Abstract:Given a set of rectangles we are asked to pack as many of them as possible into a bigger rectangle. The rectangles packed may not overlap and may not be rotated. This problem is NP-hard in the strong sense even for packing squares into a square. We establish the relationship between the asymptotic worst-case ratio and the (absolute) worst-case ratio for the problem. It is proved that there exists an asymptotic FPTAS, and thus a PTAS, for packing squares into a rectangle. We give an approximation algorithm with asymptotic ratio of at most two for packing rectangles, and further show a simple (2 + epsilon)-approximation algorithm.

Abstract:We consider the following rectangle packing problem: Given a set of rectangles, each of which is associated with a profit, we are requested to pack a subset of the rectangles into a bigger rectangle to maximize the total profit of rectangles packed. The rectangles may not overlap and may or may not be rotated. This problem is strongly NP-hard even for packing squares with identical profits. A simple (3 + ε)-approximation algorithm is presented. We further improve the algorithm by showing a worst-case ratio of at most 5/2 + ε. Finally we devise a (2 + ε)-approximation algorithm. A number of restricted cases are also considered.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a variant of set packing, in which a set P of paths in a graph $G=(V,E)$ is given, the goal is to find a maximum number of edge-disjoint paths of P. We show that the problem is NP-hard even if each path in P contains at most three edges, while it is hard to approximate within $O(|E|^{1/2-\epsilon })$ for the general case unless $NP=ZPP$. In the positive aspect, a parameterized algorithm relying on the maximum degree and the tree-width of G is derived. For tree networks, we present a polynomial time optimal algorithm.
New Upper Bounds on the Approximability of 3D Strip Packing

Abstract:In this paper, we study the 3D strip packing problem in which we are given a list of 3-dimensional boxes and required to pack all of them into a 3-dimensional strip with length 1 and width 1 and unlimited height to minimize the height used. Our results are below: i) we give an approximation algorithm with asymptotic worst-case ratio 1.69103, which improves the previous best bound of 2+ϵ by Jansen and Solis-Oba of SODA 2006; ii) we also present an asymptotic PTAS for the case in which all items have square bases.

Abstract:Simchi-Levi (Naval Res. Logist. 41 (1994) 579-585) proved that the famous bin packing algorithms FF and BF have an absolute worst-case ratio of no more than 74, and FFD and BFD have an absolute worst-case ratio of 32, respectively. These algorithms run in time O(nlogn). In this paper, we provide a linear time constant space (number of bins kept during the execution of the algorithm is constant) off-line approximation algorithms with absolute worst-case ratio 32. This result is best possible unless P=NP. Furthermore, we present a linear time constant space on-line algorithm and prove that the absolute worst-case ratio is 74.
Strip Packing Vs. Bin Packing.

Abstract:In this paper we establish a general algorithmic framework between bin packing and strip packing, with which we achieve the same asymptotic bounds by applying bin packing algorithms to strip packing. More precisely we obtain the following results: (1) Any offline bin packing algorithm can be applied to strip packing maintaining the same asymptotic worst-case ratio. Thus using FFD (First Fit Decreasing Height) as a subroutine, we get a practical (simple and fast) algorithm for strip packing with an upper bound 11/9. (2) A class of Harmonic-based algorithms for bin packing can be applied to online strip packing maintaining the same asymptotic competitive ratio. It implies online strip packing admits an upper bound of 1.58889 on the asymptotic competitive ratio. This significantly improves the previously best bound of 1.6910 and affirmatively answers an open question posed in [5].

Abstract:The 2D Online Bin Packing is a fundamental problem in Computer Science and the determination of its asymptotic competitive ratio has research attention. A new upper bound of 2.5545 is obtained for 2-dimensional online bin packing. The main idea is to develop new weighting functions for the Super Harmonic algorithm and propose new techniques to bound the total weight in a rectangular bin.

Abstract:In this paper we establish an algorithmic framework between bin packing and strip packing, with which strip packing can be very well approximated by applying some bin packing algorithms. More precisely we obtain the following results: (1) Any off-line bin packing algorithm can be applied to strip packing maintaining almost the same asymptotic worst-case ratio. (2) A class of Harmonic-based algorithms for bin packing, such as Refined Harmonic, Modified Harmonic, Harmonic++, can be applied to online strip packing. In particular, we show that online strip packing admits an upper bound of 1.58889+ϵ on the asymptotic competitive ratio, for any arbitrarily small ϵ>0. This significantly improves the previously best bound of 1.6910 and affirmatively answers an open question posed by Csirik and Woeginger (1997). Moreover, the time complexity mainly depends on a sorting procedure and the bin packing algorithms employed.

