Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument-Chinese Revised Version in Participants with Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract:Aim:To explore the effect of Cognitive Abilities Screening Instrument(CASI) in patients with Alzheimer's disease(AD) of different severity and find out its correlation with mini mental state examination (MMSE).Method:30 normal elderly people,20 MCI subjects and 53 AD patients of different severity(20 mild, 19 moderate,14 severe) were tested by CASI-2.0,MMSE and a battery of neuropsychological tests,which included auditory verbal learning test(AVLT) and clinical dementia rating scale(CDR),etc.Results:We found that the mild cognitive impairment(MCI) subjects had declined short-term memory and conception judgement, and the time consumption was lengthened.All the subtests from orientation to mental arithmetic were impaired in mild,moderate and severe AD patients,meanwhile,the scores declined according to the severity of the disease.Except severe AD,the scores of MCI,mild AD and moderate AD declined 10 points each with the severity of cognitive impairment.Taking 85 points as the cut-off score of CASI,the sensitivity to identify MCI and AD is 70.6%,82.7%,respectively,while the specificity to indentify AD is 73.9%.However,for subjects of education level above undergraduate,CASI is too easy,and may lead to false negative.Conclusion:CASI can be used effectively to identify the severity of cognitive impairment in AD patients.MMSE score can be derived from CASI.
