Abstract:Bismuth sulfide nanorods were synthesized in ionic liquid using bismuth nitrate and thiourea as precursor. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), high-resolution electron microscope (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show that the well crystallized bismuth sulfide nanorods can be obtained at 160 degrees C under refluxing condition. The growth mechanism of nanorods was also discussed.

Abstract:Ternary bismuth oxyhalide crystalline nanobelts (such as Bi24O31Br10, Bi3O4Br, Bi12O17Br2, BiOCI, and Bi24O31Cl10) and nanotubes (such as Bi24O31Br10) have been synthesized by using convenient hydrothermal methods. The composition and morphologies of the bismuth oxyhalides could be controlled by adjusting some growth parameters, including reaction pH, time, and temperature. All the nanostructures were characterized by using various methods including X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution TEM, electron diffraction, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The possible reaction mechanism and growth of the crystals are discussed based on the experimental results.

Abstract:A facile solution-phase process has been demonstrated for the selective preparation of single-crystalline bismuth nanowires and nanospheres by reducing sodium bismuthate with ethylene glycol in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) or acetone. Bismuth nanobelts and Bi/Bi2O3 nanocables could be also obtained by changing some reaction parameters. Various techniques such as XRD, EDXA, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, and FT-IR have been used to investigate the physical characteristics of these low-dimensional bismuth nanostructures.

Abstract:Single-crystalline and well-dispersed barium strontium titanate (Ba1−xSrxTiO3, x=0–1, BST) nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized in a shape- and composition-controlled manner using a facile solvothermal route. The microstructure and composition of the as-synthesized samples were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). All the samples were identified as cubic perkovsite phase by XRD. The average particle sizes, morphologies and compositions of all the as-synthesized samples significantly depend on the Ba/Sr molar ratio in the initial reactants. The particle size gradually increases and the morphology ranges from irregular sphere to cube as the strontium proportion increases in the BST. It has also been found that, in all cases, strontium is more readily incorporated into the BST nanocrystals compared with barium. Further experiments display that highly dispersed BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 nanocrystals could also be obtained with an acceptable crystallinity at room temperature by this solvothermal method.

Abstract:High-aspect-ratio, single crystal BaMoO4 nanofibers with diameters of about 30 nm and lengths up to 30 μm were synthesized in cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) reverse microemulsions. The effects of different conditions such as the aging time, the molar ratio of water to surfactant (w), the reactant and CTAB concentration on the evolution of single crystal BaMoO4 nanofibers were discussed. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and electron diffraction were used to characterize the morphology and the crystal structure of the prepared nanostructured BaMoO4 obtained at different conditions.

Abstract:A new method has been developed to synthesize barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution under ambient conditions at room temperature. The as-prepared BaTiO3 nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution TEM, and selected area electron diffraction. On the basis of the characterizations, it was found that the particle size could be easily tuned by adjusting the experimental parameters, such as the solvent component and reaction time. The basicity of the organic solvent was considered to play an important role in the room-temperature synthesis and the solvent molecules had a strong influence on the crystal growth of BaTiO3 nanoparticles. The BaTiO3 nanoparticles obtained were well dispersed and possessed a cubic perovskite structure at room temperature.

Abstract:Large scale and homogeneous bunched lead molybdate nanobelts were synthesized via a vertically supported liquid membrane system in the presence of ethylenediamine at room temperature. The typical bunched nanobelts were of length of ca. 300–500 μm, the width of ca. 230–280 nm and the thickness of ca. 90–110 nm. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed that all the obtained PbMoO 4 crystals belonged to tetragonal structure. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the positioning of the two compartments in the SLM system, modifier additive and reacting time, highly affect the morphologies and sizes of PbMoO 4 crystals. Room-temperature emission spectra of PbMoO 4 were investigated and the relative photoluminescence intensity of 400 nm was intensified in PbMoO 4 nanobelts. A possible growth mechanism is proposed.

Abstract:Bi2S3 nanofibers with a diameter less than 10 nm and lengths ranging from 400 to 1000 nm were successfully prepared by a convenient solution route at 90 °C by using BiCl3 and thiourea as the starting materials. The product was characterized by XRD, XPS, and TEM techniques. It was found that anionic surfactant C17H33COOK played an important role in controlling the morphology of the product. The formation of the nanofibers could be well explained by the accordion-like folding mechanism.

Abstract:Bismuth with rod-like shape was prepared by refluxing an aqueous dispersion of spherical colloids. The spherical colloids of bismuth were generated by reducing bismuth nitrate with ascorbic acid in the presence of cethyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and ethylene diamine tetraacetic (EDTA). The mixed solution was refluxed at temperature of 60 similar to 70 degrees C for about 5 hours to get bismuth nanorods with a diameter about 10 similar to 30 nm. Experimental results showed that this method could facilitate the growth of these rod-like nanomaterials. Various techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected-area-electron diffraction (SAED), and x-ray diffraction (XRD) have been used to characterize the nanorods.

