This paper proposes an optimization-based coarse alignment approach using GPS position/velocity as input, founded on the newly-derived velocity/position integration formulae. Simulation and flight test results show that, with the GPS lever arm well handled, it is potentially able to yield the initial heading up to one degree accuracy in ten seconds. It can serve as a nice coarse in-flight alignment without any prior attitude information for the subsequent fine Kalman alignment. The approach can also be applied to other applications that require aligning the INS on the run.

Abstract:Inertial navigation applications are usually referenced to a rotating frame. A COROTATIONAL UPDATED LAGRANGIAN FORMULATION FOR GEOMETRICALLY NONLINEAR ANALYSIS OF 2D FRAMES

Abstract:A method is presented for geometrically nonlinear analysis of 2D frames. An updated Lagrangian (UL) formulation is used to calculate the incremental nodal displacements, and incremental nodal forces are recovered by a corotational formulation whose configuration (Cr) is derived from a rigid-body motion of the last calculated configuration (C1) in equilibrium. Firstly, the equation of virtual work is expressed in terms of incremental nodal natural deformations in Cr; then, the relations are deduced between the incremental nodal natural deformations in Cr and the incremental nodal displacement vector in C1. Adopting the relations in the equation of virtual work, the tangent stiffness matrix for incremental nodal forces is obtained for Cr, and it can pass a rigid-body test. The analysis has considered the loaded deformations which will result in an additional matrix in the tangent stiffness matrix. The numerical examples show that: with fewer elements, the presented method can achieve similar precision to UL formulation; the matrix with respect to the loaded deformation can effectively improve the efficiency, but it may result in membrane locking if the deformation is large.

Abstract:The integrated system with the strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) and the global positioning system (GPS) is the most popular navigation mode. It has been used in many navigation fields. Before the integrated system works properly, it must determine the initial attitude for SINS. In SINS/GPS-integrated systems, the navigational velocity can be used to carry out the initial alignment when the system is installed in the in-motion vehicle. However, the initial velocity errors are not considered in the current popular in-motion alignment methods for SINS/GPS integration. It is well-known that the initial velocity errors must exist when the initial velocity is obtained from the GPS outputs. In this paper, an improved method was proposed to solve this problem. By analyzing the original observation vectors in the in-motion coarse alignment method, an average operation was used to construct the intermediate vectors, and the new observation vector can be calculated by subtracting the intermediate vector from the original observation vector. Then, the initial velocity errors can be eliminated from the newly constructed observation vector. Thus, the interferences of the initial velocity errors for the initial alignment process can be suppressed. The simulation and field tests are designed to verify the performance of the proposed method. The tests results showed that the proposed method can obtain the higher accurate results than the current methods when the initial velocity is considered. Additionally, the results of the proposed method were similar to the current methods when the initial velocity errors were not considered. This shows that the initial velocity errors were eliminated effectively by the proposed method, and the alignment accuracy were not decreased.

A Novel Robust Position Integration Optimization-Based Alignment Method for In-Flight Coarse Alignment

Abstract:In-flight alignment is a critical milestone for inertial navigation system/global navigation satellite system (INS/GNSS) applications in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The traditional position integration formula for in-flight coarse alignment requires the GNSS velocity data to be valid throughout the alignment period, which greatly limits the engineering applicability of the method. In this paper, a new robust position integration optimization-based alignment (OBA) method for in-flight coarse alignment is presented to solve the problem of in-flight alignment under a prolonged ineffective GNSS. In this methodology, to achieve a higher alignment accuracy in case the GNSS is not effective throughout the alignment period, the integration of GNSS velocity into the local-level navigation frame is replaced by the GNSS position in the Earth-centered, Earth-fixed frame, which avoids the need for complete GNSS velocity data. The simulation and flight test results show that the new robust position integration method proposed in this paper achieves higher stability and robustness than the conventional position integration OBA method and can achieve an alignment accuracy of 0.2° even when the GNSS is partially time-invalidated. Thus, this greatly extends the application of the OBA method for in-flight alignment.

