Abstract:The modified signed-digit (MSD) number system satisfies the requirements of totally parallel addition using identical units and enables the addition of any two numbers in three sucessive steps. We show a simple and compact design of the parallel optical addition module based on MSD number representation using Boolean polarization-encoded logic algebra (BPLA). The four transforms of MSD addition are ex- pressed mathematically and the realization of the transform module us- ing liquid crystal devices (LCDs) are also given. © 1996 Society of Photo- Optical Instrumentation Engineers.

Abstract:In this paper, an optical half adder is designed using photonic crystals. One of the features of this half adder is its small size. In the design of this structure, it has been tried to have a small size, shorter delay and high contrast ratio so that it can be used in the design of optical integrated circuits. For the sum and carry outputs, the obtained contrast ratio in the designed half adder is 15.4 dB and 7.4 dB, respectively. In addition, the proposed structure has a size of 70 μm 2 . The small size of this structure and the use of simple point defects, have caused the maximum delay time of this structure to be reduced to 0.07 ps. Due to these characteristics, this structure is suitable for high-speed optical integrated circuits.

Abstract:In this paper an all-optical half adder has been designed on a 2D photonic crystal slab having air holes in a hexagonal lattice pattern. The working principal of the device is based on beam interference. Multi-mode interference based Pi phase shifter been used in this design. Neither any nonlinear materials nor any extra bias signal has been incorporated in the structure. Plain wave expansion and Finite Difference Time Domain methods have been used for analyzing the band diagram of the structure and performance of the proposed device respectively. The SUM port provides 60%, 67%, and 1% transmittance whereas the CARRY port provides 4%, 1%, and 90% transmission for {0,1}, {1,0}, and {1,1} logic combinations respectively. Minimum contrast ratio has been obtained as 18 dB in SUM port and 12.5 dB in CARRY port. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed all-optical adder would be a potential candidate for future generation photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:In this paper we are going to propose a novel optical structure that can work as an optical combined half adder/subtractor. The proposed structure has 3 output ports. O1 is the common output port for adder and subtractor which can work as the sum/difference port of the proposed structure. O2 is the carry port of the optical adder and O3 is the borrow port of the optical subtractor. The working mechanism of the proposed structure is based on threshold switching, therefore three nonlinear ring resonators were combined with some optical waveguides. The maximum rise time of the proposed structure is 3 ps.

Abstract:The use of optical devices for high-speed data transmission has been considered for some time. Structures which can be used in optical integrated circuits are very important. Photonic crystals have been used as basic structures in the design of optical devices and especially logic devices. Considering the ability of these structures to design logic gates and circuits, it is expected to use them as base structures in the design of optical integrated circuits. In this research, an optical half-adder using two-dimensional photonic crystals was designed and simulated. One of the features of this circuit is the higher power difference in the high and low logic modes, which reduces errors in detecting these two values in the output. The circuit also has the ability to use the optical gates XOR and AND. In addition, it has a small structure that makes it suitable for use in optical integrated circuits.

Abstract:In this paper, we are going to propose and design an all optical half adder based on photonic crystal structures. For realizing the proposed structure, we will use two nonlinear resonant cavities inside a two-dimensional photonic crystal structure. Nonlinear resonant cavities will be created by replacing the ordinary rods via defect rod made of nonlinear material such as doped glass. Plane-wave expansion and finite difference time domain methods will be used for simulating the proposed structure. For the proposed structure, the maximum delay time is about 3 ps.

Abstract:This paper had designed and simulated new structures for realizing half-adder and half-subtractor based on a linear photonic crystal. For this purpose, first, some individual gates such as AND and XOR are proposed, and then by combining these gates in a single structure a half- adder and half-subtractor are performed. All the simulations are performed with the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The transient analysis of the structures shows that the response time of the proposed half-adder and half-subtractor are 0.27 ps and 0.19 ps, respectively. The total footprint of the final structures is also as little as 90.3 μm2\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$\mu m^{2}$$\end{document} and the contrast ratio in a worse case is7.2 dB. The simulation results demonstrate the new structures have a considerably small size, ultrafast response time, and suitable contrast ratio in comparison with some previous works. Having these features make the introduced devices really usable for integration in the ultrafast optical integrated circuits.

