Abstract:Let G be a semisimple Lie group with a Cartan decomposition G = K exp($\mathfrak{p}$). For every finite-dimensional representation of G, there is an inner product on the representation space such that with respect to it, K acts as unitary operators, and exp($\mathfrak{p}$) acts as positive definite Hermitian operators. In this paper, we observe that similar phenomena appear for infinite-dimensional representations with real infinitesimal characters.

Abstract:We study the operator-valued positive definite functions on a group using positive block matrices. We give an alternative proof to Brehmer positivity for doubly commuting contractions. We classify all commuting unitary representations over a finite group. We show by examples that the power of a positive-definite function may not be positive definite and also the power of a unitary representation may not be a unitary representation. We also characterize all unitary representations whose powers are also unitary representations.

Abstract:We exhibit an explicit, deterministic algorithm for finding a canonical form for a positive definite matrix under unimodular integral transformations. We use characteristic sets of short vectors and partition-backtracking graph software. The algorithm runs in a number of arithmetic operations that is exponential in the dimension $n$, but it is practical and more efficient than canonical forms based on Minkowski reduction.

Abstract:Compared to the entrywise transforms which preserve positive semidefiniteness, those leaving invariant the inertia of symmetric matrices reveal a surprising rigidity. We first obtain the classification of negativity preservers by combining recent advances in matrix analysis with some novel arguments using well chosen test matrices. We continue with the analogous classification in the multi-variable setting, revealing a striking separation of variables, with absolute monotonicity on one side and homotheties on the other. We conclude with the complex analogue of this result.

Rank properties of exposed positive maps. Linear Multilinear Alg. 2013;61:970–975] that the map Ads generates an exposed ray of the convex cone of all positive linear maps. In this note, we provide two alternative proofs, using Choi matrices and Woronowicz's method, respectively.

Abstract:We consider a new class of matrices associated to a real square matrix $A$ and to a vector $\vec{c} \in \{-1,1\}^n$ such that $c_1=1$ by using a map $\varphi_{\vec{c}}$ which turns out to be a conjugation of a matrix $A$ by a signature matrix. It is shown that every such matrix is similar and congruent to a matrix $A$ and that they have same permanental polynomials. There are $2^{n-1}$ maps $\varphi_{\vec{c}}$ and they form an abelian group under the composition of maps isomorphic to the group $({\mathbb{Z}_2}^{n-1}, +)$. A decomposition of matrices, on a symmetric and antisymmetric matrix under a map $\varphi_{\vec{c}}$, is considered. Particularly, it is shown that sum of all principal minors of the order two of a matrix $A$ is equal to the sum of all principal minors of the order two of their symmetric and antisymmetric parts. It is shown that any symmetric matrix and any antisymmetric matrix under the map $\varphi_{\vec{c}}$ are simultaneously permutation similar to certain block matrices which have two blocks. Finally, for a fixed matrix $A$, it is proved that the number of different matrices $\varphi_{\vec{c}}(A)$ is $2^{n-t}$, where $t$ is the number of connected components of the graph $G$ whose adjacency matrix is $A$.

Abstract:In this paper we provide an identity between determinant and generalized matrix function. Also, a criterion of positive semi-definite matrices affirming the permanent dominant conjecture is given. As a consequence, infinitely many infinite classes of positive semi-definite serving the conjecture (does not depend on groups or characters) are provided by generating from any positive semi-definite matrix having no zero in the first column.

In this paper, the following statements are proved: (a) Each idempotent matrix over R can be diagonalized if and only if each idempotent matrix over R has a characteristic vector. (b) An idempotent matrix over R can be diagonalized under a similarity transformation if and only if it is equivalent to a diagonal matrix. (a) and (b) generalize Foster's and Steger's theorems to arbitrary rings. We give some new results about 0-similarity of idempotent matrices over R.

Abstract:The question of which functions acting entrywise preserve positive semidefiniteness has a long history, beginning with the Schur product theorem [Crelle 1911], which implies that absolutely monotonic functions (i.e., power series with nonnegative coefficients) preserve positivity on matrices of all dimensions. A famous result of Schoenberg and of Rudin [Duke Math. J. 1942, 1959] shows the converse: there are no other such functions. Motivated by modern applications, Guillot and Rajaratnam [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 2015] classified the entrywise positivity preservers in all dimensions, which act only on the off-diagonal entries. These two results are at "opposite ends", and in both cases the preservers have to be absolutely monotonic. We complete the classification of positivity preservers that act entrywise except on specified "diagonal/principal blocks", in every case other than the two above. (In fact we achieve this in a more general framework.) This yields the first examples of dimension-free entrywise positivity preservers - with certain forbidden principal blocks - that are not absolutely monotonic.

A note on the positivity of inverse operators acting on $C^*$-algebras

Abstract:For a positive and invertible linear operator $T$ acting on a $C^*$-algebra, we give necessary and sufficient criteria for the inverse operator $T^{-1}$ to be positive, too. Moreover, a simple counterexample shows that $T^{-1}$ need not be positive even if $T$ is unital and its spectrum is contained in the unit circle.

Abstract:The H-matrices are an important class in the matrix theory, and have many applications. Recently, this concept has been extended to higher order ?-tensors. In this paper, we establish important properties of diagonally dominant tensors and ?-tensors. Distributions of eigenvalues of nonsingular symmetric ?-tensors are given. An ?+-tensor is semi-positive, which enlarges the area of semi-positive tensor from ?-tensor to ?+-tensor. The spectral radius of Jacobi tensor of a nonsingular (resp. singular) ?-tensor is less than (resp. equal to) one. In particular, we show that a quasi-diagonally dominant tensor is a nonsingular ?-tensor if and only if all of its principal sub-tensors are nonsingular ?-tensors. An irreducible tensor Ais an ?-tensor if and only if it is quasi-diagonally dominant.
A note on the Huijsmans-de Pagter problem on finite dimensional ordered vector spaces

Abstract:A classical problem posed in 1992 by Huijsmans and de Pagter asks whether, for every positive operator $T$ on a Banach lattice with spectrum $\sigma(T) = \{1\}$, the inequality $T \ge \operatorname{id}$ holds true. While the problem remains unsolved in its entirety, a positive solution is known in finite dimensions. In the broader context of ordered Banach spaces, Drnovšek provided an infinite-dimensional counterexample. In this note, we demonstrate the existence of finite-dimensional counterexamples, specifically on the ice cream cone and on a polyhedral cone in $\mathbb{R}^3$. On the other hand, taking inspiration from the notion of $m$-isometries, we establish that each counterexample must contain a Jordan block of size at least $3$.
