Abstract:The history of the reception of American literature in China may well be one of the most exemplary instances of the contingent and context-bound quality of literary judgment, particularly when it involves cross-cultural negotiations of value and significance. A cursory glance at any research library's catalog in China would suggest Chinese perception of American literature is possibly the most amply documented literary sensibility in today's Chinese scholarship on foreign literature. Each major American author's reception in China would require a booklength study. Here I will start from a brief survey of Chinese scholarship on American literature and try to explain how American literature has been observed through three case studies. Abstract:There are works that are continuously loved regardless of the time. This goes beyond generations and nationality. It is also the subject of continuous research by scholars. In particular, in the case of literary works, symbolic events or ideas representing the era are revealed, and readers who encounter the work think and influence it. In this paper, we looked at the research trends of L'Étranger in China with the aim of examining how French author Albert Camus' novel The Stranger is accepted and studied by scholars in China, a communist country, and further influences it. In general, Chinese research is mainly focused on research on the translation of The Stranger and papers that study the implications of works such as existentialism, irrationality, rebellion, and outsiders. However, the study was conducted by viewing L'Étranger as simply one of the numerous literary works and a novel from a country called France, and it is interpreted only by substituting the situation in France at the time. L'Étranger, the representative work about irrational philosophy, is included in high school textbook as a very important work. This research examines how this work has been studied in China, as an Asain country such as Korea and Japan, but with a large cultural difference within the country. Through this research, it provides an opportunity to examine how a specific literary work can be accepted across borders.

Abstract:Since its publication in 2008,The Song of Everlasting Sorrow,the translation of Wang Anyi's novel,has received various reports and criticism in mainstream West.A research into the process of its translation and the picture of its reception helps us know why and how Chinese literature have a unique appeal to the West.And it helps us see clearly how English readers,guided by western-orientated paradigms,recognize and understand Chinese literature,and especially how ideology and cultural values influence the way of reception.The case study provides a good reference to the translation and reception of Chinese modern literature and culture in the West.

Abstract:The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a unique American children’s novel. Since its first Chinese translation by Zhang Duo-sheng in 1942, various Chinese versions have been emerging. Based on the reception aesthetics theory, this paper first analyzes Chinese translations of the novel in different historical periods of China, then discusses its reception among both the professional readers and the ordinary readers in China by sorting out the professional book reviews published on China professional academic databases and the general book reviews published on general websites, and finally summarizes its mode of translation and reception in China and its implications for the “going out” of Chinese children’s literature.

Abstract:In China, Professor Lawrence Buell's scholarship is astounding, often regarded as one of America's major voices on environmental criticism, having drawn a global attention. He has been hailed as the prime representative of ecocriticism whose sensitivity and clarity of perception are truly commendable. Of particular note is his The Future of Environmental Criticism: Environmental Crisis and Literary Imagination. A leading practitioner in the field, Buell reveals how his own work has been influenced by the key debates and identifies the challenges for us all, writer's and readers, local neighbors and global species, in facing the future our literary culture mediates and influences. Nearly all Chinese scholars interested in ecocritical studies have turned to Buell for inspiration. This paper purports to show how his wonderful scholarship, benevolence, spiritual support as well as advisory expertise have nourished a group of Chinese ecocritics.

Abstract:In 1995, Walter Harding turned out an article titled “Thoreau’s Reputation” trying to render a picture of how Thoreau had been perceived in a world other than the United States. He mentioned in particular the translation of the writer into different languages such as German, Dutch, Russian, Japanese, French, Czechoslovakian and Italian and he specifically dwelled on the Japanese reception of Thoreau and his works, without a single word about the abundance of Chinese scholarship on the same writer. This essay begins with a critical survey of how Thoreau has been perceived in China. It argues that there are tentatively three different stages as regards the Chinese projections of Thoreau in terms of issues raised and handled. The first stage roughly from the 1920s to 1949 marks China’s burgeoning interest in the American writer featured by a passion for Western literature as both cultural and intellectual nourishment. The second is mainly a period of ideological appraisals from 1949 to 1977 in which Thoreau is regarded as a champion of democracy and a critic of American capitalist civilization. The third one is known as the multiple approach period from 1978 onwards in which Thoreau studies has flourished and continues to grow in China. Focused discussions have revealed the following: (1) comparative approaches have been made into the Chinese elements in the formation of Thoreau’s notion of civilization and views of Nature; (2) critical attention has been drawn on Thoreau’s political thought and ecological awareness, rendering a multitude of interpretations both textually and theoretically; and (3) further discussions focus primarily on Thoreau’s personal conduct raising a question of how to appraise Thoreau’s withdrawal from society and giving rise to an ambiguous identity of Thoreau. Intertwined in my discussion is a further exploration of Walden ’s influence in China and how Thoreau is integrated in contemporary Chinese writing at this age of ecological awareness.

