Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology, Ahead of Print. In this paper, a new-type air foil bearing with combined bump foils is proposed. The bump foils are arranged and combined in the axial direction. The local and global stiffness of the bearing can be adjusted by the combination of the bump foils. Mechanical analysis of the bearing is carried out, and the mechanical model of the elastic deformation of the flat foil and the bump foils is constructed. Combined with non-isothermal Reynolds equation and energy equation, a fluid–solid coupling numerical calculation model is constructed. Through the actual bearing test research, the reliability of the established theoretical model is verified. On this basis, combined with the specific example, the influences of the structural parameters of the new-type foil bearing on its mechanical properties and lubrication performance are studied, and the specific influence curves are obtained. It is also found that the new-type bearing proposed in this paper has good adaptability to the shaft deflection. When the shaft is deflected, the bump foil at the axial end increases the minimum film height by generating large elastic deformation, which can help to avoid wear caused by direct contact between the shaft and the foil.

Abstract:Air foil bearings are a kind of self-acting lubricated bearing, which have potential applications in high-speed turbomachinery. Air foil journal bearings have simple structure that consists of top foil, bump foil, and bearing sleeve, and use gas as working fluid. However, the relative motion of top foil and bump foil, bump foil and bearing sleeve occurs when dynamic pressure is generated as long as there is spinning of shaft. Thus, the friction between each part of bearing should be considered when modeling. Many papers have theoretically shown the effect of Coulomb friction between top foil and top foil, bump foil and bearing sleeve on the static and dynamic performances of air foil journal bearing by developing many bump foil structural models. The results show that this foil structural Coulomb friction can significantly make bump foil stiffer. However, the improvement of the Coulomb friction effect through experiments is quite difficult and there is no study regarding this so far. The purpose of this paper is to certify the Coulomb effect on bearing performance by using experimental method. Two bump foil journal bearings are manufactured with different bearing sleeve surface roughnesses. Foil structure stiffness, bearing lift-off speed, and rotor dynamic behavior supported by two sets of bearings are measured and compared.

Abstract:<p>Widespread usage of bump-type foil journal bearing (BFJB) in oil-free micro-turbomachinery requires accurate predictions of dynamic performance characteristics, although it remains a challenging issue because BFJB reflects nonlinear both structurally and aerodynamically. This paper presented a simple experimental method to semi-directly obtain the minimum film thickness and dynamic stiffness of BFJB using the journal orbit. Numerical calculations and simulations are conducted to validate the experimental method. The micro-deformation and interaction of various foils are taken into consideration to improve the model precision. The results from the numerical model regarding the BFJB dynamic characteristics are compared with the experimental results coming from a dedicated test rig, which shows that the experimental results fluctuate obviously and agree not well with the numerical results at the start stage due to the presence of dry friction at that time, nevertheless, they show fantastic agreement as soon as a gas film is gradually generated to separate the shaft from the top foil. Therefore, the proposed experimental method is effective to predict film thickness and dynamic characteristics during the period from the lift-off time to the land-off time. The dynamic characteristics, along with the journal orbits also can be used to rapidly predict the dynamics behavior of rotor-bearing systems.</p>

Experiment of foil friction effect on static stiffness and lift off speed of bump foil journal bearing

Abstract:Two bump foil journal bearings with different surface roughness of bearing housing's cylindrical hole surface were manufactured. The test-bed was established by exploiting bump foil journal bearing to test the static stiffness and lift off speed of bump foil journal bearings using friction torque method. By comparing test results of each bump foil journal bearing, the effects of friction between bump foil and bearing housing on static stiffness and lift off speed of bump foil journal bearing were studied. The results indicate that reducing surface roughness of bearing housing's cylindrical hole surface can weaken the friction between bump foil and bearing housing, decrease the bearing static stiffness and lift off speed under the same bearing load capacity. It has engineering significance to improve the bearing structure design and extend the bearing life due to lower the wear of bearing surface. Moreover, the static stiffness of bump foil journal bearing has strong nonlinear characteristic, and increases with the increasing foil deformation, so it is necessary to consider the nonlinear foil structural stiffness when modeling the bump foil journal bearing.

