Abstract:I consider the problem of existence of intrinsic determinantal equations for plane projective curves and hypersurfaces in projective space and prove that in many cases of interest there exist intrinsic determinantal equations. In particular I prove (1) in characteristic two any ordinary, plane projective curve of genus at least one is given by an intrinsic determinantal equation (2) in characteristic three any plane projective curve is an intrinsic Pfaffian (3) in any positive characteristic any plane projective curve is set theoretically the determinant of an intrinsic matrix (4) in any positive characteristic, any Frobenius split hypersurface in ${\bf P}^n$ is given by set theoretically as the determinant of an intrinsic matrix with homogeneous entries of degree between $1$ and $n-1$. In particular this implies that any smooth, Fano hypersurface is set theoretically given by an intrinsic determinantal equation and the same is also true for any Frobenius split Calabi-Yau hypersurface.

Abstract:The integral of a function $f$ defined on a symmetric space $M \simeq G/K$ may be expressed in the form of a determinant (or Pfaffian), when $f$ is $K$-invariant and, in a certain sense, a tensor power of a positive function of a single variable. The paper presents a few examples of this idea and discusses future extensions. Specifically, the examples involve symmetric cones, Grassmann manifolds, and classical domains.

Abstract:In this note we pursue a discrete analogue of a celebrated theorem by Osgood, Phillips and Sarnak, which states that in a fixed conformal class of Riemannian metrics of fixed volume on a closed Riemann surface, the zeta-determinant of the corresponding Laplace-Beltrami operator is maximized on a metric of constant Gaussian curvature. We study the corresponding question for the discrete cotan Laplace operator on triangulated surfaces. We show for some types of triangulations that the determinant (excluding zero eigenvalues) of the discrete cotan-Laplacian is stationary at discrete metrics of constant discrete Gaussian curvature. We present some numerical calculations, which suggest that these stationary points are in fact minima, strangely opposite to the smooth situation. We suggest an explanation of this discrepancy.

Abstract:Several papers have been written studying unexpected hypersurfaces. We say a finite set of points Z admits unexpected hypersurfaces if a general union of fat linear subspaces imposes less that the expected number of conditions on the ideal of Z. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a very unexpected hypersurface. This is a stronger condition which takes into account an explanation for some hypersurfaces previously considered unexpected. We then develop a duality theory to relate the study of very unexpected hypersurfaces to the derivations of dual hyperplane arrangements. This allows us to generalize results in the plane of Cook, Harbourne, Migliore, Nagel Faenzi, and Vallés to higher dimensions. In particular, we give a criterion to determine if a set Z admits very unexpected hypersurfaces in the case Z is invariant under the action of an irreducible reflection group on the ambient projective space. Our approach has new applications even in the projective plane where we are able to place strong conditions on sets of points Z which admit certain types of unexpected curves. We close relating Terao's Freeness Conjecture for line arrangements to a conjecture due to G. Dirac on configurations of points in the real plane.

Abstract:We study the dimensions of Hadamard products of $k\ge 3$ varieties if we allow to modify $k-1$ of them by the action of a general projective linear transformation. We also prove that the join of a variety not contained in a coordinate hyperplane with a ``nice'' curve always has the expected dimension.

Abstract:Collisionless energy absorption in 1D nanoplasma layer is considered. Straightforward classical calculation of the absorption rate in action-angle variables is presented. In regular regime the result obtained is the same as in [Zaretsky <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://et.al" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>., 2004], but deeper insight is possible now due to the technique used. Chirikov criterion of the chaotic absorption regime is written out. Collisionless energy absorption rate in nanoplasma layer is calculated in stochastic regime.

