Abstract:Chen and Ye recently proved that the analytic rank of tensors is stable under field extensions, assuming a fixed base field. Using a more careful analysis, we show that this assumption is unnecessary.

Abstract:This paper studies the stability of tensor ranks under field extensions. Our main contributions are fourfold: (1) We prove that the analytic rank is stable under field extensions. (2) We establish the equivalence between the partition rank vs. analytic rank conjecture and the stability conjecture for partition rank. We also prove that they are equivalent to other two important conjectures. (3) We resolve the Adiprasito-Kazhdan-Ziegler conjecture on the stability of the slice rank of linear subspaces under field extensions. (4) As an application of (1), we show that the geometric rank is equal to the analytic rank up to a constant factor.

Uniform rank metric stability of Lie algebras, Lie groups and lattices

Abstract:We study uniform stability of discrete groups, Lie groups and Lie algebras in the rank metric, and the connections between uniform stability of these objects. We prove that semisimple Lie algebras are far from being flexibly $\mathbb{C}$-stable, and that semisimple Lie groups and lattices in semisimple Lie groups of higher rank are not strictly $\mathbb{C}$-stable. Furthermore, we prove that free groups are not uniformly flexibly $F$-stable over any field $F$.

Abstract:Comon's Conjecture asserts that for a symmetric tensor, the rank is equal to the symmetric rank. For the field of real numbers R or the field of complex numbers C, Zhang et al. proved the conjecture for the case that the rank of a symmetric tensor does not exceed the order. In this paper, we show that over arbitrary fields this conjecture is true when the rank of a tensor is less than its order. Moreover, we construct a counterexample in which the rank of a symmetric tensor whose rank equals its order.
Partition and Analytic Rank are Equivalent over Large Fields

Abstract:We prove that the partition rank and the analytic rank of tensors are equal up to a constant, over finite fields of any characteristic and any large enough cardinality depending on the analytic rank. Moreover, we show that a plausible improvement of our field cardinality requirement would imply that the ranks are equal up to 1+o(1) in the exponent over every finite field. At the core of the proof is a technique for lifting decompositions of multilinear polynomials in an open subset of an algebraic variety, and a technique for finding a large subvariety that retains all rational points such that at least one of these points satisfies a finite-field analogue of genericity with respect to it. Proving the equivalence between these two ranks, ideally over fixed finite fields, is a central question in additive combinatorics, and was reiterated by multiple authors. As a corollary we prove, allowing the field to depend on the value of the norm, the Polynomial Gowers Inverse Conjecture in the d vs. d-1 case.

Abstract:Using rank-1 reduction formula and the vector space spanned by the real rank-1 matrices, we present a different way to show that the maximum possible rank of the 2x2x2 tensors over the real field is 3. Following, we obtain that the maximum rank of the 2x2x2x2 tensors over the real field is less than or equal to 5 and propose another way to show that the maximum rank of the 2x2x2x2 tensors over the complex field is 4, except one special case.

Abstract:Extending the thoroughly studied theory of group stability, we study Ulam stability type problems for associative and Lie algebras; namely, we investigate obstacles to rank-approximation of almost solutions by exact solutions for systems of polynomial equations. This leads to a rich theory of stable associative and Lie algebras, with connections to linear soficity, amenability, growth, and group stability. We develop rank-stability and instability tests, examine the effect of algebraic constructions on rank-stability, and prove that while finite-dimensional associative algebras are rank-stable, `most' finite-dimensional Lie algebras are not.

Abstract:In connection with recent work on gaps in the asymptotic subranks of complex tensors the question arose whether the number of nonnegative real numbers that arise as the asymptotic subrank of some complex tensor is countable. In this short note we settle this question in the affirmative, for all tensor invariants that are algebraic in the sense that they are invariant under field automorphisms of the complex numbers.

Abstract:In this paper, we completely characterize the maximum rank of m x n x 2 tensors over an arbitrary field. We note that the maximal tensor rank may be different over different fields, and we find the maximum rank of a given m x n x 2 tensor is consistent over any field except F-2. Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> We obtain new uniform bounds for the symmetric tensor rank of multiplication in finite extensions of any finite field $\mathbb {F}_p$ or $\mathbb {F}_{p^2}$ where p denotes a prime number $\ge 5$ . In this aim, we use the symmetric Chudnovsky-type generalized algorithm applied on sufficiently dense families of modular curves defined over $\mathbb {F}_{p^2}$ attaining the Drinfeld–Vladuts bound and on the descent of these families to the definition field $\mathbb {F}_p$ . These families are obtained thanks to prime number density theorems of type Hoheisel, in particular a result due to Dudek (Funct Approx Commmentarii Math, 55(2):177–197, 2016).

Quasi-linear relation between partition and analytic rank

Abstract:An important conjecture in additive combinatorics, number theory, and algebraic geometry posits that the partition rank and analytic rank of tensors are equal up to a constant, over any finite field. We prove the conjecture up to a logarithmic factor. Our proof is largely independent of previous work, utilizing recursively constructed polynomial identities and random walks on zero sets of polynomials. We also introduce a new, vector-valued notion of tensor rank (``local rank''), which serves as a bridge between partition and analytic rank, and which may be of independent interest as a tool for analyzing higher-degree polynomials.

