Abstract:Mg–Sn-based alloys are considered as a promising precipitation-hardening system for applications at elevated temperatures, but the hardening effect is not satisfactory owing to sluggish nucleation and rapid coarsening of the major Mg2Sn lath precipitates. In this study, Cu and Al are added to a Mg–6Sn–1Mn base alloy. The age-hardening response and the microstructures of these modified alloys have been investigated and are compared to that of the base alloy. The additional elements are found to bring several beneficial effects to the alloys for applications at elevated temperatures. Firstly, a eutectic structure consisting of strong intermetallic phases, i.e. Mg2Cu in the Mg–6Sn–1Mn–2Cu alloy and Al0.93Cu1.07Mg in the Mg–6Sn–1Mn–2Cu–2Al alloy, remains stable along the grain boundaries after solution and ageing heat treatments. Secondly, the precipitate density has been increased significantly and the precipitate size has been refined remarkably during ageing at 200 °C. Moreover, the growth of the precipitates is inhibited remarkably during the over-ageing period. Abstract:The solidification microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast Mg-Al-Sn alloys have been investigated using computational thermodynamics and experiments. The as-cast microstructure of Mg-Al-Sn alloys consists of α-Mg, Mg17Al12, and Mg2Sn phases. The amount of Mg17Al12 and Mg2Sn phases formed increases with increasing Al and Sn content and shows good agreement between the experimental results and the Scheil solidification calculations. Generally, the yield strength of as-cast alloys increases with Al and Sn content, whereas the ductility decreases. This study has confirmed an early development of Mg-7Al-2Sn alloy for structural applications and has led to a promising new Mg-7Al-5Sn alloy with significantly improved strength and ductility comparable with commercial AZ91 alloy.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the impact of Bi addition on the heat resistance of as-extruded AZ31 alloy during high-temperature annealing and hot compression. Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) technique and quasi in situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used to analyze the evolution of microstructures during high-temperature annealing and hot compression, respectively. The test results show that with a prolonged annealing time, the as-extruded AZB313 alloy exhibited a lower grain growth rate, due to the pinning effect of Mg3Bi2 phases distributed at grain boundaries. On the other hand, as the compressive temperature increased, the downtrend of strength is delayed in the as-extruded AZB313 alloy. Thermally stable Mg3Bi2 phases dispersed within the grains act as barriers, hindering the motion of dislocations, which not only provides a more effective precipitation strengthening effect, but also increases the resistance to deformation of grains. Moreover, grain boundary sliding can also be restricted by Mg3Bi2 phases located at grain boundaries. This work provides a new idea for the development of heat-resistant wrought Mg alloys.

Microstructure and Hot Deformation Behavior of the Mg-8 wt.% Sn-1.5 wt.% Al Alloy

Abstract:Mg-Sn-Al alloy is a new type of heat-resistant magnesium alloy with great potential and the hot deformation process of this alloy is of great significance for its application. The microstructure, hot deformation behavior, textural evolution, and processing map of a Mg-8 wt.% Sn-1.5 wt.% Al alloy were studied. A Gleeble 1500 D thermo-mechanical simulator was used. The temperature of deformation was 653 to 773 K, the strain rate was 0.001-1 s-1, and the maximum deformation degree was 60%. The obtained results show that the rheological stress of the alloy decreases with an increase in deformation temperature and increases with an increase in the strain rate. The alloy is completely dynamically recrystallized at 653 K, and the entire structure is formed of homogeneous crystals/grains, with small secondary phase particles distributed at the crystal boundary. The mean apparent activation energy of hot compression deformation is 153.5 kJ/mol. The Mg-8 wt.% Sn-1.5 wt.% Al alloy exhibits excellent plastic deformation properties, an expansive thermal processing interval, and a narrow instability zone under the test temperature and deformation rate. The optimal process parameters of the alloy comprise deformation temperatures between 603 and 633 K and strain rates of 0.03 to 0.005 s-1.

