Abstract:Micro-sized crystals of mesoporous zeolite NaA (meso-NaA) are prepared and their mechanical strength is compared with conventional NaA crystals. Crystals are characterized by nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy and dynamic light scattering. It is found that micro-sized meso-NaA crystals composed by numerous domains of interconnected nanocrystals can be easily smashed by hand-grinding, showing lower mechanical strength than conventional crystals. The suspension of zeolite NaA nanocrystals (similar to 110 nm) can be easily obtained after removing micro-sized crystals by centrifuging the suspension of the grinded crystals at 1000 rpm and can be used to seed hollow fiber supports. Zeolite membranes with high separation performance are obtained on the seeded hollow fiber supports by seeded growth. This method may open a new way to prepare zeolite nanocrystals for many applications. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Series nanosized zeolite was prepared by using direct of adding method.The method needn't use amine model reagent and guiding reagent.It used natural white ultrafine calcined kaoline and NaOH as raw materials.Its advantages included low raw materials cost,simple synthesis process,short production period and high crystallinity.The new material prepared in the tests was characterized by XRD, TEM, and TG-DTA.
Manipulation of the Surface Microstructure and Its Effects on the Flux of NaA Zeolite Membranes in Pervaporation

Abstract:NaA membranes with different microstructures are synthesized on macroporous alumina tubes with the addition of crystallization improving agents (CIAs) which have the same composition with the synthesis hydrogel but are aged for a longer time (e.g., 24 h). The as-synthesized membranes are characterized by SEM, contact angle measurement and pervaporation test. It is found that the addition of the CIAs in the synthesis hydrogel has significant influence on the surface roughness of zeolite membrane, resulting in the change of the hydrophilicity and thus flux of the zeolite membrane. Dense NaA membranes with high flux of 4.53 kg m(-2) h(-1) can be obtained at 100 degrees C for 3 h with the addition of 10 wt% CIAs in the synthesis hydrogel. The flux is increased by 14% compared with the membrane synthesized at the same condition without CIAs. The surface roughness of the membranes can also be changed by the method of polishing and re-synthesizing with the assist of nano-seeds. After polishing, the flux decreases to 3.83 kg m(-2) h(-1); however, the flux can be recovered to 4.45 kg m(-2) h(-1) after re-synthesizing. This study provides a good method to enhance the separation efficiency and indicates that the surface microstructure of membranes influences their pervaporation performance. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:This paper reviews the synthesis of nanosized silicalite-1,ZSM-5,TS-1,beta,A and Y zeolite.Low-temperature hydrothermal crystallization is the ideal approach for obtaining discrete zeolite colloids with crystal size of less than 100 nm.Other methods,such as confined-space crystallization,peso-solid phase crystallization etc.are also possible for obtaining zeolites with nanosized particles.Dispersed nanosized zeolites have typical colloidal properties such as high external surface area,abundant surface hydroxyl and self-aggregation properties.Zeta potential of colloidal zeolites changes with pH,zeolite composition,crystal size,and structures.The nanozeolites possessed some unique physico-chemical properties which are different from those of the large crystal zeolites.With high dispersibility and abundant surface hydroxyls,nanozeolites are perfect building blocks in nano-assembly technology.Using the assembly properties of nanozeolites,various hierarchical structured zeolite materials have been successfully fabricated.In some of the applications in catalyst field,nanosized zeolites also have the merits of high activity,long lifetime and special selectivity.

Abstract:Zeolite nanocrystals (nanozeolites) represent a hot topic in the domain of porous materials due to their controllable colloidal character, short diffusion path and large and adjustable surface. In the first part of this chapter, various hierarchical assembly strategies including template-directed (such as polymer, carbon, mesoporous silica and bio-templates) and template-free methods as well as the construction of micro/mesoporous composite have been reviewed in detail. Although there is still a long way to go for commercialization and adapting these newly born materials in industrial processes, the application of the nanozeolite and their hierarchical assemblies have shown their potentials with some of the emerging, exciting examples in catalysis and biology. The recent progress of the application of nanozeolites and their hierarchical assemblies are summarized in the second part. Finally, a prospect of the nanozeolitic materials on the hierarchical assembly and application is envisaged which is aimed to provide a brief guidance to the readers.

