Abstract:In this study, an impact loading technique involving a gas-gun-driven graded generalized impedance flyer (GGIF) is developed. The GGIF consists of a plate that incorporates an array of conical pins, and is fabricated additively by selective laser melting (SLM). The loading wave profile generated in the impacted target corresponds to a smooth increase in particle velocity over a rise time that can be prescribed, and precludes the formation of a shock discontinuity; this is denoted as ramp-loading or quasi-isentropic loading. The characteristics of the ramp-wave profile are governed by the "sharpness" of the conical pins and the flyer impact velocity. The nature of spalling in stainless-steel targets subjected to such ramp-wave loading, was investigated experimentally. Loading corresponding to a common strain rate but different shock pressures were induced in tests and it was found that for a given impact velocity, the duration of the rise time in the initial phase of compressive loading, has little effect on the rate of tensile unloading. The experimental results also confirm that the spall strength of the stainless steel studied depends on the strain rate and is essentially independent of the shock pressure. Fractographic analysis of the fracture surfaces shows that damage evolution and localization are influenced by the height of the conical pins on the flyer, which indicates that shock pressure is the main factor determining damage evolution after its initiation.