Abstract:The self-alignment of strapdown inertial navigation system that does not depend on any external aid still has huge application requirements. This study presents an anti-swaying self-alignment method based on the inertia tensor of gravity observation vectors and aims to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the latitude and attitude estimation by making full use of inertial measurements. The time-varying attitude matrix is decomposed first to isolate the swaying interference and gravity observation vectors are reconstructed to smooth the measurement noise. Then the body attitude estimation with unknown latitude is defined as an extended Wahba problem, which is solved by eigenvalue decomposition based on the inertia tensor of gravity observation vectors. Simulation and experiments verify the effectiveness of the proposed method and two common methods are used for comparison, which show that the proposed method has faster convergence speed, stronger anti-interference ability, and higher accuracy of the latitude and attitude estimation.
Transfer Alignment of Velocity and Double Integration of Angular Rate Matching

Abstract:The effects of carrier flexure deformation on transfer alignment were reduced using a developed ＂velocity ＋ double-integration of angular rate＂（VDAR） matching method.Compared with the attitude matching method,the double-integration of angular rate matching method is insensitive to carrier flexure deformation,with the VDAR matching method,combined with the velocity matching method,reducing the transfer alignment errors caused by flexure deformation.Monte Carlo simulations of transfer alignment based on the wing flexure data measured in a flight test show that the maximum attitude estimate error obtained by using the VDAR matching is reduced by more than 30% with the gyro and accelerometer bias estimate errors also decreased,compared with using the traditional ＂velocity ＋ attitude＂ matching.A vehicle test validates the developed method efficiency.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that the purposive maneuver of the guided projectile is difficult to be realized during its short flight time, a method based on large acceleration change using double-vector observations for the in-flight alignment was proposed. First, according to the navigation velocity rate equation, double-vector observations were derived, and the Request algorithm was introduced for the initial attitude estimation. Then, error analysis was discussed, which puts forward a large acceleration change for the in-flight alignment. Simulation experiment analyzed and discussed the effectiveness of the proposed large acceleration change for the in-flight alignment. The simulation result indicated that the in-flight alignment can be achieved quickly, and the heading misalignment error is about 0.3°, the pitch and rolling misalignment errors are less than 0.2°.

Abstract:The strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS) and Doppler velocity log (DVL) are the major positioning system for underwater vehicles. The initial alignment process is the first working stage of SINS/DVL integration. Currently, the initial alignment method for SINS/DVL integration is imperfect. The major problems can be summarized in two aspects. One is the initial velocity errors and outliers of DVL outputs, which are not suppressed simultaneously. The other is the positioning uncertainty when the attitude alignment is finished. To address these two problems, robust attitude and positioning alignment methods are proposed in this article. First, a vector observation, which is based on the sliding windows improvements, is constructed for eliminating the initial velocity errors. Second, the apparent velocity motion model for the vector observation with the sliding window improvements is constructed. Based on the constructed model, a parameter estimation method, which is established by a robust Kalman filter, is proposed. Using the estimated parameters, the new observed vectors are reconstructed. Thus, the robust attitude alignment process is finished. Third, real-time and postprocessing positioning alignment methods are proposed for addressing positioning uncertainty. At last, the simulation and field tests are designed for verifying the performance of the proposed method. The test results are shown that the existing two problems are overcome.

A New Rapid Transfer Alignment Method and the Analysis of Observable Degree

Abstract:Transfer alignment is the first choice of initial alignment of air-borne or ship-borne weapon's inertial navigation system (SINS), cause it can achieve high alignment accuracy and speed, by utilizing the high accuracy navigation massage of the master inertial navigation system (MISN) sufficiency. In order to realize rapid transfer alignment, American researcher Kain abandon the classical method of defining attitude error in navigation coordinate, but defined the real attitude error and compute attitude error in body coordinate and established error models, and present the famous velocity plus attitude matching rapid transfer alignment prototype based on this error model. This paper present a 'velocity plus rate' matching rapid transfer alignment method based on Kain's error model, and improve the singular value decomposition based observable degree analysis method. The results of analysis about observable degree show that the method present in this paper can heighten the observable degree of the real attitude error, simulation results validate the conclusion of the theoretic analysis, also indicate that the accuracy of estimation about the attitude error in every axis is increased, especially, the estimation error about the azimuth is one in third of the original one.

