Abstract:The preparation of zeolite ZSM-5 without using a template was extensively investigated. Zeolite ZSM-5 small particle aggregates were synthesized in the absence of a template using sodium silicate as the silica source and by controlling the nucleation time at high temperature with a simple two-step method in a rotating autoclave on a spit within an oven. The first stage at higher temperature consisted of accelerating the nucleation and the second stage at lower temperature consisted of obtaining small crystals in the absence of a template. The resulting zeolites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, ammonia temperature-programmed desorption, and N2 adsorption. Compared with the micron-sized zeolite crystals that are synthesized in the one-step method, zeolite ZSM-5 small particles prepared by the two-step method have a higher specific surface area and an equivalent acid site content. The sample synthesized by the two-step method mainly contains Brönsted acid sites and a few Lewis acid sites indicating that Al is incorporated into the framework of the zeolite.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous structures have been fabricated using colloidal zeolite silicalite nanocrystals as building blocks. Continuous, uniform, optically transparent and self-standing silicalite membranes with well-defined shapes and controlled mesoporosity were obtained by self-assembly of zeolite nanocrystals followed by high-pressure compression and controlled secondary crystal growth via microwave treatment. The thickness of the compact self-standing membranes is tunable from 20 μm to several millimeters by simply using different surface weight densities. Controlled secondary growth via microwave treatment leads to a stronger self-standing membrane with controlled mesoporosity and has little effect on its thickness, crystallinity, micropore surface area and micropore volume.
Surface Patterned Porous Films by Convection-Assisted Dynamic Self-Assembly of Zeolite Nanoparticles.

Abstract:This study demonstrates for the first time that porous zeolite films with surface patterns such as knotted-rope web and wrinkled honeycomb can be obtained by convection-assisted dynamic self-assembly of zeolite nanoparticles. The study also shows that an appropriate dispersant and the presence of zeolite nanoparticles with a specific range of particle sizes in the colloidal suspension are critical for pattern formation. The patterned zeolite films have a well-defined bimodal pore size distribution (i.e., 0.55 and 2.6 nm) with a high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 680-750 m(2)/g and are attractive for potential applications in fields such as thin film catalysis, adsorption separation, chemical sensor arrays, and components in microelectronic devices.

Abstract:Surface patterns of porous zeolite structures such as knotted-rope web and wrinkled honeycomb were obtained by dynamic self-assembly of zeolite nanoparticles during solvent evaporation of colloidal zeolite suspension. The study shows that extra ethanol in zeolite synthesis solution is crucial for pattern formation. The addition of ethanol helps produce zeolite nanoparticles with a specific range of particle size during the hydrothermal synthesis. It also provides uniform dynamic driving force for pattern formation during its preferential evaporation. In addition, surface patterns vary with suspension compositions. The patterned zeolite structures have a well-defined bimodal pore size distribution (i.e., 0.55 nm and 2.6 nm) with high BET surface area of 680∼750m2&/g.

Abstract:This paper reviews the synthesis of nanosized silicalite-1,ZSM-5,TS-1,beta,A and Y zeolite.Low-temperature hydrothermal crystallization is the ideal approach for obtaining discrete zeolite colloids with crystal size of less than 100 nm.Other methods,such as confined-space crystallization,peso-solid phase crystallization etc.are also possible for obtaining zeolites with nanosized particles.Dispersed nanosized zeolites have typical colloidal properties such as high external surface area,abundant surface hydroxyl and self-aggregation properties.Zeta potential of colloidal zeolites changes with pH,zeolite composition,crystal size,and structures.The nanozeolites possessed some unique physico-chemical properties which are different from those of the large crystal zeolites.With high dispersibility and abundant surface hydroxyls,nanozeolites are perfect building blocks in nano-assembly technology.Using the assembly properties of nanozeolites,various hierarchical structured zeolite materials have been successfully fabricated.In some of the applications in catalyst field,nanosized zeolites also have the merits of high activity,long lifetime and special selectivity.

