Abstract:Thucydides has always been seen as a model of objective history. This paper argues that although Thucydides consciously aims at recording history objectively and develops a methodology for it, an analysis of his text shows that what he achieves is a rationally constructed historical reality.

Abstract:Considering the morphological change and social crisis resulting from it in modern capitalist society,Habermas,from the perspective of economy,politics,culture and humanity,comprehensively analyzed and reflected on the "multiple malaises" of modern society and constructs the fundamental contents of his social critical theory,laying a logical starting foundation of his own theoretical system.Latter,through inverting the relationship between instrumental rationality and communicative rationality,he combined the criticism in "instrumental rationality" by reconstructing "communicative rationality",refining the logic thread of his theoretical system.Finally,he proposed the "global citizen society" targeting at the plight of the times as the logical destination of his theoretical system,which explored the other path to the emancipation of mankind,enriching the Marxian philosophy on human liberation.

Abstract:This paper attempts to assess Herodotus' achievements within the history of Greek thought and to illustrate the perspective from which he writes his Histories.History in the sense of historiography is not a natural result of human civilization,but is created against specific intellectual and cultural background.As far as ancient Greece is concerned,the emergence of rational thinking played a vital role in the creation of history out of myth.Herodotus built on the historical consciousness already manifested in Hecataeus and created the Western historical tradition.Through a narrative of alien cultures,he revealed to the Greeks a world consisted of two opposing parts,Greeks and barbarians,and thus laid the foundation of the tradition of east-west polarization in history writing.

Abstract:Since the latter half of the twentieth century, many Western scholars have questioned the veracity of Herodotus's historical record from the angle of writing style, narrative model, the use of sources, and purpose of writing. They further deny Herodotus's identity as a historian and the continuity between classical historiography and modern historiography. In response to these many criticisms and challenges, many scholars have also written in defense of Herodotus's reputation as a historian. This article is written in the context of these two strands of scholarly thought in Herodotean studies. The article tries to comprehensively evaluate, from an intellectual history perspective, the philosophical background in which Herodotus produced his works, his cultural context, his writing model, and narrative logic. The writing genre started by Herodotus was a new model of understanding for ancient Greeks substantially connected to later "historiography" in terms of its influence.

Abstract:Conflicts and tensions among major powers are often seen as clashes of interests between entities with significant influence. Nevertheless, from a historiographical standpoint, one would challenge the validity of such a simplistic view. The themes of nations that have to be considered full are undeniably formed by comprehensive historical and cultural components. Hence, it is essential to comprehensively evaluate cultural disparities to have a comprehensive understanding of interstate conflicts. This research uses case studies and qualitative methodologies to conduct a comparative analysis of the ideologies and national value identities that underlie Chinese-American interactions during the last decade. It focuses on the cultural distinctions inherited from China and the United States in order to get a deeper understanding of these connections. This research posits that the concept of democracy is firmly ingrained in the cultural and political fabric of these societies, giving rise to divergent ideologies. Numerous pieces of evidence indicate that the cultural aspects of a country significantly influence its political evolution.

Abstract:Western scholars’ recent research on Athenian democracy is mostly in favor of the theory of "revolution". They argue that Athenian democracy was born of a people’s revolution. However, there is no consensus on the timing of the outbreak of this revolution. In fact, this theory, to a certain extent, arises from their use of the model of the great revolutions of the modern West to explain the history of ancient Athens. For ideological reasons, Western scholars do their utmost to avoid using Marxist class analysis, although it offers a better explanation of the political history of Athens from the archaic period through to the classical age. Throughout this period the long-term, ceaseless and active struggle of the lower citizen class against the wealthy aristocratic class was the fundamental driving force in the establishment and maintenance of Athenian democracy.

Abstract:Over the horizon of the grand Western political tradition,there are two sub -traditions twisting,confronting and struggling with each other:from a historical perspective,the two sub-traditions are represented respectively as Solon-Cleis-thenes which tries to build up Politeia (πολιτεíα)through a series of legislations,and Pisistratus-Pericles's Tyrannos-Fore-most Man whose superb characters guarantee the efficient working of the system.Intellectually,these two sub-traditions can be conceptualized as the tensions between Right vs.Will,Word vs.Sword,Law vs.Force.In what way can we make them accom-modate with each other?This question has been the long-cherished goal of any political orders.In his Peloponnesian War, Thucydides made substantial efforts defending,if euphemiously,Pisistratus-Pericles'institutions,while Thomas Hobbes trans-formed Thucydides'arguments into modern political science.This essay makes a comparison between the two thinkers with the following intentions:one aiming to reevaluate the significance of Thucydides' revelation of Tyrannos-Foremost Man tradition through Hobbes's“theoretical eyes”;the other trying to figure out a new historical framework in which Hobbes's civil science could be understood.

