Abstract:Rapid room-temperature synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is highly desired for industrial implementation and commercialization. Here we find that a (Zn,Cu) hydroxy double salt (HDS) intermediate formed in situ from ZnO particles or thin films enables rapid growth (<1 min) of HKUST-1 (Cu3(BTC)2) at room temperature. The space-time-yield reaches >3 × 10(4) kg·m(-3)·d(-1), at least 1 order of magnitude greater than any prior report. The high anion exchange rate of (Zn,Cu) hydroxy nitrate HDS drives the ultrafast MOF formation. Similarly, we obtained Cu-BDC, ZIF-8, and IRMOF-3 structures from HDSs, demonstrating synthetic generality. Using ZnO thin films deposited via atomic layer deposition, MOF patterns are obtained on pre-patterned surfaces, and dense HKUST-1 coatings are grown onto various form factors, including polymer spheres, silicon wafers, and fibers. Breakthrough tests show that the MOF-functionalized fibers have high adsorption capacity for toxic gases. This rapid synthesis route is also promising for new MOF-based composite materials and applications.

Abstract:Protic deep eutectic mixtures are usually composed of organic amine hydrochloride salts and hydrogen bond donors in a specific molar ratio. Ionothermal synthesis of aluminophosphate as an example, herein, was reported for the first time from an urea-based protic eutectic mixture, consisting of diethylammonium chloride (DEACl) and 1,3-dimethyl urea (DMU). As a result, a new two dimensional aluminophosphate with 4.8-network, [CH3NH3](2)[(C2H5)(2)NH2]Al-3(PO4)(4), has been successfully synthesized by co-templating the DEA and methylamine in situ generated from the decomposition of DMU in the absence of HF. Compared to alkyl quaternary ammonium salts with more alkyl-group connected with N atom, this kind of organic amine salts are more likely as the structure-directing agents to synthesize aluminophosphates in urea-based deep eutectic mixtures. It was also found that HF is crucial to the phase selectivity, a known compound with chain-like structure was obtained with the single methylamine as a structure-directing agent in the presence of HF. These materials were characterized by powder XRD, SEM, TG-DSC, C-13 CP-MAS NMR and CHN analyses.

Abstract:Ordered large-pore (up to 12 nm) and stable mesoporous aluminophosphates (AlPO) have been synthesized by using block copolymer (EO106PO70EO106, Pluronic F127) as a structure-directing agent. The selection of inorganic precursors is based on an “acid–base pair” route. Three acid–base pair, including AlCl3/H3PO4, AlCl3/OP(OCH3)3 and Al(OC4H9)3/PCl3 are confirmed to be efficient for the assembly of periodic mesoporous frameworks. Ordered 2-D hexagonal mesoporous aluminophosphates can be obtained by using AlCl3/H3PO4 as precursors, while disordered mesoporous aluminophosphates are produced by using AlCl3/OP(OCH3)3 or Al(OC4H9)3/PCl3 as precursors. BET surface areas and pore sizes of the products vary from 261 to 115 m2/g and from 9.4 to 12 nm, respectively. The solution and solid state 27Al and 31P MAS NMR were used to characterize the chemical environment of aluminium and phosphorus before and after the formation of mesostructured AlPO products, which simultaneously allows us to evaluate the efficiency of inorganic–inorganic (I–I) interactions (Al–O–P) of different acid–base pair. Both 27Al and 31P MAS NMR results show that among the three acid–base pair, AlCl3/H3PO4 pair interacts more readily with each other than the other two pairs [AlCl3/OP(OCH3)3, Al(OC4H9)3/PCl3], and tends to form rigid framework before calcination. The detailed structural characterizations reveal that strong I–I interactions (Al–O–P) between inorganic precursors will lead to a final mesoporous material with high structure regularity. This method can also be applied to synthesize iron-incorporated aluminophosphate (FeAlPO) with highly ordered 2-D hexagonal structure. BET surface area and pore size of FeAlPO prepared with Fe/Al=0.1 (molar ratio) are 181 m2/g and 8.9 nm, respectively. Electron spin resonance (ESR) and UV–vis spectra were employed to characterize the chemical state of Fe3+ ion.

