Abstract:The ac response of a coupled double quantum dot system involving a phase-breaking effect is studied. We calculate the ac conductance based on the nonequilibrium Green's-function formalism. Some parasitic and gate capacitances are included in our model, thus the displacement current is considered, and the overall charge and current conservation are fulfilled. In our results the double resonant structure of the conductance is observed. We find that the electron-phonon interaction has a significant effect on the ac conductance both for low and high temperatures. Due to the phase-breaking effect of electron-phonon scattering, the resonant conductance peak is suppressed very seriously, and the second peak of the ac conductance may disappear completely. However, for the nonresonant situation, the conductance is enhanced for small frequencies. Furthermore, we study the effect of the capacitances on the ac conductance, and find that, for small frequencies, the capacitances have a small effect on the real part of the admittance. On the imaginary part of the admittance, all the capacitances except for the interdot capacitance have a considerable effect. For high frequencies all the capacitances have a considerable effect on the ac conductance.

Abstract:We use Gauge/Gravity duality to write down an effective low energy holographic theory of charge density waves. We consider a simple gravity model which breaks translations spontaneously in the dual field theory in a homogeneous manner, capturing the low energy dynamics of phonons coupled to conserved currents. We first focus on the leading two-derivative action, which leads to excited states with non-zero strain. We show that including subleading quartic derivative terms leads to dynamical instabilities of AdS$_2$ translation invariant states and to stable phases breaking translations spontaneously. We compute analytically the real part of the electric conductivity. The model allows to construct Lifshitz-like hyperscaling violating quantum critical ground states breaking translations spontaneously. At these critical points, the real part of the dc conductivity can be metallic or insulating.

Abstract:Electronic systems with quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) Fermi surface tend to form either a charge-density-wave (CDW) or a spin-density-wave ground state at low temperatures due to one-dimensional instabilities. Among various CDW states, surface CDWs are different from that within the bulk due to the reduced dimensionality. Here we report the systematic investigation of charge density modulation on the surface of in situ cleaved TaTe4 crystal by means of low temperature scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, corroborated with density functional theory calculation. Well-defined Q1D modulation (4a, 6c) accompanied with a periodic lattice distortion is clearly observed on the (010) cleaved surface, distinct from that of its bulk CDW (2a × 2a × 3c). Tunneling spectroscopic measurements reveal a partially-opened energy gap about 23 meV around Fermi level. Such gap shows similar spatial variation with the periodicity of surface modulation and diminishes subsequently as temperature rises, which indicates a novel surface-related CDW gap states. The surface modulation vectors fit well with the Fermi surface nesting vectors, derived from the calculated Fermi surfaces. Surprisingly, such surface modulation can be suppressed greatly by applying vertical magnetic field and a critical field about 9.05 T can be estimated from field-dependent data. Our results demonstrate that this unique CDW modulation is strongly related to Fermi surface nesting mediated electron–electron coupling due to the reduced dimensionality of the surface, and can be readily tuned by relatively small magnetic field.
Charge Dynamics In The Phase String Model For High-T-C Superconductors

Abstract:An understanding of the anomalous charge dynamics in the high-T-c cuprates is obtained based on a model study of doped Mott insulators. The high-temperature optical conductivity is found to generally have a two-component structure: a Drude-like part followed by a mid-infrared band. The scattering rate associated with the Drude part exhibits a linear-temperature dependence over a wide range of high temperature, while the Drude term gets progressively suppressed below a characteristic energy of magnetic origin as the system enters the pseudogap phase. The high-energy optical conductivity shows a resonancelike feature in an underdoped case and continuously evolves into a 1/omega tail at higher doping, indicating that they share the same physical origin. In particular, such a high-energy component is closely correlated with the omega-peak structure of the density-density correlation function at different momenta, in systematic consistency with exact diagonalization results based on the t-J model. The underlying physics is attributed to the high-energy spin-charge separation in the model, in which the "mode coupling" responsible for the anomalous charge properties is not between the electrons and some collective mode but rather between charge carriers, holons, and a topological gauge field controlled by spin dynamics, as the consequence of the strong short-range electron-electron Coulomb repulsion in the doped Mott insulator.

