Abstract:In this paper we show that the group inverse of a real singular Toeplitz matrix can be represented as the sum of products of lower and upper triangular Toeplitz matrices. Such a matrix representation generalizes “Gohberg–Semencul formula” in the literature.

Abstract:We present a stability analysis of Gohberg–Semencul–Trench type formulae for the Moore–Penrose and group inverses of singular Toeplitz matrices. We develop a fast algorithm for the computation of the Moore–Penrose inverse based on a Gohberg–Semencul–Trench type formula and the LSQR method. For the group inverse, the DGMRES method is used to perform the fast computation. Numerical tests show that the fast algorithms designed here are at least as good as the known Newton iteration.

Abstract:This paper presents a full rank factorization of a 2×2 block matrix without any restriction concerning the group inverse. Applying this factorization, we obtain an explicit representation of the group inverse in terms of four individual blocks of the partitioned matrix without certain restriction. We also derive some important coincidence theorems, including the expressions of the group inverse with Banachiewicz-Schur forms.
Modified Newton'S Algorithm for Computing the Group Inverses of Singular Toeplitz Matrices

Abstract:Newton's iteration is modified for the computation of the group inverses of singular Toeplitz matrices. At each iteration, the iteration matrix is approximated by a matrix with a low displacement rank. Because of the displacement structure of the iteration matrix, the matrix-vector multiplication involved in Newton's iteration can be done efficiently. We show that the convergence of the modified Newton iteration is still very fast. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the fast convergence of the proposed method.

Abstract:We define the {i}-inverse (i = 1; 2; 5) and group inverse of tensors based on a general product of tensors. We explore properties of the generalized inverses of tensors on solving tensor equations and computing formulas of block tensors. We use the {1}-inverse of tensors to give the solutions of a multilinear system represented by tensors. The representations for the {1}-inverse and group inverse of some block tensors are established.

Abstract:Let G be a semisimple Lie group with a Cartan decomposition G = K exp($\mathfrak{p}$). For every finite-dimensional representation of G, there is an inner product on the representation space such that with respect to it, K acts as unitary operators, and exp($\mathfrak{p}$) acts as positive definite Hermitian operators. In this paper, we observe that similar phenomena appear for infinite-dimensional representations with real infinitesimal characters.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide explicit formulas for the exact inverses of the symmetric tridiagonal near-Toeplitz matrices characterized by weak diagonal dominance in the Toeplitz part. Furthermore, these findings extend to scenarios where the corners of the near Toeplitz matrices lack diagonal dominance ($|\widetilde{b}| < 1$). Additionally, we compute the row sums and traces of the inverse matrices, thereby deriving upper bounds for their infinite norms. To demonstrate the practical applicability of our theoretical results, we present numerical examples addressing numerical solution of the Fisher problem using the fixed point method. Our findings reveal that the convergence rates of fixed-point iterations closely align with the expected rates, and there is minimal disparity between the upper bounds and the infinite norm of the inverse matrix. Specifically, this observation holds true for $|b| = 2$ with $|\widetilde{b}| \geq 1$. In other cases, there exists potential to enhance the obtained upper bounds.

Abstract:A novel factorization for the sum of two single-pair matrices is established as product of lower-triangular, tridiagonal, and upper-triangular matrices, leading to semi-closed-form formulas for tridiagonal matrix inversion. Subsequent factorizations are established, leading to semi-closed-form formulas for the inverse sum of two single-pair matrices. An application to derive the symbolic inverse of a particular Gram matrix is presented, and the numerical stability of the formulas is studied.

Abstract:Let $M= \left[ \begin{array}{cc} A& B \\ C& O \end{array} \right]$ be a complex square matrix where A is square. When BCB^{\Omega} =0, rank(BC) = rank(B) and the group inverse of $\left[ \begin{array}{cc} B^{\Omega} A B^{\Omega} & 0 \\ CB^{\Omega} & 0 \right]$ exists, the group inverse of M exists if and only if rank(BC + A)B^{\Omega}AB^{\Omega})^{\pi}B^{\Omega}A)= rank(B). In this case, a representation of $M^#$ in terms of the group inverse and Moore-Penrose inverse of its subblocks is given. Let A be a real matrix. The sign pattern of A is a (0,+,â)-matrix obtained from A by replacing each entry by its sign. The qualitative class of A is the set of the matrices with the same sign pattern as A, denoted by Q(A). The matrix A is called S^2GI, if the group inverse of each matrix \bar{A} in Q(A) exists and its sign pattern is independent of e A. By using the group inverse representation, a necessary and sufficient condition for a real block matrix to be an S^2GI-matrix is given.

In addition, we present Ad(T,S)((2))b as a convex combination of solutions of some nonsingular linear equations. Finally, we present two illustrative examples for computing the generalized inverses.

Abstract:The sign pattern of a real matrix M is the (0, 1, -1)-matrix obtained from M by replacing each entry by its sign. Let N is an element of R-nxn be a group invertible matrix. Let Q(N) be the set of real matrices with the same sign pattern as N. For any (N) over tilde is an element of Q(N), if (N) over tilde is group invertible and the group inverses of N and (N) over tilde have the same sign pattern, then N is called an S(2)GI matrix. In this article, we present the existence and the representations for the group inverse of some block matrices with one or two full rank sub-blocks, and give a family of block matrices which are S(2)GI matrices. Applying these results, we can partially determine the sign pattern of the solution of singular linear system with index one.

Abstract:Representations of {1,2,3}-inverses, {1,2,4}-inverses, and Drazin inverse of a partitioned matrix M = [GRAPHICS] related to the generalized Schur complement are studied. First, we give the necessary and sufficient conditions under which {1,2,3}-inverses, {1,2,4}-inverses, and group inverse of a 2 x 2 block matrix can be represented in the Banachiewicz-Schur forms. Some results from the paper of Cvetkovic-ilic, 2009, are generalized. Also, we expressed the quotient property and the first Sylvester identity in terms of the generalized Schur complement.

Abstract:This paper presents an integer preserving (IP) version of the Levinson algorithm to solve a normal set of equations for a Hermitian Toeplitz matrix with any singularity profile. The IP property means that for a matrix with integer entries, the algorithm can be completed over the integer solely by using a ring of integer operations. The IP algorithm provides remedies for unpredictable numerical outcomes when a corresponding floating-point (FP) Levinson algorithm either overlooks zero principal minors (PMs) or applies a singularity skipping routine to a PM that is considered erroneously to be zero. The error-free computational edge of integer arithmetic is also applicable to a non-integer Toeplitz matrix by first scaling it up to an acceptably accurate integer matrix. The proposed algorithm can also be used to obtain the inverse of a nonsingular Hermitian Toeplitz matrix (with any singularity profile) by one of two proposed IP Gohberg-Semencul type inversion formulas.

Explicit formulas for the inverses of Toeplitz matrices, with applications

Abstract:We derive novel explicit formulas for the inverses of truncated block Toeplitz matrices that correspond to a multivariate minimal stationary process. The main ingredients of the formulas are the Fourier coefficients of the phase function attached to the spectral density of the process. The derivation of the formulas is based on a recently developed finite prediction theory applied to the dual process of the stationary process. We illustrate the usefulness of the formulas by two applications. The first one is a strong convergence result for solutions of general block Toeplitz systems for a multivariate short-memory process. The second application is closed-form formulas for the inverses of truncated block Toeplitz matrices corresponding to a multivariate ARMA process. The significance of the latter is that they provide us with a linear-time algorithm to compute the solutions of corresponding block Toeplitz systems.