Abstract:The (online) bin packing problem with LIB constraint is stated as follows: The items arrive one by one, and must be packed into unit capacity bins, but a bigger item cannot be packed into a bin which already contains a smaller item. The number of used bins has to be minimized as usually. We show that the absolute performance bound of algorithm First Fit is not worse than 2+1/6≈2.1666 for the problem, improving the previous best upper bound 2.5. Moreover, if the item sizes do not exceed 1/d, then we improve the previous best result 2+1/d to 2+1/d(d+2), for any d≥2. (Both previously best results are due to Epstein, Nav. Res. Logist. 56(8):780–786, 2009.) Furthermore, we define a problem with the generalized LIB constraint, where some incoming items cannot be packed into the bins of some already packed items. The (in)compatibility of the incoming item with the items already packed becomes known only at the arrival of the actual item, and is given by an undirected graph (and, as usual in case of online graph problems, we can see only that part of the graph what already arrived). We show that 3 is an upper bound for this general problem if some natural transitivity constraint is satisfied.

Abstract:We show that packing axis-aligned unit squares into a simple polygon $P$ is NP-hard, even when $P$ is an orthogonal and orthogonally convex polygon with half-integer coordinates. It has been known since the early 80s that packing unit squares into a polygon with holes is NP-hard~[Fowler, Paterson, Tanimoto, Inf. Process. Lett., 1981], but the version without holes was conjectured to be polynomial-time solvable more than two decades ago~[Baur and Fekete, Algorithmica, 2001].

Abstract:The Set Packing problem is, given a collection of sets over a ground set U , to find a maximum collection of sets that are pairwise disjoint. The problem is among the most fundamental NP-hard optimization problems that have been studied extensively in various computational regimes. The focus of this work is on parameterized complexity, Parameterized Set Packing ( PSP ): Given parameter , is there a collection such that the sets in are pairwise disjoint? Unfortunately, the problem is not fixed parameter tractable unless , and, in fact, an "enumerative" running time of is required unless the exponential time hypothesis (ETH) fails. This paper is a quest for tractable instances of Set Packing from parameterized complexity perspectives. We say that the input is "compact" if , for some . In the Compact PSP problem, we are given a compact instance of PSP . In this direction, we present a "dichotomy" result of PSP : When , PSP is in FPT , while for , the problem is W[1] -hard; moreover, assuming ETH, Compact PSP does not admit time algorithm even when . Although certain results in the literature imply hardness of compact versions of related problems such as Set -Covering and Exact -Covering , these constructions fail to extend to Compact PSP . A novel contribution of our work is the identification and construction of a gadget, which we call Compatible Intersecting Set System pair, that is crucial in obtaining the hardness result for Compact PSP . Finally, our framework can be extended to obtain improved running time lower bounds for Compact -VectorSum .

Improved Hardness of Approximation for Geometric Bin Packing

Abstract:The Geometric Bin Packing (GBP) problem is a generalization of Bin Packing where the input is a set of $d$-dimensional rectangles, and the goal is to pack them into unit $d$-dimensional cubes efficiently. It is NP-Hard to obtain a PTAS for the problem, even when $d=2$. For general $d$, the best-known approximation algorithm has an approximation guarantee exponential in $d$, while the best hardness of approximation is still a small constant inapproximability from the case when $d=2$. In this paper, we show that the problem cannot be approximated within $d^{1-\epsilon}$ factor unless NP=ZPP. Recently, $d$-dimensional Vector Bin Packing, a closely related problem to the GBP, was shown to be hard to approximate within $\Omega(\log d)$ when $d$ is a fixed constant, using a notion of Packing Dimension of set families. In this paper, we introduce a geometric analog of it, the Geometric Packing Dimension of set families. While we fall short of obtaining similar inapproximability results for the Geometric Bin Packing problem when $d$ is fixed, we prove a couple of key properties of the Geometric Packing Dimension which highlight fundamental differences between Geometric Bin Packing and Vector Bin Packing.

Abstract:Motivated by applications in production planning and storage allocation in hierarchical databases, we initiate the study of covering partially ordered items (CPO). Given a capacity $k \in \mathbb{Z}^+$, and a directed graph $G=(V,E)$ where each vertex has a size in $\{0,1, \ldots,k\}$, we seek a collection of subsets of vertices $S_1, \ldots, S_m$ that cover all the vertices, such that for any $1 \leq j \leq m$, the total size of vertices in $S_j$ is bounded by $k$, and there are no edges from $V \setminus S_j$ to $S_j$. The objective is to minimize the number of subsets $m$. CPO is closely related to the rule caching problem (RCP) that is of wide interest in the networking area. The input for RCP is a directed graph $G=(V,E)$, a profit function $p:V \rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_{0}^+$, and $k \in \mathbb{Z}^+$. The output is a subset $S \subseteq V$ of maximum profit such that $|S| \leq k$ and there are no edges from $V \setminus S$ to $S$.

