Southeast Asia and Interregionalism: A Historical Perspective

Abstract:From a historical perspective,Southeast Asian interregionalism emerged earlier than regionalism,and it could be subdivided into three different forms,bi-interregionalism,trans-regionalism and quasi-interregionalism.According to Southeast Asian indigenous actors' status and role,interregionalism evolved from following,weak leading and weak participating in the Cold War to strong leading,strong participating in the Post-Cold War,and then achieved a fundamental shift from dependence to independence and center.In the historical evolution process,interregionalism and regionalism were closely interconnected and then formed two kinds of relations,interactive and constitutive,which may bring about some causal effects,common institution and collective identity respectively.