Abstract:This thesis focuses on the question of objectivity of historical research, which includes such factors as researcher, object, media, and methods of historical research. It is argued that the pure objectivity of history is a kind of myth. The objectivity of historical research is flexible and its range is relative. Sources, the researcher, and methods determine it, while the researcher is the most active and leading factor. In such context, historical research will reach some objectivity in a certain dimension if he keeps pursuing it. To criticize the myth of objectivity is to make better use of its reasonable content.

Abstract:This article analyses Thucydides' narration of the beginning of Peloponnesian War,compares it with IR scholars' interpretation of Thucydides,and finds that the difference is evident.On the one hand,Thucydides focuses on the particularity of war and its beginning,while IR scholars tend to generalize some universal causes of war by reading Thucydides;On the other,Thucydides does not search "cause" or causality in modern sense,but record what he saw as the signs of war,while IR scholars try to prevent or control war by discovering the causes of war.The differences between Thucydides and modern scholars raises such a question:How should IR students read classics

Abstract:This work offers the first systematic analysis of writings on modern Chinese history by historians in China from the early twentieth century to the present. It traces the construction of major interpretive schemes, the evolution of dominant historical narratives, and the unfolding of debates on the most controversial issues in different periods. Placing history-writing in the context of political rivalry and ideological contestation, Huaiyin Li explicates how the historians' dedication to faithfully reconstructing the past was compromised by their commitment to an imagined trajectory of history that fit their present-day agenda and served their needs of political legitimation. Beginning with an examination of the contrasting narratives of revolution and modernisation in the Republican period, the book scrutinises changes in the revolutionary historiography after 1949, including its disciplinisation in the 1950s and early 1960s and radicalisation in the rest of the Mao era. It further investigates the rise of the modernisation paradigm in the reform era, the crises of master narratives since the late 1990s, and the latest development of the field. Central to the author's analysis is the issue of truth and falsehood in historical representation. Li contends that both the revolutionary and modernisation historiographies before 1949 reflected historians' lived experiences and contained a degree of authenticity in mirroring the historical processes of their own times. In sharp contrast, both the revolutionary historiography of the Maoist era and the modernisation historiography of the reform era were primarily products of historians' ideological commitment, which distorted and concealed the past no less than revealed it. In search of a more effective approach to rewriting modern Chinese history, Reinventing Modern China proposes a within-time, open-ended perspective, which allows for different directions in interpreting the events in modern China and views modern Chinese history as an unfinished process remaining to be defined as the country entered the twenty-first century.
Relativism,Narrativism and the Question of Objectivity in History

Abstract:Historical objectivity which has been held as the central value and basic faith of the historical profession has experienced serious challenges since the early 20th century for twice,one came from the historical relativists,such as Charles Beard and Carl Becker in the 1920s and 1930s,and the other was raised by the postmodernist currents of which the narrativist orientation was the concrete embodiment in the field of historical theory. If the selectedness and subjectivity that historiography and historians cannot cleansed off themselves has been rendered as the main reasons in the relativist critique of objectivity,then,what the narrativists used to do the same thing were the ethical and aesthetic dimensions of historical texts and some characters of historical texts seen as a whole it disclosed. Analysis of the above theses assured the present authors to suggest that objectivity in history can be still held,but we should discuss it in a much more moderate way and add certain qualifications on it. The existence of historical reality and the crafts of historical profession should be affirmed,and they should be taken into consideration as much more important factors than before if we still want to get historical objectivity warranted.

Abstract:Judith Shklar has been invoked by contemporary realists as an example of how history is a better source of political knowledge than abstract philosophy. This emphasis on history challenges the predominant understanding of her political theory that stresses the universality of fear of cruelty. This contrast between history and moral universalism invites a serious investigation of Shklar's historical method. This article takes up this task by reconstructing a Shklarian historical method based on a tripartite relation between historical memory, democratic citizenship, and historically minded political theory. This reconstructed historical method challenges the boundaries of Shklar's liberalism and broadens the possibilities that her political theory can offer.

Abstract:Contrasting with Popper's opposing to the historicism in the sense of determinism,Husserl is opposed to the historism in the sense of relativism.All the problems of philosophy of history would be concluded to two questions:the history has an intrinsical structure or not,and the structure would be grasped or not.Husserl's thought is not only to consider the history which has a intrinsical structure of sense from the standpoint of content,but to provide the method named horizontal ideali-zation for the structure,to criticize the historical relativism according to them.Meanwhile,idealization may be clarified further in comparing with another two realization modes of idea object,which are idealization and verbalization.In sum,Husserl's thought of history emphasizes the relationship between the inner history and the actual history,denies the contingency of concepts and propositions,and stresses the meaning of truth behind the proposition.

