Abstract:In this short note, we prove that T. Chan's preconditioner proposed in {TChan} [SIAM J. Sci. Statist. Comput., 9 (1988), pp. 766--771] is stable for matrices that are normal and stable.

Abstract:A matrix is said to be stable if the real part of all the eigenvalues are negative. In this note, for some class of matrices, we show that T. Chan’s preconditioner is stable. By using this result, we prove the invertibility of some preconditioners proposed in numerical ODEs recently.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new preconditioner for solving linear systems by the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method. The preconditioner can be thought of as a generalization of the well-known T. Chan’s preconditioner. For Hermitian positive definite matrix, we observe that our preconditioner is also Hermitian positive definite. The operation cost and convergence of the PCG method are discussed. Numerical experiments have been performed on structured problems to show the competitiveness of this preconditioner.

Abstract:A necessary and sufficient condition was presented for the quadratic stability of interval matrices and a related calculation method of stability margin. The results were obtained in terms of LMIs. With the powerful LMI toolbox, it was very convenient to solve this problem. Examples showed that this method is effective in determining the robust stability and related stability margin of interval matrices.

Abstract:For any given n-by-n matrix An, T. Chan’s circulant preconditioner cF(An) proposed by T. Chan [T. Chan, An optimal circulant preconditioner for Toeplitz systems, SIAM J. Sci. Statist. Comput. 9 (1988) 766–771] is defined to be the solution ofminCnAn-Cn‖Fover all n-by-n circulant matrices Cn. The cF(An), called the optimal circulant preconditioner by T. Chan, has been proved to be a good preconditioner for a large class of structured systems. A generalization of T. Chan’s circulant preconditioner was given by Huckle [T. Huckle, Circulant and skew circulant matrices for solving Toeplitz matrix problems, SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 13 (1992) 767–777] which can be used for solving some general linear systems. In this paper, we review some old and develop some new properties of T. Chan’s circulant preconditioner.

Abstract:We present a modified T. Chan’s preconditioner for solving Toeplitz linear systems by the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method in this paper. Especially, we give some results when the matrices are Hermitian positive definite Toeplitz matrices. The operation and convergence of the PCG method are discussed. Numerical examples presented illustrate the effectiveness of the preconditioner obtained.

Abstract:Linear systems with M-matrices often occur in a wide variety of areas including scientific computing, operations research, stochastic analysis and economics. In this paper, we use a new preconditioner for solving such a kind of system by the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method. We show that our preconditioner can obtain a fast convergence rate. A numerical example is also given.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the eigenvalues properties of the general saddle point problem with preconditioners which contain a real parameter alpha. We will give the minimal polynomial of these preconditioned matrix and show that the eigenvalues of preconditioned matrix are real, and the exact Schur complement leads to preconditioned matrix with exactly two or exactly three distinct eigenvalues which are the function of the parameter alpha.

Abstract:Linear systems with M-matrices occur in a wide variety of areas including numerical partial differential equations, input-output production and growth models in economics, linear complementarity problems in operations research and Markov chains in stochastic analysis.In this paper, we propose a new preconditioner for solving a system with symmetric positive definite M-matrix by the preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) method. We show that our preconditioner increases the convergence rate of the PCG method and reduces the operation cost. Numerical results are given.

Abstract:We present a novel preconditioner for numerical solutions of large sparse linear systems with indefinite and asymmetric matrices. This new preconditioner named as product preconditioner(PS) is constructed by two fairly simple preconditioners. The distribution of eigenvalues and the form of the eigenvectors of the preconditioned matrix are analyzed. Moreover, an upper bound on the degree of the minimal polynomial is also studied. Numerical experiments with several examples show that the proposed PS performs better than block diagonal preconditioner(BD) and block triangular preconditioner (BT) as well as the constraint preconditioner(SC) in terms of the number of iteration and computational time.

Abstract:In this note, a sufficient condition is derived for the stability of a spatially invariant distributed dynamical system, based on the geometrical structure of the null space of a matrix polynomial. This condition is less conservative than the available computationally feasible criteria. Moreover, using the idea of parameter dependent linear matrix inequalities, a necessary and sufficient condition is obtained. Both of these two conditions are expressed by LMIs. While the necessity of the latter is lost if the degree of the related matrix polynomials is small, its conservativeness can be sequentially reduced.

Abstract:Stability conditions of T-S fuzzy system based on a common positive definite matrix. or a set of positive definite matrices have been proposed in lots of literature. This paper proposes an approach to relax the conservatism of those stability conditions. By using the concept of the efficient maximal overlapped-rules group (EMORG), a relaxed sufficient condition is derived to guarantee quadratic stability of the fuzzy model globally. This condition only requires finding a local common positive definite matrix in each EMORG. Moreover, the proposed stability condition includes previous results as special cases. Several examples are illustrated to show the effectiveness of the proposed stability condition.

Abstract:We proposed a substructure preconditioner for a class of structured linear system of equations. We show that a preconditioner with half of the constraint terms is able to make the preconditioned matrix have only three distinct eigenvalues. For some practical applications, a regularized variant is formulated, and the influence of the regularization parameter is analyzed. Numerical results show that the regularized variant is as efficient and is able to produce nearly optimal convergence behavior with a wide range of parameters.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the preconditioners of Sturler and Liesen [SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 26(2005): 1598-1619]. The spectral characteristics of the preconditioners are investigated and the results show that all eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrices are strongly clustered. Finally, numerical experiments are also reported for illustrating the efficiency of the presented preconditioners.

Abstract:<p>In this paper we associate a class of Hurwitz matrix polynomials with Stieltjes positive definite matrix sequences. This connection leads to an extension of two classical criteria of Hurwitz stability for real polynomials to matrix polynomials: tests for Hurwitz stability via positive definiteness of block-Hankel matrices built from matricial Markov parameters and via matricial Stieltjes continued fractions. We obtain further conditions for Hurwitz stability in terms of block-Hankel minors and quasiminors, which may be viewed as a weak version of the total positivity criterion.</p>

Abstract:In this paper, by using Newton and Marclaurin inequalities we obtain some necessary conditions for a polynomial with positive coefficients to be Hurwitz stable, which generalize the recent results obtained in Borobia and Dormido (Linear Algebra Appl. 338 (2001) 67) and the proof of the result in this paper is much shorter than that of in Borobia and Dormido (Linear Algebra Appl. 338 (2001) 67).

Abstract:It is well-known that most iterative methods for linear systems with strictly diagonally dominant coefficient matrix A are convergent. When A is not diagonally dominant, preconditioned techniques can be employed. In this note, a sparse preconditioning matrix with parameters alpha(2), alpha(3),..., alpha(n) is constructed for transforming a general H-matrix into a strictly diagonally dominant matrix. Also, we discuss the relationship between diagonally dominant property and the parameters alpha(2), alpha(3),..., alpha(n).
