Abstract:This paper presents a real time zero current detecting (ZCD) method for synchronous DC-DC converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). A comparator with adjustable offset is utilized to sense the polarity of the inductor current. By monitoring the state of the switching node through a flip-flop, the offset of the comparator is automatically adjusted to achieve ZCD. Since the flip-flop consumes no static bias current and the offset comparator has lower demands for static current than a high speed one, the quiescent power dissipation is reduced. In addition, since there is little static power losses, the sampling circuits can remain always on to realize a real time detection, which is sensitive to the changes of regulator conditions. The proposed ZCD method is implemented in a boost converter with 50-mΩ NMOS power stage. Measured accuracy of the detection is in order of <;10 mA. With the ZCD method a maximum boost converter efficiency of about 92% can be achieved.

Abstract:A novel kind of chip which is used in high precision and low cost arc detection circuit (leakage detection included) was designed. Based on CSMC's 0.5pm process, the pad is specially designed to produce a specific capacitor. Cascode current mirror and trimming capacitors are used to generate a precise timing signal. High speed, large bandwidth and low offset op-amps with rail to rail output stage are used to realize the function of precise amplification of the current information. The chip is designed and simulated on the platform of Cadence. The experimental result shows that the chip can detect arc which is wider than 150ns and generate the corresponding interrupt signal.

Abstract:In conventional fast-ramp-based target detection schemes for the frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems, all chirp sequences are performed fully on two-dimensional fast Fourier transforms (FFTs) to estimate range and velocity of a target, and all range-Doppler cells are scanned by the two-dimensional (2-D) cell-averaging constant false alarm rate (CA-CFAR) detector to extract valid targets against background noise. This results in an extremely high computational complexity. To decrease the complexity while maintaining a desired performance, this article proposes a target detection scheme based on distributed one-dimensional (1-D) CA-CFAR and region-of-interest (ROI) preprocessing, which performs Doppler-FFT only for range ROI cells and scans only Doppler ROI cells to extract pretargets. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme significantly decreases complexity and simultaneously improves detection performance in terms of detection probability, figure of merit (FoM), and CFAR loss, as compared with the conventional schemes. The advantages of the proposed scheme over the conventional ones are further verified by field tests under multitarget scenario, using our recently developed FMCW radar with high angular resolution.

Abstract:Precise time difference (time interval) measurement has been widely applied in communication, detection, and metrology. Among the various methods of time difference measurement, the analog zero-crossing detection method and the full digital processing methods are commonly used in ultrasonic flow measurement application. Conventional full digital processing methods, which take advantage of total signals' waveforms, can have high accuracy in high signal to noise ratio (SNR) when employing a high enough sampling frequency and extremely high performance digital signal processors; but their accuracies are severely limited by the hardware costs and can be easily affected by the noise and the distortion of signals. As a viable method, the analog zero-crossing detection method can achieve high resolution, whose accuracy, however, is easily influenced by the detection threshold and baseline shifts of the received signals, as well as the noises. In this paper, the digital zero-crossing detection algorithm is proposed for ultrasonic flow measurement to achieve high-precision and high-robustness time difference estimation at relatively low hardware costs, i.e., a relatively low sampling rate (e.g., 10 Msamples/s) and a relatively low computational load. The digital zero-crossing detection algorithm is performed with the signal reconstruction and the least-square fitting technologies. The simulation and experiment results show that compared with conventional methods, the proposed method presents higher accuracy and higher robustness, especially in the case of low SNR.

Abstract:In electronic manufacturing process, Surface Mount Devices, such as Ball Grid Array or Quad Flat Package, are difficult to locate precisely because of image noise. To improve the detecting accuracy, this paper analyzed the difficulties of detecting SMDs and then proposed a new fast detecting algorithm based on complex moment, which utilizes moment invariance to determine the position and angle of Surface Mount Devices and eliminate the locating uncertainty from local noise. The experiments demonstrated that the proposed algorithm can detect Surface Mount Devices' position and angle efficiently and is more reliable than the algorithm based on edge detecting.

