Comparison of Contact and Non-contact Measurements of Axial Length and Anterior Chamber Depth

Abstract:Purpose To compare the measurements of axial length and anterior chamber depth by A-scan ultrasound and a non-contact device(IOL Master).Methods Axial length and anterior chamber depth have been measured in 190 eyes using a non-contact device(IOL Master)followed by a conventional contact A -scan ultrasound.Results The axial length value were 26.40±2.30 mm with the IOL Master and 26.34±2.22 mm with the A scan ultrasound.There is great correlation between the two measurements(r=0.99.P<0.01).The anterior chamber depth value were 3.65±0.27mm with the IOL Master and 3.94±0.29 mm with the A-scan ultrasound.The value measured with IOL Master was 0.28±0.16 mm smaller than that of A scan.The correlative coefficient of ACD between two methods was 0.83(P<0.01).Conclusion IOL Master is a non contact,accurate,safe and reliable tool for measuring axial length.The correlation between A-scan ultrasound and IOL Master AL measurements was great.The anterior chamber depth assessment should be further evaluated, (Chin J Ophthalmol and Otorhinolaryngology,2006,6:172～173)
