Abstract:Clay minerals are inexpensive, sustainable, and abundant natural minerals being considered as replacements for cement binders. For this purpose, clays have to be activated to improve their pozzolanic activity, i.e., to yield an amorphous aluminosilicate phase that can easily react with calcium hydroxide to form binding phases; additional calcium aluminosilicate hydrate and calcium aluminate hydrates. Activation plays a key role in boosting the cement replacing potential of clay minerals, with the key to understanding activation lying in the control of dehydroxylation. This work promotes mechanochemical activations for comprehensive executing, monitoring and understanding of the dehydroxylation during clay activation. We monitored the mechanochemical conditions, yield degree of amorphization and heat of hydration. Considering the lower dissipation of thermal energy and better control of amorphization mechanochemical conditions were set at 400 rpm for 2 h. Results point out to the disruption of the kaolinite structure on behalf of chemically bound water release and reorganization of Al chemical bonds. The results indicate that with an increase in TGA steps, there are shifts in kaolin dehydroxylation processes, such as water evaporation and spinel crystallization (DTA), as well as shifts in the respective IR bands. Additionally, there is an increase in specific surface area (BET) and a decrease in particle size (SEM, XRD). Calorimetry of the cement paste CEM I 52.5 N indicates an apparently higher thermal reactivity of the aluminate phase compared to the silicate phase as a function of the particle size distribution. The presence of the mechanochemically activated clay changed the morphology, particle size, specific surface area, amorphous content, and thus the availability of pozzolanic aluminum for cement hydration reactions, which is thereby accelerated. It was observed the aluminate phase exhibits higher reactivity. The hydration mechanisms of the silicate (C 3 S) and aluminate (C 3 A) phases as well as the depletion of SO 4 2– ions were affected. Consequently, mechanochemical processing can be utilized as a powerful tool to activate pozzolanic clay with cement-replacing potential.
