Abstract:This paper describes the self-assembly of a new class of three-component dynamic [2]catenanes, which are driven or stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding, coordination, and electrostatic interaction. One of the component molecules 2, consisting of an aromatic oligoamide spacer and two peripheral zinc porphyrin units, was designed to adopt a folded preorganized conformation, which is stabilized by consecutive intramolecular three-centered hydrogen bonds. Component molecule 3 is a linear secondary ammonium bearing two peripheral pyridine units, which was designed to form a 1:1 complex with 24-crown-8 (5). The 1H NMR and UV−vis experiments in CDCl3−CD3CN (4:1 v/v) revealed that, due to the preorganized U-shaped feature, 2 could efficiently bind 3 through the cooperative zinc−pyridine coordination to generate highly stable 1:1 complex 2·3. Adding 5 to the 1:1 solution of 2 and 3 led to the formation of dynamic three-component [2]catenane 2·3·5 as a result of the threading of 3 through 5. 1H NMR studies indicated that in the 1:1:1 solution (3 mM) [2]catenane 2·3·5 was generated in 55% yield at 25 °C. The yield was increased with the reduction of the temperature and [2]catenane could be produced quantitatively in a 1:1:2 solution ([2] = 3 mM) at −13 °C. Replacing 3 with 1,2-bis(4,4‘-bipyridinium)ethane (4) in the three-component solution could also give rise to similar dynamic [2]catenane 2·4·5 albeit in slightly lower yield.

Abstract:Self-assembly by means of coordinative bond formation has opened up opportunities for the high-yield synthesis of molecules with complex topologies. However, the preparation of purely covalent molecular architectures in aqueous media has remained a challenging task. Here, we present the preparation of a three-dimensional catenane through a self-assembly process that relies on the formation of dynamic hydrazone linkages in an acidic aqueous medium. The quantitative synthesis process and the mechanically interlocked structure of the resulting catenane were established by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray crystallography and HPLC studies. In addition, the labile hydrazone linkages of the individual [2]catenane components may be ‘locked’ by increasing the pH of the solution, yielding a relatively kinetically stable molecule. The present study thus details a simple approach to the creation and control of complex molecular architectures under reaction conditions that mimic biological milieux.

Abstract:Although catenated cages have been widely constructed due to their unique and elegant topological structures, cyclic catenanes formed by the connection of multiple catenane units have been rarely reported. Herein, based on the orthogonal metal-coordination-driven self-assembly, we prepare a series of heterometallic [2]catenanes and cyclic bis[2]catenanes, whose structures are clearly evidenced by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Owing to the multiple positively charged nature, as well as the potential synergistic effect of the Cu(I) and Pt(II) metal ions, the cyclic bis[2]catenanes display broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. This work not only provides an efficient strategy for the construction of heterometallic [2]catenanes and cyclic bis[2]catenanes but also explores their applications as superior antibacterial agents, which will promote the construction of advanced supramolecular structures for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Novel dynamic [2]catenanes interlocked by the quadruple hydrogen bonding ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) motif have been developed. The dynamic catenation process was due to the selective cyclization of bifunctional UPy molecules over a wide concentration range with the assistance of the cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) (CBPQT(4+)) macrocycle. The self-assembled [2] catenanes were stabilized by a combination of different non-covalent interactions comprising quadruple hydrogen bonding and host-guest interactions. This type of non-covalent bonded catenane is the first one interlocked by multiple hydrogen bonding interactions instead of metal-ligand interactions.

Abstract:Poly[n]catenanes have exceptional mechanical bonding properties that give them tremendous potential for use in the development of molecular machines and soft materials. Synthesizing these compounds has, however, proven to be a formidable challenge. Herein, we describe a concise method for the construction of twisted polycatenanes. Our approach involves using preorganized double helicates as templates, linked crosswise in a linear fashion by either silver ions or triple bonds. By using this approach, we successfully synthesized twisted polycatenanes with both coordination and covalent bonding employing Ag(I) ions and ethynylene units, respectively, as the linkages and leveraging the same Ag(I)-templated double helicate in both cases. Synthesis with Ag(I) ions formed a single-crystalline one-dimensional (1D) coordination poly[n]catenane, and synthesis using ethynylene units generated 1D fibers which self-assembled with solvents to form a gel. Our results confirm the potential of multi-stranded metallohelicates for creating sophisticated mechanically interlocked molecules and polymers, which could pave the way for exploration in the realms of molecular nanotopology and materials design.