Abstract:The subject of this work is the main themes and ideas of Russian country prose – the school that most fully reflects the essence of the Russian national mentality. Ethical issues are an integral part of the works of Vasily Shukshin. V. Shukshin’s novellas represent the wisdom, virtue and life experience of a Russian villager, an attempt is made to identify the spiritual foundations. Writers strive to find the foundations of the peasant world. Vasily Shukshin’s works are known not only in Russia, but all over the world. At the end of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, V. Shukshin’s novellas were also translated into Chinese and had a significant impact on the work of modern Chinese fiction writers of the new era. During the period of social transformations in China and the Soviet Union, a large number of peasants left the village and rushed to the cities, while their lands were abandoned, and the very attitude of man to the land changed. These processes could not but disturb the writers of the two countries, reflecting in their works on the relationship between man and nature, on national historical memory, on the connection between tradition and modernity. Thus, the question of studying the reception of V. Shukshin’s creativity in China seems to be very up-to-date. The historical and biographical methods provide a key to understanding the author’s content of such national Russian concepts as ‘home’, ‘melancholy’, ‘soul’, ‘conscience’, ‘fate’ and demonstrate the views of Chinese literary scholars on the oeuvre of Russian writers of this school. The works of Chinese literary critics are introduced into the scientific circulation.

Abstract:Chinese scholars just began to study Arabic literature since Reform and Opening-up of China in 1979, though Arabic language began to be taught in Peking University since 1951. Chinese scholars' studies on Arabic literature studies at that time were at the edge of studies of world literature. Articles on Arabic literature just issued on Arab World. It was still difficult for professors of Arabic literature to issue their articles at the journals such as Foreign Literature Review, Literature Abroad, Foreign Literature Studies, Foreign Literature and Contemporary Foreign Literature in 1980s. These journals preferred to issue papers on western literature and Russian literature during that period. In recent years, studies on Arabic literature developed rapidly in China. The Chinese intellectuals do not study on ancient Arabic literature only, but study on modern and contemporary Arabic literature also. They published books on Arabic literature such as On Arabian Nights: Mythology and Reality , Singing for Love: A Study on Kuwait Poetess Souad al-Sabah , Sufism in Modern Arabic Literature , Modern Arabic Literature During the Cultural Changes , Arabic Poetry in the Context of Globalization: A Study on Egyptian Poet Farouk Guweidah, and Comparative Study of Chinese and Arabic Literature. They also wrote histories of Arabic literature, for example, History of Arabic Literature, History of Modern Arabic Literature and General History of Arabic Literature are available in Chinese book market in these years. Professor Zhong Jikun won Appreciation Award of Egypt Ministry of Higher Education in 2005, won Sheikh Zayed Book Award's Cultural Personality of the Year in 2011 and in the same year won King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Translation. These prizes and awards show us that studies on Arabic literature have moved from the edge of China to the center of Arab world.

Abstract:In recent decade,the research on overseas Chinese classics has become a new trend in the international sinology.There are profound internal and external reasons to this trend,and the formation of the trend is realized by newly- found materials which call for a new theoretical proposition and a new method of thinking. The"novelty"about the trend shows in the close-reading of new materials and the reflection of academic position of sinology,and these practices may be expected to initiate a new departure for the Chinese scholarship in the 21th century. In brief,the research paradigm will shift from"the Western dame"to"the Eastern daughter. "This paper focuses on the relationship between the Chinese literature and East Asian civilizations,and proposes five areas of research which may benefit from overseas classical texts in Chinese language. It describes the potential space for exploration of the classical Chinese research and argues for the"necessary tension"between facts and theory.

Abstract:In their article "A Survey of Twentieth-century Literary Theory and Criticism in Chinese" Xiaoming Chen and Anfeng Sheng survey Chinese-language scholarship that for the reason of the East-West divide is less known in the West. Although heavily influenced by both Western and Soviet Marxist thought, twentieth-century Chinese literary theorization and criticism produced much incisive scholarship based on the vast knowledge existing in Chinese culture and literary scholarship. Chen and Sheng survey pioneering works by numerous Chinese literary theorists and critics who have been influential in their own time and exerted persistent modeling influences until today and the article is meant to adjust the anonymous position of Chinese literary theorization in the West and thus to contribute to the diversity of literary studies.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the work of Han Song, an important contemporary Chinese sf writer. His dark and difficult stories brim with violence and bloodshed and frequently leave readers puzzled as to his intentions, yet many critics have defended the value of his work. My analysis focuses on the reasons for the persistence of such dark images of China in his writing. Han Song's work exceeds Lu Xun's critique of national character and makes him an inheritor of the enlightenment spirit of the May 4th Movement (1915-1921). At the same time, the impact of Buddhism imbues his work with a nihilism that inevitably dilutes the power of his critique. Paradoxical feelings of detachment from and attachment to reality find voice in his sf writing, which ought to be viewed as the practice of dharma as well as a critique of reality. In other words, his "Gloomy China" should be seen not only as a national allegory in Fredric Jameson's sense of the term, but also as a universal exploration of the meaning of existence.
