings provide a way to design the one-dimensional electronic superstructure in 2D quantum materials.

Conductance Fluctuations and Domain Depinning in Quasi-2D Charge-Density-Wave 1T-TaS$_2$ Thin Films

Abstract:We investigated the temperature dependence of the conductance fluctuations in thin films of the quasi-two-dimensional 1T-TaS$_2$ van der Waals material. The conductance fluctuations, determined from the derivative current-voltage characteristics of two-terminal 1T-TaS$_2$ devices, appear prominently at the electric fields that correspond to the transitions between various charge-density-wave macroscopic quantum condensate phases and at the onset of the depinning of the charge density wave domains. The depinning threshold field, $E_D$, monotonically increases with decreasing temperature within the nearly commensurate charge-density-wave phase. The $E_D$ value increases with the decreasing 1T-TaS$_2$ film thickness, revealing the surface pinning of the charge density waves. Our analysis suggests that depinning is absent in the commensurate phase. It is induced by the electric field but facilitated by local heating. The measured trends for $E_D$ of the domain depinning are important for understanding the physics of charge density waves in quasi-two-dimensional crystals and for developing electronic devices based on this type of quantum materials.

Abstract:The quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) TaSe3 attracts considerable attention for its intriguing superconductivity and possible interplay with nontrivial topology and charge density wave (CDW) state. However, unlike the isostructural analogues, CDW has not been observed for TaSe3 despite its quasi-1D character that is supposed to promote Peierls instabilities and CDW. Here we synthesize TaSe3 mesowires (MWs) using a one-step approach. For the MW of 300 nm thick, a distinct CDW transition occurs at 65 K in the resistivity measurement, which has not been reported before and is further evidenced by the Raman characterization and susceptibility measurement. For comparison, we have also prepared bulk single crystal TaSe3. Although no anomaly appears in the resistivity and magnetoresistance measurements, the carrier type detected by Hall effect varies from n-type to p-type below 50 K, suggesting a reconstruction of Fermi surface that could be associated with CDW. The enhancement of CDW in the MWs is attributed to the reduced dimensionality. TaSe3 is demonstrated to be a promising platform to study the correlation and competition of CDW and superconductivity in the quasi-1D systems.

Abstract:Taking advantage of the unique layered structure of TiSe2, the intrinsic electronic properties of two-dimensional materials can easily be tuned via heteroatomic engineering. Herein, we show that the charge density wave (CDW) phase in 1T-TiSe2 single-crystals can be gradually suppressed through Sn atoms intercalation. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and temperature-dependent resistivity measurements, this work reveals that Sn atoms can induce charge doping and modulate the intrinsic electronic properties in the host 1T-TiSe2. Notably, our temperature-dependent ARPES results highlight the role exciton-phonon interaction and the Jahn-Teller mechanism through the formation of backfolded bands and exhibition of a downward Se shift of 4p valence band in the formation of CDW in this material.