Abstract:The double-threshold method has been widely used in ultrasonic flow measurement to determine time-of-flight (TOF) due to its low cost and ease of implementation. Performance of this method is negatively affected by the cycle-skip phenomenon which occurs frequently under inconstant working conditions, especially varied fluid temperature. This paper proposes a method to suppress the phenomenon to facilitate reliable determination of TOF in ultrasonic flow measurement. First, the double-threshold method is used to generate a feature point to segment the signal. Second, based on the correlation coefficient and signal power, judgement factors of individual signal periods are calculated to determine signal onset. Finally, a valid zero crossing which has a constant lag from the onset is selected to determine the TOF. Thus, the cycle-skip phenomenon is suppressed. Two additional modifications are proposed to eliminate the influence of varied signal frequency and low sampling rate. The proposed method was validated by an experiment based on an ultrasonic water flow sensor. Results showed that the frequently appearing cycle-skip phenomenon can be successfully suppressed by the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new optical angle sensor, in which a mode-locked femtosecond laser referred to as the optical frequency comb is employed as the light source for the sensor. By using the optical frequency comb, whose carrier frequency is well stabilized by using an external frequency standard with the uncertainty of 10-11, both the sensor stability and the sensor sensitivity are expected to be improved. In this paper, the angle error caused by the frequency fluctuation of the laser beam is considered in the case of both the mode-locked femtosecond laser and a laser diode, which is a conventional light source for the optical angle sensor. A prototype optical sensor head with the mode-locked femtosecond laser is then fabricated for the angle sensor. Since the light wavelength of the mode-locked femtosecond laser used in this paper is out of the visible range, an alignment method based on laser autocollimation with a retroreflector is introduced to determine the zero-position for the angle sensor. This method is also effective in suppressing the influence of the alignment error such as a cosine error. Some basic experiments are carried out to verify the feasibility of the developed angle sensor with the optical frequency comb.

Abstract:The accuracy of a two-sample zero-crossing detection method is assessed by analytical uncertainty propagation and is verified in numerical simulations. Approximated expressions are given to evaluate uncertainty components due to linear interpolation, quantization, white noise and time jitter. The combined standard uncertainty of a detected zero phase is expressed as a function of the signal frequency, power of external noise and parameters of the digitizer used. The evaluation of the uncertainty of the measurand, derived from several detected zero-crossings, is illustrated with applications in frequency, displacement and free-fall acceleration measurements. The reported results can be used for uncertainty analysis and parameter optimization of a measurement system or a procedure, involving processing of sinusoidal signals.

Abstract:This paper presents a zero-crossing method for two-axis magnetometers that compensates the measurement offsets when sensor outputs are distorted due to the time-varying hard-iron interference and zero drift effects. The compensation method is derived based on a Kalman filter which can be used for real-time estimation. The performance of proposed method is evaluated using HMR2300r magnetometer with a ferromagnetic turntable. The angle estimation error after compensation was on the order of 1 to 2 degrees.

Abstract:Flicker noise and dc offset have strong impacts on the performance of zero-IF receivers. In this paper, we propose a generalized approach to eliminate such impacts on zero-IF architecture pulse compression radars (PCRs). The conventional low-pass filter in a zero-IF receiver is replaced with a predefined filter (PDF) to filter out the dc and low-frequency components from the demodulated radar signal. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that, based on the prior knowledge of the radar signal and the PDF, the performance degradation, due to the complete filtering of the low-frequency components, can be recovered through a newly deduced compensation equation. Our approach can be widely used in the implementation of highly integrated high-performance PCR systems in the future.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a Doppler radar sensor based approach capable of detecting both small- and large-scale biological motions. To fully recover the time domain motion information from backscattered microwave signals, the gradient descent and the extended DACM algorithms are utilized to solve the problems caused by DC offset and phase wrapping issues. Experimental results show that both Doppler bio-signals of the small-scale human cardiac motion and the large-scale human walk can be accurately detected. The proposed approach provides a generalized method for detecting different Doppler bio-signals in biomedical and healthcare applications.

Abstract:This paper presents a zero-current detector (ZCD) applied in high-frequency synchronous buck DC-DC converters to enable DCM/PFM operation mode. The proposed ZCD is designed based on power efficient synchronous comparators operating in different frequency, of which coarse comparator predetermines operating period of fine comparator while inductor current zero-crossing is accurately detected by fine comparator. Implemented in 0.18 μm HVCMOS process and operating in a buck converter at a switching frequency of 10 MHz, the proposed ZCD can achieve a sensing delay around 1 ns.

