Abstract:Thermal cycle of 7050 aluminum alloy during friction stir welding at different welding speed was measured. The effect of thermal cycle on microstructure and mechanical properties of HAZ was analyzed by microhardness test, optical microscopy and TEM. The results show that thermal cycle temperature at each measured point arrive at the maximum value just when the stir head travel to the vertical line of the weld in which the measured points locate. The temperature in the retreating side is approximate 20℃ higher than that in the advancing side. The peak temperature rises and the holding time at high temperature prolongs with the decrease of welding speed. Under the rotation rate at 600 r/min and welding speed at 100 mm/min, the peak temperature in the central weld can achieve 458℃. Thermal cycle influences the mechanical properties of HAZ by changing the size and distribution of the precipitates.
