Abstract:Over a smooth and proper complex scheme, the differential Galois group of an integrable connection may be obtained as the closure of the transcendental monodromy representation. In this paper, we employ a completely algebraic variation of this idea by restricting attention to connections on trivial vector bundles and replacing the fundamental group by a certain Lie algebra constructed from the regular forms. In more detail, we show that the differential Galois group is a certain ``closure'' of the aforementioned Lie algebra. This is then applied to construct connections on curves with prescribed differential Galois group.

Abstract:We construct a covariant functor from a category of Abelian principal bundles over globally hyperbolic spacetimes to a category of *-algebras that describes quantized principal connections. We work within an appropriate differential geometric setting by using the bundle of connections and we study the full gauge group, namely the group of vertical principal bundle automorphisms. Properties of our functor are investigated in detail and, similar to earlier works, it is found that due to topological obstructions the locality property of locally covariant quantum field theory is violated. Furthermore, we prove that, for Abelian structure groups containing a nontrivial compact factor, the gauge invariant Borchers-Uhlmann algebra of the vector dual of the bundle of connections is not separating on gauge equivalence classes of principal connections. We introduce a topological generalization of the concept of locally covariant quantum fields. As examples, we construct for the category of principal U(1)-bundles two natural transformations from singular homology functors to the quantum field theory functor that can be interpreted as the Chern class and the electric charge. In this case we also prove that the electric charges can be consistently set to zero, which yields another quantum field theory functor that satisfies all axioms of locally covariant quantum field theory.

An exploration of connections and curvature in the presence of singularities

Abstract:We develop the notions of connections and curvature for general Lie-Rinehart algebras without using smoothness assumptions on the base space. We present situations when a connection exists. E.g., this is the case when the underlying module is finitely generated. We show how the group of module automorphism acts as gauge transformations on the space of connections. When the underlying module is projective we define a version of the Chern character reproducing results of Hideki Ozeki. We discuss various examples of flat connections and the associated Maurer-Cartan equations. We provide examples of Levi-Civita connections on singular varieties and singular differential spaces with non-zero Riemannian curvature. The main observation is that for quotient singularities, even though the metric degenerates along strata, the poles of the Christoffel symbols are removable.

Differential Geometry of Manifolds of Figures

Abstract:Finding the conditions for the invariance of geometric objects under the action of transformation groups is one of the main objects of geometric research. Almost Hermitian structures and structures of the Gray — Hervella classification on smooth manifolds are considered in this paper. All arguments are given using invariant Koszul’s calculus. Conditions for the invariance of the Kähler form in type structures are investigated and it is shown that the Kähler form is covariantly constant with respect to the Lie vector field. Conditions for the invariance of the Riemannian metric under the action of a one-parameter group of diffeomorphisms generated by a Lie vector field are studied. A criterion for the invariance of an almost complex structure with respect to the local group of diffeomorphisms generated by the Lie vector field in the class W4 is proved. Conditions for the invariance of an operator of an almost complex structure, a tensor of a Riemannian metric, are proved. It is established that the invariance of the Riemannian structure g implies the invariance of the operator of an almost complex structure for some class of manifolds according to the Gray — Hervella classification, and conditions for the covariant constancy of the Lie form in certain classes of manifolds of dimensions above four were obtained. It is proved that the Lie form is covariantly constant in some classes of the type of dimensions above four.

Poincare Invariance in Discrete Gravity

Abstract:A formulation of discrete gravity was recently proposed based on defining a lattice and a shift operator connecting the cells. Spinors on such a space will have rotational SO(d) invariance which is taken as the fundamental symmetry. Inspired by lattice QCD, discrete analogues of curvature and torsion were defined that go smoothly to the corresponding tensors in the continuous limit. In this paper, we show that the absence of diffeomorphism invariance could be replaced by requiring translational invariance in the tangent space by enlarging the tangent space from SO(d) to the inhomogeneous Lorentz group ISO(d) to include translations. We obtain the ISO(d) symmetry by taking instead the Lie group SO(d + 1) and perform on it Inonu-Wigner contraction. We show that, just as for continuous spaces, the zero torsion constraint converts the translational parameter to a diffeomorphism parameter, thus explaining the effectiveness of this formulation.

