Abstract:Components of high-rise diagrid tubular structures were illustrated geometrically and structurally. The sensitivities of the lateral stiffness of this type of structure to related factors were evaluated, including geometric parameters such as angle of diagonals, distance between two adjacent ring beams, and height-to-width ratio, i.e. aspect ratio of the building, along with structural factors such as node connections, corner columns, and relative stiffness between diagonals and ring beams. Elastic response spectrum analysis was carried out for a series of structural models. With increase of the aspect ratio, the optimal angles of the diagonals to maximize the lateral stiffness increase but the range narrows. The angle of the diagonals and the aspect ratio are dominant factors to the lateral stiffness, while less sensitive to the distance between two adjacent ring beams, especially in the region of the optimal angles. Comer columns, particularly node connections and relative stiffness between diagonals and ring beams slightly affect the lateral resistance, and some degree of stress concentration is caused in comer columns. Generally, the angles of the diagonals are determined primarily using the aspect ratio, and other structural and architectural decisions can be made according to architectural consideration and convenience for construction.