Abstract:We study the response of a recently proposed global coupling model of charge-density waves to a joint ac+dc drive. The model is the standard Fukuyama-Lee-Rice model with an additional global coupling term to account for interaction with (uncondensed) quasi-particles. We find that traditional mode-locking is accompanied by hysteresis on mode-locked steps. The experimentally observed asymmetry in the size of hysteresis is reproduced and explained by drawing attention to the importance of the pinning force. For large values of global coupling, increased rigidity leads to vanishing of subharmonic steps consistent with experiments.

Abstract:We build a minimal model of dissipative vortex dynamics in two spatial dimensions, subject to a kinematic constraint: dipole conservation. The additional conservation law implies anomalously slow decay rates for vortices. We argue that this model of vortex dynamics is relevant for a broad range of time scales during a quench into a uniaxial charge density wave state. Our predictions are consistent with recent experiments on uniaxial charge density wave formation in $\mathrm{LaTe}_3$.

Effects of frequency mixing on Shapiro-step formations in sliding charge-density-waves

Abstract:A one-dimensional charge density wave (CDW) is driven to slide by a dc electric field, carrying an electric current. In an additional ac field with frequency ${\omega}_{\mathrm{ex}}$, it is known that the sliding CDW can be synchronized to $\omega_{\mathrm{ex}}$, leading to the occurrence of Shapiro steps in the $I$-$V$ characteristics. Motivated by a recent experiment where ac fields with two frequencies $\omega_{\mathrm{ex}}$ and $\omega_{\mathrm{ex}}^{\prime}$ are simultaneously applied, we theoretically investigate the effects of frequency mixing on the Shapiro-step formation. Based on the Fukuyama-Lee-Rice model, we show that in addition to the main steps induced by $\omega_{\mathrm{ex}}$, satellite steps characterized by $\omega_{\mathrm{ex}}^{\prime}$ emerge. It is also found that with increasing the ac-field strength for $\omega_{\mathrm{ex}}^{\prime}$, each step width first exhibits a damped oscillation as in the one-frequency case, and then, exhibits a non-monotonic behavior. The origin of these behaviors and the relevance to the associated experiment are also discussed.

Abstract:We report on new developments in the quantum picture of correlated electron transport in charge and spin density waves. The model treats the condensate as a quantum fluid in which charge soliton domain wall pairs nucleate above a Coulomb blockade threshold field. We employ a time-correlated soliton tunneling model, analogous to the theory of time-correlated single electron tunneling, to interpret the voltage oscillations and nonlinear current-voltage characteristics above threshold. An inverse scaling relationship between threshold field and dielectric response, originally proposed by Grüner, emerges naturally from the model. Flat dielectric and other ac responses below threshold in NbSe(3) and TaS(3), as well as small density wave phase displacements, indicate that the measured threshold is often much smaller than the classical depinning field. In some materials, the existence of two distinct threshold fields suggests that both soliton nucleation and classical depinning may occur. In our model, the ratio of electrostatic charging to pinning energy helps determine whether soliton nucleation or classical depinning dominates.

Abstract:We describe the collective hydrodynamic motion of an incommensurate charge density wave state in a clean electronic system. Our description simultaneously incorporates the effects of both pinning due to weak disorder and also phase relaxation due to proliferating dislocations. We show that the interplay between these two phenomena has important consequences for charge and momentum transport. For instance, it can lead to metal-insulator transitions. We furthermore identify signatures of fluctuating density waves in frequency and spatially resolved conductivities. Phase disordering is well known to lead to a large viscosity. We derive a precise formula for the phase relaxation rate in terms of the viscosity in the dislocation cores. We thereby determine the viscosity of the superconducting state of BSCCO from the observed melting dynamics of Abrikosov lattices and show that the result is consistent with dissipation into Bogoliubov quasiparticles.