Abstract:In this paper, a half adder was designed based on two-dimensional photonic crystals with small dimensions and a simple structure. Half adders are an important component of logic circuits, thus, designing a high-performance half adder can improve the function of computational circuits. In addition to the dimensions and simplicity of the structure, speed and accuracy were also considered in the design of this half adder. The respective proximity of the state outputs 0 and 1 of this circuit to zero exponentiation and the maximum exponentiation value has led to a significant distance between the two values of reasonable 0 and 1. cylindrical dielectric rods were employed in the air field. This half adder was designed to be utilized in the widely-used telecommunication frequency of 1550 nm. All computations are performed for TM mode and through using the finite difference methods in the domain of time (FDTD). The designed structure size was , which is suitable for optical integrated circuits.

Compact All-Optical Half Adder Based on Topology Optimization

Abstract:We proposed an inverse-designed compact half adder on a silicon-on-insulator platform with a footprint of 2µm×2µm. The optical power of SUM and CARRY is controlled by different input combinations, according to the truth table of a half adder. Topology optimization is applied to cope with multiple objective functions in such a combinational logic circuit. The transmittance at 1550 nm for CARRY with 11 input is 170.2%, with extinction ratios (ERs) of 27.1 and 5.8 dB for SUM and CARRY, respectively. The SUM and CARRY outputs have ERs over 22.0 dB and 5.7 dB from 1515 nm to 1600 nm. Phase condition and morphology analysis show that the device has high tolerance on phase fluctuation and fabrication. The proposed device with compact footprint, low insertion loss, and large bandwidth presents a novel, to the best of our knowledge, approach to achieve all-optical combinational logic circuits with inverse design.

Abstract:In this paper, the implementation of an integrated system of half adder and half subtractor based on 2D Si-air photonic crystal is proposed. The structure includes two input ports, one control port, and two output ports. When light is absent in the control port, the structure operates as a half adder and when light is present in the control port, it functions as a half subtractor. The operation of the structure is based on the phenomenon of constructive and destructive interference of light waves. The novelty of the proposed structure is that using a single control signal, both half adder and half subtractor operations can be realized. Since no nonlinear material has been used to design the structure, the power consumption of the structure is very low. Another advantage of the structure is that same materials have been used for all the rods which makes the fabrication process easier. The structure has been simulated by utilizing PWE and FDTD methods. Different performance parameters such as contrast ratio, rise time, delay time, fall time, response time, and bit rate for the designed structure have been obtained as 14.78 dB, 0.25 ps, 0.3 ps, 0.11 ps, 0.44 ps, and 2.27 Tb/s respectively. Due to its high contrast ratio, fast response time, high bit rate, and smaller dimension, the designed structure can be a promising candidate for realizing high speed optical integrated circuits.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel design of an all-optical half-adder (HA) based on two two-ring resonators in a two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal (PC) structure without nonlinear materials is proposed. The all-optical HA comprises AND and XOR gates where each gate is composed of cross-shaped waveguides and two-ring resonators in a 2D square-lattice PC that are filled with silicon (Si) rods in silica (SiO2). The AND and XOR gates are analyzed and simulated using plane-wave expansion (PWE) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods. Simulation results show that light guiding inside the device functions as AND and XOR gates. Thus, the proposed device has the potential for use in optical arithmetic logic units for digital computing circuits. The structure comprises an optical AND gate and an optical XOR gate that were designed to work at the C-band spectrum. Results show that there is a clear distinction between logic states 1 and 0 with a narrow power range that leads to a better robust decision on the receiver side for minimized logic errors in the photonic decision circuit. Thus, the proposed HA can be a key component for designing a photonic arithmetic logic unit.

Abstract:An all-optical half adder has been achieved successfully by using gain nonlinearity characteristics of cross-gain modulation in quantum-dot semiconductor optical amplifier. In this design, no additional input beam is required, which is simpler and more compact compared to designs based on two or more interferometer switches. By optimizing the geometry of the multimode interference area to manipulate the position of the imaging point, a power splitter with an arbitrary splitting ratio is achieved, fulfilling the system's splitting requirements. The pattern effect, contrast ratio and output extinction ratio at different splitting ratios are compared. The effect of key parameters on the Q factor is compared and analyzed. The results demonstrate that the scheme can realize all-optical half adder with logical correctness and a high Q factor. Through parameter optimization, the Q factor can be improved by about 9 dB than the other half adders based on QD-SOA.

Abstract:Nanophotonic arithmetic circuits requiring cascaded Boolean operations are difficult to implement due to loss and footprint issues. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate plasmonic half-subtractor and demultiplexer circuits based on transmission-lines. Empowered by the unique polarization selectivity in the surface plasmon modal behaviors, both circuits are realized without cascading. The operations of the half-subtractor and demultiplexer can be performed using a single laser beam with three predefined linear polarizations. All of our experiments are performed using a 56 fs laser providing greater than 12.5 THz optical bandwidth. The experimental results are found in excellent quantitative accordance with numerical calculations. The photonic integrated circuit framework proposed in this work could pave the future avenue towards the realization of highly compact, multi-functional, on-chip integrated photonic processors.