Abstract:The encapsulation of functional colloidal nanoparticles (100 nm) into single‐crystalline ZSM‐5 zeolites, aiming to create uniform core‐shell structures, is a highly sought‐after yet formidable objective due to significant lattice mismatch and distinct crystallization properties. In this study, we demonstrate the fabrication of a core‐shell structured single‐crystal zeolite encompassing an Fe3O4 colloidal core via a novel confinementstepwise crystallization methodology. By engineering a confined nanocavity, anchoring nucleation sites, and executing stepwise crystallization, we have successfully encapsulated colloidal nanoparticles (CN) within single‐crystal zeolites. These grafted sites, alongside the controlled crystallization process, compel the zeolite seed to nucleate and expand along the Fe3O4 colloidal nanoparticle surface, within a meticulously defined volume (1.5 × 107 ≤ V ≤ 1.3 × 108 nm3). Our strategy exhibits versatility and adaptability to an array of zeolites, including but not restricted to ZSM‐5, NaA, ZSM‐11, and TS‐1 with polycrystalline zeolite shell. We highlight the uniformly structured magnetic‐nucleus single‐crystalline zeolite, which displays pronounced superparamagnetism (14 emu/g) and robust acidity (~0.83 mmol/g). This innovative material has been effectively utilized in a magnetically stabilized bed (MSB) reactor for the dehydration of ethanol, delivering an exceptional conversion rate (98%), supreme ethylene selectivity (98%), and superior catalytic endurance (in excess of 100 hours).

Abstract:Zeolite beta, silicalite-1, ZSM-5, and TS-1 coated spheres have been prepared successfully through layer-by-layer assembly of nanozeolite/ polymer multilayers on polystyrene (PS) microspheres, and hollow zeolite spheres have been obtained by removal of the core by calcination. In the adsorption process of nanozeolites onto the polvelectrolyte-modified template spheres, it has been found that zeta potential of the zeolite colloidal solution that determines the electrostatic interaction has important effects on the zeolite adsorption procedure. The charge on the original sphere template is not necessary. because proper polyelectrolyte modification could change the surface property of the template and make it suitable for layer-by-layer adsorption. The influences of zeolite type and/or size (40-120 nm), the number of zeolite/poly(diallyl-dimethlammonium) layer pairs, and the template sphere size (0.53-10.3 mum) on the preparation of the hollow zeolite spheres were also discussed.
Synthesis of Aggregate ZSM-5 Zeolite with Nucleation Gel in the Absence of Organic Template

Abstract:The effect of nucleation gel on the preparation of aggregate ZSM-5 zeolite was studied under rotating autoclaves free from the organic structure-directing agent. The influence of the nucleation gel on the crystallization rate and particle size was investigated in detail. The physicochemical properties of the products were characterized by using XRD, SEM, and N-2 adsorption. The results indicate that the crystallization rate of the ZSM-5 zeolite is increased by the addition of the nucleation gel. The crystallization time with 33.3wt% nucleation gel is 24 h while that without nucleation gel is 48 h. When 33.3wt% nucleation gel is added, after crystallization at 150 degrees C for 24 h, the average size of the aggregate is increased from 5.5 mu m to 26.3 mu m, and the specific surface area is increased from 292 m(2).g(-1) to 394 m(2).g(-1). The mechanism for the crystal growth of the aggregate zeolite ZSM-5 without organic template by the nucleation gel method is also discussed in this work.

Abstract:Micro-sized crystals of mesoporous zeolite NaA (meso-NaA) are prepared and their mechanical strength is compared with conventional NaA crystals. Crystals are characterized by nitrogen adsorption, X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy and dynamic light scattering. It is found that micro-sized meso-NaA crystals composed by numerous domains of interconnected nanocrystals can be easily smashed by hand-grinding, showing lower mechanical strength than conventional crystals. The suspension of zeolite NaA nanocrystals (similar to 110 nm) can be easily obtained after removing micro-sized crystals by centrifuging the suspension of the grinded crystals at 1000 rpm and can be used to seed hollow fiber supports. Zeolite membranes with high separation performance are obtained on the seeded hollow fiber supports by seeded growth. This method may open a new way to prepare zeolite nanocrystals for many applications. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Zeolite nanocrystals (nanozeolites) represent a hot topic in the domain of porous materials due to their controllable colloidal character, short diffusion path and large and adjustable surface. In the first part of this chapter, various hierarchical assembly strategies including template-directed (such as polymer, carbon, mesoporous silica and bio-templates) and template-free methods as well as the construction of micro/mesoporous composite have been reviewed in detail. Although there is still a long way to go for commercialization and adapting these newly born materials in industrial processes, the application of the nanozeolite and their hierarchical assemblies have shown their potentials with some of the emerging, exciting examples in catalysis and biology. The recent progress of the application of nanozeolites and their hierarchical assemblies are summarized in the second part. Finally, a prospect of the nanozeolitic materials on the hierarchical assembly and application is envisaged which is aimed to provide a brief guidance to the readers.