Abstract:In this paper, a simplified nonlinear finite element for bump foil forming process of foil air bearings is developed. The bump foil is dealt with as flexible deformable body, the upper die and lower die are considered as the rigid body without deformation. The friction model between bump foil and dies with velocity-dependent friction forces is described by arctan function. The forming process of SS304 Stainless Steel bump foil under different loads is investigated with rigid-plastic finite element method. The simulation results are compared with theoretical values and experimental results. Therefore more feasible process parameters are obtained to fabricate the bump foils.

Abstract:The film thickness model accounting for air compressibility and foil deformation was established.Reynolds equation and film thickness equation were coupled through pressure and solved by relaxation iteration method and finite difference method.The pressure distribution and film thickness of bump foil bearing were calculated,and the effect of structure and other parameters on static characteristics of bump foil journal bearing were analyzed.The numerical results of bump foil bearing are in good agreement with the experimental data of relevant references,the model is proved to be correct and accurate.The distribution rules of film pressure and thickness were compared between foil bearing and traditional rigid bearing,it is revealed that foil bearing has higher load capacity than rigid bearing.With the increase of eccentricity and speed,load capacity becomes larger,and attitude angle is decreased.With the increase of speed,the gas film pressure and foil deformation are increased,and the minimum gas film thickness is getting bigger.

Abstract:Journal bump foil bearing (JBFB) is the key component in high-speed turbomachinery. In this paper, load carrying performance of the 2nd and 3rd generation JBFBs with axial and circumferential stiffness variations are investigated applying a curve shell model. A nonlinear algorithm is employed to impose contact/separate and stick/slide constraints to foil structures. An effective inverse method is proposed to design the circumferential variations of bump radii, obtaining evidently wider area (over 110°) where higher film pressure distributes. Reduced stiffness of edge bump strips increases bearing load capacity and frictional energy dissipation particularly for the misaligned rotor. Results indicate the 3rd generation JBFB can achieve over 60% load capacity improvement compared to the 1st generation bearing with uniform bump structure.

Abstract:Due to the complexity of lubricating characteristics in the variable-sectional and multiscale clearance, the absence of an effective prediction method and theoretical basis of multi-foil aerodynamic journal bearing with bump-backing foils needs to be further developed. Hence, a modified efficient static characteristics model has been established, of which the one-dimensional curved beam theory is integrated and the elasto-hydrodynamic influence is intelligently concerned. It can be used to well predict the influential mechanisms of operational, geometric, and physical parameter effects on the static characteristics, and the important variation laws are systemically clarified. It aims to furnish a more effective and computationally efficient method and theoretical foundation for this significant type of bearing and promote its engineering design and performance optimization.

Abstract:Differential equations of air film in elastic bump foil journal bearing were deducted by the perturbation method with air lubrication Reynolds equation and series expansions of air film, air film thickness and foil deformation. The mathematics model of the relations among air film thickness, bump foil deformation and air film pressure was developed in consideration of air compressibility. Both finite difference method and Newton-Raphson method were applied to solve the coupled differential equations and air film thickness mathematics model equations, while the variation rules of air film stiffness and damping coefficients were achieved with different eccentricities, speeds, perturbation frequencies and different length-diameter ratios. This provides a basis for bump foil journal bearing design, optimization and theoretical and test analysis of rotor-elastic foil bearing system. The numerical results show that the main air film stiffness is enhanced when eccentricity and speed increase, and the value of air film stiffness and damping of bump foil journal bearing are connected strongly with the perturbation frequencies.

