Abstract:ABSTRACT Shakespeare’s sonnets are widely loved and very popular in China, and major poet-translators such as Tu An and Liang Zongdai devoted a lifetime to their task of translation. The translation of the Bard’s sonnets involves cross-cultural understanding. In terms of poetic style, Shakespeare’s sonnets may be rendered in two styles, either modern or classical. Both styles have their pros and cons, but the general tendency leans toward the modern. In the course of over a century, the sonnet form has successfully been indigenized, and the Chinese sonnet has largely been developed from the reading and transplantation of Western sonneteers including Shakespeare and Milton. Among others, Shakespeare has exerted a significant impact on modern Chinese poetry by contributing new content and new form. This article aims to survey the reading, translation, and rewriting of Shakespeare’s sonnets in China and demonstrate how the Bard’s sonnets influenced the scene of modern Chinese poetry.

Abstract:The article first expounds the profound influence of Shakespeare’s plays and the significance of translating them into Chinese. Then it introduces Zhu Shenghao’s achievements and the origin and connotation of his “Red Boat Spirit”. The three aspects of the “Red Boat Spirit”, namely the pioneering spirit, the fighting spirit and the dedication spirit were found to match perfectly with what Zhu Shenghao displayed during his translation of Shakespeare’s plays. Thereafter, the article illustrates the significance of setting up Zhu Shenghao as a moral example for contemporary college students before a final description of the concrete operation of integrating Zhu Shenghao into the education of college students’ “Red Boat Spirit”.

Abstract:Shakespeare and his works began making their way to Asia through diplomatic and missionary channels some two centuries after the Bard’s death. Through translations and adaptations, Asian countries began to learn about his works and what they represent (culture, lifestyle, ideology), and such activities soon began to interact with local cultures and practices of musical performances: Chinese operatic Shakespeare, Japanese Nō Shakespeare, Korean shamanistic Shakespeare, to name but a few. With a focus on Shakespeare in China, this chapter begins with a summary of the history of Chinese perceptions, responses, and (re)creations of Shakespeare. The introductory overview serves as a socio-historical context for a discussion of mass-market musical responses to Shakespeare and his works in contemporary China. The author investigates how popular musical forms and modes, in particular Mandopop and Cantopop, have embraced and given new shape and voice to Shakespearean works.

Abstract:The two new 21st-century Chinese re-translations of Shakespeare’s Hamlet , one by Hongyin Wang and the other by Guobin Huang, represent continued efforts by Chinese scholars in studying and translating Shakespeare. Compared with those previous translations, these two have realized fresh achievements in such aspects as use of language with characteristics of the times, employment of new para-textual elements, visual arrangement of verse lines, and new treatment of those literary devices in the original work which usually constitute a major challenge to translators of them. And based on the latest academic research achievements with regard to Hamlet, either of them incorporates its translator’s own research findings. The two translations also show some different features. Their main differences lie in that Wang, who translates mainly for the reader, is more concerned with the overall artistic effect by giving full play to the literary and expressive force of Chinese in characterization and uses naturally used Chinese language in characterization. Also, he lifts his translation in a philosophical connotation and a literary conception. Huang’s version, far more annotated, is rendered for the stage and pays much attention to rhythm-rhyming scheme and image correspondence by concise and accurate Chinese, blending elegant and vulgar features according to the characters’ identity. The two translators have made new contribution to the international Shakespeare studies in general and Hamlet studies in particular.

Abstract:Taking sixteen Shakespearean adaptations by eight playwrights as the object of study, Chen Hongwei's book Shakespeare in the Post-war English Drama ( published by Peking University Press in April, 2019) carries forth an analysis of the forms of Shakespeare's presence in the Post-War English drama from the aspect of contemporary adaptation theories. In Methodology, the research is an interdisciplinary study which covers drama study, culture study, adaptation theory study and cross-media study. In contents, the book is composed of four parts, including "What is adaptation? Why do we make adaptation?", "Adaptation/rewriting: critical dialogues with Shakespeare," "Variations of Shakespeare's remains in the English drama" and " Who writes Shakespeare?". Through its research, the book argues that though the critical consensus on the Bard's authority has been crumbled in the past decades with his mythical presence being disrupted in every possible way, Shakespeare has never been so vigorously alive in the disguised presence of adaptations in the piles of fragments and shatters that he is reduced to.