Abstract:We report a systematic study of transport properties of nanosytems with charge density waves. We demonstrate, how the presence of density waves modifies the current-voltage characteristics. On the other hand hand, we show that the density waves themselves are strongly affected by the applied voltage. This self-consistent problem is solved within the formalism of the nonequilibrium Green functions. The conventional charge density waves occur only for specific, periodically distributed ranges of the voltage. Apart from the low voltage regime, they are incommensurate and the corresponding wave vectors decrease discontinuously when the voltage increases.

Abstract:We studied the lock-in transition of charge-density waves of one-dimensional conductors. Though this phenomenon has been known for decades, there are still discrepancies between the theories and the experiments. We focused on the pioneering study of this phenomenon by McMillan and revisited, in particular, his numerical calculations. We first reproduced his results by providing unwritten information in the article. The obtained critical point was in good agreement with the previous study, as well as the analytical solution proposed later. We found a simple power-law behavior of the free energy in the critical regime, leading to the power-law divergence of the specific heat. We also introduced the concept of stiffness, equivalent to helicity modulus, which also showed a power-law behavior. These results allowed us to propose a new perspective on the lock-in transition.

Abstract:Charge fluctuations are investigated in a d(x2-y2)-wave superconductor. Using t-t' tight-binding band, twin Desks show up around the incommensurate q=(pi+/-delta(0), pi+/-delta(0)) and (pi+/-delta(0), pi-/+delta(0)) at low frequencies which shift to q=(pi, pi+/-delta) and (pi+/-delta, pi) when the frequency is above a threshold omega(1). When the frequency is above another threshold omega(2) (> omega(1)), more intense peaks appear at q=(pi+/-delta', pi+/-delta') and (pi+/-delta', pi-/+delta'). These incommensurate charge fluctuations have fairly distinct: features when comparing to spin fluctuations and are fundamentally different from what should occur in a charge stripe phase.
Quantum Transport of Charge Density Wave Electrons in Layered Materials

Abstract:The charge density wave (CDW) is a condensate that often forms in layered materials. It is known to carry electric current \emph{en masse}, but the transport mechanism remains poorly understood at the microscopic level. Its quantum nature is revealed by several lines of evidence. Experiments often show lack of CDW displacement when biased just below the threshold for nonlinear transport, indicating the CDW never reaches the critical point for classical depinning. Quantum behavior is also revealed by oscillations of period $h/2e$ in CDW conductance vs. magnetic flux, sometimes accompanied by telegraph-like switching, in $\text{TaS}_3$ rings above 77 K. Here we discuss further evidence for quantum CDW electron transport. We find that, for temperatures ranging from 9 to 474 K, CDW current-voltage plots of three trichalcogenide materials agree almost precisely with a modified Zener-tunneling curve and with time-correlated soliton tunneling model simulations. In our model we treat the Schrödinger equation as an emergent classical equation that describes fluidic Josephson-like coupling of paired electrons between evolving topological states. We find that an extension of this \lq classically robust' quantum picture explains both the $h/2e$ magnetoconductance oscillations and switching behavior in CDW rings. We consider potential applications for thermally robust quantum information processing systems.

