Abstract:Dynamic performance is an important index of high-speed on/off valve in the digital hydraulic field. Optimizing the control algorithm is an effective method to improve the dynamic performance of existing high-speed on/off valves. Usually, a high-voltage excitation method is used to realize fast switching of the high-speed on/off valve, but this also leads to a high temperature rise, large energy consumption, and long delay times when switching off. In this article, an intelligent pulse-width modulation control algorithm is proposed to improve dynamic performance while minimizing temperature rise and energy consumption of high-speed on/off valves. A high-frequency voltage source with full positive, low positive, full negative, and zero duty ratios is applied to drive the high-speed on/off valve in opening, maintaining opened, closing and maintaining closed states, respectively. The adaptive switching of these four duty ratios is realized by real-time current feedback which can estimate the operational state of the high-speed on/off valve, so that the current in the loop is always in the optimal state. A mathematical model of the high-speed on/off valve is built, and based on it, the theoretical formulas for the delay time, temperature rise, and energy consumption of the high-speed on/off valve are deduced. Simulation results indicate that the intelligent pulse-width modulation control algorithm has a better performance in dynamic characteristics than normal high-voltage excitation methods. Moreover, experimental results from a test system indicate that the intelligent pulse-width modulation control has the potential to shorten the opening time by 23.6% and closing time by 17.0%, which confirms the simulation results. Results also showed the ability to extend the controllable working duty ratio by 83.3%, to reduce temperature rise by 69.9%, and reduce energy consumption by 88.8% when compared to the matched controller of the tested high-speed on/off valve. This article presents an effective and practical method to improve the performance of high-speed on/off valves.

Abstract:This paper researches on the hydraulic servo system by using ordinary on-off valves. The mathematic model of an asymmetric hydraulic cylinder servo control system is built, and its characteristic is analysed here. To reduce the static and dynamic characteristic differences between forward and reverse motion of asymmetric cylinder, and improve system’s performance, a self-tuning linear quadratic gaussian optimum controller (SLQG) is designed successful. In the end, an asymmetric hydraulic cylinder servo system of paint robot is researched. The result shows that the above method is effective.

Abstract:The ultrahigh pressure pneumatic on-off valve is very important for reducing pressure by expander that is used for enhancing the efficiency of ultrahigh pressure pneumatic power system. The operation principle and dynamic property of the valve are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The problem of needing large driving power and slowing response in ultrahigh pressure pneumatic on-off valve is solved by pneumatic dynamic force balance method. A two-stage valve that uses a pilot solenoid spherical valve to control a large flow-rate poppet valve is developed. The definitions and rules of dynamic processes are given, based on the control chamber volume whether changing or not, and on the key pressure points in the control chamber. The mathematical models of the valve are established.

Abstract:A single on/off valve is used to carry out the position control of the asymmetrical hydraulic cylinder. The influence of the nominal flow rate on the positional accuracy of piston is investigated and the proximate formula for calculating the nominal flow rate of on/off valve is introduced. The system structure proposed in this paper could avoid cavitation and hyper pressure in two chambers to some extent. The simulation results indicated that the control method in this paper could satisfy the expected control requirements.

Abstract:Aimed at achieving a high speed and precision circumferential positioning of pipe under low energy consumption, a paralleling hydraulic control of variable frequency motor and valve (PHC-VFMV) system is designed for the swing mechanism of segment erector. Firstly, with a view to the working principle of the swing mechanism, a hydraulic circuit of the PHC-VFMV is designed. Then, two sub-circuits of the hydraulic circuit are separately modeled and equipped with suitable controllers. Finally, one valve control (VC) system and the designed PHC-VFMV system are tested in AMEsim platform. Results show that, while guaranteeing a good performance of speed and accuracy, the PHC-VFMV could achieve a better performance in energy saving than VC.

Abstract:An on/off piloted pneumatic extra-high pressure reducing valve was designed.The input pressure is up to 35 MPa,and the output pressure ranges from 4 MPa to 25 MPa.The control strategy is electric closed-loop feedback.The main valve adopts plunger-type structure.The pilot structure is composed of two extra-high pressure on/off valves.A nonlinear mathematical model of the valve was established to analyze the effects of structural parameters and controller parameters on the valve's dynamic characteristics,and then experiments were carried out on a pneumatic test-bed.The results showed that the valve works well under the designed pressure.The regulating chamber volume and the size of the pilot choke have the most important influence on the valve's dynamic characteristics,and increasing the regulating chamber volume or reducing the pilot choke size is the most effective solution to reduce the vibration amplitude and improve the accuracy of output pressure,at the price of reducing the swiftness of the system.

Abstract:The PWM solenoid is the critical component of the shift control system. To reduce the electronic flow and power consumption, as well as to offset the influence of the fluctuating voltage and temperature, research on the control characteristic of the PWM solenoid was conducted. After the introduction of the structure and usage of PWM solenoid, the flow equation when it is open and close was established. And through the flow rate balance relationship, the pressure control and amplitude characteristics that can be used in the pilot control and on-off control of hydraulic circuit was obtained. Then based on the differential equation of the control circuit of the PWM solenoid, the precise current control characteristic was obtained to act as the basis for future control. Finally, the testing experiment shows that the calculating pressure and current characteristics conform to the experiment result.

