Abstract:Explicit formulas for the positive adjoint matrix and the negative adjoint matrix of the inverse matrix for an invertible matrix over a nonnegative commutative semiring are obtained,and an open problem posed by Poplin and Hartwig is partly solved.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the following automatic adjoint theorem: For any sequence spaces E ( X ) E(X) and F ( Y ) F(Y) , if E ( X ) E(X) has the signed-weak gliding hump property and A A is an infinite matrix which transforms E ( X ) E(X) into F ( Y ) F(Y) , then the transpose matrix A ′ A’ of A A transforms F ( Y ) β F(Y)^\beta into E ( X ) β E(X)^\beta , and for any x ∈ E ( X ) x\in E(X) and T ∈ F ( Y ) β T\in F(Y)^\beta , [ A x , T ] = [ x , A ′ T ] [Ax,T]=[x,A’T] . That is, the adjoint operator of A A automatically exists and is just the transpose matrix A ′ A’ of A A . From the theorem we obtain a class of infinite matrix topological algebras ( λ , μ ) (\lambda ,\mu ) , and prove also a λ \lambda -multiplier convergence theorem of Orlicz-Pettis type. The theorem improves substantially the famous Stiles’ Orlicz-Pettis theorem.

Abstract:Some properties of compound adjoint matrices over commutative rings are considered. It is proved that the compound adjoint matrix of an idempotent (nilpotent, unipotent) matrix over commutative rings is idempotent (nilpotent, unipotent). Smith normal forms of compound adjoint matrices over any commutative ring are discussed. The relation between the rank of a matrix and the rank of its compound adjoint matrix over any commutative ring is given.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is, in the general setting of the adjointable operators on Hilbert -modules, to develop two new tools that can be applied to deal with the positive solutions of certain operator equations, the operator norm and related quantities. Among other things, the positivity of a operator matrix is clarified without any preconditions on its entries, and a generalized version of the mixed Schwarz inequality with a parameter is derived. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the non-triviality of this newly obtained inequality.

Abstract:It is well known that every nonzero von Neumann regular $m\times n$-matrix $A$ over an arbitrary ring $R$ has a nonzero outer inverse $n\times m$-matrix $B$ in the sense that $B=BAB$. Generalizing previous work on von Neumann regular matrices, the matrices having nonzero outer inverses over semiperfect rings are characterized as the matrices having some entry outside the Jacobson radical of $R$. Such matrices over finite semiperfect rings and finite commutative rings are counted, and several applications are given.

Abstract:In this work, the sign distribution for all inverse elements of general tridiagonal H-matrices is presented. In addition, some computable upper and lower bounds for the entries of the inverses of diagonally dominant tridiagonal matrices are obtained. Based on the sign distribution, these bounds greatly improve some well-known results due to Ostrowski (1952) 23, Shivakumar and Ji (1996) 26, Nabben (1999) [21], [22] and recently given by Peluso and Politi (2001) 24, Peluso and Popolizio (2008) 25 and so forth. It is also stated that the inverse of a general tridiagonal matrix may be described by 2n-2 parameters ({θk}k=2n and {φk}k=1n-1) instead of 2n+2 ones as given by El-Mikkawy (2004) 3, El-Mikkawy and Karawia (2006) 4 and Huang and McColl (1997) 10. According to these results, a new symbolic algorithm for finding the inverse of a tridiagonal matrix without imposing any restrictive conditions is presented, which improves some recent results. Finally, several applications to the preconditioning technology, the numerical solution of differential equations and the birth–death processes together with numerical tests are given.

Abstract:Firstly,some characteristics of generalized {1}-inverse of quantale matrixs are given,and the generalized {1}-inverse of quantale matrixs exists when some conditions are satisfied. Secondly,the definition of generalized M-P inverse of quantale matrixs is given. Some properties of generalized M-P inverse of quantale matrixs are studied. Abstract:Given a block triangular matrix $M$ over a noncommutative ring with invertible diagonal blocks, this work gives two new representations of its inverse $M^{-1}$. Each block element of $M^{-1}$ is explicitly expressed via a quasideterminant of a submatrix of $M$ with the block Hessenberg type. Accordingly another representation for each inverse block is attained, which is in terms of recurrence relationship with multiple terms among blocks of $M^{-1}$. The latter result allows us to perform an off-diagonal rectangular perturbation analysis for the inverse calculation of $M$. An example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of our results.

Abstract:In this paper an improvement is obtained of Hadamard's inequality for totally nonnegative matrices: If A = (a(ij)) is an n X n totally nonnegative matrix with a11a22 ... a(nn) not-equal 0, then[GRAPHICS]and the inequality is a strict one when A is totally positive and n greater-than-or-equal-to 3. Then we prove that for an n X n totally nonnegative matrix A, det A = a11a22 ... a(nn) if and only if each diagonal product, except the main diagonal product, of A has a zero entry on it.

Abstract:We prove a new lower bound for the Frobenius norm of the inverse of an non-negative matrix. This bound is only a modest improvement over previous results, but is sufficient for fully resolving a conjecture of Harwitz and Sloane, commonly referred to as the S-matrix conjecture, for all dimensions larger than a small constant.