Abstract:The advanced technological development of photonics is very rapid compared to other technologies. Photonic crystal (PC)-based combinational and sequential circuits are most widely used for photonic integrated circuits. In this paper, we have mainly focused on the adder where the output is a pure function of the present input only. A half adder is a type of adders, which adds two binary digits and gives an output plus a carry value. The half adder contains two input ports and two output ports as sum and carry. In this attempt, two-dimensional (2D) PCs-based half adders that are designed either square or triangular lattice using various mechanisms with different materials are presented here. The adders are most widely used in program counters, digital instruments and in microcontrollers.

Abstract:Ultracompact chip-integrated all-optical half- and full-adders are realized based on signal-light induced plasmonic-nanocavity-modes shift in a planar plasmonic microstructure covered with a nonlinear nanocomposite layer, which can be directly integrated into plasmonic circuits. Tremendous nonlinear enhancement is obtained for the nanocomposite cover layer, attributed to resonant excitation, slow light effect, as well as field enhancement effect provided by the plasmonic nanocavity. The feature size of the device is <15 μm, which is reduced by three orders of magnitude compared with previous reports. The operating threshold power is determined to be 300 μW (corresponding to a threshold intensity of 7.8 MW/cm2), which is reduced by two orders of magnitude compared with previous reports. The intensity contrast ratio between two output logic states, “1” and “0,” is larger than 27 dB, which is among the highest values reported to date. Our work is the first to experimentally realize on-chip half- and full-adders based on nonlinear plasmonic nanocavities having an ultrasmall feature size, ultralow threshold power, and high intensity contrast ratio simultaneously. This work not only provides a platform for the study of nonlinear optics, but also paves a way to realize ultrahigh-speed signal computing chips.

Abstract:Today communication needs huge operational speed. This will be accomplished in case the conventional carrier of data, i.e. electron is supplanted by a photon for gadgets based on switching and logic. Gates are the basic building pieces of advanced frameworks. Different logic and arithmetic operations can be done using this gate. Optical logic and arithmetic operations are exceptionally much anticipated in high-speed communication frameworks. In this paper, we have presented parallel models to perform the addition of two binary digits based on terahertz optical asymmetric demultiplexer (TOAD)/semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-assisted Sagnac gates. Using only two TOAD-based switches we have designed a parallel half adder. This optical circuit increases the speed of calculation and is also capable of synthesizing light as an input to form the output. The most advantage of this parallel circuit is that no synchronization is required for distinctive inputs. The circuit is hypothetically planned and confirmed by numerical simulations.

Abstract:By exploiting the phenomena of optical switching, different logical and arithmetic operations can be performed. This paper presents a novel optimized design structures to perform addition and subtraction of two binary digits using electro-optic effect based Mach–Zehnder interferometer operating at 1460 nm in the S band. The proposed structures are numerically simulated and designed using beam propagation method and MATLAB software. The different performance parameters like extinction ratio, contrast ratio, insertion loss, amplitude modulation and relative eye opening have been evaluated and the optimized structure yields maximum ER of 33.22 dB and 28.76 dB for half adder and half subtractor respectively. Additionally, a comparison of the proposed structures is presented with the previously designed structures.

Abstract:We demonstrate experimentally the dual beam optical drive of an interconnect-free 2-input, 2-output 1-bit adder implemented inside a single gold plasmonic cavity, focused ion milled in an ultrathin single crystalline gold microplate. To obtain this result, we have set a coherent 2-beam excitation scheme up that allows us to independently and arbitrarily choose the intensity, polarization, and relative phase shift of two femtosecond-pulsed laser spots. The spots are focused on any chosen location of the micrometer-sized plasmonic cavity. The nonlinear photoluminescence (NPL) response of the cavity encodes the Boolean output, while the Boolean inputs are borne by the linear polarizations of the excitation. A generic map analysis tool is developed to pinpoint the realized Boolean functions and to assess their robustness. This tool is used to demonstrate the experimental implementation of the elusive XOR gate and its combination with an AND gate in the same cavity to perform the full 1-bit adder. The analysis of 160,000 instances of the 1-bit adder clearly shows the soundness of our approach and reveals some underlying mechanistic features of the remotely generated NPL. These results establish the first practical step of a general approach to cascade-free all-optical arithmetic and logic units.
