Abstract:A novel class of preorganized U-shape calix[4]arene clefts, dicationic salts 3a,c,e.2Cl, 3b.2PF(6)(), and 3f.2Br, consisting of one cone calix[4]arene and two bipyridine residues being linked by an aliphatic chain, have been designed and synthesized as precursors for self-assembly of calix[4]arene [2]catenanes by utilizing pi-stacking interactions between the hydroquinone and bipyridinium units. Conformationally flexible 6.2PF(6)() and cone 10.2Cl, whose conformation is fixed by two propyloxy groups on the lower rim, were also prepared in order to explore the effects of conformation and hydrogen bonding of the calix[4]arene moiety on self-assembly. For all reactions, bis-p-phenylene-34-crown ether-10 (11) was employed as the donor component. Alternate cone [2]catenane 13.4Cl is obtained in 8% yield from reaction of ethylene-incorporating 3a.2Cl and 1,4-bis(bromomethyl)benzene (12a). Three cone and one conformationally flexible [2]catenanes were obtained in moderate to good yields from reactions of propylene-incorporating 3b.PF(6)() and 3c.2Cl with 12a, 1,3-bis(bromomethyl)benzene (12b) or 4,4'-(bromomethyl)biphenyl (12c). Both cone and partial cone [2]catenanes were generated in moderate yields from butylene-incorporating 3c.2Cl with four tert-butyl groups on the calix[4]arene moiety and with 12a. In contrast, only cone [2]catenane was obtained from similar tert-butyl-free cleft 3d.2Cl. Cone and conformationally flexible [2]catenanes were obtained in moderate yields, respectively, from the reactions of 3d.2Cl and 3e.2Cl with 12c. No catenanes were isolated from reaction of phenylene-incorporating 3f.2Br or 6.2Cl, whereas reaction of 10.2Cl afforded cone [2]catenane in low yield. It was demonstrated that hydrogen bonding, which may be destroyed after catenation, within the calix[4]arene moiety is crucial for efficient self-assembly of the [2]catenanes. The dynamic (1)H NMR and absorption spectra and luminescent properties of the [2]catenanes were investigated, which reveal that incorporation of calix[4]arene into the tetracationic cyclophane reduces pi-stacking interactions between the donor and acceptor units and catenation has substantial influence on conformational distributions of the calix[4]arene moiety. The results demonstrate the versatility of calix[4]arene derivatives as building blocks in the construction of supramolecular structures.
[2]Catenane Assembly From Calix[4]Arene Crown Ethers

Abstract:A variety of novel calix[4]arene-incorporating crown ethers with or without intramolecular hydrogen bonding have been prepared by two efficient methods and utilized as donor rings to assemble calix[4]arene [2]catenanes based on n-stacking interaction between hydroquinone and bipyridinium units. Treatment of calix[4]arene crown ethers 4, 10a, or 10b, whose cone conformation was fixed by intramolecular hydrogen bonding within the calix[4]arene moiety, with dicationic salt 15.2PF(6) and dibromide 16 afforded the corresponding [2]catenanes 17a.4PF(6), 17b.4PF(6), and 17c.4PF(6) in 20%, 53%, and 55% yields, respectively, whereas from the reactions of 15.2PF(6) and dibromide 16 in the presence of conformationally flexible 11 or 12 with a cone conformation kept by two propyl groups, [2]catenanes 18.4PF(6) and 19.4PF(6) were obtained in 12% and 6% yields. [2]Catenanes 21a.4C, 21b.4Cl, and 21c.4Cl, incorporating calix[4]arene in both the donor and acceptor rings, were also successfully assembled from 10a or 10b, 16, and dicationic salts 20a.2PF(6) or 20b.2PF(6). The dynamic H-1 NMR and absorption spectra of the [2]catenanes have been investigated, which revealed a strongest donor-acceptor interaction in 17a.4PF(6) and that the cone [2]catenanes 17a.4Cl can isomerize to the partial cone isomer at high temperature. The difference of the dynamic properties of these catenanes was discussed. The results demonstrate that catenation is one new general method to change the conformational distributions of calix[4]arenes.

Abstract:A multicatenane is described in which two belts consisting of four annelated rings attached to the wide rims of two calix[4]arenes are interwoven in such a way that each ring of one belt penetrates two adjacent rings of the other belt and vice versa. The key step of the synthesis of this [8]catenane is the exclusive formation of preorganized heterodimers between a multimacrocyclic tetraurea calix[4]arene and an “open-chain” tetraurea calix[4]arene containing eight ω-alkenyl groups. When a tetraurea calix[4]arene containing four alkenyl groups is used, a bis-[3]catenane is formed analogously.