Abstract:Shitov recently gave a counterexample to Comon’s conjecture that the symmetric tensor rank and tensor rank of a symmetric tensor are the same. In this paper we show that an analog of Comon’s conjecture for the G-stable rank introduced by Derksen is true: the symmetric G-stable rank and G-stable rank of a symmetric tensor are the same. We also show that the log-canonical threshold of a singularity is bounded by the G-stable rank of the defining ideal.

Abstract:A tautological system, introduced in [17, 18], arises as a regular holonomic system of partial differential equations that govern the period integrals of a family of complete intersections in a complex manifold X, equipped with a suitable Lie group action. In this article, we introduce two formulas-one purely algebraic, the other geometric-to compute the rank of the solution sheaf of such a system for CY hypersurfaces in a generalized flag variety. The algebraic version gives the local solution space as a Lie algebra homology group, while the geometric one as the middle de Rham cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane section in X. We use both formulas to find certain degenerate points for which the rank of the solution sheaf becomes 1. These rank 1 points appear to be good candidates for the so-called large complex structure limits in mirror symmetry. The formulas are also used to prove a conjecture of Hosono, Lian, and Yau, on the completeness of the extended GKZ system when X is P-n [12].

Abstract:We prove a homological stability theorem for families of discrete groups (e.g. mapping class groups, automorphism groups of free groups, braid groups) with coefficients in a sequence of irreducible algebraic representations of arithmetic groups. The novelty is that the stable range is independent of the choice of representation. Combined with earlier work of Bergström--Diaconu--Petersen--Westerland this proves the Conrey--Farmer--Keating--Rubinstein--Snaith predictions for all moments of the family of quadratic $L$-functions over function fields, for sufficiently large odd prime powers.

Abstract:We give a necessary and sufficient condition for symmetric tensors to have symmetric rank decompositions and give some further results on the Comon's Conjecture (i.e. the rank and symmetric rank agree for a symmetric tensor). In particular, as an application, we prove that if an m-order 2-dimensional symmetric tensor has a symmetric rank decomposition, then its symmetric rank equals its rank or its rank plus one.

Abstract:Asymptotic tensor rank is notoriously difficult to determine. Indeed, determining its value for the $2\times 2$ matrix multiplication tensor would determine the matrix multiplication exponent, a long-standing open problem. On the other hand, Strassen's asymptotic rank conjecture makes the bold claim that asymptotic tensor rank equals the largest dimension of the tensor and is thus as easy to compute as matrix rank. Despite tremendous interest, much is still unknown about the structural and computational properties of asymptotic rank; for instance whether it is computable. We prove that asymptotic tensor rank is "computable from above", that is, for any real number $r$ there is an (efficient) algorithm that determines, given a tensor $T$, if the asymptotic tensor rank of $T$ is at most $r$. The algorithm has a simple structure; it consists of evaluating a finite list of polynomials on the tensor. Indeed, we prove that the sublevel sets of asymptotic rank are Zariski-closed (just like matrix rank). While we do not exhibit these polynomials explicitly, their mere existence has strong implications on the structure of asymptotic rank. As one such implication, we find that the values that asymptotic tensor rank takes, on all tensors, is a well-ordered set. In other words, any non-increasing sequence of asymptotic ranks stabilizes ("discreteness from above"). In particular, for the matrix multiplication exponent (which is an asymptotic rank) there is no sequence of exponents of bilinear maps that approximates it arbitrarily closely from above without being eventually constant. In other words, any upper bound on the matrix multiplication exponent that is close enough, will "snap" to it. Previously such discreteness results were only known for finite fields or for other tensor parameters (e.g., asymptotic slice rank). We obtain them for infinite fields like the complex numbers.

Abstract:We show that separable, simple, unital C*-algebras with finite decomposition rank absorb the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially. This has a number of consequences for Elliott's program to classify nuclear C*-algebras by their K-theory data. In particular, it completes the classification of C*-algebras associated to uniquely ergodic, smooth, minimal dynamical systems by their ordered K-groups.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a henselian valued field with ${\cal O}_K$ its valuation ring, $\Gamma$ its value group, and $\boldsymbol{k}$ its residue field. We study the definable subsets of ${\cal O}_K$ and algebraic groups definable over ${\cal O}_K$ in the case where $\boldsymbol{k}$ is algebraically closed and $\Gamma$ is a $\mathbb Z$-group. We first describe the definable subsets of ${\cal O}_K$, showing that every definable subset of ${\cal O}_K$ is either res-finite or res-cofinite (see Definition \ref{def-res-finite-cofinite}). Applying this result, we show that $\mathrm{GL}(n,{\cal O}_K)$ (the invertible $n$ by $n$ matrices over ${\cal O}_K$) are generically stable for each $n$, generalizing Y. Halevi's result, where $K$ is an algebraically closed valued field \cite{Y.Halevi}.
