Abstract:Polyimide foams were prepared from poly(ester-amine salt) precursor powder through a foaming process,using aromatic dianhydride and diamine as monomers.The influences of foaming temperatures and powder sizes on the cellular structures were studied.The results of mechanical and thermal tests showed that tensile behaviors were brittle,while compressive were flexible.Polyimide foams with higher density displayed better mechanical properties.Thermal conductivity increased with higher density of the foams or higher testing temperature.

Abstract:Taking 2,4,6-triaminopyrinide as triamine monomer,polyimide foams with cross-linked structures were prepared by foaming poly(ester-amine salt) precursor powders. The results show that the addition of triamine monomer has no obvious influences on chemical structures and aggregative states of polyimide precursors and the imidized products. Polyimide foams containing 2,4,6-triaminopyrimide has a 5% weight loss when the temperature is above 520 ℃ and possesses excellent flame retarding property. With the increase of content of triamine monomer,the mechanical property of polyimide foams is improved,and the glass transition temperature of polyimide foams increases.

Abstract:In order to obtain cellular materials with low dielectric properties, crosslinked polyimide foams were prepared using 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) and 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine (TAP) as monomer via a poly(ester-amine salt) precursor process. The structures of the precursors and the polyimide foams were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and FT-IR, while the morphologies of the polyimide foams were viewed from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements. The results revealed that the poly(ester-amine salt) precursor containing TAP could successfully be converted to a crosslinked polyimide foam with relatively uniform cell structure. Also, the crosslinking of TAP improved the mechanical properties of foams in comparison with the non-crosslinking systems. With increasing content of TAP, the dielectric constants of the polyimide foams decreased gradually. For the foam with TAP molar ratio at 15%, the dielectric constant was as low as 1.77 at the frequency of 10 kHz. Though the thermal resistance decreased slightly for crosslinked foams, the decomposition temperatures were still maintained above 520 degrees C. Copyright (C) 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:BSPIF-S-7.5A, a kind of open cell and low-density polyimide foam was developed for Chinese satellite. The polyimide foam is thermal isolation material with low thermal conductivity and high glass transition temperature. Basic physical properties, thermal physical properties, mechanical properties have been studied. For validating space environment resistance of polyimide foam, outgassing in vacuum, thermal cycle, total dose radiation, thermal vacuum and atomic oxygen tests have been performed. The apparent core density of this foam is as low as 7.5 ± 0.5 kg m−3. Its volume percentage of open cells is over 98%, which is beneficial to outgas in orbit. Coefficient of thermal expansion is less than 40 × 10–6 K−1 in the temperature range from − 170 to 135 ℃. Thermal conductivity in vacuum increases from 2.7 to 42.3 mW (m K)−1 with temperature rising from – 130 to 135 ℃. After severe space environment tests, thermal conductivity becomes even lower, compressive strength raises slightly, but shear property declines apparently. Covered with polyimide film, polyimide foam can resist atomic oxygen erosion effectively. Therefore, the polyimide foam is superior thermal insulation material for space application, which is ideal for satellite structure.

Abstract:ZnO/CuNi‐polyimide composite films show remarkable AO and irradiation durability, sufficient electrostatic dissipation capacity, and mechanical robustness. The unique interfacial architecture regulation by multi‐technology integration shows potential for aerospace applications and deployment. Polyimides externally deployed in spacecraft or satellites extensively have various aerospace hazards, including atomic oxygen (AO) erosion, irradiation degradation, and electrostatic charge/discharge (ESC/ESD). To cope with these challenges, we fabricate a ZnO/CuNi‐polyimide composite film with augmented permanence. Using spectroscopy and microscopy techniques, we have shown that the combination of chelation and cross‐linking in the interfacial architecture leads to enhanced interfacial compatibility and mechanical robustness. Besides, due to the positive AO diffusion barrier ability of the wurtzite ZnO, our composite film shows remarkable AO resistance and a very small Ey value of 6.88 × 10−26 cm3/atom, which is merely 2.29% of that of pristine polyimide. Moreover, the well‐defined nanocrystalline state with minimal lattice swelling (0.3%–0.7%) of the Fe+‐irradiated ZnO/CuNi‐polyimide at a damaging dose of 353.4 dpa demonstrates its excellent irradiation resistance. Finally, the ZnO/CuNi‐polyimide also shows sufficient electrostatic dissipation capacity to cope with the ESC/ESD events. Our fabrication approach for composite films based on multi‐technology integration shows potential for aerospace applications and deployment.