Abstract:With the increasing attention received by lightweight metals, numerous essential fields have increased requirements for magnesium (Mg) alloys with good room-temperature and high-temperature mechanical properties. However, the high-temperature mechanical properties of commonly used commercial Mg alloys, such as AZ91D, deteriorate considerably with increasing temperatures. Over the past several decades, extensive efforts have been devoted to developing heat-resistant Mg alloys. These approaches either inhibit the generation of thermally unstable phases or promote the formation of thermally stable precipitates/phases in matrices through solid solution or precipitation strengthening. In this review, numerous studies are systematically introduced and discussed. Different alloy systems, including those based on Mg–Al, Mg–Zn, and Mg–rare earth, are carefully classified and compared to reveal their mechanical properties and strengthening mechanisms. The emphasis, limitations, and future prospects of these heat-resistant Mg alloys are also pointed out and discussed to develop heat-resistant Mg alloys and broaden their potential application areas in the future.

Abstract:Microalloying is believed to improve the performance of Al-Mg alloys, and the effect of Sn addition (0-1.2 wt.%) on the microstructure, mechanical properties and intergranular corrosion behavior of Al-9.2Mg-0.8Mn-0.2Zr alloys has been investigated to extend the application of Al-Mg alloys. The Sn addition forms the Mg 2 Sn phase, which refines the grain size and improves the strength, where the yield strength of the alloy improves by 27 MPa with the addition of 0.6 wt.% Sn. Moreover, the addition of Sn improves the intergranular corrosion resistance of the alloys, where the intergranular corrosion mass loss of as-sensitized alloy with the addition of 0.3 wt.% Sn decreases by 35.2% compared to the Sn-free alloy. This is attributed to the formation of the Mg 2 Sn phase which reduces the driving force for the precipitation of the β-Al 3 Mg 2 phase.

Abstract:<p>Low melting point alloy is a potential high-temperature heat transfer medium because of the high thermal conductivity, low solidus temperature and wide range of use temperature. Consequently, we investigated the possibility of using Sn–Bi–Zn–Ga alloys as heat storage and heat transfer material. Moreover, we investigated the microstructure and phase compositions by electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffusion (XRD). Results show that the new structures and phases are formed in the alloy matrix with Ga additions, which lead to the improvement of the thermal properties. An extensive thermophysical characterization of the Sn–Bi–Zn–Ga alloys has been performed by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) analysis. The addition of Ga lowers the peak temperature and increases the heat capacity of the alloys. The thermal expansion of the test alloys increases with increasing temperature and the densities decreases with Ga additions. As the density, specific heat capacity and thermal diffusivity change with temperature and physical state, the thermal conductivity of the alloys first decreases and then increases. These results demonstrate the feasibility of using Sn–Bi–Zn–Ga alloys as the high-temperature heat transfer fluid.</p>

Abstract:In this work, the microstructure and room/high-temperature (RT/HT) mechanical properties of Mg-1.0Bi-1.0Mn-1.0Al-0.5Ca-0.3Zn (BMAXZ11110, wt%) alloy, subjected to extrusion at low temperature of 300 °C and high ram extrusion speed of 9 mm/s, have been systematically investigated. This alloy exhibits excellent microstructural thermo-stability during high-speed extrusion without obvious grain coarsening, especially for the edge of alloy bar. Profuse micro/nano-scale second phases (Mg 2 Bi 2 Ca, Al 8 Mn 5 and α-Mn) and the co-segregation of Ca and Zn atoms at grain boundaries (GBs) /residual dislocations can be observed. The co-effects of nano-scale phases and solute segregation facilitate the formation of bimodal grain structure in the BMAXZ11110 alloy. At RT, it possesses high tensile yield strength (TYS, ∼ 327.1 MPa), and GB strengthening is the most primary mechanism. At 250 °C, this alloy still can maintain relatively high TYS (∼ 187.8 MPa), indicating that it also exhibits high heat resistance. Even though the contribution of GB strengthening on the TYS decreases at 250 °C, solute segregation strengthening increment makes up for its reduction to a large extent. Hence, this study will be helpful for developing a new generation of high-strength high-speed extruded Mg-Bi base alloys accompanied with good heat resistance.

