Abstract:Detection of partial discharge (PD) is an effective technical means to discover the sudden and developing insulation defects. PD is accompanied by a variety of transient physical phenomena, which are essentially the proliferation, disappearance and transfer of charge in the process of ionization. The current coupled in the circuit is an important indicator of the discharge. Measurement of current pulses developed by such principle has been the standard test method for insulation parts and has become the only criterion for calibrating the discharge capacity. However, the broadband measurement is insensitive to the low-frequency current, thus cannot detect the electric field-drive behavior of the slow charges generated by the PDs. To research the slow charge dynamic during PD, a narrowband measurement of detecting the excess current induced by PD is used in this work, and considering the horizontal and vertical path for the PD-induced current, a tri-electrode system is designed for dividing the current into the surface and the bulk part. Excess current is the current accompanying PD activities, which can be quantified by measuring the dielectric response current flowing through the defect before and during PD. The principle is based on the assumption that the capacitive current is proportional to the voltage. By canceling (removing) the capacitive current during the PD process, an excess current purely related to the PD is obtained. The experimental results show that the low frequency current which cannot be detected by the pulse current method does exist in the PD process. The amplitude of the excess current waveform is higher than the average discharge current, and the phase distribution is a little wider than the latter. The discharge quantity of the positive and negative current of the excess current is higher than that of the PD pulse current. The analysis of the net excess current reflects the current characteristics of the slow moving charge in the PD process. Through waveform analysis and geometric capacitance measurement, it can be seen that the presence of geometric capacity will have a large impact on the measurement of surface current.