Abstract:In this paper, the colloidal properties of nanosized zeolites with MFI and BEA topology structure were investigated. It is found that ζ potential of nanosized zeolites varied with the change of zeolite structures and composition. The influences of salt concentration and pH value on the ζ potential of the nanosized zeolites have been studied. With the increase of the salt concentration, the ζ potential gradually decreased and even possessed opposite charges. The effects of ζ potential on the colloidal aggregation and stability are also detected. A cretain ζ potential is necessary to stabilize the zeolite colloid, while too low ζ potential may bring on aggregation of the colloid. At stuitabie temperature, nanozeolite can be self-assembled by capillary force to form transparent self-standing fibers. The crystal size significantly influences the character of the products. The zeolites with smaller crystal size are rather apt to form long, dense and transparent zeolite fibers.

Abstract:Organized mesoporous thin films of nanotextured anatase were prepared by hydrolysis of TiCl4 in the presence of poly (alkylene oxide) block copolymer EO20PO70EO20, acting as templates under non-aqueous conditions. The samples were characterized by thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy(AFM) and N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm. The results show that the pores are uniform with large mesoporous diameter about 10 nm and BET specific surface area of the film is 150 m(2)(.)g(-1). The thick inorganic wall significantly enhances the stability of the porous structure. The physical and chemical changes in sol-gel have been analyzed through IR spectrometry. Structure directing mechanism of EO20PO70EO20 has also been discussed elementarily.
Synthesis of β Zeolite Using Tetraethylammonium Bromide Together with Fluoride as Composite of Template (II) - Studies on Crystallization Process of β Zeolite

Abstract:The crystallization process of β zeolite has been investigated by using FT-IR, XRD, TG, SEM, and ICP-AES. The samples were obtained by hydrothermal synthesis at 140 °C and chemical composition of the mixture used for synthesis can be expressed as n(Al2O3) : n(SiO2) : n(TEABr) : n (Na2O) : n(NaF) : n(H2O) : n [(NH4)2O] = 1 : 25 : 7. 5 : 2. 5 : 3. 75 : 550 : 6. 25. The crystallization curve of zeolite β exhibits a typical S-shaped characteristic. The typical framework IR-absorptions at 567 and 518 cm-1 have different natures. The former is detected at the beginning of induction period and its intensity changes a little in induction period, but exhibits a direct correlation with crystallinity in growth period. The latter is not detected in the induction period, but exhibits the same trend in growth period. The large amorphous SiO2-Al2O3 particles which are visible at the beginning of crystallization change into small grains during the induction period. n(SiO2)/n(Al2O3) ratio of the solid phases obtained at different synthesis time changes significantly during the induction period, but changes a little in growth period. So the β zeolite crystal nucleus are formed via liquid-phase synthesis mechanism. A typical gel in synthesis of β zeolite is transformed initially into a solid, which contains richer aluminium, minor F- and occluded TEA species. The aluminosilicate gel particles are dissolved by F- during the induction period and the transition complex, which has a specific weak X-ray diffraction peak at 2θ = 22. 8° and specific DTG pattern, is formed at the turning point from induction period to growth period. During the growth period Si and Al transport from the liquid to the solid phase at almost the same rates. F- anion has greater influence on the formation and turning of transition complex.
Role of Subcolloidal (nanosized) Precursor Species in the Early Stage of the Crystallization of Zeolites in Heterogeneous Systems