Sequential and Parallel Algorithms for Mixed Packing and Covering

Abstract:Mixed packing and covering problems are problems that can be formulated as linear programs using only non-negative coefficients. Examples include multicommodity network flow, the Held-Karp lower bound on TSP, fractional relaxations of set cover, bin-packing, knapsack, scheduling problems, minimum-weight triangulation, etc. This paper gives approximation algorithms for the general class of problems. The sequential algorithm is a simple greedy algorithm that can be implemented to find an epsilon-approximate solution in O(epsilon^-2 log m) linear-time iterations. The parallel algorithm does comparable work but finishes in polylogarithmic time. The results generalize previous work on pure packing and covering (the special case when the constraints are all "less-than" or all "greater-than") by Michael Luby and Noam Nisan (1993) and Naveen Garg and Jochen Konemann (1998).

A note on online hypercube packing

Abstract:In this paper, we study an online multi-dimensional bin packing problem where all items are hypercubes. Hypercubes of different size arrive one by one, and we are asked to pack each of them without knowledge of the next pieces so that the number of bins used is minimized. Based on the techniques from one dimensional bin packing and specifically the algorithm Super Harmonic by Seiden (J ACM 49:640–671, 2002), we extend the framework for online bin packing problems developed by Seiden to the hypercube packing problem. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper to apply a version of Super Harmonic (and not of the Improved Harmonic algorithm) for online square packing, although the Super Harmonic has been already known before. Note that the best previous result was obtained by Epstein and van Stee (Acta Inform 41(9):595–606, 2005b) using an instance of Improved Harmonic. In this paper we show that Super Harmonic is more powerful than Improve Harmonic for online hypercube packing, and then we obtain better upper bounds on asymptotic competitive ratios. More precisely, we get an upper bound of 2.1187 for square packing and an upper bound of 2.6161 for cube packing, which improve upon the previous upper bounds 2.24437 and 2.9421 (Epstein and van Stee in Acta Inform 41(9):595–606, 2005b) for the two problems, respectively.
Hitting Meets Packing: How Hard Can it Be?

Abstract:We study a general family of problems that form a common generalization of classic hitting (also referred to as covering or transversal) and packing problems. An instance of X-HitPack asks: Can removing k (deletable) vertices of a graph G prevent us from packing $\ell$ vertex-disjoint objects of type X? This problem captures a spectrum of problems with standard hitting and packing on opposite ends. Our main motivating question is whether the combination X-HitPack can be significantly harder than these two base problems. Already for a particular choice of X, this question can be posed for many different complexity notions, leading to a large, so-far unexplored domain in the intersection of the areas of hitting and packing problems. On a high-level, we present two case studies: (1) X being all cycles, and (2) X being all copies of a fixed graph H. In each, we explore the classical complexity, as well as the parameterized complexity with the natural parameters k+l and treewidth. We observe that the combined problem can be drastically harder than the base problems: for cycles or for H being a connected graph with at least 3 vertices, the problem is \Sigma_2^P-complete and requires double-exponential dependence on the treewidth of the graph (assuming the Exponential-Time Hypothesis). In contrast, the combined problem admits qualitatively similar running times as the base problems in some cases, although significant novel ideas are required. For example, for X being all cycles, we establish a 2^poly(k+l)n^O(1) algorithm using an involved branching method. Also, for X being all edges (i.e., H = K_2; this combines Vertex Cover and Maximum Matching) the problem can be solved in time 2^\poly(tw)n^O(1) on graphs of treewidth tw. The key step enabling this running time relies on a combinatorial bound obtained from an algebraic (linear delta-matroid) representation of possible matchings.

On the Approximability of Covering Points by Lines and Related Problems

Abstract:Given a set P of n points in the plane, Covering Points by Lines is the problem of finding a minimum-cardinality set L of lines such that every point p∈P is incident to some line ℓ∈L. As a geometric variant of Set Cover, Covering Points by Lines is still NP-hard. Moreover, it has been proved to be APX-hard, and hence does not admit any polynomial-time approximation scheme unless P = NP. In contrast to the small constant approximation lower bound implied by APX-hardness, the current best approximation ratio for Covering Points by Lines is still O(log⁡n), namely the ratio achieved by the greedy algorithm for Set Cover.In this paper, we give a lower bound of Ω(log⁡n) on the approximation ratio of the greedy algorithm for Covering Points by Lines. We also study several related problems including Maximum Point Coverage by Lines, Minimum-Link Covering Tour, Minimum-Link Spanning Tour, and Min–Max-Turn Hamiltonian Tour. We show that all these problems are either APX-hard or at least NP-hard. In particular, our proof of APX-hardness of Min–Max-Turn Hamiltonian Tour sheds light on the difficulty of Bounded-Turn-Minimum-Length Hamiltonian Tour, a problem proposed by Aggarwal et al. at SODA 1997.
