Abstract:Recently, we proved the Griffiths conjecture on the boundedness of the period maps, and then used it to prove global Torelli theorem on the Torelli space under certain natural conditions. This paper serves as a review of these results and an introduction to the main ideas behind the proofs.

Abstract:This paper contains several results concerning circle action on almost-complex and smooth manifolds. More precisely, we show that, for an almost-complex manifold $M^{2mn}$(resp. a smooth manifold $N^{4mn}$), if there exists a partition $\lambda=(\lambda_{1},...,\lambda_{u})$ of weight $m$ such that the Chern number $(c_{\lambda_{1}}... c_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[M]$ (resp. Pontrjagin number $(p_{\lambda_{1}}... p_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[N]$) is nonzero, then \emph{any} circle action on $M^{2mn}$ (resp. $N^{4mn}$) has at least $n+1$ fixed points. When an even-dimensional smooth manifold $N^{2n}$ admits a semi-free action with isolated fixed points, we show that $N^{2n}$ bounds, which generalizes a well-known fact in the free case. We also provide a topological obstruction, in terms of the first Chern class, to the existence of semi-free circle action with \emph{nonempty} isolated fixed points on almost-complex manifolds. The main ingredients of our proofs are Bott's residue formula and rigidity theorem.

Abstract: We prove a conjecture of Griffiths on simultaneous normalization of all periods which asserts that the image of the lifted period map on the universal cover lies in a bounded domain in a complex Euclidean space. As an application we prove that the Teichm\"uller spaces of a large class of projective manifolds have complex affine structures.

Abstract:We study a parametric family of piecewise rotations of the torus, in the limit in which the rotation number approaches the rational value 1/4. There is a region of positive measure where the discontinuity set becomes dense in the limit; we prove that in this region the area occupied by stable periodic orbits remains positive. The main device is the construction of an induced map on a domain with vanishing measure; this map is the product of two involutions, and each involution preserves all its atoms. Dynamically, the composition of these involutions represents linking together two sector maps; this dynamical system features an orderly array of stable periodic orbits having a smooth parameter dependence, plus irregular contributions which become negligible in the limit.

Abstract:This paper deals with the dynamics of linear Hamiltonian systems which have almost periodic Hamiltonians and symplectic phase transitions over almost periodic lattices. By introducing some discrete skew-product dynamical systems based on certain joint hulls of Hamiltonians and lattices, it will be proved that such a system admits a well-defined rotation number, which gives a global, topological understanding on the motion of these systems in symplectic groups and manifolds of Lagrangian planes.

Abstract:Translation and rotation numbers have played an interesting and important role in the qualitative description of various dynamical systems. In this exposition we are especially interested in applications which lead to proofs of periodic motions in various kinds of dynamics on the annulus. The applications include billiards and geodesic flows. Going beyond this simple qualitative invariant in the study of the dynamics of area preserving annulus maps, G.D. Birkhoff was led to the concept of “regions of instability” for twist maps. We discuss the closely related notion of instability sets for a generic area preserving surface diffeomorphism and develop their properties.

Periodic points of rational area-preserving homeomorphisms

Abstract:An area-preserving homeomorphism isotopic to the identity is said to have rational rotation direction if its rotation vector is a real multiple of a rational class. We give a short proof that any area-preserving homeomorphism of a compact surface of genus at least two, which is isotopic to the identity and has rational rotation direction, is either the identity or has periodic points of unbounded minimal period. This answers a question of Seyfaddini and can be regarded as a Conley conjecture-type result for symplectic homeomorphisms of surfaces beyond the Hamiltonian case. We also discuss several variations, such as maps preserving arbitrary Borel probability measures with full support, maps not isotopic to the identity, and maps on lower genus surfaces. The proofs of the main results combine topological arguments with periodic Floer homology.

Abstract:We prove that for a torus homeomorphism isotopic to the identity and with a lift whose rotation set is an interval, either every rational point in the rotation set is realized by a periodic orbit, or there exists an annular, essential, periodic set. In the latter case we give a qualitative description of the dynamics.

Abstract:In this paper, we study multi-rotation orbits on the unit circle. We obtain a natural generalization of a classical result which says that orbits of irrational rotations on the unit circle are dense. It is possible to show that this result holds true if instead of iterating a single irrational rotation, one takes a multi-rotation orbit along a finitely recurrent sequence over finitely many different irrational rotations. We also discuss some connections between the box dimensions of multi-rotation orbits and Diophantine approximations. In particular, we improve a result by Feng and Xiong in the case when the rotation parameters are algebraic numbers.