Abstract:A critical analysis was carried out for the purpose of understanding the role of subcolloidal (nanosized) (alumino)silicate precursor species in the early stage of crystallization of zeolites in heterogeneous systems (hydrogels). The formation and evolution of these subcolloidal species in both the solid and the liquid phases were investigated by various experimental methods such a scanning electron microscopy (SEM, FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, particle size analysis, pH measurement, atomic absorption spectroscopy, and dynamic light scattering, after careful separation of intermediates from reaction mixture by two-step centrifugation treatment. The results revealed that a chain of processes (i) the formation of low-molecular-weight (LMW) silicate species, by dissolution of Al-enriched amorphous silica, and their aggregation into about 3 nm sized primary precursor species (PPSs), (ii) the formation of larger (∼3 to ∼15 nm sized) silicate precursor species (LSPSs) by a rapid aggregation/coalescence of PPSs, (iii) the formation of "gel" (primary amorphous precursor) by a random aggregation of LSPSs at room temperature, and (iv) the formation of the worm-like particles (secondary amorphous precursor) occurred in the solid phase during heating of the reaction mixture (hydrogel) from room temperature to 170 °C. It is interesting that almost the same processes occur in the liquid phase but with decreased rate according to the relative low concentration of LMW silicate species. With the above described findings, it is highly expected that the manipulation of crystallization pathway through controlling the formation/evolution of precursor species in the initial stage of the process can be achieved.
Template Removal and Surface Modification of an SSZ-13 Membrane with Heated Sodium Chloride for CO 2 /CH 4 Gas Separation

Abstract:Hydrothermal synthesis with an organic template of N,N,N trimethyl-1-adamantammonium hydroxide (TMAdaOH) is the most commonly used method to prepare an SSZ-13 zeolite membrane. In this paper, the synthesized membrane was treated in heated sodium chloride to remove TMAdaOH instead of calcination in air. The surface of the membrane was modified by the heated NaCl and resulted in an improved CO2/CH4 gas separation selectivity. TMAda+ in the channels of SSZ-13 zeolite decomposed completely, and the treatment time was shortened significantly compared with calcination in air. The recrystallization of zeolite reacting with heated NaCl was the possible reason for the improved gas separation performance of the membrane.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The colloidal dispersion containing the nanosized zeolites with the MFI topology has been successfully prepared. A pre-aging process of the mother gel at 80°C for 24 h before the crystallization was important for the formation of the nanosized zeolites. We have also found that silicalite-1 nanocrystals av. 62 nm in size were formed by the addition of acidic amino acids into the mother gel. The particle size of the zeolites can be controlled ranging from 62 to 530 nm by changing the amount of water, aging process, crystallization time and temperature and the addition of organic molecules. Furthermore, nanosized titanium silicalite-1 (TS-1) with the size of 50-130 nm has been successfully synthesized by the addition of a Ti source into the synthesis gel of the silicalite-1 nanocrystals. The nanosized TS-1 exhibits a higher catalytic activity in the epoxidation of cyclohexene than the microsized ones. Finally, we demonstrate the preparation of thin films of the silicalite-1 and TS-1 nanocrystals onto a silicon substrate by a dip-coating technique.

Abstract:Nano-tin dioxide/NaY zeolite composite material was prepared by impregnation of SnCl2 solution on NaY zeolite and subsequently calcination was done at 623–973 K. The morphology and the particle size of SnO2 formed on the external surface of the zeolite, and the adsorption properties and components of the composed material were characterized with SEM, TEM, HRTEM, nitrogen adsorption and EDX, respectively. The morphology of the SnO2 nano-crystals is strongly dependent on the temperature of calcination. The uniform discrete SnO2 nano-single crystal rods of size 60 × 12 nm and the cone like nano-crystallites grow in the temperature range of 773–873 K and of 623–673 K, respectively. The mechanism of the formation and growth of SnO2 nano-crystals is discussed based on the adsorption data and the contents of Cl and Sn of the composite materials calcined at various temperatures. The composite material possesses the adsorption behavior of zeolite open and perfect channel system, and presents linear hydrogen-sensitivity demonstrated with conductivity measurement.

Abstract:Various nanozeolites microspheres with uniform diameters from 3 to 8 mu m were prepared by a polymerization-induced colloid aggregation method. The obtained nanozeolite microspheres possess a regularly spherical morphology and a large and adjustable secondary pore architecture that are believed to be useful in the separation of biomolecules. Moreover, the nanozeolite microspheres well retain the properties of the original colloidal nanozeolites and exhibit similar advantages to those of zeolite nanoparticles in protein adsorption. More importantly, the large secondary pore size (15-70 nm) of nanozeolite microspheres has been proven to have little limiting effect on the adsorption rate of various proteins, and a saturated adsorption is achieved even within 10 min, which may also facilitate microspheres' applications in catalysis involving diffusion limitations.