Abstract:Low elastic modulus and magnetic susceptibility play a vital role in the design of biomedical alloys. However, many existing bio-alloys do not meet these requirements, which is the main reason for limiting their application areas. Therefore, we present a method that proper Sn addition can lower elastic modulus and magnetic susceptibility in this study. The microstructure, mechanical properties and magnetic susceptibility of Zr-16Nb- x Ti- y Sn ( x =4 wt%, 16 wt%; y =4 wt%, 6 wt%) alloys were studied. With increasing Sn addition, the fractions of β and α ″ martensite phases are increasing and decreasing, respectively. Elastic modulus, mechanical strength and elongation are roughly increasing with higher Sn compositions except Zr-16Nb-4Ti-6Sn. The increased Sn concentration from 4 wt% to 6 wt% can reduce magnetic susceptibility, especially in Zr-16Nb-16Ti alloy. These evolutions are closely correlated with the change in microstructural characteristics as phase fractions of β and α ″ martensite phases of alloys, which can be ascribed fundamentally to the difference in Sn concentrations. Among these alloys, the Zr-16Nb-4Ti-6Sn alloy shows the best combination of mechanical properties and magnetic susceptibility.
Achieving advanced elevated-temperature strength by tailoring precipitates in Mg-Sn-Y alloys

Abstract:The Mg-Sn-Y alloys exhibiting advanced elevated-temperature strength up to 300 °C were newly developed by tailoring precipitates through partially substituting and increasing yttrium (Y) (2, 3.5 wt%) for tin (Sn) in Mg-2.5Sn alloy. The effects of precipitates on the room/elevated-temperature mechanical properties, and the related dynamic precipitation behavior were investigated. The elevated-temperature strengthening mechanism of the alloy was revealed. The precipitates transformed from Mg 2 Sn in Mg-Sn alloy to Sn 3 Y 5 in Mg-Sn-Y alloys. The abundant Sn 3 Y 5 nanoparticles formed in the as-extruded Mg-0.5Sn-3.5Y alloy which exhibited significant higher peak strength as 223 MPa compared to that of Mg-2.5Sn as 53 MPa. The calculation of the critical nucleation energy for dynamic precipitation indicated that the Mg-Sn-Y alloys exhibited a smaller nucleation barrier for dynamic precipitation of dense nanoscale Sn 3 Y 5 particles compared to the Mg-Sn alloy. This barrier was further decreased with increasing Y content, as exemplified by the increased area fraction of nanoparticles in the Mg-0.5Sn-3.5Y alloy. The abundant Sn 3 Y 5 nanoparticles can inhibit the grain boundary crack propagation, and the formed fine grains (~3.8 μm) can effectively hinder the dislocation motion. Therefore, the present work demonstrated that coupling a high area fraction of thermally stable nanoparticles with grain refinement can provide an effective approach to acquire superior elevated-temperature strength for Mg alloys.

Abstract:Calcium (Ca), with abundant and cheap reserves, is a potential element to facilitate the further application of Mg-Al-Sn based alloys. Here, effects of Ca content on the microstructure and tensile properties of Mg-2.0Al-0.8Sn (wt.%) alloys were systematically studied. The experimental results illustrated that the strength, ductility and isotropy of the alloys improved simultaneously with the increase of Ca content. The better ductility and isotropy could be contributed to the weakened texture via particle stimulation nucleation mechanism. The higher strength benefited from the combination of finer grains, more precipitates and residual dislocation density. Eventually, the Mg-2.0Al-0.8Sn-0.5Ca (wt.%) alloy showed the best room-temperature balance of strength and ductility with a yield strength of ∼226.0 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of ∼282.4 MPa and a fracture elongation of ∼20.2%, which has huge potential as an applicable low-cost high-performance magnesium alloy.