Abstract:One linear template 13 and one cyclophane template 15, both incorporating two electron rich 1, 4-dialkoxybenzene units and one diamide unit, have been synthesized. By utilizing donor-acceptor interaction and/or intermolecular hydrogen bonding assembling principles, one novel hetero[3]rotaxane 22-40, possessing one neutral and one tetracationic ring components, has been synthesized from 13, through neutral [2]rotaxane 21 as intermediate. With 15 as template, tetracationic [2]catenane 23 .4PF(6) was assembled by using donor-acceptor interaction, but no neutral [2]rotaxane could he obtained under the typical conditions of hydrogen bonding assembling principle. The interlocked supramolecular compounds have been characterized and their spectral properties are investigated.

Abstract:Two novel calix[4]arene-based tetrapyrazolyl cavitands with different cavity size were synthesized by multistep reactions. In the solid state, one of the cavitands forms an infinite chain by intermolecular hydrogen bonding. The other cavitand undergoes coordination self-assembly with dimetal corners to form a supramolecular cage.

Abstract:Four catenanes having a tetrathiafulvalene unit in the biscyclic macrocycle and cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) in the second macrocycle are described. The TTF units locked inside the cyclophane cages do not isomerize even in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid. One of the four catenanes is shown on the right.

Abstract:Here, we report the efficient syntheses of a dodecacationic [3]catenane, which consists of three mechanically interlocked 4+ charged rings despite their mutual Coulombic repulsion, and a tetracosacationic radial [5]catenane, which consists of four 4+ charged rings mechanically interlocked around an 8+ charged ring and bears up to 24 positive charges in its co-constitution. The solid-state structures, determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, show that the two mechanical bonds in the [3]catenane result in the nano-confinement of 12 positive charges within a volume of less than 1.65 nm3, corresponding to 7.3 positive charges per nm3, whereas the radial [5]catenane has a charge density of 6.0 positive charges per nm3 and a molecular length of up to 3.7 nm. The template-directed strategy for constructing mechanically interlocked molecules, consisting of multiply charged rings, represents a departure in chemistry tantamount to producing a blueprint for exploring a novel class of organic molecules that boast large numbers and high densities of like charges.

Abstract:Recent progress in self-assembly of calixarene derivatives in different dimensions has been reviewed. It mainly includes zero dimension assembly leading to capsules, micelles, dendrimers and molecular boxes, one dimension assembly to nanofibers, nanotubes and two dimension assembly to ultra-thin membranes and assemblies on interfaces, etc. The mechanisms and driving forces, which include hydrogen bonding, metal-ligand, electrostatic, host-guest and hydrophobic interactions, for the assembly and the transitions between assemblies with different dimensions have been discussed. The transitions can be controlled in order to meet the requirements in varies applications of the assembled materials

Abstract:Cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) represent a significant challenge for the synthesis of mechanically interlocked architectures, because they lack heteroatoms, which precludes traditional active and passive template methods. To circumvent this problem and explore the fundamental and functional properties of CPP rotaxanes and catenanes, researches have resorted to unusual non-covalent and even to labor-intensive covalent template approaches. Herein, we report a ring-in-ring non-covalent template strategy that makes use of the surprisingly strong non-covalent inclusion of crown ethers into suitably sized CPPs. By threading a secondary ammonium salt through the crown ether and closing the third ring via Cu-AAC click reaction, we obtained a hetero-[3]catenane comprising [12]CPP, 24-crown-8 and a dibenzylammonium macrocycle. X-ray crystallography shed light on the ring-in-ring pre-organization and the [3]catenane topology was confirmed by NMR and MS-MS studies. Molecular simulations provided insights into the intriguing ring-vs.-ring-vs.-ring dynamics of the [3]catenane, which are highly dependent on the protonation state of the dibenzylammonium site. This ring-in-ring assembly strategy opens new avenues for the synthesis of complex CPP architectures and their use in functional supramolecular systems.

Abstract:Self-assembly by means of coordinative bond formation has opened up opportunities for the high-yield synthesis of molecules with complex topologies. However, the preparation of purely covalent molecular architectures in aqueous media has remained a challenging task. Here, we present the preparation of a three-dimensional catenane through a self-assembly process that relies on the formation of dynamic hydrazone linkages in an acidic aqueous medium. The quantitative synthesis process and the mechanically interlocked structure of the resulting catenane were established by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography and HPLC studies. In addition, the labile hydrazone linkages of the individual [2]catenane components may be ‘locked’ by increasing the pH of the solution, yielding a relatively kinetically stable molecule. The present study thus details a simple approach to the creation and control of complex molecular architectures under reaction conditions that mimic biological milieux.

