Commentaries on the Research of Category in Classic Literary Criticism in the Last Hundred Years

Abstract:The research in category is a hallmark for the independence of Chinese literary criticism,which was taken seriously by scholars at the very beginning,and brought about the first publications. However,it was not fully launched off until 1978,and it was heavily influenced by the research in Chinese history. The literary academia focused on three aspects,namely,the issues of veridicality of category,the system,and the transference. However,some problems arise from the boom of papers,monographs,series,and dictionaries,such as more main categories with few subcategories,more examples and few generalizations,more limited explanations and few systematic explanations. Hence,the forthcoming ecologically sound research should be conducted in multiple dimen-sions. To render the whole research deeper and more mature we must define category,understand its distribution and organization,discern its referents and levels,and highlight its system.