Abstract:The Peloponnesian War, 431–404, between democratic Athens and oligarchic Sparta was a long, destructive war ending with the total surrender of Athens. Scholars of Thucydides, the ancient historian of the conflict, have dwelt on two different explanations of the causes of the War. First, the "Thucydides' Trap", which argues that Sparta's fear of the growing power of Athens rendered peace arrangements non-credible and made war inevitable. Second, the unwise leadership, which blames key political leaders for their erroneous judgments in the affairs of the state. Using the perspective of the economics of conflict the present study questions both views. It argues that the non-credibility of peace is at best an incomplete explanation of the conflict, and the unwise leadership hypothesis requires a systematic account of the factors affecting leaders to choose war. Noting that the clash between Sparta and Athens had started earlier, in 460, the study shows that its causes related to calculations of material and non-material benefits from victory, perceptions of the probability of military success, problems of domestic political accountability, and the valuation of the future. Importantly, it also shows that the role of these factors differed significantly at the different phases of the extended conflict.

Abstract:The dilemma of contemporary historical writing by a contemporary is mainly represented in the paradox between the universal wholeness and our limited experience,the past reality and present context, interpreting history and predicting future.Due to the temporal limitations,even for the specific fact which he has experienced in person,the historian has to immerse it in the long river of history for examination, which is represented in the process of historical accumulation and reflection.The contemporary history studies the events that we experienced not long ago,and records the experiences that happened in the near past.Even though Hobsbawra lived in the 20th century.As a historian of profound practical concern and strong social obligations,Hobsbawm integrated role of historical participant,an individual and a scholarly individual.He represented his particular understanding of the 20th century just elapsing from the perspec- tive and standing of a witness and a contemporary.For him,the dilemma remains the relationship between individual experiences and collective experiences.Yet another dilemma for contemporary historical writing is for the historian to integrate history and reality in the historical studies from the historical standpoint of view.There has been a gap between the understanding of reality and the predicting of future in the rela- tionship between the contemporary historical research and the historical significance,and how to bridge the gap becomes once more the dilemma for contemporary historical studies.It exemplifies the mandatory rep- etition of the past for the historians to predict the future trends with regard to older situation.

Abstract:The concept of history,understood in ordinary consciousness,doesn't represent original historical reality at all,but a production processed by thinking.Original experiences are presented in human being's actions.Very small part of it is turned into history with the conducting of thinking.When thinking changes original experiences into historical experiences,it also changes itself into historical thinking.Since we can only recognize the experience being processed by thinking,the original experience is merely a logical hypothesis.This makes it possible to describe the intergrowth state of historical experience and historical thinking.The process that original experience brought in historical thinking is also historical experience being conceptualized,i.e.the creating process of historical experience under the weaving of historical thinking.For historical thinking having different kinds of structures and skills in weaving historical experience,various possibilities of conceptualizations of historical experience exist.So we understand that what has been accepted as the historical noumenon is,in fact,the realization of one of various possibilities on conceptualization existing in historical thinking activities.

Abstract:Among the many depictions of the Yellow Emperor that survive in a number of early Chinese texts, the historicized image of this purported ancient sage king has been accepted by many Chinese scholars as that of a historical figure and has greatly inspired their reconstruction of China’s remote past. In examining some of the extant Huangdi narratives, especially passages preserved in the Discourses of the States [ Guoyu ], Records of the Grand Historian [ Shiji ], and Remaining Zhou Documents [ Yi Zhoushu ], this paper reveals a trend of historicizing an originally mythical Yellow Emperor presented in early Chinese writings. It also explores the historiographical reasoning behind such historicization and provides an alternative approach emphasizing the role of persuasion in the Huangdi narratives.

Abstract:The representation of the real is a touchstone for traditional literary criticisms.It has been tested through microscopic examinations and enjoyed a dominant position in the altar of literature throughout centuries,but in the context of postmodernism,this literary notion is brought into a scathing interrogation facing a severe challenge.In his A History of the World in 101/2 Chapters,Julian Barnes tries to explore the intricacies that merge history,art and reality in the hope of constructing a narrative of history.In so doing,he conveys to his readers a message that in the postmodern society,history does not record what really happens and that art is no representation of reality at all.The borderline between the real and the fictional has been blurred.The existence of the real is largely determined by operators of discourse power and interpreters of discourse.

Abstract:The reconstruction of the foundation of historiography in contemporary China requires that we correctly understand the revolutionary significance of historical materialism,and recognize the perspective of historical ontology it has created.When we see history,historians and historical studies from this perspective,we will realize that historiography as a branch of science has never entered into the historicity of historical events in a real sense.Historical studies that focus on a scientific approach have obscured the real foundation and goals of historiography in abstract formulations of historical affairs.Historical materialism's sublation of the philosophy of history is at the same time a sublation of abstract scientific attitudes.That plays an important role in un-concealment in historical studies.It creates new approaches for historical studies and sets up new principles for the interpretation of history.The real essence of historical materialism is a perspective on history that starts from the history of practice of perceptual consciousness.