Abstract:One linear template 13 and one cyclophane template 15, both incorporating two electron rich 1, 4-dialkoxybenzene units and one diamide unit, have been synthesized. By utilizing donor-acceptor interaction and/or intermolecular hydrogen bonding assembling principles, one novel hetero[3]rotaxane 22-40, possessing one neutral and one tetracationic ring components, has been synthesized from 13, through neutral [2]rotaxane 21 as intermediate. With 15 as template, tetracationic [2]catenane 23 .4PF(6) was assembled by using donor-acceptor interaction, but no neutral [2]rotaxane could he obtained under the typical conditions of hydrogen bonding assembling principle. The interlocked supramolecular compounds have been characterized and their spectral properties are investigated.

Abstract:Although the synthesis of mechanically interlocked molecules has been extensively researched, selectively constructing homogeneous linear [4]catenanes remains a formidable challenge. Here, we selectively constructed a homogeneous linear metalla[4]catenane in a one-step process through the coordination-driven self-assembly of a bidentate benzothiadiazole derivative ligand and a binuclear half-sandwich rhodium precursor. The formation of metalla[4]catenanes was facilitated by cooperative interactions between strong sandwich-type π-π stacking and non-classical hydrogen bonds between the components. Moreover, by modulating the aromatic substituents on the binuclear precursor, two homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes were obtained. The molecular structures of these metallacatenanes were unambiguously characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Additionally, reversible structural transformation between metal-catenanes and the corresponding metallarectangles could be achieved by altering their concentration, as confirmed by mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy studies.

Abstract:A variety of novel calix[4]arene-incorporating crown ethers with or without intramolecular hydrogen bonding have been prepared by two efficient methods and utilized as donor rings to assemble calix[4]arene [2]catenanes based on n-stacking interaction between hydroquinone and bipyridinium units. Treatment of calix[4]arene crown ethers 4, 10a, or 10b, whose cone conformation was fixed by intramolecular hydrogen bonding within the calix[4]arene moiety, with dicationic salt 15.2PF(6) and dibromide 16 afforded the corresponding [2]catenanes 17a.4PF(6), 17b.4PF(6), and 17c.4PF(6) in 20%, 53%, and 55% yields, respectively, whereas from the reactions of 15.2PF(6) and dibromide 16 in the presence of conformationally flexible 11 or 12 with a cone conformation kept by two propyl groups, [2]catenanes 18.4PF(6) and 19.4PF(6) were obtained in 12% and 6% yields. [2]Catenanes 21a.4C, 21b.4Cl, and 21c.4Cl, incorporating calix[4]arene in both the donor and acceptor rings, were also successfully assembled from 10a or 10b, 16, and dicationic salts 20a.2PF(6) or 20b.2PF(6). The dynamic H-1 NMR and absorption spectra of the [2]catenanes have been investigated, which revealed a strongest donor-acceptor interaction in 17a.4PF(6) and that the cone [2]catenanes 17a.4Cl can isomerize to the partial cone isomer at high temperature. The difference of the dynamic properties of these catenanes was discussed. The results demonstrate that catenation is one new general method to change the conformational distributions of calix[4]arenes.

Abstract:Although the synthetic chemistry leading to interlocking molecular [ n ]catenanes of organic polyhedra ( n = 2–3) and rings ( n = 2–130) is established, the analogous chemistry that pertains to infinite three-dimensional systems ([ ∞ ]catenane) remains undeveloped. We report a series of [ ∞ ]catenane covalent organic frameworks (termed catena-COFs). These were synthesized by linking 4,4′-(1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-diyl)dibenzaldehyde to either of tris-(4-aminophenyl)-amine, -methane or -methanol through imine condensation. These combinations give discrete adamantane-like polyhedra, catenated by virtue of the copper(I) ions templating a mutually embracing arrangement of PDBs (points-of-catenation), which ultimately results in infinite catena-COF-805, 806 and 807. The crystal structures of these COFs obtained from electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were determined to be isoreticular and to adopt the bor-y structure type.