Abstract:Heteracalixaromatics are an emerging generation of macrocyclic host molecules in supramolecular chemistry. As a typical example of heteracalixaromatics, oxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine adopts a shape-persistent 1,3-alternate conformation and can be easily functionalized. Taking it as a platform, a series of oxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine-based amphiphiles bearing long alkyl chains were synthesized through post-macrocyclization functionalization or 3+1 fragment coupling protocols. The self-assembly behavior of these amphiphiles in a mixture of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water was investigated. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements revealed that the size of the self-assembled aggregates is dependent on the structure of the amphiphiles. The long alkyl chain substituents and/or intermolecular hydrogen bonds were found to promote the self-assembly.

Abstract:Herein, we have successfully achieved the stereoselective synthesis of two chiral radial [5]catenanes in a single step through the self-assembly of bidentate ligands containing l-alanine residues and binuclear half-sandwich organometallic rhodium(III)/iridium(III) clips. Remarkably, these two chiral radial [5]catenanes exhibit complex stereochemical structures as revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The eight binuclear units and eight bidentate ligands in their solid-state structures all exhibit a single planar chirality, and the interlocking between molecular macrocycles exhibits a single co-conformational mechanical helical chirality. This indicates that the introduction of the point chirality in the ligands enables the efficient stereoselective construction of mechanically interlocked molecules. Furthermore, by using ligands containing d-alanine residues, radial [5]catenanes with the opposite planar chirality and opposite co-conformational mechanical helical chirality have also been obtained.

Abstract:Novel dynamic [2]catenanes interlocked by the quadruple hydrogen bonding ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) motif have been developed. The dynamic catenation process was due to the selective cyclization of bifunctional UPy molecules over a wide concentration range with the assistance of the cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT(4+)) macrocycle. The self-assembled [2] catenanes were stabilized by a combination of different non-covalent interactions comprising quadruple hydrogen bonding and host-guest interactions. This type of non-covalent bonded catenane is the first one interlocked by multiple hydrogen bonding interactions instead of metal-ligand interactions.

Abstract:Although catenated cages have been widely constructed due to their unique and elegant topological structures, cyclic catenanes formed by the connection of multiple catenane units have been rarely reported. Herein, based on the orthogonal metal-coordination-driven self-assembly, we prepare a series of heterometallic [2]catenanes and cyclic bis[2]catenanes, whose structures are clearly evidenced by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Owing to the multiple positively charged nature, as well as the potential synergistic effect of the Cu(I) and Pt(II) metal ions, the cyclic bis[2]catenanes display broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. This work not only provides an efficient strategy for the construction of heterometallic [2]catenanes and cyclic bis[2]catenanes but also explores their applications as superior antibacterial agents, which will promote the construction of advanced supramolecular structures for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Two new copper-thiacalix[4]arene compounds, [Cu-2(1)-Cl-2(H(4)TC4A)](CH3OH) (1) and [Cu(I)2Cl(2)(H(4)PTC4A)](CH3OH)(CHCl3)(0.5) (2) (where H(4)TC4A = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene and H(4)PTC4A = p-phenylthiacalix[4]arene), were synthesized by the solvothermal method in the mixed CH3OH/CHCl3 (1: 1) solvent and reassembled in air at room temperature to two other structures, [(Cu4Cl3)-Cl-II(HCO2)(TC4A)(CH3-OH)(2)(H2O)](CHCl3)(CH3OH)(2.7) (3) and [(Cu4Cl4)-Cl-II(PTC4A)(CH3OH)(4)] (4), respectively. All these four compounds were characterized by TG analyses, FTIR spectroscopy, and singlecrystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Compounds 1 and 2 feature two-dimensional layered networks, while compounds 3 and 4 are assembled by some tetranuclear units. Abstract:Three novel [2]catenanes in which four or eight fluorine atoms are incorporated into one or two of the phenylene linkers of the tetracationic cyclophanes have been synthesized based on the donor–acceptor interaction principle between the hydroquinone and dipyridinium subunits. Although the introduction of fluorine atoms markedly reduces the assembling efficiency of the [2]catenanes, the existence of fluorine atoms substantially increases the donor–acceptor interaction between the hydroquinone and bipyridiniums of the corresponding [2]catenanes. Two novel fluorine-containing tetracationic cyclophanes have also been synthesized.