Surface Topography Metrology and Properties

Abstract:In this paper, the bump-type foil journal bearings is developed with five different foil materials: Inconel X750 (IN-X750), Stainless steel 316 (SS316), Beryllium copper (BC), Spring steel EN42J (SP EN42J) and Phosphor bronze (PB). To develop the bump-type FJB, a complete fabrication process is described in details along with the design of fixtures. This fabrication process includes various machining operations such as milling, rolling, cutting, threading, forming etc. The forming load versus deflection curve is obtained for all the foil materials with the metal forming operation. After fabricating it, the load-deflection test is performed to evaluate the structural characteristics of these developed bump-type foil bearings. Further, the experiment analysis of bump-type foil bearings is performed to evaluate its tribological characteristics such as wear rate and surface roughness. Moreover, the rubbing temperature of bump-type FJB is also captured by using the thermal imager. From these study, it is observed that the metal forming operation is the most challenging step in the fabrication of bump-type foil bearings. The brittleness behavior of BC foil increases after the heat treatment. The experimental results show that the minimum wear rate and maximum surface roughness of bump-type FJB is found for the IN-X750 foil due to its higher toughness and hardness. The maximum spring-back effect in bump-type FJB is found for the Spring steel EN42J. These results demonstrate that the maximum structural damping and stiffness of bump-type FJB is found for the Phosphor bronze and Inconel-X750 respectively.

Abstract:The influence of foil predeformation on the static characteristics of bump foil journal bearings was analyzed in this paper.The air film thickness model was developed with considering the air compressibility and foil predeformation.Both finite difference method and Newton-Raphson method were applied to solve coupled Reynolds equation and air film thickness equation.Compared to the bump foil bearings with nominal clearance,air film thickness,pressure distribution and load carry capacity were discussed.The results indicates that the bump foil bearing with predeformation provides a better rotating stability and a greater load carrying capacity,and in some extent the foil predeformation is larger,the load carry capacity is higher.

Abstract:In this work, the development and implementation of a dynamic characteristics model for a specific multi-foil aerodynamic journal bearing with bump-backing foils (MFJB) is considered. Based on the previously established static characteristics model, the elastohydrodynamic influence is carefully considered, and the perturbation method is adopted, as this model is more effective and computationally efficient. The effects of the operational, structural, and geometric parameters on stiffness and damping coefficients are emphasized. The results show that the eccentricity ratio effects are more intensive when the bearing speed is at a moderately high level, which is no more than approximately 30,000 rpm. The foil thickness has obvious effects on dynamic characteristics, whereas the influence of the elastic modulus is limited. Within the research scope, the eight-foils bearing exhibits a better performance than the four-foils. This paper is designed to provide effective methods and supply theoretical guidance for improving the engineering design and operational stability of bearings.

Abstract:The Coulomb friction model for foil structure of bump foil journal bearing was developed by using finite element mothod. Through changing friction coefficient between top foil and bump foil, bump foil and bearing housing, the stiffness of foil strucure, the Coulomb friction model and linear spring model in earlier literatures were compared under various load distributions, and the effects of Coulomb friction on stiffness of bump foil was studied. The developed structural model was also integrated into foil bearing prediction code to evaluate the effects of the friction on the bearing static and dynamic performance.

Abstract:A type of foil journal bearings with double-layer protuberant foils as elastic support was studied by numerical analysis and experiments. Two kinds of material (beryllium bronze and stainless steel) with different elasticity were used for the protuberant foils of the bearings. The analyzing model couples the hydrodynamics pressure of the gas film to the elastic deflection of the top foil and the underlying protuberant foils. The hydrodynamics of gas film is described by the Reynolds equation. The top foil and the protuberant foils are modeled as thin plates and the protuberances are treated as rigid support. For calculating the deflection of the top foil, the deflection of the protuberant layer beneath the top foil is taken into account. With a given load, the gas film thickness and pressure are obtained by using finite element method and finite difference method. The key static and dynamic parameters are presented. In experiments, both of the two foil bearings run well in a turbo-expander. The new takeoff and shutoff pressure and speed are proposed for practical operation of the hydrodynamic lubricated high speed turbo-expander. In addition, the synchronous and subsynchronous rotor motions have been tested and analyzed. The experimental tests of the two bearings in a high-speed turbo-expander suggest that the bearing using stainless steel as the foil material shows higher stiffness, which agrees well with the numerical predictions.