Abstract:Abstract The study of cross-catenated metallacages, which are complex self-assembly systems arising from multiple supramolecular interactions and hierarchical assembly processes, is currently lacking but could provide facile insights into achieving more precise control over low-symmetry/high-complexity hierarchical assembly systems. Here, we report a cross-catenane formed between two position-isomeric Pt(II) metallacages in the solid state. These two metallacages formed [2]catenanes in solution, whereas a 1:1 mixture selectively formed a cross-catenane in crystals. Varied temperature nuclear magnetic resonance experiments and time-of-flight mass spectra are employed to characterize the cross-catenation in solutions, and the dynamic library of [2]catenanes are shown. Additionally, we searched for the global-minimum structures of three [2]catenanes and re-optimized the low-lying structures using density functional theory calculations. Our results suggest that the binding energy of cross-catenanes is significantly larger than that of self-catenanes within the dynamic library, and the selectivity in crystallization of cross-catenanes is thermodynamic. This study presents a cross-catenated assembly from different metallacages, which may provide a facile insight for the development of low-symmetry/high-complexity self-assemble systems.

Abstract:The hierarchical self-assembly (HSA) strategy widely utilized in biological systems has been applied in artificial systems to orchestrate small building blocks into complex functional architectures. The non-interfering interactions glue various building blocks together and produce new species with attractive properties. Herein, we functionalized NHC-based assemblies with orthogonal host-guest interaction to fabricate metal-carbene based supramolecular polymer gel. A series of unique crown ether-appended cylinder-like trinuclear AuI hexacarbene assemblies [Au3(L)2](PF6)3 (L=D1–D4, A1–A4) were synthesized from the corresponding trisimidazolium salts H3-L(PF6)3 (L=D1–D4, A1–A4) in which the N-wingtip of the imidazole moieties were substituted with three identical crown ether groups of different sizes (B15C5, B18C6, B21C7, DB24C8). The gold carbene assembly is able to complex six ammonium salts without disrupting the underlying metal-carbene cylinders. In addition, the supramolecular polymer metallogel featuring a multiple-responsiveness can be formed by using [Au3(A4)2](PF6)3 appended with DB24C8 as the core and bisammonium salt as the cross-linker. The case of introducing orthogonal interaction to NHC moiety by N-wingtip substitution demonstrates the feasibility and the power of such strategy to expand the NHC-based supramolecular system and endow them with novel properties.
Self-Assembling Calix[4]Arene [2]catenanes. Preorganization, Conformation, Selectivity, and Efficiency

Abstract:A novel class of preorganized U-shape calix[4]arene clefts, dicationic salts 3a,c,e.2Cl, 3b.2PF(6)(), and 3f.2Br, consisting of one cone calix[4]arene and two bipyridine residues being linked by an aliphatic chain, have been designed and synthesized as precursors for self-assembly of calix[4]arene [2]catenanes by utilizing pi-stacking interactions between the hydroquinone and bipyridinium units. Conformationally flexible 6.2PF(6)() and cone 10.2Cl, whose conformation is fixed by two propyloxy groups on the lower rim, were also prepared in order to explore the effects of conformation and hydrogen bonding of the calix[4]arene moiety on self-assembly. For all reactions, bis-p-phenylene-34-crown ether-10 (11) was employed as the donor component. Alternate cone [2]catenane 13.4Cl is obtained in 8% yield from reaction of ethylene-incorporating 3a.2Cl and 1,4-bis(bromomethyl)benzene (12a). Three cone and one conformationally flexible [2]catenanes were obtained in moderate to good yields from reactions of propylene-incorporating 3b.PF(6)() and 3c.2Cl with 12a, 1,3-bis(bromomethyl)benzene (12b) or 4,4'-(bromomethyl)biphenyl (12c). Both cone and partial cone [2]catenanes were generated in moderate yields from butylene-incorporating 3c.2Cl with four tert-butyl groups on the calix[4]arene moiety and with 12a. In contrast, only cone [2]catenane was obtained from similar tert-butyl-free cleft 3d.2Cl. Cone and conformationally flexible [2]catenanes were obtained in moderate yields, respectively, from the reactions of 3d.2Cl and 3e.2Cl with 12c. No catenanes were isolated from reaction of phenylene-incorporating 3f.2Br or 6.2Cl, whereas reaction of 10.2Cl afforded cone [2]catenane in low yield. It was demonstrated that hydrogen bonding, which may be destroyed after catenation, within the calix[4]arene moiety is crucial for efficient self-assembly of the [2]catenanes. The dynamic (1)H NMR and absorption spectra and luminescent properties of the [2]catenanes were investigated, which reveal that incorporation of calix[4]arene into the tetracationic cyclophane reduces pi-stacking interactions between the donor and acceptor units and catenation has substantial influence on conformational distributions of the calix[4]arene moiety. The results demonstrate the versatility of calix[4]arene derivatives as building blocks in the construction of supramolecular structures.
Densely Charged Dodecacationic [3]- and Tetracosacationic Radial [5]Catenanes