Abstract:A series of highly ordered mesoporous carbonaceous frameworks with diverse symmetries have been successfully synthesized by using phenolic resols as a carbon precursor and mixed amphiphilic surfactants of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) and reverse PPO-PEO-PPO as templates by the strategy of evaporation-induced organic-organic self-assembly (EISA). The transformation of the ordered mesostructures from face-centered (Fd3m) to body-centered cubic (Im3m), then 2D hexagonal (P6mm), and eventually to cubic bicontinuous (Ia3d) symmetry has been achieved by simply adjusting the ratio of triblock copolymers to resol precursor and the relative content of PEO-PPO-PEO copolymer F127, as confirmed by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen-sorption measurements. The blends of block copolymers can interact with resol precursors and tend to self-assemble into cross-linking micellar structures during the solvent-evaporation process, which provides a suitable template for the construction of mesostructures. The assembly force comes from the hydrogen-bonding interactions between organic mixed micelles and the resol-precursor matrix. The BET surface area for the mesoporous carbonaceous samples calcined at 600 degrees C under nitrogen atmosphere is around 600 m2 g(-1), and the pore size can be adjusted from 2.8 to 5.4 nm. An understanding of the organic-organic self-assembly behavior in the mixed amphiphilic surfactant system would pave the way for the synthesis of mesoporous materials with controllable structures.

Abstract:Highly ordered self-assembly organized silica meso-structured architectures have attracted increasing attention because these materials provide a rich source for scientific research and technological applications. This approach to meso-structured materials has been extended to non-silica oxides, especially transition-metal-oxides which might promise applications involving electron transfer or magnetic interactions. We report the syntheses of transition-metal-oxides meso-structured thin films (MSTF), such as TiO 2 , V 2 O 5 , Fe 2 O 3 and Nb 2 O 5 , using a surfactant templating processing with spin coating method. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films showed that the films generally oriented in a lamellar structure. The phase transferring in V205 MSTF was also investigated.

Abstract:A facile aqueous pathway has been demonstrated for the synthesis of ordered mesoporous carbon materials with hexagonal or cubic structures through the self-assembly of phenol/formaldehyde resols and triblock copolymer templates. Highly ordered mesoporous carbons FDU-16 with body-centered cubic structure (space group Im3m) have been synthesized under a basic aqueous condition by using triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 (EO106PO70EO106) as a template. Hydrocarbon (hexadecane or decane) can be used in the Pluronic P123 (EO20PO70EO20) system as a swelling agent to synthesize highly ordered mesoporous carbons FDU-15 with 2-D hexagonal (p6m) structure. The pore size of FDU-15 can be tailored from 4.1 to 6.8 nm by simply varying the hydrocarbon molecules. Mesoporous carbon materials FDU-14 with bicontinuous cubic (Ia3d) structure can be formed at a P123/phenol molar ratio higher than 0.04. Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silica materials (SBA-family) with 2-D hexagonal (p6mm) and 3-D cubic (Im3m) symmetry have been efficiently synthesized by using the mixture of triblock copolymer surfactant and sodium dodecylsulfonate as co-templates at relatively low concentration. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms are used to characterize these mesoporous silica materials, and the results show that the mesoporous silica mateials synthesized from the mixed surfactants have better mesostructural order and smaller mesopore size, compared with mesoporous silica materials of SBA-15 and SBA-16. Moreover, the microporosity in these ordered mesoporous materials is well controlled by the weight ratios of polymer surfactant to anionic surfactant. Particularly, when P123 concentration in the starting gel is reduced to less than 0.4wt.%, the walls of ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica are micropore-free.

Abstract:TiO2 thin films with a hexagonal mesoporous structure and an anatase-type crystalline framework are easily synthesized by a sol–gel method at low pH, using an EO–PO–EO block copolymer as template. While the TiO2/polymer superstructure originally has a primitive cubic structure, annealing at 150 °C affords a phase transition to hexagonal (see Figure), which persists upon template removal by calcination.

Abstract:Two new organically templated manganese phosphate oxalates were synthesized under solvent-free conditions. They have different three-dimensional structures with a (4,6)-connected fsh topology. It is interesting that the amine molecules can reverse the structure-building roles of the metal phosphate skeleton and metal oxalate substructure for formation of their fsh-type frameworks.

Abstract:Successive mesophase transformation induced by an anionic surfactant such as sodium dioctyl sulfosuccinate (AOT) has been demonstrated to fabricate four kinds of large pore mesoporous silica materials in a triblock copolymer F127 surfactant assembly system. The transformation of the highly ordered mesostructures from face-centered cubic (space group Fm (3) over barm) to body-centered Im (3) over barm then towards two-dimensional (2-D) hexagonal p6m and eventually to cubic bicontinuous Ia (3) over bard symmetries has been achieved by tuning the amount of AOT and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB). Characterization by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and N-2 sorption isotherms reveals that all mesoporous silica structures have highly ordered regularity in large domains and possess high surface areas, large pore volumes and uniform pore sizes. The expansion of hydrophobic volume in the amphiphilic Pluronic F127 surfactant associated with AOT and TMB molecules in an acidic media is attributed to the observed mesophase transformation. A further swelling of the surfactant micelles can be achieved by adding TMB molecules into the mixed AOT and F127 surfactants system due to their synergistic solubility enhancement, which gives rise to a long-range ordered 2-D hexagonal mesoporous silica structure with very large cell parameter (a = 16.5 nm) and pore size (similar to 12 nm). The understanding of the blend-surfactant assembly mechanism will lead to a more rational approach for economical and large-scale production of mesoporous materials with controllable structures.