Abstract:Several one-dimensional nanomaterials(wires and rods) of BaCO3, were synthesized in the presence of the nonionic w/o micro-emulsions of Tween-80, Triton X-100 and C12E9. The intermediate and middle course of BaCO3 nanowires formation were captured, and the formation mechanism of the one-dimensional nanomaterials was conjectured as directional aggregation of BaCO3 colloid particles controlled by soft microemulsion template.
Controlled Synthesis of Basic Bismuth Nitrate by Reverse Microemulsion

Abstract:Basic bismuth nitrate (BBN) with different shapes and dimensionalities were controllably synthesised in reverse microemulsion stabilised by TritonX-100. The obtained products were characterised by thermogravimetry differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The XRD and TG-DSC detections revealed that the as-prepared BBN had the composition Bi6O6(OH)(2)(NO3)(4)center dot 2H(2)O. The TEM results indicated that 1D nanorods, 2D hexagonal nanoplates and irregular nanosheets of BBN were obtained by changing the water content (w, molar ratio of water to surfactant). At low w, most of the products were nanorods with 100-200 nm in diameter and 3-7 mu m in length. Hexagonal nanoplates with the side length of 250-350 nm were formed at higher w. When w further increased to 10, irregular nanosheets with 2-8 mm in size were found. The morphology of products was also sensitive to the surfactant concentration and reaction time. It was found that the growth of BBN nanoplates is a function of time. The possible formation mechanism of these nanostructures was also discussed.

Abstract:Bi2Se3 nanobelts with a typical width of 20–80nm, thickness of 8–10nm and length of several micrometers have been successfully synthesized. Synthesis was carried out using a simple co-reduction method under ultrasonic irradiation for 15h at room temperature. The product was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron diffraction (ED), and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results indicate that the Bi2Se3 nanobelts are well-crystallized nanocrystals and grow along the (001) direction. The morphology and size of the nanostructures vary with synthesis temperature. A possible formation mechanism of Bi2Se3 nanobelts is proposed.

Abstract:A direct and simple surfactant- and template-free route has been developed for the controlled synthesis of Sb2O3 belt-like microstructures. By adjusting the reactant ratio between SbCl3 and urea under solvothermal reaction conditions, broom-like belts and rods of Sb2O3 have been successfully prepared. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has been used to characterize the phases and morphologies of the as-prepared products. Abstract:At room temperature, two different morphological nanoscaled BiOxF3−2x (BiOF nanosheets and Bi26O38F2 nanorods) have been prepared via a simple solution-based route in the presence of diethanolamine (DEA) and NaOH. The compositions and morphologies of bismuth oxyfluoride can be selectively prepared by varying the type of additives. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-disperse X-ray analysis (EDXA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS). A possible mechanism was introduced to explain the formation of the products.

Abstract:The synthesis of the multi-component transition-metal diboride (MeB2) solid-solution powders has been recently attracting considerable attentions. However, the synthesis of the ternary or more component MeB2 solid-solution powders has rarely been reported until now. To fabricate the ternary MeB2 solid-solution powders, herein we utilized two kinds of the ternary MeB2 solid solutions as prototypes, namely (Hf1/3Zr1/3Ti1/3)B-2 (HZTB) and (Ta1/3Nb1/3Ti1/3)B-2 (TNTB). The formation possibility of HZTB and TNTB was first analyzed by the first-principles calculations and then we attempted of fabricated them by a simple molten salt synthesis technique. The first-principles calculations results showed that the mixing Gibbs free energy at room temperature and lattice size difference at 0 K of HZTB and TNTB were (1.666 kJ/mol and 3.146%) and (-3.030 kJ/mol and 1.254%), respectively. This suggested that TNTB solid solution was more prone to being fabricated than HZTB solid solution. The experimental results showed the high purity TNTB solid-solution nanopowders were successfully synthesized by the molten salt synthesis technique at 1373 K with 30% excessive B as precursors while the HZTB solid solution was not able to be synthesized by the molten salt synthesis technique. The as-synthesized TNTB solid-solution nanopowders exhibited the distinguished nanorod morphology with the diameters of 20-40 nm and lengths of 100-200 nm. Meanwhile, they possessed the good single-crystal hexagonal structure and high compositional uniformity from nanoscale to microscale. In addition, their formation mechanism associated to the possible chemical reactions was well interpreted by the thermodynamics analysis.

Abstract:A synthesis approach for shape control of single crystalline Bi nanostructures has been developed. By controlling the molar ratio of PVP and Bi in a polyol process, Bi nanocubes with an edge length of approximately 60-80 nm, triangular nanoplates with an edge length of 200-500 nm, and nanospheres with an average diameter of 75 nm have been successfully synthesized. In the same synthetic process, Bi nanobelts with lengths of up to 80 microm and widths of up to 0.6 microm were synthesized in large quantities by introducing a trace amount of Fe3+ species into the reaction system. These single crystalline nanostructure Bi materials are expected to find potential applications in a variety of areas including high efficiency thermoelectric devices.
