Abstract:Polymer Chemistry Experiment course is a key subject to cultivate students in polymeric discipline. This paper deals with the ways of teaching reform of Polymer Chemistry Experiment course, including how to motivate students＇ learning interest and innovative ability, how to develop comprehensive experiment course, how to incorporate experiment course with research works, and how to improve evaluation systems. The aim of the reformation is to cultivate and enhance the students＇ ability of practice and innovation, as well as the comprehensive characters.

Abstract:Chemical product engineering represents an emerging discipline rooted to chemical engineering. Its core content of research lies in precision production of chemical structures. Polymer products contain complex structures at multiple scales. Polymerization processes, to a large extent, determine polymer chain microstructures and morphologies. In the recent years, we developed various polymerization processes and produced polymers having precisely designed chain microstructures. These polymer products showed high performances and superior material properties in targeted applications. Our methodology employs kinetic modeling combined with reactor technologies, based on extensive mechanistic research on polymerization mechanisms. In controlled/living radical(co)polymeri-zation, we developed a novel model-based computer-programed semi-batch copolymerization technology that allows unprecedented precise control over end-to-end copolymer composition of individual chains. In catalytic polymerization of olefins, we developed a reactor technology for in-situ production of polyolefin alloys. This paper provides a brief summary of the recent advances in the polymer product engineering researches.

Abstract:Lab course of polymer chemistry in science faculties is not updated enough because that polymer sci-ence developed so much since last 90ˊs. It deserves more attention to develop a polymer chemical lab course referred to more novel polymerization techniques and characterization methods. A wholly new designed course, lab of contem-porary polymer chemistry, introduced in this article focuses on the training of some important but newly developed techniques and ideas in polymer science. It proves to be feasible and helpful in improving the research quality and scientific interest of students in science faculties, and builds a new way for the development of the lab course of poly-mer chemistry suitable for the education of creative research students.

Abstract:On the basis of detailed analysis for teaching content,teaching methods,experimental and practical system,and assessable standard,the current situation of teaching of polymer processing course was investigated.The simple pattern of academic teaching was not enough to improve the overall quality of students in polymer specialty.It was obvious that comprehensive experimental system and diversified examination displayed absent in current teaching process.The principle of practical reform in educational system for polymer processing course was that students were cultivated the capacity of acquiring and applying knowledge.The practical problem during production and the cuspidate achievement in scientific research were introduced into the teaching contents of polymer processing course.Previous simple theoretical teaching was changed to incorporation of theoretical and practical teaching.The assessable standard for students,including daily exercise,research proposal,oral statement,experimental manipulation and examination,displayed more diversified.It was one of the highlights that a comprehensive experimental and practical system was added as the important parts of practical reform,which benefitted to enhancing the professional comprehensive quality of students.They were required to master the theoretical foundation of the polymer processing course,at the same time,have the manipulative ability.It was the basic requirement for students to analyze polymer properties,choose processing condition,and prepare polymer product by suitable processing methods.

Abstract:With the bloom of modern education concepts,a wide-ranging and deep-going revolution of teaching methods,mindsets and organizational form of study is in progress,which plays against the rigescent tradition in experimental teaching brought by the long-term exam-oriented education.Under this condition,it is quite necessary to confirm the flexible teaching principle focused on comprehensive ability,critical thinking and versatile cultivating modes,based on which we can motivate the professional interests and innovative inspiration of the students in experiments of polymer chemistry.With these concepts,we constructed the multi-level curriculum system,reconnecting the teaching units according to the correlation,and expanded the fundamental experiments with more exploration capability.In our experimental teaching practice,all the students were encouraged to adopt the spirits of question and challenge as the dominant roles.Furthermore,the ideas of engineering ethics and professional ethics were also introduced to fertilize the earth of cultivating the leaders,innovator and constructors of the future.

Abstract:In order to cultivate and stimulate students' interest in polymer science and technology,Zhejiang University from 2004 began to hold “Modern history of polymer” elective courses to undergraduate students of polymer materials.By allowing students to understand the process of the establishment of polymer science,understanding of the establishment and development of polymer industry,a comprehensive understanding of polymer science and discipline knowledge,structural understanding was expected to be established in students.Along two important indexes including the development of polymer science and technology in China and in the world,the emergence of the famous polymer scientists,the production of a variety of historical significance of polymer materials and experimental technology were introduced for the students to show the development of polymer science and technology surge high and sweep forward in history.After more than and 10 years of trial and effort,the course has formed its own teaching features in the teaching content,teaching methods and assessment methods,and played a positive role in stimulating and cultivating undergraduate students' interest and enthusiasm for polymers.