Abstract:This paper explores the behaviour and role of NaA nanozeolites during an interfacial polymerization process towards a polyamide thin film nanocomposite (TFN) reverse osmosis membrane by incorporating nanozeolites into two different reactive phases. In the two cases, the different interactions occurring between the zeolites and polyamide were investigated by FT-IR spectra, XPS analysis, and examining the membrane morphology and the desalination performance. The polyamide TFN membrane with an increased degree of cross-linking was obtained with nanozeolites in the organic phase, as the NaA zeolite reacted with the acyl chloride monomer in the organic phase. Additionally, the membrane with nanozeolites added to the organic phase had a superior reverse osmosis performance, since the porous zeolite appeared in the top layer as a water channel.

Abstract:Zeolite NaA membranes were prepared in a clear synthesis solution without the aid of nanoseeds. To improve the properties of the membranes formed in a clear solution, alumina hollow fibers were fabricated by adding silica powder to the conventional spinning slurry, resulting in hollow fibers with a mullite phase. Prior to the membrane synthesis, the hollow fibers were pretreated by dipping in an aged synthesis solution diluted with isopropanol. Dense zeolite NaA membranes on mullite-containing alumina hollow fibers were successfully obtained at 100 degrees C for 2 h without the aid of nanoseeds. The membranes have a good pervaporation performance with a high flux of 10.8 kg m(-2) h(-1) and a separation factor of over 10,000. The abundant mullite-phase hydroxyl groups on the support surface promote the nucleation and growth of zeolite crystals on the support, resulting in dense membranes. Abstract:Variations in the structure and acidity properties of HZSM‐5 zeolites with reduction in crystal sizes down to nanoscale (less than 100 nm) have been investigated by XRD, TEM and solid‐state NMR with a system capable of in situ sample pretreatment. As evidenced by a combination of 27 Al MAS NMR, 29 Si MAS, CP/MAS NMR and 1 H MAS NMR techniques, the downsize of the zeolite crystal leads to an obvious line broadening of the 27 Al, 29 Si MAS NMR spectrum, an increasing of the silanol concentration on the external surface, and a pronounced alteration of the acidity distribution between the external and internal surfaces of the zeolite. In a HZSM‐5 zeolite with an average size at about 70 nm, the nonacidic hydroxyl groups (silanols) are about 14% with respect to the total amount of Si, while only 4% of such hydroxyl groups exist in the same kind of zeolite at 1000 nm crystal size. The result of 1 H MAS NMR obtained using Fluorinert ® FC‐43 (perfluorotributyl amine) as a probe molecule demonstrates that most of the silanols are located on the external surface of the zeolite. Moreover, the concentration of Brønsted acid sites on the external surface of the nano‐structured zeolite appears to be distinctly higher than that of the microsized zeolite.

Abstract:Zeolite NaA was successfully prepared from nickel laterite residue for the first time via a fusion-hydrothermal procedure. The structure and morphology of the as-synthesized zeolite NaA were characterized with a range of experimental techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. It was revealed that the structures of the produced zeolites were dependent on the molar ratios of the reactants and hydrothermal reaction conditions, so the synthesis conditions were optimized to obtain pure zeolite NaA. Adsorption of nitrogen and carbon dioxide on the prepared zeolite NaA was also measured and analyzed. The results showed that zeolite NaA could be prepared with reasonable purity, it had physicochemical properties comparable with zeolite NaA made from other methods, and it had excellent gas adsorption properties, thus demonstrating that zeolite NaA could be prepared from nickel laterite residue.

Influences of the Zeolite Loading and Particle Size in Composite Hollow Fiber Supports on Properties of Zeolite Naa Membranes

Abstract:NaA/polymer composite hollow fibers (CHF) used as zeolite NaA membrane supports are fabricated from the dope slurry of NaA zeolite, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and polyethersulfone (PES) using a dry–wet spinning process. The CHF supports can avoid seeding process and have great potential for developing low-cost zeolite membranes with high reproducibility. The influences of the spinning condition, the zeolite loading and particle size on the properties of the CHF supports and zeolite NaA membranes are investigated in detail. The supports and membranes were characterized by SEM, bending strength tests and water/ethanol pervaporation separation tests. Dense membranes with the separation factor >10,000 were obtained on the Z1 (4.0μm)-85 (85wt.% NaA) and Z2 (1.5μm)-75 supports after the synthesis of 5h, while the zeolite membranes obtained on the Z1-70 and Z1-75 supports had pinholes. A dense membrane with the separation factor >10,000 was obtained on the Z2-85 support after the synthesis of 4h. The results indicate that the CHF supports with smaller zeolite particles were better as the supports for zeolite NaA membranes. The flux of the zeolite membrane on the CHF support increased with the zeolite loading because the increase of the zeolite loading resulted in the increase of the support porosity. However, the increase of the zeolite loading can reduce the mechanical strength of the supports.