Abstract:High speed on/off solenoid valve (HSV) has often been used for pressure and flow control in hydraulic systems, which require faster and more stable dynamic performance of HSVs to improve control preciseness. For some kinds of HSVs which rely on the hydraulic pressure to operate, their dynamic performance is greatly influenced by the magnitude of the hydraulic pressure. In this paper, a self-correcting PWM control algorithm for highspeed on/off valves is proposed to improve and even maintain the HSVs' original dynamic performance under changing pressures. Using current feedback analysis based on critical switching currents, the operational state of the HSV is estimated and the adaptive switching of different duty ratios of power source is also realized to optimize the switching behavior of HSV. Finally, through numerical and experimental studies, it is demonstrated that with the proposed control algorithm, the dynamic characteristics of the HSV is not only greatly improved but adapted to pressure changes, and the variation range of the dynamic performance can be controlled within 7.4% (0.3 ms) under 4-20 MPa operating conditions. The presented control algorithm is effective and can be applied in HSV-controlled systems to improve the robustness of the target actuator.
Simulation and Experimental Investigation on Pressure Dynamics of Pneumatic High-Speed On/off Valves

Abstract:The high-speed on/off valve's dynamics according to the traditional definition is difficult to extract and to clearly trace back its physical origin. A new method,symbolized by the turning points of pressure in the control chamber,and both characterized by the delaying time of the pressure transmission and the rising time in the recharging process,was proposed to describe the traits of dynamic pneumatic valves.The mathematical models based on the valve's submodels of electromagnetic,mechanical and pneumatic transmission were obtained according to the above definitions.Some influencing factors to the valve's dynamic characteristics,such as the volume of the valve controlled chamber and the cross-section area of the valve core,were analyzed by Matlab simulation tools,and a test facility was built up to verify the simulation results.The agreement between the simulation results and the experimental data proved the effectiveness of the mathematical models and the testing system.When the ratio of length to diameter is in the range of 10 to 15,the opening and closing time delay of the valve can be easily obtained from the pressure dynamics of the valve controlled chamber.

Abstract:The characteristics of high-speed on-off solenoid valve and its application in automatic leveling control system for asphalt paver are introduced.A set of control scheme using high-speed on-off solenoid valve is designed.The experimental bench is established.The control schemes of normal on-off solenoid valve and high-speed on-off solenoid valve are compared through experiments.The results show that the high-speed on-off solenoid valve can be used in automatic leveling system.It can speedup response time of control system,and improve the influences of dead zone on the control system,while extra-high modulation frequency is not good for the system.

Abstract:A finite element Simulation model of pneumatic high-speed on/off valve actuator was built to analysis its steady state and transient performances. Optimal design was implemented by turning the fringe part and boring the center part of the armature base on steady state finite element analysis. Comparing with the original actuator, the optimized actuator considerably reduces the armature weight that the actuator's response times are decreased by typically 8% under different work conditions. Finally, prototype valves were fabricated according to the optimized actuator model, and a test facility was also built up to obtain the valve's dynamics. The agreement between the simulation results and the experimental data proves the effectiveness of the simulation model.

Abstract:High-speed on / off valve (HSV) has been widely concerned in the field of hydraulic engineering, mainly focusing on improving its dynamic characteristic. However, relatively little attention is paid to the adjustment of HSV switching characteristic, which limits the applications of HSVs in some specific systems. Therefore, an advanced pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control algorithm is proposed in this article to change the dynamic behaviors of the experimental HSV and makes it adjustable in a wider scope to adapt to more applications. Applying the voltages of opening preduty ratio and holding duty ratio, the opening initial current and closing initial current can be generated, respectively. Combining with the voltages of opening duty ratio and closing duty ratio, the opening and closing dynamic behaviors can be fully controlled and adjusted in a wide range. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is proved by numerical analysis and experimental studies. Results show that the opening delay time can be controlled in a range of 0.2–18.3 ms and the closing delay time can be adjusted in a range of 0.1–6.8 ms, while the opening moving time can be adjusted from 1.9 to 14.1 ms and the closing moving time can be adjusted from 1.8 to 6.1 ms. Consequently, the total opening time and total closing time can be controlled in the ranges of 2.1–32.1 ms and 1.9–12.9 ms, respectively. Compared with the conventional single voltage control strategy, the advance PWM control algorithm is verified to be a promising method to improve or even adjust the dynamic behaviors of HSVs and adapt to more complex working conditions.