Linearizations of periodic point free distal homeomorphisms on the annulus

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{A}$ be an annulus in the plane $\mathbb R^2$ and $g:\mathbb{A}\rightarrow \mathbb{A}$ be a boundary components preserving homeomorphism which is distal and has no periodic points. In \cite{SXY}, the authors show that there is a continuous decomposition $\mathcal P$ of $\mathbb{A}$ into $g$-invariant circles such that all the restrictions of $g$ on them share a common irrational rotation number (also called the rotation number of $g$) and all these circles are linearly ordered by the inclusion relation on the sets of bounded components of their complements in $\mathbb R^2$. In this note, we show that if the decomposition $\mathcal P$ above has a continuous section, then $g$ can be linearized, that is it is topologically conjugate to a rigid rotation on $\mathbb{A}$. For every irrational number $\alpha\in (0, 1)$, we show the existence of such a distal homeomorphism $g$ on $\mathbb{A}$ that it cannot be linearized and its rotation number is $\alpha$.

Abstract:The exact monotone twist map of infinite cylinders in the Birkhoff region of instability is studied. A Variational method based on Aubry-Mather theory is used to discover infinitely many non-Birkhoff periodic orbits of fixed rotation number sufficiently close to some irrational number for which the angular invariant circle does not exist.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to extend the results associated with periodic orbits from two-dimensions to higher-dimensions. Because of the one-to-one correspondence between solutions for the monotone recurrence relation and orbits for the induced high-dimensional cylinder twist map, we consider the system of solutions for monotone recurrence relations instead. By introducing intersections of type ( k , l ), we propose the definition of generalized Birkhoff solutions, generalizing the concept of Birkhoff solutions. We show that if there is a ( p , q )-periodic solution which is not a generalized Birkhoff solution, then the system has positive topological entropy and the Farey interval of p / q is contained in the rotation set.

Abstract:In this paper, we will introduce the rotation number for the one-dimensional asymmetric p-Laplacian with a pair of periodic potentials. Two applications of this notion will be given. One is a clear characterization of two unbounded sequences of Fučik curves of the periodic Fučik spectrum of the p-Laplacian with potentials. With the help of the Poincaré–Birkhoff fixed point theorem, the other application is some existence result of multiple periodic solutions of nonlinear ordinary differential equations concerning with the p-Laplacian.

Abstract:In this paper we use the rotation number approach to the periodic and anti-periodic eigenvalues to establish a relationship between the periodic, anti-periodic eigenvalues and certain two-point eigenvalues. Then we give some applications of such a relation to stability of Hill's equations, resonance regions of parameterized Hill's equations, and nonuniform nonresonance of semilinear nonautonomous differential equations.

Abstract:Characterizing existence or not of periodic orbit is a classical problem, and it has both theoretical importance and many real applications. Here, several new criterions on nonexistence of periodic orbits of the planar dynamical system are obtained and by examples shows that these criterions are applicable, but the known ones are invalid to them. Based on these criterions, we further characterize the local topological structures of its equilibrium, which also show that one of the classical results by Andreev (Am Math Soc Transl 8:183–207, 1958) on local topological classification of the degenerate equilibrium is incomplete. Finally, as another application of these results, we classify the global phase portraits of a planar differential system, which comes from the third question in the list of the 33 questions posed by A. Gasull and also from a mechanical oscillator under suitable restriction to its parameters.

Abstract:A holomorphic endomorphism of $\mathbb{CP}^n$ is post-critically algebraic if its critical hypersurfaces are periodic or preperiodic. This notion generalizes the notion of post-critically finite rational maps in dimension one. We will study the eigenvalues of the differential of such a map along a periodic cycle. When $n=1$, a well-known fact is that the eigenvalue along a periodic cycle of a post-critically finite rational map is either superattracting or repelling. We prove that when $n=2$ the eigenvalues are still either superattracting or repelling. This is an improvement of a result by Mattias Jonsson. When $n\geq 2$ and the cycle is outside the post-critical set, we prove that the eigenvalues are repelling. This result improves one which was already obtained by Fornaess and Sibony under a hyperbolicity assumption on the complement of the post-critical set.
