Abstract:In this work, a combined system including FLC high‐speed polarization rotator, liquid crystal polymerizable polarization grating, FLC switchable Dammann Grating is proposed to form tunable diffractive spot matrices and acquire depth information. By adjusting electric field, the grating can be switched between diffractive state showing 4 by 4 optical spots arrays in two areas and non‐diffractive state, respectively. At a low driving voltage of 5V, our approach renders the gratings electrically tunable with a fast response time of 50μs, which has the potential for LiDAR applications.

Abstract:Since the discovery of the Bragg’s law in 1913, Bragg gratings have become important optical devices and have been extensively used in various systems. In particular, the successful inscription of a Bragg grating in a fiber core has significantly boosted its engineering applications. However, a conventional grating device is usually designed for a particular use, which limits general-purpose applications since its index modulation profile is fixed after fabrication. In this article, we propose to implement a fully reconfigurable grating, which is fast and electrically reconfigurable by field programming. The concept is verified by fabricating an integrated grating on a silicon-on-insulator platform, which is employed as a programmable signal processor to perform multiple signal processing functions including temporal differentiation, microwave time delay, and frequency identification. The availability of ultrafast and reconfigurable gratings opens new avenues for programmable optical signal processing at the speed of light.

Abstract:A ready-assemble and parallel polarization-optical logic processor is developed, which is based on the birefraction of uniaxial crystals. The suggested processor is a stacked integration of calcite plates for beam splitting and combination and polarization rotators for polarization direction control. All 16 logic functions of two input patterns can be implemented by customizing a control panel. It is compact in structure, effective in performance and insensitive to environmental influences.

Abstract:Optical computing is highly desired as a potential strategy for circumventing the performance limitations of semiconductor-based electronic devices and circuits. Optical logic gates are considered as fundamental building blocks for optical computation and they enable logic functions to be performed extremely quickly without the generation of heat and crosstalk. Here, we discuss the design of a multi-functional optical logic gate based on an on-chip diffractive optical neural network that can perform AND, NOT and OR logic operations at the wavelength of 1.55 μm. The wavelength-independent operation of the multi-functional logic gate at seven wavelengths (over a bandwidth of 60 nm) is also studied which paves the way for wavelength division multiplexed parallel computation. This simple, highly-integrable, low-loss, energy-efficient and broadband optical logic gate provides a path for the development of high-speed on-chip nanophotonic processors for future optical computing applications.

The processes of beam recording, firing, and reproduction are described and an implementation scheme for 1D and 2D shuffle is also proposed The results of proof-of-principle experiments in one and two dimensions are also presented. Abstract:Azobenzene dyes have large refractive index near their main resonance, but the poor figure of merit (FOM) limits their potential for all-optical applications. To improve this situation, disperse red 1 (DR1) molecules were dispersed in a sol-gel germanium/Ormosil organic-inorganic hybrid matrix. Z-scan measurement results showed a good compatibility between the dopant and the matrix, and also, an improved FOM was obtained as compared to the DR1/polymer films reported previously. To demonstrate the all-optical signal processing effect, a cw Nd:YAG laser emitting at 532 nm and a He-Ne laser emitting at 632.8 nm were used as pump and probe beams, respectively. DR1 acts as an initiator of the photo-induced transient holographic grating, which is attributed to the trans-cis-trans photoisomerization. Thus, a three inputs AND all-optical logic gate was achieved by using choppers with different frequencies. The detailed mechanism of operation is discussed. These results indicate that the DR1 doped germanium/Ormosil organic-inorganic hybrid film with an improved FOM has a great potential in all-optical devices around its main resonance.

Abstract:This paper proposes a unique configuration for an all-optical D Flip Flop (D-FF) utilizing a quasi-square ring resonator (RR) and T-Splitter, as well as NOT and OR logic gates within a 2-dimensional square lattice photonic crystal (PC) structure. The components realizing the all-optical D-FF comprise of optical waveguides in a 2D square lattice PC of 45 × 23 silicon (Si) rods in a silica (SiO2) substrate. The utilization of these specific materials has facilitated the fabrication process of the design, diverging from alternative approaches that employ an air substrate, a method inherently unattainable in fabrication. The configuration underwent examination and simulation utilizing both plane-wave expansion (PWE) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methodologies. The simulation outcomes demonstrate that the designed waveguides and RR effectively execute the operational principles of the D-FF by guiding light as intended. The suggested configuration holds promise as a logic block within all-optical arithmetic logic units (ALUs) designed for digital computing optical circuits. The design underwent optimization for operation within the C-band spectrum, particularly at 1550 nm. The outcomes reveal a distinct differentiation between logic states '1' and '0', enhancing robust decision-making on the receiver side and minimizing logic errors in the photonic decision circuit. The D-FF displays a contrast ratio (CR) of 4.77 dB, a stabilization time of 0.66 psec, and a footprint of 21 μm × 12 μm.