Abstract:Nanoscale porous metal–organic frameworks and related materials have received considerable attention in recent years due to their widespread applications. However, the effective synthesis of magnetic core–shell MOFs still remains a significant challenge. In this article, a Fe3O4@ZIF-8 core–shell nanostructure with unique morphology, a large specific surface area, excellent thermal stability, and superparamagnetic properties is reported. Additionally, instead of using organic surfactants, a surfactant-free and facile synthesis route is successfully developed. The ZIF-8 shell thickness can be precisely controlled by altering the number of growth cycles. Fe3O4@ZIF-8 shows good adsorption properties for MB, with maximum adsorption capacity of 20.2 mg g−1.

Abstract:Surfactants have been shown to organize silica into a variety of mesoporous forms, through the mediation of electrostatic, hydrogen-bonding, covalent and van der Waals interactions1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. This approach to mesostructured materials has been extended, with sporadic success, to non-silica oxides5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17, which might promise applications involving electron transfer or magnetic interactions. Here we report a simple and versatile procedure for the synthesis of thermally stable, ordered, large-pore (up to 140 Å) mesoporous metal oxides, including TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3, Nb2O5, Ta2O5, WO3, HfO2, SnO2, and mixed oxides SiAlO3.5, SiTiO4, ZrTiO4, Al2TiO5 and ZrW2O8. We used amphiphilic poly(alkylene oxide) block copolymers as structure-directing agents in non-aqueous solutions for organizing the network-forming metal-oxide species, for which inorganic salts serve as precursors. Whereas the pore walls of surfactant-templated mesoporous silica1 are amorphous, our mesoporous oxides contain nanocrystalline domains within relatively thick amorphous walls. We believe that these materials are formed through a mechanism that combines block copolymer self-assembly with complexation of the inorganic species.

Abstract:Highly ordered cubic mesostructured zirconium oxophosphate with Pm3n symmetry analogous to SBA-1 silica is first obtained by using tri-headgroup quaternary ammonium surfactant CH3(CH2)(16)CH2N(CH3)(2)CH2CH2N(CH3)(2)CH2CH2CH2N(CH3)(3)Br-3 (C18-2-3-1) as a structure-directing agent and zirconium sulfate as an inorganic precursor under hydrothermal condition. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and P-31 magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) have been used to characterize these mesostructured zirconium-based composites. The cubic mesostructured zirconium oxophosphates are thermally stable up to 500 degreesC. In addition, a phase transition from Pm3n through mixed mesophase to p6m symmetry is observed through finely tuning the spacer methylene chain length among the hydrophilic headgroups in the multi-charged amphiphile (from C18-2-3-1 through C18-3-3-1 to C18-3-4-1). P-31 MAS NMR spectra show that phosphorus has four types of chemical environments in the cubic mesostructured zirconium oxophosphate framework and three types of chemical environments in mixed or hexagonal zirconium oxophosphate mesophases.

We first report the conductive oriented silica meso-structure film synthesized by ferrocenyl surfactant templating using a spin-coating method. The X-ray diffraction pattern of the film shows that the phase is lamellar. The electronic conductivity properties of the film are also observed.

Abstract:A template-free synthesis of a hierarchical microporous-mesoporous metal-organic framework (MOF) of zinc(II) 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (Zn-MOF-74) is reported. The surface morphology and porosity of the bimodal materials can be modified by etching the pore walls with various synthesis solvents for different reaction times. This template-free strategy enables the preparation of stable frameworks with mesopores exceeding 15 nm, which was previously unattained in the synthesis of MOFs by the ligand-extension method.

Abstract:Photosensitive copper phthalocyanine-(CuPc) doped silica mesoporous materials (in powder) have been directly synthesized by a self-organizing coassembly process using a functional surfactant, 11-ferrocenyltrimethylundecylammonium (ferrocenyl TMA) molecules. This simple method shows that it is not necessary to dope molecules into mesoporous channels after the pore becomes opened by calcination. X-Ray diffraction patterns (XRD) show the typical hexagonal diffraction pattern of the mesoporous materials. Optical absorption spectra of these powders show the typical band of the CuPc molecule.