Abstract:Mg-Sn based alloy system is a typical age-hardenable Mg alloy system with Mg2Sn as the major precipitation phase. Eutectic temperature at Mg-rich end of Mg-Sn phase diagram is much higher than those of Mg-Al and Mg-Zn phase diagrams, which is comparable to that of Mg-RE phase diagram. So Mg-Sn based alloys are hopeful candidates of rare-earth free heat resistant Mg alloys with low cost This paper systematically reviews research progress in age-hardenable Mg-Sn based alloys. The main second phase beta-Mg2Sn has a fcc structure with different lattice parameters reported, one of which the most frequently adopted is a(beta)approximate to 0.676 nm, agreeing well with calculations of interfacial orientations. Twelve orientation relationships (ORs) between Mg2Sn precipitates and Mg matrix have been identified. Those with similar morphologies, i.e., the same long axis direction or the same habit plane, are possibly related to different ORs. Addition of Zn benefits the appearance of beta-Mg2Sn precipitates inclined to the Mg basal plane, which are more effective to hinder dislocation movement on the basal plane and result in a greater strengthening effect. Effects of various alloying elements on age-hardening response and mechanical properties of Mg-Sn binary alloys have been summarized. Elements such as Zn, Al, Ag and Na can enhance age-hardening responses. Due to formation of highly thermal stable compounds with Sn, RE, Ca, Sr and Li exhibit negative effects. Consequently, alloy design of Mg-Sn based alloys faces more difficulties, requiring an in-depth investigation of phase transformation processes. Finally, future research directions have been specified.

Abstract:Abstract Magnesium alloys show great superiority for modern applications due to their good biocompatibility, degradability, and excellent mechanical properties. In this paper, the strengthening effects and mechanisms of composite precipitation phases, microalloying regulated recrystallization behavior, composite grain organization, and new strain aging methods in magnesium alloys are investigated in terms of five stages of work hardening, heat treatment, and strengthening properties. The use of rare earth elements can effectively enhance the aging strengthening properties of magnesium alloy through the use of gadolinium ( Gd ) and yttrium ( Y ) in rare earth elements for the development of high-strength magnesium alloy. The results show that the solubility of aluminum in magnesium reaches the maximum of 12.6mmass.% at the eutectic temperature of 436°Cand then gradually decreases with the decrease of temperature, and when the temperature decreases to room temperature, the solubility decreases to 2mass.%. The elongation of alloy 0.5Al alloy 0.5Zr alloy on the basis of the aging state was 6.7% and 4.8%, respectively. This paper provides theoretical and experimental guidance for the development of high-strength magnesium alloys through an in-depth study of strengthening mechanisms such as composite precipitation strengthening, crystal strengthening and strain aging strengthening.

Abstract:The thermal conductivity of Mg-Sm binary alloys is relatively poor due to the severe lattice distortion introduced by the high solid solubility Sm atom in the Mg matrix, which restricts their widespread application. In this study, the viability of Al alloying (0-2.6 wt%) in permanent mold cast Mg-4Sm (wt.%) alloy was investigated to design cast Mg alloys with high thermal conductivity. It is found that the thermal conductivity significantly improved with the addition of Al content, and peaked at 136.8 W/(m & BULL;K) with an Al content of 1.5 wt%, which is attributed to the release of the Sm atoms from the Mg matrix. It is also confirmed that minimizing the lattice distortion effect is critical to achieving high thermal conductivity. The formation of Al2Sm and Al11Sm3 phases leads to a dramatic decline in solid solution strengthening due to its strong consumption of the dissolved Sm atoms, but in the meantime enhances secondary phase strengthening and promotes stronger interactions between different strengthening components. The optimum combination of mechanical properties and thermal conductivity is obtained in Mg-4Sm-2Al alloy, which possesses a yield strength of 102.6 MPa, elongation of 6.8% and thermal conductivity of 124.5 W/(m & BULL;K), compared with several commercial as-cast Mg alloys.