Abstract:Lagrangian multiforms provide a variational framework to describe integrable hierarchies. The case of Lagrangian 1-forms covers finite-dimensional integrable systems. We use the theory of Lie dialgebras introduced by Semenov-Tian-Shansky to construct a Lagrangian 1-form. Given a Lie dialgebra associated with a Lie algebra and a collection , , of invariant functions on , we give a formula for a Lagrangian multiform describing the commuting flows for on a coadjoint orbit in . We show that the Euler–Lagrange equations for our multiform produce the set of compatible equations in Lax form associated with the underlying r -matrix of the Lie dialgebra. We establish a structural result which relates the closure relation for our multiform to the Poisson involutivity of the Hamiltonians and the so-called double zero on the Euler–Lagrange equations. The construction is extended to a general coadjoint orbit by using reduction from the free motion of the cotangent bundle of a Lie group. We illustrate the dialgebra construction of a Lagrangian multiform with the open Toda chain and the rational Gaudin model. The open Toda chain is built using two different Lie dialgebra structures on . The first one possesses a non-skew-symmetric r -matrix and falls within the Adler–Kostant–Symes scheme. The second one possesses a skew-symmetric r -matrix. In both cases, the connection with the well-known descriptions of the chain in Flaschka and canonical coordinates is provided.

Abstract:To fully clarify the invariance of the classical Liouville field theory under the Virasoro algebra, we first elucidate in detail the concept of classical anomaly, discuss the occurrence of two symmetry algebras associated to this problem, and provide some new formulae to compute the classical center in a general fashion. We apply this to the study of the symmetries of the free boson in two dimensions. Moving to Liouville, we see how this gives rise to an energy-momentum tensor with non-tensorial conformal transformations, in flat space, and a non-vanishing trace, in curved space. We provide a variety of improvements of the (local) theory, that restore Weyl invariance. With explicit computations, we show that the covariant conservation of the Weyl-invariance-improved energy-momentum tensor is lost, in general, and relate the chosen improvement with the corresponding subset of preserved diffeomorphisms. The non-tensorial transformation rule of the Weyl-invariance-improved energy-momentum tensor in curved space is explicitly back-traced to the Virasoro center.

Abstract:We consider here the category of diffeological vector pseudo-bundles, and study a possible extension of classical differential geometric tools on finite dimensional vector bundles, namely, the group of automorphisms, the frame bundle, the space of connection 1-forms and the space of covariant derivatives. Substential distinctions are highlighted in this generalized framework, among which the non-isomorphism between connection 1-forms and covariant derivatives. Applications not only include finite dimensional examples with singularities, but also infinite dimensional vector bundles.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be the simple Lie algebra of square matrices $(n+1)\times (n+1)$ with zero trace. There are certain relations concerning standard automorphisms that are considered ``folklore". One can find a complete proof of these in Millson and Toledano Laredo's work [Transformation Groups, Vol. 10, No. 2, 2005, pp. 217-254], but said proof is based on topological arguments which are non-trivial. The aim of this work is to verify these relations in an elementary way.

Abstract:Using a almost product structure defined by a spray, we give a necessary and sufficient condition, for a linear connection with vanishing torsion to be Riemannian and, for the semi-simplicity of Lie algebra of projectable vector fields which commute with a spray. We show the equivalence of the semi-simplicity of a finite dimensional Lie algebra to the coincidence of the derived ideal with its algebra, to the interiority of any derivation of the algebra and, to the semi-simplicity of its adjoint representation.

Abstract:In a few recent manuscripts, we used the affine connection to introduce two massless scalar fields in the Einstein-Palatini action. These fields lead to non-metricity. In this article, we will discuss the significance of these fields in inflation and dark energy. We will construct a Lagrangian formalism to include these scalar fields in a theory of gravity coupled with ordinary matter and radiation. We will find that these fields need not to be included in the actions of interacting gauge theories coupled with conserved fermionic vector currents as a part of the connection. The same remains valid for ordinary scalar fields. We can couple the connection-scalars with ordinary matter by adding suitable interaction terms. In this context, we will find that Stokes' theorem leads us to include the right-handed neutrinos in the electroweak theory in curved spacetime even with the Levi-Civita connection. This is required to obtain consistent equations of motion and anomaly-free conserved vector current for the neutrinos. Axial vector currents for different Dirac fields may remain anomalous. The right-handed neutrinos can be useful to explain neutrino oscillation and dark matter. We will also discuss the possibility of introducing massless finite integer spin particles using second rank symmetric traceless tensors with reference to the corresponding little group in flat spacetime. We will show that we can use massless (A,A) type fields in Minkowski space to introduce massless finite integer spin particles.