Abstract:Acid-extracting residue of circulating fluidized bed (CFB) fly ash is still underutilized leaving disposal problems. In fact, high silica content inside this material opens a possibility to become a potential zeolites precursor. In this study, fine particles of acid residues have been reused to prepare zeolite Na-X and Na-P with high purity and intensity. Acid residue was used to synthesize zeolite Na-X and Na-P using a single step hydrothermal process. The effects of crystallization time, temperature and sodium hydroxide concentration on the end products were investigated. The results revealed that crystallization time and temperature determined whether or not zeolite Na-X or Na-P was formed. The zeolites were characterized in terms of their mineralogical composition, morphology, and fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy.
Synthesis of Ultra-Fine NaA Zeolite by Low-Temperature Hydrothermal Treatment

Abstract:Ultra-fine NaA zeolite particles of dimensions less than 1 μm have been synthesized by low-temperature hydrothermal treatment using commercial silica sol and sodium aluminate as raw materials.Such particles are actually composed of elementary NaA zeolite nanosized crystals.The effects of reaction conditions including Al_2O_3/SiO_2 molar ratio and crystallization time at certain temperature to the products were investigated.The products were characterized by the X-ray diffraction(XRD)and the scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The results showed that the ultra-fine NaA zeolite could be obtained by low-temperature hydrothermal treatment using silica sol as silicon source.The prepared NaA zeolites maybe used as detergent builder.The synthesis mechanism was also discussed here on the basis of the experimental results.

Abstract:A-type zeolite membranes were synthesized on seeded Al_2O_3 particles under hydrothermal conditions.The crystal structure and surface morphology were characterized by X-ray diffraction,Raman spectroscope and scanning electron microscope techniques.The effects of seeds and multi-stage synthesis on the quality of the membranes were investigated.The quality of A-type zeolite membranes is improved by the multi-stage synthesis methods,a thin and continuous membranes is formed on the surface of Al_2O_3 particle.The thickness is increased from 15 μm to 50 μm after three-stage growth compared with two-stage growth.
Preparation of Asymmetric Zeolite NaA Membrane Layers by Vapor Phase Transfer and Seeded Growth Method

Abstract:Asymmetric zeolite NaA membrane layers are synthesized on tubular α-Al2O3 supports by the vapor phase transfer method followed by seeded growth. The preparation of the asymmetric zeolite NaA membrane layer includes the preparation of porous zeolite NaA membrane sublayer by vapor phase transfer method and the preparation of dense top layer by seeded growth. The effects of the Na2O/Al2O3 ratio, pretreatment time and water content of the hydrogel, as well as the vapor phase transfer time on properties of porous zeolite NaA membranes are investigated. The optimal conditions of the hydrogel are as follows:pretreatment temperature 50 ℃, pretreatment time 5 h, and the composition of the hydrogel 7.5Na2O:2SiO2:Al2O3:150H2O. The seeds of 120 nm are coated on the porous zeolite NaA membrane by wetting-rubbing. Asymmetric zeolite NaA membrane layers are synthesized with the secondary growth method from the seeded membranes. Zeolite NaA membranes are characterized by SEM and pervaporation separation of 90% ethanol aqueous solution at 75 ℃. The flux of the membrane is up to 3.43 kg/(m2·h), while the separation factor is 3 685.
Controllable Preparation of Cubic Zeolite A and Application of Langmuir Model in Carbon Dioxide Adsorption