Abstract:<p>Determination of time-of-flight (TOF) is crucially important in liquid ultrasonic flow meters. There are some deficiencies of previous TOF detection methods in practical applications. Inspired by our last work and the knowledge of clustering algorithms, we proposed a TOF determination method based on ultrasonic signal onset (USO) detection and multiple-zero-crossing technique to solve cycle-skip problem caused by waveform change. This method categorizes the ultrasonic and the noise signal, and identifies the rough position of USO. A time value from the obtained zero-crossing time values is selected as the TOF. The main advantage of the proposed method is the high insensitivity towards waveform change, i.e., the effect of amplitude characteristics change on TOF detection is negligible. Numerical experiments were done to evaluate the performance of the proposed method and its anti-noise ability. Experimental validation on a liquid ultrasonic flow meter showed the proposed method is capable of obtaining the accurate TOF.</p>

A Novel CFAR Algorithm for Multi-target Detection with FMCW Radar

Abstract:Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detection plays a vital role in frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar systems. Most existing CFAR algorithms need to estimate background level before determining the detection threshold. In a multi-target scene, existence of interference targets could cause inaccurate estimation of background level, which will then lead to severely degraded performance of the CFAR algorithm. This is also called multi-target shadowing effect. To overcome the challenge, a compressed sensing CFAR (CS-CFAR) is proposed in this work, which detects the target of interest (TOI) relying on the correlation between the linear measurements of signal and the sensing matrix, instead of relying on an estimated background level as in conventional CFAR algorithms, and achieves a required false alarm rate by estimating the distributed parameters of reduced sample model. Through doing so the proposed CS-CFAR algorithm effectively mitigates impact of interference targets on the detection performance. Superiority of the proposed algorithm over the conventional ones in multi-target scenarios is verified by both simulation and test results.

Abstract:High quality time scale modification of signals is important in many applications. The difficulty is to achieve the necessary time scale modification yet maintaining the pitch information presented in the input signal. We presented a new, computationally efficient algorithm called SOLA (synchronized overlap and add) based on zero-crossing point. It is a time domain algorithm. The algorithm can provide a high quality output signal, and provides an order of magnitude improvement in processing speed when compared to the most popular method, SOLA (Roucos and Wilgus, 1985)

Abstract:To improve the mean acquisition time performance of the zero-padding (ZP) method, we propose to reduce the code phases searched in coarse acquisition by summing local pseudo-noise (PN) code and down sampling received signal. The detection and mean acquisition time performance of the proposed method is analyzed and compared with that of the zero-padding method. It is shown that the proposed method further reduces the mean acquisition time at the expense of degrading detection performance.

Abstract:The present methods of heterodyne interference signal processing were studied and their shortcomings were summarized. All of these methods might not be used to deal with signals with mid frequency difference. A noval way based on CPLD was put forward for integral detecting of the processing heterodyne interference signal with mid frequency difference. As a part of this method, a totally digital circuit was invented to eliminate opposite pulses and alternate pulses, and to reduce redundant task of the counter finally. Using a clock pulse, this circuit might reliably eliminate the unwanted pulses with two times or above clock's pulse width. The 28 bit plus-minus counter was realized in VHDL. Since the dual-frequency laser with 3～40MHz frequency difference had been invented, the measurement speed of dual frequency laser interferometer was expected to arrive 4m/s or higher.

Abstract:Today's communication systems typically use high resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). However, considering future communication systems with data rates in the order of 100Gbit/s the ADC power consumption becomes a major factor due to the high sampling rates. A promising alternative are receivers based on 1-bit quantization and oversampling w.r.t. the signal bandwidth. Such an approach requires a redesign of modulation, receiver synchronization, and demapping. A zero crossing modulation is a natural choice as the information needs to be carried in the zero crossing time instants. The present paper provides an overview on zero crossing modulation, achievable rates, sequence mapping and demapping, 1-bit based channel parameter estimation, and continuous phase modulation as an alternative zero crossing modulation scheme.

Anti-dynamic-crosstalk method for single photon LIDAR detection

Abstract:With increasing number of vehicles equipped with light detection and ranging (LIDAR), crosstalk is identified as a critical and urgent issue in the range detection for active collision avoidance. Chaotic pulse position modulation (CPPM) applied in the transmitting pulse train has been shown to prevent crosstalk as well as range ambiguity. However, static and unified strategy on discrimination threshold and the number of accumulated pulse is not valid against crosstalk with varying number of sources and varying intensity of each source. This paper presents an adaptive algorithm to distinguish the target echo from crosstalk with dynamic and unknown level of intensity in the context of intelligent vehicles. New strategy is given based on receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curves that consider the detection requirements of the probability of detection and false alarm for the scenario with varying crosstalk. In the adaptive algorithm, the detected results are compared by the new strategy with both the number of accumulated pulses and the threshold being raised step by step, so that the target echo can be exactly identified from crosstalk with the dynamic and unknown level of intensity. The validity of the algorithm has been verified through the experiments with a single photon detector and the time correlated single photo counting (TCSPC) technique, demonstrating a marked drop in required shots for identifying the target compared with static and unified strategy.