Abstract:Foam-filled composite sandwich structures have demonstrated superior thermal insulation performance, making them highly suitable for cryogenic tanks in launch vehicles. This study focused on the cryogenic insulation characteristics of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) fluted-core sandwich panels filled with polyimide foam. The fluted-core sandwich panel was simplified into a homogeneous multilayer plate to establish a one-dimensional heat transfer theoretical model. This model was used to predict steady-state temperature approximate solutions by linearizing the temperature-dependent thermal conductivity. The sandwich specimens were fabricated using an integrated forming co-cured method. Self-developed cryogenic insulation experiment and finite element simulations were conducted to acquire temperature distributions and validated the precision of the theoretical model. Results showed that the specimens achieved insulation temperature difference exceeding 143.05 °C, with effective thermal conductivity reaching 0.0326 W/(m·°C), significantly lower than that of CFRP. The temperature distributions along the thickness direction displayed a nonlinear increasing trend. The cryogenic thermal short effect was noticeable at the junction of the bottom facesheet and web. An analysis of geometric parameter influences revealed that increasing the short span, core height, or reducing web thickness could enhance thermal insulation characteristics with minimum effective thermal conductivity of 0.0276 W/(m·°C) and lead to a more uniform distribution of bottom temperatures with minimum temperature difference of 3.30 °C. These findings provide a foundational analysis for designing cryogenic insulation structures.

Abstract:Polyimide foam (PIF) is a rising star in high-end applications such as aerospace thermal insulation and military sound absorption. However, the basic rule on molecular backbone design and uniform pore formation of PIF still need to be explored. In this work, polyester ammonium salt (PEAS) precursor powders are synthesized between alcoholysis ester of 3, 3′, 4, 4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDE) and aromatic diamines with different chain flexibility and conformation symmetry. Then, a standard "stepwise heating" thermo-foaming approach is used to prepare PIF with comprehensive properties. A rational thermo-foaming program is designed based on in situ observation of pore formation during heating. The fabricated PIFs have uniform pore structure, and PIFBTDA-PDA shows the smallest size (147 μm) and narrow distribution. Interestingly, PIFBTDA-PDA also presents a balanced strain recovery rate (SR = 91%) and mechanical robustness (0.051 MPa at 25% strain) and its pore structure maintains regularity after 10 compression–recovery cycles, mainly due to high rigidity of the chains. Furthermore, all the PIFs possess lightweight feature (15–20 kg∙m−3), good heat resistance (Tg at 270–340 °C), thermal stability (T5% at 480–530 °C), thermal insulation properties (λ = 0.046–0.053 W∙m−1K−1 at 20 °C, λ = 0.078–0.089 W∙m−1K−1 at 200 °C), and excellent flame retardancy (LOI > 40%). The reported monomer-mediated pore-structure control strategy can provide guidelines for the preparation of high-performance PIF and its industrial applications.

Abstract:Lightweight and flexible polyimide foams (PIFs) with superior thermal and acoustic properties were high demand for advanced aerospace and industrial machinery, however, traditional foams could not offer both satisfactory acoustic and thermal insulation simultaneously. In this study, we successfully developed a new class of flexible PIFs by incorporating hyperbranched polysiloxanes (NH2-HBPSi) into ammonium salt oligomer (PAES) through a thermal foaming process. The complex viscosity, micro-foaming behavior of PAES and cell morphology of the resulting PIFs could be precisely controlled by tuning the ratio of NH2-HBPSi/ODA. Significantly, PIFHBPSi-4, a PIF with a NH2-HBPSi loading of 33.3% and exceptional thermal property (T5% exceeded 480 ℃), exhibited a compressive strength of 149 kPa at room temperature (over 100 times higher than commercial PIFs) and a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 0.375, which is substantially improved compared to previously reported polyimide composites. Additionally, NH2-HBPSi could form a dense oxide layer at high temperature, impeding the transmission of heat. This allowed PIFHBPSi-4 to withstand a 10-minute exposure to high heat flux of 50 kW/m2 without any significant erosion. These lightweight, flexible, thermally resistant, and acoustically superior hybrid PIFs had the potential to revolutionize applications in high-tech fields like aerospace, acoustics, and aviation.