Abstract:： Aiming at the problem that the dynamic characteristic of the sphere structure high speed on/off valve(HSV) is greatly affected by the supply pressure, a control algorithm for HSV that adaptive to supply pressure changes is proposed. Adaptive switching of multi-voltage sources is realized by combining current feedback operation principle with calculating critical switching currents of HSV under different supply pressures, so that the dynamic performance of the HSV under changing supply pressure can be preserved. Theoretical analysis proves that the supply pressure has a great influence on the dynamic characteristic of the HSV. Both simulation and experiment results achieve the expected effects of the presented control strategy. Compared to the single voltage driving method, the results show that when supply pressure changes from 5 MPa to 20 MPa, the presented control algorithm can effectively shorten the total switching time by 56.9%-75.8%, expand the controllable duty cycle range by 45.9%-240.6%, and improve the maximum operation frequency of HSV by 161.0%-637.5%. What’s more, the change ranges of both total switching time and controllable duty ratio can be remained within 2.1%, and the difference coefficient of maximum operation frequency is less than 4.6%.

Abstract:High speed on-off valve is applied widely in vehicle control systems. When high speed on-off valve is controlled by Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) of high frequency, the valve core can float at a certain position which is adjusted by changing the duty ratio within a certain effective range. Then the high speed on-off valve can control the flow and pressure linearly like proportional valve. Thus it is essential to extend the effective range of duty ratio to improve the linear control performance of high speed on-off valve.In this paper, the high speed on-off valve of the automotive Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is the focus, and its flow force is analyzed in detail to get the effects of hydraulic parameters on the valve performance. The mathematic model of the high speed on-off valve is derived. Then the valve structural parameters are optimized according to the Genetic Algorithm(GA), offering the theoretical references for extending the effective duty ratio of PWM. Besides, the simulation model of high speed on-off valve is established in MATLAB/Simulink, and then embedded in the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) simulation model established in AMESim, resulting in the co-simulation model of hydraulic actuator. Finally the simulation model is verified by the hardware-in-loop tests. Based on theoretical analysis, simulations and tests, it is critical to increase the range of flow force for extending the effective range of duty ratio. The pressure difference, the valve seat angle and the throttle diameter of the high speed on-off valve have great effects on the flow force. At last the effects of structural parameters of the high speed on-off valve on extending the range of the linear control are proposed, serving as references for improving the linear control performance of high speed on-off valve.
Study on Control Performance of Pilot High-Speed Switching Valve

Abstract:High-speed switching valves have been widely studied as pilot valves because of their advantages on easy digital control, low power loss, and non-sensitive to oil pollution. However, there are still lots of difficulties and problems between discrete flow and response time. In this article, two high-speed switching valves are used to pilot a three-way main stage valve. By adjusting the duty ratio of pulse width modulation control signals, the main stage can output continuous flow and pressure. The control performances of two pilot stage methods, which are high-speed switching valve and proportional valve, are compared through the theoretical analysis and the dynamic simulation. It is found that three factors directly affect the response time of the main stage, which are the control signal, the operating frequency of high-speed switching valve, and the pressure of the control chamber. The main valve can achieve better performance if optimized parameters are applied.
Study on Feeding System of Hydraulic Drilling Rig Based on High Speed on-off Valve

Abstract:Feeding pressure of hydraulic drilling rig control is a critical technology of drilling quality during the drilling process.In order to control feeding pressure accurately during hydraulic drilling rig's working,a new feeding system was proposed on the basis of the cartridge valve controlled by high-speed on / off valve.Feeding pressure was exported proportionally via control of high-speed on / off valve's Pulse Width Modulation(PWM) input signal.Its simulation model was built using AMESim software,to select appropriate the frequency of PWM control signal on the basis of the analysis of characteristics of the cartridge valve controlled by high-speed on / off valve,and to analyze the feeding system's response to commanded pressure signal.The analysis results show that the feeding pressure can be regulated proportionally and that the control performance of the feeding pressure can be improved by increasing moderately the frequency of PWM signal,which provides a reliable reference for the further optimization of hydraulic system of drilling rig.

Abstract:High speed on-off valve controlled by pulse width modulation(PWM) of high frequency can get the valve floated at a certain orifice which is adjusted by changing the duty ratio.In consequence,the flow and pressure can be controlled proportionally by the valve so as to it is used widely in vehicle control system.But the duty ratio range of PWM control on high speed on-off valve designed by our country is narrow,and the valve is easy to open and close completely.In order to improve the controllability and control precision of the valve,it is necessary to study how to extend the duty ratio range.Based on the high speed on-off valve for the automotive electronic stability program(ESP),the flow force of the valve is in-depth analyzed in this paper.Besides,the co-simulation model of hydraulic control unit is established by AMESim and Matlab,which is also verified by test.Consequently,it is shown that the effect of the poppet angle of valve body and diameter of inlet on the displacement of valve.The crucial parameter on the extending of the duty ratio range is acquired.The result can provide references for the design and development of the high speed on-off valve.

Abstract:As the working conditions of host equipment become more complex and severe, performance improvement and increased intelligence of high speed on/off valves (HSV) are inevitable trends in the development of digital hydraulic technology. The characteristics of HSVs can be regulated by control strategies, which determine the comprehensive performance of the system. This paper discusses the development of control strategies for HSVs. First, the results of research in relation to the discrete voltage and pulse control of single HSVs and the coding control of parallel HSVs are summarized. In addition, the advantages, disadvantages and application scope of different control strategies are analyzed and compared. Finally, the development trends are predicted from the performance regulation, intelligent maintenance, intelligent coding and function programmability.