Abstract:Partial connections are (singular) differential systems generalizing classical connections on principal bundles, yielding analogous decompositions for manifolds with nonfree group actions. Connection forms are interpreted as maps determining projections of the tangent bundle onto the partial connection; this approach eliminates many of the complications arising from the presence of isotropy. A connection form taking values in the dual of the Lie algebra is smooth even at singular points of the action, while analogs of the classical algebra-valued connection form are necessarily discontinuous at such points. The curvature of a partial connection form can be defined under mild technical hypotheses; the interpretation of curvature as a measure of the lack of involutivity of the (partial) connection carries over to this general setting.

Abstract:There is a well known one--parameter family of left invariant CR structures on $SU(2)\cong S^3$. We show how purely algebraic methods can be used to explicitly compute the canonical Cartan connections associated to these structures and their curvatures. We also obtain explicit descriptions of tractor bundles and tractor connections.

Abstract:Let $Q\to M$ be a principal $G$-bundle, and $B_0$ a connection on $Q$. We introduce an infinitesimal homogeneity condition for sections in an associated vector bundle $Q\times_GV$ with respect to $B_0$, and, inspired by the well known Ambrose-Singer theorem, we prove the existence of a connection which satisfies a system of parallelism conditions. We explain how this general theorem can be used to prove the known Ambrose-Singer type theorems by an appropriate choice of the initial system of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://data.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> also obtain new applications, which cannot be obtained using the known formalisms, e.g. a classification theorem for locally homogeneous spinors. Finally we introduce natural local homogeneity and local symmetry conditions for triples $(g,P\stackrel{p}{\to} M,A)$ consisting of a Riemannian metric on $M$, a principal bundle on $M$, and a connection on $P$. Our main results concern locally homogeneous and locally symmetric triples, and they can be viewed as bundle versions of the Ambrose-Singer and Cartan theorem.

Abstract:This paper concerns regular connections on trivial algebraic G-principal fiber bundles over the infinitesimal punctured disc, where G is a connected reductive linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We show that the pull-back of every regular connection to an appropriate covering of the infinitesimal punctured disc is gauge equivalent to a connection of the form X z^{-1}dz for some X in the Lie algebra of G. We may even arrange that the only rational eigenvalue of ad X is zero. Our results allow a classification of regular SL_n-connections up to gauge equivalence.

Abstract:Left-invariant Hermitian and Gauduchon connections are studied on an arbitrary Lie group $G$ equipped with an arbitrary left-invariant almost Hermitian structure $(\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle,J)$. The space of left-invariant Hermitian connections is shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with the space $\wedge^{(1,1)}\mathfrak{g}^\ast\otimes \mathfrak{g}$ of left-invariant 2-forms of type (1,1) (with respect to $J$) with values in $\mathfrak{g}:=\mbox{Lie}(G)$. Explicit formulas are obtained for the torsion components of every Hermitian and Gauduchon connection with respect to a convenient choice of left-invariant frame on $G$. The curvature of Gauduchon connections is studied for the special case $G=H\times A$, where $H$ is an arbitrary $n$-dimensional Lie group, $A$ is an arbitrary $n$-dimensional abelian Lie group, and the almost complex structure is totally real with respect to $\mathfrak{h}:=\mbox{Lie}(H)$. When $H$ is compact, it is shown that $H\times A$ admits a left-invariant (strictly) almost Hermitian structure $(\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle,J)$ such that the Gauduchon connection corresponding to the Strominger (or Bismut) connection in the integrable case is precisely the trivial left-invariant connection and, in addition, has totally skew-symmetric torsion. The almost Hermitian structure $(\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle,J)$ on $H\times A$ is shown to satisfy the \textit{strong Kähler with torsion} condition. Furthermore, the affine line of Gauduchon connections on $H\times A$ with the aforementioned almost Hermitian structure is also shown to contain a (nontrivial) flat connection.