Abstract:A large amount of remaining fly ash has been piled up or landfilled, which not only a waste of land resources but also results in a series of environmental problems. Therefore, using fly ash to produce high value-added products is a win-win development orientation between human beings and nature. In this study, zeolite A is successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal method using fly ash. Additionally, it is at 1.0 mol·L−1 of the alkali concentration that the crystallinity of zeolite A reaches the maximum value, about 96.6%. FTIR research shows that the main secondary structural unit D4R vibration band of zeolite A appears at 555 cm−1. The results of the SEM study indicate the structure of zeolite A is cubic. The TEM results show that the crystal structure of the zeolite A belongs to the body-centered cubic structure. Meanwhile, the positively charged sodium ions cooperate with the silicon oxygen tetrahedron and the aluminum oxygen tetrahedron to form the zeolite A skeleton. Carbon dioxide adsorption equilibrium study shows that the maximum adsorption capacity of zeolite A of 46.5 mL·g−1 is significantly higher than the maximum adsorption capacity of commercial-grade zeolite 4A of 39.3 mL·g−1. In addition, the application of the Langmuir model in the adsorption of carbon dioxide by commercial-grade zeolite 4A and zeolite A is studied, which not only extends the application of zeolite A, but can be further extended to other zeolite materials as well. Meanwhile, the adsorption process belongs to the Langmuir model, which is a single layer adsorption on an ideal surface.

Selective Preparation of NaX Zeolite from Natrual Materials by Directing Agent Method

Abstract:Zeolite NaX was selectively prepared by conversion of natural aluminosilicate-rich minerals of kaolinite and an industrial waste of coal gangue through hydrothermal treatment using directing agent. Residue of bauxite mineral for preparation of polyaluminium chloride (PAC) was also convened into zeolites by using this method. The prepared zeolites were characterized by means of XRD and scanning electron microscopy. Then, ion-exchange ability was determined. A new process for preparing PAC coagulant and zeolite from aluminosilica-rich mineral was therefore proposed. This is a low-cost and environmentally benign method to convert natural aluminosilicate-rich minerals 10 zeolite materials. Products from this method had good ion-exchange ability and could be used as catalysts, adsorbents, and ion-exchange materials.

Abstract:Zeolites have been widely used in ion-exchange,sorption and separation as well as catalysis fields due to their large surface area,high adsorption capacity,uniform and intricate channels,high thermal and hydrothermal stabilities,and well-defined micropores with excellent shape-selectivity in catalysis. In recent years,a series of breakthrough achievements has been made in the fundamental research of zeolites in China. This manuscript will briefly summarize these progresses including the accelerated crystallization of zeolites via hydroxyl free radicals, construction of stable aluminosilicate zeolite with extra-large pores, in-situ imaging of topological flexibility of a rigid zeolite framework as well as atomic imaging of zeolite-confined single molecules by electron microscopy,excellent performance in adsorption-separation and catalytic transformation of small hydrocarbon molecules,and flexible zeolite electrolyte solid-state Li-air battery. Prospective and challenges in the fundamental research of zeolites will also be conveyed.

Abstract:A high-speed dispersion homogenization-assisted alkali fusion-hydrothermal method was successfully developed for the preparation of NaA zeolite molecular sieve with excellent adsorption performance for ammonia nitrogen using solid waste fly ash. The zeolite molecular sieve, prepared at a calcination temperature of 700 °C and a crystallization temperature of 80 °C, was identified as NaA zeolite molecular sieve through XRD and SEM tests, exhibiting a uniform and ordered cubic crystal structure. The result of BET analysis indicates that the NaA zeolite molecular sieve has a specific surface area of 288.219 m 2 /g and a plentiful pore structure. And the effect of pH, adsorption time, and initial concentration of ammonia nitrogen on the adsorption capacity of NaA zeolite molecular sieve was also investigated. The fitting analysis of experimental adsorption data using adsorption kinetics and isotherm models indicates that the kinetic adsorption of ammonia nitrogen solution by zeolite molecular sieve follows the second-order kinetic model more closely. The Langmuir model shows better correlation than the Freundlich model, suggesting that the adsorption of ammonia nitrogen solution by the zeolite molecular sieve is mainly based on the surface-uniform monolayer physical adsorption process. Under the conditions of pH = 7 and an initial ammonia nitrogen concentration of 100 mg/L, the adsorption capacity of zeolite molecular sieve for ammonia nitrogen within 60 min can reach 27.5 mg/g, showing excellent adsorption performance. This study establishes a vital research foundation for the utilization of fly ash and the treatment of ammonia nitrogen wastewater, with great ecological and social benefits.