Abstract:In this article, a new position loci-based in-motion initial alignment method is proposed for a low-cost attitude and heading reference system (AHRS). A new sliding-window-based position integration method is proposed to construct the position vector observations, which weakens the accumulated errors induced by the inertial measurement unit (IMU) bias errors in vector observations. Also, a new closed-loop method is proposed to jointly estimate the time-varying body attitude matrix and the unknown IMU biases and global position system (GPS) lever-arm based on the Kalman filter. The estimates of the time-varying body attitude matrix, IMU biases, and GPS lever-arm are all used to construct and compensate for the position vector observations, which improves the alignment accuracy. Both the simulation and car-mounted test results illustrate that the proposed alignment method can achieve better alignment accuracy than these existing methods for a position loci-aided low-cost AHRS.

A Self-Alignment Method on Large Swing Situations

Abstract:On the influence of some disturbances such as wind, the large amplitude motion will be caused.In these situations, for the strapdown inertial navigation system, there are the large misalignments in the initial phase, and the errors caused by misalignments can not be directly observed.However, for self-alignment, the information of these errors is very important.Since the system does not move in the swing situation, there exists a shake center whose speed is zero.If the system is a rigid body, then the attitude errors in the shake center are same as that in all of the system, and the self-alignment problem in shake center is same as that in the stationary case.Therefore, we only need to obtain the attitude errors in the shake center.Based on the principle of the lever arm effect, we provide a method to obtain the position of the shake center from the measurements of inertial measurement unit.To estimate the position of shake center, the level attitude errors are estimated at same time to reduce the model uncertainty.We also show that the alignment accuracy can be improved step by step by using the estimated parameters to compensate the system model uncertainty in the large misalignment case.Finally, some simulation results are presented to verify the method given in this paper.

Abstract:In this paper, an improved in-motion alignment method for SINS/GPS integration is proposed. The alignment errors, which are caused by the maneuvering of the vehicle and the accumulated errors of inertial sensor errors, are suppressed. Firstly, the traditional in-motion alignment method for SINS/GPS integration is reviewed, and the existing problems, which are accumulated errors in the observed vectors, are investigated. To address these problems, a sliding windows operation for vector observation optimization is proposed. The derivation for the calculation of the new vector observations is given in detail. Using the new vector observations, the accumulated errors, which are existing in the observed vectors, are weakened. Thus, the alignment results are more stable whenever any maneuvering of the vehicle. Lastly, the simulation and field tests are designed for verification of the proposed method. Compared with the currently popular methods, the alignment errors are converged to a small value quickly.

Abstract:Inertial frame alignment (IFA) for strapdown inertial navigation systems is widely considered to be a promising method due to its robustness to disturbances and noise. By using the velocity data from a Doppler velocity log (DVL), the IFA can be performed while the vehicle is in motion. However, this article reveals that the initial velocity error of the DVL at the startup continuously and considerably affects the precision of the in-motion IFA. Based on the formula derived with other sensor errors isolated, the azimuth error is proportional to the initial velocity error and is inversely proportional to the square of time, e.g., a 0.3 m/s measurement error in the initial velocity from the Doppler velocity log leading to a considerable azimuth error of more than 1.78° in five minutes. Moreover, the azimuth error becomes bulky if the latitude is high. The modified cost function with a constant vector is used to replace the cost function from the well-known Wahba's problem. Thus, an alignment result with a much higher precision and with the initial velocity error suppressed can be obtained in a short period of time. The vehicular experimental results further verify the error analysis and the improved method.

Attitude Reconstruction from Inertial Measurement: Mitigating Runge Effect for Dynamic Applications

Abstract:Time-equispaced inertial measurements are practically used as inputs for motion determination. Polynomial interpolation is a common technique of recovering the gyroscope signal but is subject to a fundamentally numerical stability problem due to the Runge effect on equispaced samples. This paper reviews the theoretical results of Runge phenomenon in related areas and proposes a straightforward borrowing-and-cutting (BAC) strategy to depress it. It employs the neighboring samples for higher-order polynomial interpolation but only uses the middle polynomial segment in the actual time interval. The BAC strategy has been incorporated into attitude computation by functional iteration, leading to accuracy benefit of several orders of magnitude under the classical coning motion. It would potentially bring significant benefits to the inertial navigation computation under sustained dynamic motions.