History and Overview

Abstract:In 1857 Sylvester stated a result on determinants without proof that was recognized as important over the subsequent century. Thus it was a surprise to Akritas, Akritas and Malaschonok when they found only one English proof - given by Bareiss 111 years later! To rectify the gap in the literature these authors collected and translated six additional proofs: four from German and two from Russian. These proofs range from long and "readily understood by high school students" to elegant but high level. We add our own proof to this collection which exploits the product rule and the fact that taking a derivative of a determinant with respect to one of its elements yields its cofactor. A differential operator can then be used to replace one row with another.
The Wonderful Geometry of the Vandermonde map

Abstract:We study the geometry of the image of the nonnegative orthant under the power-sum map and the elementary symmetric polynomials map. After analyzing the image in finitely many variables, we concentrate on the limit as the number of variables approaches infinity. We explain how the geometry of the limit plays a crucial role in undecidability results in nonnegativity of symmetric polynomials, deciding validity of trace inequalities in linear algebra, and extremal combinatorics - recently observed by Blekherman, Raymond, and F. Wei. We verify the experimental observation that the image has the combinatorial geometry of a cyclic polytope made by Melánová, Sturmfels, and Winter, and generalize results of Choi, Lam, and Reznick on nonnegative even symmetric polynomials. We also show that undecidability does not hold for the normalized power sum map.

Abstract:We prove by induction on dimension the Hodge conjecture for smooth complex projective varieties. Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety. Then $X$ is birational to a possibly singular projective hypersurface, hence to a smooth projective variety $E_0$ which is a component of a normal crossing divisor $E=\cup_{i=0}^rE_i\subset Y$ which is the singular fiber of a pencil $f:Y\to\mathbb A^1$ of smooth projective hypersurfaces. Using the smooth hypersurface case by a previous result of the autor, the nearby cycle functor on mixed Hodge module with rational de Rham factor, and the induction hypothesis, we prove that an Hodge class of $E_0$ is absolute Hodge, more precisely the locus of Hodge classes inside the algebraic vector bundle given the De Rham cohomology the rational deformation of $E_0$ is defined over $\mathbb Q$. By another previous result of the autor, we get the Hodge conjecture for $E_0$. By the induction hypothesis we also have the Hodge conjecture for $X$.

Abstract:We describe the harmonic interpolation of convex bodies, and prove a strong form of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality and characterize its equality case. As an application we improve a theorem of Berndtsson on the volume of slices of a pseudoconvex domain. We furthermore apply this to prove subharmonicity of the expected absolute value of the determinant of a matrix of random vectors through the connection with zonoids.

The Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces in abelian varieties

Abstract:Faltings proved that there are finitely many abelian varieties of genus $g$ over a number field $K$, with good reduction outside a finite set of primes $S$. Fixing one of these abelian varieties $A$, we prove that there are finitely many smooth hypersurfaces in $A$, with good reduction outside $S$, representing a given ample class in the Néron-Severi group of $A$, up to translation, as long as the dimension of $A$ is at least $4$. Our approach builds on the approach of arXiv:1807.02721 which studies $p$-adic variations of Hodge structure to turn finiteness results for $p$-adic Galois representations into geometric finiteness statements. A key new ingredient is an approach to proving big monodromy for the variations of Hodge structure arising from the middle cohomology of these hypersurfaces using the Tannakian theory of sheaf convolution on abelian varieties.

Abstract:Sbrana and Cartan gave local classifications for the set of Euclidean hypersurfaces $M^n\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ which admit another genuine isometric immersions in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for $n\geq 3$. The main goal of this paper is to extend their classification to higher codimensions. Our main result is a complete description of the moduli space of genuine deformations of generic hypersurfaces of rank $(p+1)$ in $\mathbb{R}^{n+p}$ for $p\leq n-2$. As a consequence, we obtain an analogous classification to the ones given by Sbrana and Cartan providing all local isometric immersions in $\mathbb{R}^{n+2}$ of a generic hypersurface $M^n\subseteq\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$ for $n\geq 4$. We also show how the techniques developed here can be used to study conformally flat Euclidean submanifolds.

Abstract:We study nearly geodesic immersions in higher rank symmetric spaces of non-compact type, which we define as immersions that satisfy a bound on their fundamental form, generalizing the notion of immersions in hyperbolic space with principal curvature in $(-1,1)$. This notion depends on the choice of a flag manifold embedded in the visual boundary, and immersions satisfying this bound admit a natural domain in this flag manifold that comes with a fibration. As an application we give an explicit fibration of some domains of discontinuity for some Anosov representations. Our method can be applied in particular to some $\Theta$-positive representations for each notion of $\Theta$-positivity.