Abstract:In commemoration of the quater-centenary of William Shakespeare and Tang Xianzu in 2016, A Shakespearean Handan Dream, a Sino-British theatrical co-production, was staged in London, with Ke Jun and Leon Rubin as co-directors. The play contains four acts of Tang's Handan Meng (The Handan Dream), into which 12 Shakespearean episodes are inserted. Instead of merely representing cultural differences, the play is seen as an active performance event to shape the cross-cultural aesthetic experiences of the audiences and their cosmopolitan visions. As an avant-garde experiment, the play features a specific kind of "new interculturalism" in world theater, which challenges the existing modes of interpretation of intercultural theater. With reference to new developments in intercultural performance theory, this essay is concerned with the singularity of the intercultural performance, its social and political significance, and its contemporary relevance.

Abstract:Abstract Arranged chronologically, this article presents a general picture of Chaucer reception and translation in China, and examines the development of criticism and the interaction of readers with both the original texts and their Chinese translations. By using indicators like university curricula, editions of translations and reprints, critical analyses, adaptations, and popularizations, this study shows that there have been increasing readership in medieval literature and rising admiration for the poet throughout the reception history, with occasional sharp changes. This reception pattern is determined by a combination of factors such as the intrinsic qualities of the texts, readers' concern over contemporary social issues and their own literary past, and the political and intellectual context of the nation as a whole, as well as of interaction with the outside world.

Abstract:This article, which is organized along a chronological-thematic framework, will briefly review the early days of translating American and British fiction and drama into Chinese, the social context in which these translations were done, the literary ideas which have affected the work of Chinese writers, and the social impact that translated works of literature and literary theory have had in various periods of literature. The bottom line is that the literary works introduced to China to date represent only the tip of the iceberg. We need more quality translations for Chinese readers and more qualified and experienced translators to complete the job.

Abstract:King Lear is one of the four great tragedies written by William Shakespeare, a famous English dramatist and poet in the Renaissance. It is widely regarded as “the greatest play of Shakespeare and the best of his work”. As one of the important and indispensable roles in King Lear, the “Fool” is a clown that appears the most frequently and speaks the most abundant content of all clown characters in the four major tragedies. Though his words are not as many as the contents number of the leading roles in the work, his language features, image and influence are prominent and significant. In the middle of the 19th century, Shakespeare’s works came to China along with the western missionaries and were widely spread in China. And translators in different periods translated Shakespeare’s works based on different historical backgrounds and their own translation styles. Among many famous translators of Shakespeare’s work, Liang Shiqiu and Zhu Shenghao are prominent. Their translations have strong characteristics and representativeness. Liang Shiqiu adhered to the principle of “worship the truth” and respected the original text as much as possible. He mainly adopted the translation strategy of foreignization and wrote in vernacular prose, which was very beautiful and refined. Zhu Shenghao, on the other hand, upheld the theory of “seize the spirit”. He paid attention to readers’ feelings and mainly used domestication translation method with large number of words with Chinese characteristics. Thus, his translation is very idiomatic and vivid. From the perspective of Skopos theory, this paper will make a comparative analysis of the language characteristics of “Fool” in Liang Shiqiu’s and Zhu Shenghao’s translation work, the translation strategies they used and text effects of their works, so as to explore the influence of Skopos theory on translators’ translation and the solutions of translation problems.

Abstract:The cross-cultural performance of Chinese adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays abroad has gone through two stages: the ‘introduction’ of Shakespeare’s plays and the ‘going out’ of Chinese adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays. The paper aims to analyse the correlation between the two stages. By analysing the process of initiation, dissemination and reception of Chinese adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays [see Table 1], which have been invited to perform abroad for many times and have attracted a certain level of response from Western society, the paper attempts to build a network model for the performance and dissemination of Chinese cross-cultural theatre works carrying traditional Chinese culture in the West.