Abstract:A prepolymer foaming composition based on 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride methyl ester and diamines: 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane and m-phenylenediamine for the production of high-temperature polyimide foam (PIF) is proposed. The p ossibility o f u sing P IF a s a b inder f or c omposite materials (foam composites) reinforced with carbon or organic fibers with low density (0.4–1.1 g/cm3) a s a result of foaming of the binder during the formation of the foam composite is shown. The density and mechanical properties of the foam composite can vary within a relatively wide range depending on the volume content of the fiber and air pores. The high glass transition temperature of 260°C, combined with the high thermal stability of carbon or polyimide fibers, contributes to the retention of the mechanical properties of such composites at elevated temperatures. The temperature of the start of mass loss of the foam composite must be at least 550°C, and it depends on the type of fibrous material. The combination of the excellent thermal and mechanical properties of lightweight PIF composites, together with the exceptional fire resistance of polyimide materials, may provide new applications in advanced aircraft and shipbuilding technologies.

Abstract:Closed-cell rigid polyimide foams with excellent thermal stability and combined properties were prepared by thermal foaming of a reactive end-capped polyimide precursor powder in a closed mold. The precursor powder was obtained by thermal treatment of a polyester-amine salt (PEAS) solution derived from the reaction of the diethyl ester of 2,3,3′,4′-biphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydride (α-BPDE) with an aromatic diamine mixture of p-phenylenediamine (PDA) and 2-(4-aminophenyl)-5-aminobenzimidazole (BIA) in the presence of an end-capping agent (mono-ethyl ester of nadic acid anhydride, NE) in an aliphatic alcohol. The effect of polymer mainchain structures on the foaming processability and combined properties of the closed-cell rigid polyimide foams were systematically investigated. The polyimide foams (100–300 kg/m3) with closed-cell rates of 91–95% show an outstanding thermal stability with an initial thermal decomposition temperature of ≥490 °C and a glass transition temperature of 395 °C. Polyimide foams with density of 250 kg/m3 exhibited compression creep deformation as low as 1.6% after thermal aging at 320 °C/0.4 MPa for 2 h.

Abstract:Polyimide aerogels (PIAs) are thermally insulating materials that possess various advantages, such as exceptionally high temperature resistance and low thermal conductivity, which make them great potential candidate materials to be applied in the area of thermal protection. However, under harsh mechanical stresses, the macro- and microscopic structural stability of PIAs may be compromised due to shrinkage/collapse, leading to performance degradation. Herein, we propose a homogeneous organic/inorganic hybrid formation strategy for constructing nanoporous polyimide/silica aerogels (PIAs-A) with exceptional mechanical strength and ultralow thermal conductivity. The results obtained indicate that PIAs-A have an optimal three-dimensional nanoporous network structure with a pore size distribution mainly within the range of 10–20 nm. Monitoring the temperature evolution of the material’s cold surface showed that it remained at a low temperature of 37.5 °C even when the material was placed against a hot surface of 150 °C. The residual mechanical strengths of the aerogels remained at a superior level (with strength degradation being less than 9%) after exposure to ultralow and high-temperature atmospheres. Furthermore, compressive stress values at 3% strain exceeded previously reported values for PIAs by 625 and 733% at −50 and 100 °C, respectively. Meanwhile, our aerogels displayed flame resistance even when exposed to a heat source of approximately 1200 °C, possessed favorable hydrophobic properties, and maintained dimensional stability up to 504 °C. The robust mechanical and thermal insulation properties of PIAs-A make them a promising substitute material for thermal superinsulation in aircraft.

Abstract:Polyimide foams were prepared by single-stage process condensation,and their structure and properties were characterized.The characteristic peaks around 1778 cm-1,1720 cm-1 and 1375 cm-1 of polyimide were observed on FTIR spectrum.The density of polyimide foams was less than 0.30 g/cm3,the LOI was 38% and the mean sound absorption index was 0.42.The glass transition temperature and the initial decomposition temperatures in N2 of polyimide foams were observed to be 262.4℃ and 549.7℃.