Abstract:Here, we report the efficient syntheses of a dodecacationic [3]catenane, which consists of three mechanically interlocked 4+ charged rings despite their mutual Coulombic repulsion, and a tetracosacationic radial [5]catenane, which consists of four 4+ charged rings mechanically interlocked around an 8+ charged ring and bears up to 24 positive charges in its co-constitution. The solid-state structures, determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, show that the two mechanical bonds in the [3]catenane result in the nano-confinement of 12 positive charges within a volume of less than 1.65 nm3, corresponding to 7.3 positive charges per nm3, whereas the radial [5]catenane has a charge density of 6.0 positive charges per nm3 and a molecular length of up to 3.7 nm. The template-directed strategy for constructing mechanically interlocked molecules, consisting of multiply charged rings, represents a departure in chemistry tantamount to producing a blueprint for exploring a novel class of organic molecules that boast large numbers and high densities of like charges.

Abstract:One fascinating and challenging synthetic target in the field of mechanically interlocked molecules is the family of linear [4]catenanes, which are topologically identical to the logo of automobile maker Audi. Herein, we report an "all-in-one" synthetic strategy for the synthesis of linear metalla[n]catenanes (n = 2–4) by the coordination-driven self-assembly of Cp*Rh-based (Cp* = η5-pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) organometallic rectangle π-donors and tetracationic organic cyclophane π-acceptors. We selected the pyrenyl group as the π-donor unit, leading to homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes and cyclic metalla[3]catenanes via π-stacking interactions. By taking advantage of the strong electrostatic interactions between π-donor units and π-acceptor units, a heterogeneous metalla[2]catenanes and linear metalla[3]catenanes, respectively, could be obtained by the simple stirring of homogeneous metalla[2]catenanes with a suitable tetracationic cyclophane. On this basis, this "all-in-one" synthetic strategy was further used to realize a quantitative one-step synthesis of a linear metalla[4]catenanes via the self-assembly of cyclic metalla[3]catenanes and tetracationic cyclophanes. Abstract:The formation of catenated systems can be simplified greatly if one or more rings are generated via self-assembly. Herein we exploit the orthogonality of coordination-driven self-assembly and crown-ether host-guest complexation to obtain a [4]molecular necklace and a [7]molecular necklace based on a well-developed recognition motif of 1,2-bis(pyridinium)ethane/dibenzo[24]crown-8. By adapting the bis(pyridinium) motif into the backbone of a donor building block, the resulting semirigid dipyridyl species can serve both as a structural element in the formation of metallacycles and as a site for subsequent host-guest chemistry. The pseudolinear nature of the donor precursor lends itself to the formation of triangular and hexagonal central metallacycles based on the complementary acceptor unit used. This exemplary system organizes up to 18 molecules from three unique species in solution to afford a single supramolecular ensemble.

Abstract:We report novel supramolecular architectures based on flexible benzene-1,3,5-triacetic acid (bta) through strong hydrogen bonds. Partial deprotonated triacid forms a novel one-dimensional (1D) polycatenated chain (NH4)(15)[1,3,5-C6H3(CH2COOH)(15)(CH2COO)(15)] (1). While In the case of compound bta.H2O (2) with non-deprotonated triacid, a three-dimensional (3D) interpenetrated network was self-organized by strong O-H. .O hydrogen bonds. The conformation of flexible triacid is cis, cis, cis in 1 and cis, trans, trans in 2.

Abstract:Main observation and conclusionThe construction of interlocked topologies by metal‐cation‐template methods has been extensively explored. However, construction of these species using template‐free chemical self‐assembly methods is hard to rationally achieve due to the inherent unpredictability of self‐assembly processes. In this work, a strategy to construct interlocked [2]catenanes by coordination‐driven template‐free self‐assembly is demonstrated, whereby combining rigid bidentate ligands with large conjugated‐π area units and building blocks with appropriate lengths facilitated construction of interlocked [2]catenane compounds. Two rigid bidentate ligands, L1 and L2, were chosen to self‐assemble with three dinuclear building blocks B1, B2 and B3. Ultimately, the successful construction of three [2]catenanes demonstrated the validity of the strategy. Although [2]catenanes are the simplest of all interlocked topologies, this motif is the basis for constructing more intricate topologies. This successful strategy may therefore lead to construction of other, more intricate topologies in the future.