Abstract:Shakespeare should be first regarded as an artist, or more exactly, a dramatic artist. But he should also be viewed as a historian, or a sort of historicist. In speaking of Shakespeare as a historicist, we usually think of his history plays like King John, Edward III, Richard II, Henry IV, Henry V, Henry VI, etc., for the playwright has created some unforgettable historical figures in these plays based on real people. Actually, if we have a comprehensive reading and understanding of all Shakespeare's plays, tragedies, comedies and history plays, we can easily find that he actually plays the role of a historicist apart from his superb artistic achievements, not only because he has created quite a few history plays, but more important, his best tragedies and comedies could also be regarded as a sort of history plays. Although, from today's point of view, his theatrical narrations are not always faithful to the real historical records, they are indeed "textualized" or "dramatized" historical narratives. As compared with the study of Shakespeare's history plays in the West, the study of Shakespeare's drama in China is far from comprehensive. However, ironically speaking, on today's Chinese screen, we easily find so many "invented" "history plays" produced as TV dramas based on real people although in an ironic and parodic way of representation, but very few could be regarded as effective and successful. Thus we should say that Shakespeare's role as a historicist has not yet been recognized, at least in the Chinese context, although all his superb plays on history have more or less anticipated the rise of Chinese TV history plays.

Abstract:This article examines two huaju performances of Shakespeare—The Tragedy of Coriolanus (2007) and King Lear (2006), which are good examples of cultural exchanges between East and West, integrating Shakespeare into contemporary Chinese culture and politics. The two works provide distinctive approaches to the issues of identity in intercultural discourse. At the core of both productions lies the fundamental question: “Who am I?” At stake are the artists’ personal and cultural identities as processes of globalisation intensify. These performances not only exemplify the intercultural productivity of Shakespearean texts, but more critically, illustrate how Shakespeare and intercultural discourses are internalized and reconfigured by the nation and culture that consume and re-produce them. Chinese adaptations of Coriolanus and King Lear demonstrate how (intercultural) identity is constructed through the subjectivity and iconicity of Shakespeare’s characters and the performativity of Shakespeare’s texts.
The Translation of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales in China

Abstract:Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales have been popular among Chinese readers since they were introduced to China through translation a century ago. This paper studies the translation of Andersen’s fairy tales in China by focusing on prominent Chinese translators of Andersen and their landmark translations. Regarding translation as a social activity, the author attempts to interpret the behaviour of the translator in terms of the historical context in which it occurred, as well as the corresponding ideology of literature. It is argued that the language styles and translating strategies adopted by the translators of different ages have varied according to the translator’s understanding of the original works, his purpose of translating, the publishers’ interests and the readers’ expectations in the target culture, as well as the image of Andersen constructed in the socio-cultural context from which the translation emerged. Therefore, the translation practice, which has contributed to the canonization of Andersen in China, is a process of the translators’ negotiations with the fluid Chinese poetics and ideology of the 20th century.

Abstract:Lin Shu is proved to be the most famous translator of Western literature in China in the first two decades of the last century by quoting many famous scholars;but Lin Shu regarded himself as a classicist rather than a translator.According relevant historical data,Lin Shu was very meticulous while creating as a classist,and he cared more for speed while translating,but sometimes his genius as a classist made his translation very charming.It is also discovered that Lin Shu criticized severely the young radicals,who wanted to overthrow the classic Chinese tradition,although he was the first Chinese scholar who came to recognize the artistic value of the Western literature,and that he was a very innovative man,who claimed himself to be a conservative.
Research on the Way Shakespeare Influenced Modern Theater—Taking the Orphan of Zhao by James Fenton as an Example

Abstract:As an important part of the world’s drama culture, Shakespeare’s plays have a huge and far-reaching impact on the development of the drama of all countries. It became an important link of culture and communication in the world and a source of inspiration for drama creation. By seeing or reading modern plays, we can easily figure out lots of elements that will remind us of one or some of Shakespeare’s works. The Orphan of Zhao is an ancient Chinese play created in the Ming dynasty about a story that happened in about 591BC, which is also the first introduced and most famous play in the western world. This paper focused on the drama the Orphan of Zhao created by James Fenton for RSC in 2012 and the musical adaptation of it by the Chinese director Xu Jun to analyze the Shakespearean elements in it, to explore the profound influence of Shakespeare’s works on modern and contemporary theatrical works and dramatic adaptations. The paper mainly talked about the female friendships and the songs in both Shakespeareans and Fenton’s adaptation and also the work of these two elements in the play’s construction, story’s development and the theatrical stage representation.