Abstract:The rapid growth of the aerospace industry presents significant challenges in developing lightweight and flexible thermal protective materials for spacecraft and related equipment. One longstanding challenge has been the preparation of high-thermostable and highly flexible aerogels, which limits their practical application in flexible thermal protection. In this work, through a rational 'chain-sphere' dual-combination structure design, polyimide-silica aerogels with integrated properties of the adjustable aerogel-fiber skeleton structure, robust flexibility and high thermostable have been prepared. By incorporating 2,2-dimethylbenzidine (DMBZ), we achieve a more solid aerogel network. The aerogel membrane retains its original shape without creases or cracks even after undergoing 500 folding and unfolding tests. Additionally, the silicon nanoparticles surrounding the aerogel exhibit superior performance at high temperatures. The unique structure and components of the composite enable it to possess lightweight (0.075–0.11 g/cm −3 ), low thermal shrinkage (300°C∼6 %), excellent thermostability (95 % weight retention at 474°C∼557°C), and promising thermal insulating performance below 600°C. The integrated performances of the aerogel make it suitable for high-temperature thermal protection applications that require both efficient thermal insulation and robust flexibility.

Abstract:Advance in thermosetting polyimide and its composites were reviewed.In the last forty years,many kinds of endcap reagent were fund to synthesis polyimide resin matrix for composites,and most of polyimide was endcaped by Nadic anhydride or PEPA anhydride.Many series of polyimide resin were developed to the service in 280-450℃ for aeroengine.Low-cost polyimide,high toughness polyimide and organic/inorganic hybrid polyimide will be the main directions of polyimide study in the future.

Abstract:The weak inherent non-covalent interactions between carbon aerogel backbone nanoparticles obtained by the pyrolysis of conventional organic aerogel can lead to poor mechanical properties. When applied in the thermal protection system of a high-speed spacecraft, the preparation of carbon aerogel insulation materials with excellent formability and high mechanical strength still remains a huge challenge. This work reports an efficient approach for fabricating carbon foam-reinforced carbon aerogel composites by compounding the nanoporous polyimide aerogel into the microporous pre-carbonized phenolic resin-based carbon foam via vacuum impregnation, gelatinizing and co-carbonization. Benefiting from the co-shrinkage caused by co−carbonization, the thermal insulation capacity of the carbon aerogel and the formability of the pre−carbonized foam are efficiently utilized. The shrinkage, density and carbon yield of aerogels, pre-carbonized foams and the composites at different temperatures were measured to analyze the formation of the interfacial gap within the composite. The co-carbonization mechanism of the polyimide aerogels and phenolic resin-based pre-carbonized foams was analyzed through XPS, TG-MS, and FT-IR. Among the prepared samples, CF30-CPI-1000 °C with small interfacial gaps showed the lowest thermal conductivity, which was as low as 0.56 W/(m·K) at 1900 °C, and the corresponding compressive strength and elastic modulus were as high as 0.532 MPa and 9.091 MPa, respectively.

Fabrication of Lightweight Polyimide Foams with Exceptional Mechanical and Thermal Properties

Abstract:Lightweight polyimide foams (PIFs) with exceptional thermal resistance and compressive properties are fabricated by heating polyester ammonium salts (PEASs) which are prepared by copolymerizing 4, 4'-diaminobenzanilide (DABA), 4, 4'-diaminodiphenyl methane (MDA) and 3, 3', 4, 4'-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA). Hydrogen bonds are formed between CONH and CO in the PI chains due to the addition of DABA and the melt viscosity of PEAS precursors increase with increasing content of DABA, which is advantageous to bind the foaming gases for cell expansion. The expansion ratio of PEAS precursors is increased from 633% to 1133% when the molar ratio of MDA/DABA is changed from 10:0 to 6:4. The compressive strength and modulus of PIFM9D1 (i.e., the molar ratio of MDA/DABA is 9:1, foam density: 120.8 kg m-3 ) reach as high as 0.59 and 15.0 MPa, respectively. The PIFs possess prominent thermal performance with the initial thermal degradation temperatures (under both nitrogen and air atmosphere) and glass transition temperatures (as assessed by DSC and DMA) exceeding 511 and 292 °C, respectively. The thermal conductivity of PIFs is lower than 0.049 W m-1 K-1 , which exhibits promising applications for serving as high-temperature thermal insulation materials in the fields of aerospace, marine, and nuclear sectors among others.
Molecularly and Structurally Designed Polyimide Nanofiber Radiative Cooling Films for Spacecraft Thermal Management