Abstract:A model of double-layered bump foil journal bearing was developed with the consideration of inclination of the journal. The governing equation was solved with finite difference method (FDM) and then the static characteristics were calculated. The influences of bearing number, eccentricity ratio, bearing compliance and the ratio of bearing length and diameter on static characteristics were analyzed. The results show that double-layered bump foil bearing provides greater load capacity than single-layered bump foil bearing, and possesses good accommodation to journal inclination than rigid surface hydrodynamic bearings.

Abstract:Bump foil bearings without nominal radial clearance were analyzed. An air film thickness model and a bearing theoretical analytical model were developed accounting for air compressibility and foil deformation. To analyze hydrodynamic characteristics of bump foil bearings with different operating eccentricities, the air film thickness equation and Reynolds equation were coupled through pressure and solved by Newton-Raphson Method (NRM) and Finite Difference Method (FDM). The characteristics of an bump foil bearing model were discussed including load carrying capacity, film thickness and pressure distributions. The results of simulation show that bump foil bearing without nominal radial clearance can provide better stability and greater load capacity. This numerical analytical method also reveals a good convergence in numerical calculation.

Abstract:In the frequent start-up process of aerodynamic bearings, contact easily occurs between journal and bearing bush. In this research, novel hybrid metal rubber-bump foil bearings (MR-BFBs) were proposed. Based on rough surface contact and ultra-thin film lubrication theory, we studied the start-up performances of MR-BFBs. The results showed that the changes in both RSm and Ra caused great changes in the parameters pmax and A0. The increased start-up times led to a decrease in the load ratio Wc/W0 and the total friction coefficient, and an increase in both the linear velocity, the gas film pressure and the minimum gas film thickness. With the increase in the composite roughness, both the critical rotation speed and start-up time exhibited an upward trend.

Abstract:A numerical model coupling the hydrodynamic pressure of lubricant film with the deformation of foil structure was developed for a type of foil journal bearing with protuberant foil structure. An isothermal and isoviscous lubricant was used in the fluid model, and a perturbation method was applied to linearize the Reynolds equation. The top foil was modeled as a strip of rectangular thin plate supported at a rigid point. The distributions of film pressure, film thickness, and foil deformation were solved by the finite element method (FEM). The effects of eccentricity ratio, bearing number, and number of protuberances on the characteristics of bearings were analyzed.

Abstract:The characteristics of bump foil bearings with foil predeformation were analyzed by numerical method in this paper. In the absence of nominal radial clearance, a film thickness model and a theoretical model of bearings were developed with consideration of air compressibility and foil deformation. Finite difference method and Ncwton-Raphson method were applied to solve the coupled Reynolds equation and air film thickness equation. An actual bump foil bearing model was applied to discuss the influence of foil radial predeformation on the characteristics of bearings. The results of numerical analysis show that the bump foil bearings with predeformation display a better rotating stability and a greater load-carrying capacity than the bearings without predeformation.

Abstract:Traditional bump foil bearing, though widely used, is considered to have the problem of inadequate load capacity due to the effect of foil sag between adjacent bumps. In this paper, the thick top foil is applied to cope with the heavy load conditions, which has one order of magnitude larger top foil thickness than traditional top foil. Thick plate and curve shell models are developed to calculate the load-carrying performance of thick top foil bearing based on contact mechanics, and the sag ratio is introduced to describe the degree of foil sag and estimate the bearing load capacity. The impacts of top foil thickness on the stiffness of bearings in different sizes as well as on the adaptability to rotor tilt are discussed. The results indicate that the thick top foil (t(t) = 2 mm) bearing performs a nearly 100% enhanced load capacity at small gas film thickness whether rotor tilts or not. Thick top foil will increase the bearing stiffness of small size (d = 35 mm) and tends to have little influence on large-size bearing stiffness (d = 70 mm).