Abstract:We derive the convective terms in the damping which determine the structure of the moving charge-density wave (CDW), and study the effect of a current flowing transverse to conducting chains on the CDW dynamics along the chains. In contrast to a recent prediction we find that the effect is orders of magnitude smaller, and that contributions from transverse currents of electron- and hole-like quasiparticles to the force exerted on the CDW along the chains act in the opposite directions. We discuss recent experimental verification of the effect and demonstrate experimentally that geometry effects might mimic the transverse current effect.
Enhancement of Charge Density Wave Correlations in a Holstein Model with an Anharmonic Phonon Potential

Abstract:The Holstein Hamiltonian describes itinerant electrons whose site density couples to local phonon degrees of freedom. In the single site limit, at half-filling, the electron-phonon coupling results in a double well structure for the lattice displacement, favoring empty or doubly occupied sites. In two dimensions, and on a bipartite lattice in $d \geq 2$, an intersite hopping causes these doubly occupied and empty sites to alternate in a charge density wave (CDW) pattern when the temperature is lowered. Because a discrete symmetry is broken, this occurs in a conventional second-order transition at finite $T_{\rm cdw}$. In this paper, we investigate the effect of changing the phonon potential energy to one with an intrinsic double well structure even in the absence of an electron-phonon coupling. While this aids in the initial process of pair formation, the implications for subsequent CDW order are non-trivial. One expects that, when the electron-phonon coupling is too strong, the double wells become deep and the polaron mass large, an effect which reduces $T_{\rm cdw}$. We show here the existence of regions of parameter space where the double well potential, while aiding local pair formation, does so in a way which also substantially enhances long range CDW order.

Abstract:2H-NbSe2 is an archetypal system in which superconductivity and charge density wave (CDW) coexist and compete macroscopically with each other. In particular, this interplay also manifests in their dynamical fluctuations. As a result, the superconducting amplitude fluctuation (i.e., Higgs mode) is pushed below the quasiparticle continuum, allowing it to become a coherent excitation observable by Raman scattering. In the present study, we coherently drive the collective oscillations of the two orders and visualize their interplay in the time domain. We find that both collective modes contribute to terahertz third-harmonic generation (THG) and their THG signals interfere below Tc, leading to an antiresonance of the integrated THG signal. The dynamical Ginzburg-Landau model suggests that around the antiresonance a periodic energy transfer between the driven Higgs oscillations and the driven CDW oscillations is possible. Our results illustrate the roles of collective modes in the terahertz THG process, revealing a close connection of this technique to Raman scattering. In systems where the different collective modes are coupled, our experimental scheme also illustrates a paradigm for realizing coherent control via such couplings.

Abstract:Charge density wave (CDW) is an important concept in condensed matter physics, germane to a number of physical phenomena. But the origin of CDW is still under debate, partly because the origin and properties of CDW are highly material-dependent. The concept of a CDW has been applied to many materials without a clear definition of the fundamental nature of CDW. As a result, misconceptions about CDW can be seen in the literature. In this review, we will try to describe and explain the possible existing misconceptions associated with the origin of CDWs.

Abstract:The effects of quantum lattice fluctuations on the charge-density wave (CDW) of a one-dimensional one-band model for halogen-bridged mixed-valence linear chain complexes are studied by a functional integral approach. Equations for the phonon order parameter and the phonon excitations are derived within a one-loop approximation. They can be applied to any value of the ionic mass ranging from the M = 0 (antiadiabatic limit) to the M = infinity (adiabatic) limit. We find that the dimerized CDW survives the quantum lattice fluctuations for arbitrarily small electron-lattice coupling. In the case of finite ionic mass, the low-energy properties of the system are governed by the limit of M = 0 for a weak electron-phonon interaction, whereas they are governed by the adiabatic limit (M = infinity) for a stronger electron-phonon interaction.

Abstract:Magnetic Catalysis is a known proposal for inducing dynamical axionic gapped phases by means of external magnetic fields from a Weyl or Dirac semimetal phase. At finite Fermi level, the phase transition is of first order type and the magnetic field needs to reach a critical value for the transition to take place. Using the theory of bubble nucleation, we predict the order parameter features a hysteretic behavior as a function of the external magnetic field. We also analyze the experimental consequences of this hysteretic behavior in several observables like magneto-conductivity, magnetic susceptibility and nonlinear optical coefficients. This hysteretic behavior might serve as a fingerprint of Magnetic Catalysis in Condensed Matter systems.