Abstract:In 2013,Zhejiang University has launched the graduate English course that would be fully taught by foreign teacher.Taking this opportunity,the Department of Polymer Science and Engineering has invited Prof.M.Grunze from Heidelberg University,Germany,to teach "Interface Science of Polymer".The aim of English course program is to improve student professional knowledge and communication skill in English,as well as to train young teacher.The program has been carried out for 3 years,and the teaching content,arrangement of class,student feeling,and learning experience are summarized.Furthermore,based on Chinese student characteristics,we have suggested several ideas and opinions for teaching and class management.

Abstract:Experiment teaching is an important approach to training students' basic scientific skills and cultivating their creative ability. The authors have carried out a teaching reform in biotechnological experiment course by establishing the modular course system through many years' exploration and practice.They have constructed clear theoretical knowledge and experimental operation frame which enable students to realize the position and function of every independent experiment. Abstract:The educational practice on the combination of multi-experiments in polymer physics is described in this paper.In the teaching of experiments of polymer physics,the separate experiments were combined and connected each other.A hypothetical problem was presented and needed to be solved by the combination of several experiments.The students were required to share the experimental results by team-work.The evaluation of teaching effects indicated that,compared to the traditional teaching method,the combinatorial teaching were paid more enthusiasms by the students.The combination of multi-experiments was advantageous to understand well not only the isolated knowledge point,but also the relevance of different knowledge points.The students' scores in this course were graded comprehensively based on course preparation,personal experiment report,team-work report and semester examination.This new teaching method was successfully carried out and approved by most students.

Abstract:The IUPAC Subcommittee on Polymer Education has been pursuing the development of a compact syllabus covering the essential topics required for a tertiary education in polymer science, with numerical and short answer exercises addressing each topic. The primary goal of the document is to provide a framework for a complete course made freely available worldwide so that any educator can implement a professionally-curated course in polymer science for their students without needing expensive textbooks or reliable internet access. An important secondary goal is to popularize the use of approved IUPAC terminology in polymer science by using it consistently throughout the document and providing references to IUPAC source documents. Professor Melissa Chin Han Chan was an active and enthusiastic participant in the project who played a significant role in its design and implementation. The late Professor Richard 'Dick' Jones also had a keen interest in the project and had a great influence on its direction and structure. This brief note is dedicated to these two illustrious polymer scientists.

Abstract:This paper introduces the author's teaching experience on the teaching reform of the course of Polymer Materials (Research Methods in Materials Sciences).The authors put the idea of "Flipped-Classroom" into the teaching process,encourage the students to collect,organize and understand the information of research frontiers of polymer materials,and allow them to introduce their findings and comprehension.Then,the students and the authors discuss further about the research frontiers.This process stimulates the students' interest in learning,and thus results in a good teaching effect.

Abstract:Polymer science is receiving wider acceptance in the organic chemistry community; thus, it is imperative to include it in the undergraduate organic chemistry curriculum. Despite the ever-increasing popularity of the topic of polymer chemistry in undergraduate curricula, a comprehensive laboratory experiment module describing a polypeptide synthesis by ring-opening polymerization of N-carboxyanhydride (NCA ROP) and a homopolymer synthesis by activators-regenerated by electron-transfer for atom transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP) has yet to be proposed. Herein, we report a semester-long, ten week undergraduate laboratory module focusing on the synthesis and analytical characterization of polyalanine and polystyrene for an advanced organic chemistry class. Students received hands-on-experiences in synthesizing polymers followed by their characterization via proton nuclear magnetic resonance (<sup>1</sup>H NMR) spectroscopy, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetry (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which are not well-presented in the typical organic chemistry curricula. These engaging hands-on lessons in the newly designed laboratory module not only increase students' interests in an interdisciplinary environment of organic chemistry and polymer science but also cultivate their research interests and communication skills and promote critical thinking.