Abstract:This paper reviews recent advancements in all-optical memory components, particularly focusing on various types of all-optical flip-flops (FFs) based on photonic crystal (PC) structures proposed in recent years. PCs, with their unique optical properties and engineered structures, including photonic bandgap control, enhanced light-matter interaction, and compact size, make them especially suitable for optical FFs. The study explores three key materials, silicon, chalcogenide glass, and gallium arsenide, known for their high refractive index contrast, compact size, hybrid integration capability, and easy fabrication processes. Furthermore, these materials exhibit excellent compatibility with different technologies like CMOS and fiber optics, enhancing their versatility in various applications. The structures proposed in the research leverage mechanisms such as waveguides, ring resonators, scattering rods, coupling rods, edge rods, switches, resonant cavities, and multi-mode interference. The paper delves into crucial properties and parameters of all-optical FFs, including response time, contrast ratio, and operating wavelength. Optical FFs possess significant advantages, such as high speed, low power consumption, and potential for integration, making them a promising technology for advancing optical computing and optical memory systems.

Abstract:Based on the double refraction of crystals as well as the self programming dual-rail encoding and space variant logic control unit, two kinds of space variant optical logic processors were constructed, and their schematic diagrams were shown. They are compact in structure, stable, flexible and convenient in practical uses. The experimental results are also shown. It can be seen in principle that the above mentioned space variant optical logic processor can easily perform the space invariant logic operation too.

Abstract:In this work, programmable optical switching integrated chips for 4-bit binary true/inverse/complement optical code conversions (OCCs) are proposed based on fluorinated photopolymers. Fluorinated bis-phenol-A novolac resin (FAR) with low absorption loss and fluorinated polyacrylate (FPA) with high thermal stability are self-synthesized as core and cladding layer, respectively. The basic architecture of operating unit for the photonic chip designed is composed of directional coupler Mach-Zehnder interferometer (DC-MZI) thermo-optic (TO) switching, X-junction, and Y-bunching waveguide structures. The waveguide module by cascading 16 operating units could realize OCCs function through optical transmission matrix. The response time of the 4-bit binary OCCs is measured as about 300 µs. The insertion loss and extinction ratio of the actual chip are obtained as about 10.5 dB and 15.2 dB, respectively. The electric driving power consumption for OCCs is less than 6 mW. The true/inverse/complement OCCs are achieved by the programmable modulation circuit. The proposed technique is suitable for achieving optical digital computing system with high-speed signal processing and low power consumption.
Tunable Diffraction Grating Using Ultraviolet-Light-induced Spatial Phase Modulation in Dual-Frequency Liquid Crystal

Abstract:An electrically tunable diffraction phase grating using ultraviolet (UV)-light-induced spatial dielectric modulation of a dual-frequency liquid crystal (DFLC) cell is demonstrated. A photomask with transparent and opaque stripes was used for fabricating the grating. In the UV-exposed stripes, the negative dielectric anisotropy (Δε) tolane compound of the DFLC mixture is partially polymerized resulting in a decreased threshold voltage as compared to that of the unexposed region. Upon applying a constant voltage, the phase difference between the adjacent pixels is produced. The first-order diffraction efficiency reaches ∼60% which agrees well with the simulation results. Due to the dual-frequency addressing at 30Vrms, the response time of the DFLC phase grating was measured to be ∼1ms at room temperature.

Abstract:Direct laser writing is demonstrated by two‐photon polymerization of multi‐element diffractive optical components that can be switched on and off with an applied voltage. By exploiting the 3D capabilities of the laser microfabrication technique, multiple diffractive optical elements are written into a single liquid crystal (LC) layer. The switching behavior of the diffractive optical elements is controlled by simply changing the write‐voltage of the anisotropic polymer structures during fabrication. Initially, 2D diffraction gratings are written at different depths within the LC layer. Each element is then activated by applying a voltage of sufficient amplitude that causes the second diffractive optical element to become inactive. This is then followed by a demonstration of multi‐element computer generated holograms that are written at different depths within the LC layer. By altering the magnitude of the applied voltage, different images/patterns can be observed in the replay field using a simple electrode configuration. These compact and transmissive LC optical components could excel in applications where a degree of switchability is required but a highly pixelated fully programmable device is excessive. This paper demonstrates switchable multi‐component diffractive optical elements in polymerizable liquid crystal devices. These switchable elements have been fabricated at different depths within the liquid crystal layer using two‐photon polymerization direct laser writing. By changing the voltage amplitude applied to the liquid crystal device, different computer generated holograms can be accessed resulting in different images in the replay field.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a novel, scalable, and reconfigurable optical switch that performs multiple computational logic functions simultaneously. The free-carrier depletion effect is used to perform non-volatile switching operations due to its high speed and low power consumption. We adopt the concept of optical memory using a phase-change material to realize the non-volatile reconfigurability without a constant power supply, in addition to providing a large operating bandwidth required for reconfigurability. The proposed reconfigurable optical logic architecture is realized in a compact microdisk resonator configuration, utilizing both the carrier-depletion-based modulation and phase-change optical memory. This is the first time these two modulation schemes are implemented in the same optical microdisk for the purpose of reconfigurable optical logic.

Abstract:Liquid-crystal fork gratings are demonstrated through photopatterning realized on a DMD-based microlithography system. This supplies a new strategy for generating fast switchable, reconfigurable, wavelength-tolerant and polarization-insensitive optical vortices.