Abstract:This study presents a polyimide nanofiber radiative cooling film (RCF) designed for spacecraft thermal management. By tailoring molecular structures and optimizing diameter and orientation of nanofibers, the RCF achieves remarkable solar reflectivity (99.6%) and mid‐infrared emissivity (0.93). The films show excellent stability against ultraviolet radiation, atomic oxygen, and temperature fluctuations, offering a novel strategy for advanced spacecraft thermal management materials. Radiative cooling films (RCFs) are crucial for spacecraft thermal management, but their optical performance is currently limited by their structures and intrinsic high absorption at short wavelengths. In this study, a novel RCF using electrospun polyimide nanofibers optimized at both the molecular and microscale levels is developed. The newly designed polyimide molecules significantly decrease visible and ultraviolet (UV) light absorption while maintaining excellent thermal radiation properties in the infrared spectrum. By optimizing the diameter and orientation of the nanofibers using Monte Carlo simulations, the resulting film achieves a solar reflectivity of 99.6% and a mid‐infrared emissivity of 0.93. Its physical structures and optical properties remain stable under exposure to UV light, atomic oxygen, and extreme temperature changes. Further vacuum radiative cooling tests reveal that the thermal equilibrium temperature of this film is approximately 28 °C lower than that of Kapton‐based RCFs currently used in spacecraft. These results provide a new approach for creating efficient thermal management materials for space applications, with potential for broader use in architecture, electronic devices, and outdoor equipment.

Abstract:Abstract Polyimides, high-performance polymers with superior properties such as high temperature stability, resistance to solvents and high strength, can be used in high-tech applications of the aerospace and aviation, medical or electronics industry in different forms (film, fiber, nanofiber, membrane, foam, adhesive or coating). Among these applications, coating has a special place and is used to develop advanced structures having high temperature resistance, flame retardancy and etc. for high tech industries via an economical and feasible way. Therefore, in this review, we aimed to report the broad application status of polyimide coatings by reviewing publications, patents and commercial products. Thus, this study can assist in selecting suitable polyimide types and production methods for polyimide coating applications and in understanding their applicability for future products.
Polyimide-Silica Hybrid Aerogels with High Mechanical Strength for Thermal Insulation Applications

Abstract:ABSTRACT High performance polyimides have been widely investigated as materials with excellent thermal, mechanical, and electronic properties due to their highly rigid structures. Aspen has developed an approach to prepare polyimide aerogels which have applications as low dielectric constant materials, separation membranes, catalyst supports and insulation materials. In this paper, we will discuss the preparation of polyimide-silica hybrid aerogel materials with good mechanical strengths and low thermal conductivities. The polyimide-silica hybrid aerogels were made by a two-step process and the materials were characterized to determine thermal conductivity and compressive strength. Results show that compressive moduli of the polyimide-silica hybrid aerogels increase dramatically with density (power law relationship). Thermal conductivity of the aerogels is dependent on the aging conditions and density, with the lowest value achieved so far being ~12 mW/m-K at ambient conditions. The relationship between aerogel density and surface area, thermal stability, porosity and morphology of the nanostructure of the polyimide-silica hybrid aerogels are also described in this paper.

Fabrication of multifunctional polyimide foams with co-polymerized benzimidazole moieties for excellent thermal insulation and flame retardancy applications

Abstract:In this study, heterocyclic diamine 2-(4-aminophenyl)-5-aminobenzimidazole (APBIA) was employed as a co-polymerization component to improve the properties of polyimide foams (PIFs) which were synthesized from 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA) and 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA). The rheological behavior of polyester ammonium salt (PEAS) precursors was regulated by introducing APBIA moieties to the chain backbones, which affected the foaming behavior of PEAS and the microstructure of corresponding PIFs. Anisotropic porous structure was constructed with the help of microwave-assisted foaming strategy due to the directional growth of foam pores, which led to anisotropic mechanical and thermal insulation performance of resultant PIFs. PIFs demonstrated robust mechanical performance in the vertical direction (i.e., parallel to pore growth direction) and mechanical flexibility (compression response rate of 97.1–99.0 %) in the horizontal direction (i.e., perpendicular to the pore growth direction). The co-polymerized PIFs also presented excellent thermal insulation performance, with thermal conductivity ranging from 0.0266 to 0.0517 W/(m·K) within a temperature range of 25∼300 °C. In addition, PIFs exhibited exceptional thermal stability and flame retardancy performance, which demonstrate a great potential for high-temperature thermal protection applications. To summarize, multifunctional PIFs with excellent mechanical, thermal insulation and flame retardancy were successfully prepared by adopting co-polymerization strategy and microwave-assisted foaming technique, which have promising applications in high-end engineering sectors.
