Abstract:In this paper, we classify distance regular graphs such that all of its second largest local eigenvalues are at most one. Also we discuss the consequences for the smallest eigenvalue of a distance-regular graph. These extend a result by the first author, who classified the distance-regular graph with smallest eigenvalue $-1-\frac{b_1}{2}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the q -distance matrix for a distance-regular graph and show that the q -distance matrix of a distance-regular graph with classical parameters (D,q,α,β) has exactly three distinct eigenvalues, of which one is zero. Moreover, we study distance-regular graphs whose q -distance matrix has exactly one positive eigenvalue.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify non-geometric distance-regular graphs of diameter at least $3$ with smallest eigenvalue at least $-3$. This is progress towards what is hoped to be an eventual complete classification of distance-regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least $-3$, analogous to existing classification results available in the case that the smallest eigenvalue is at least $-2$.

Abstract:Consider two simple graphs, G1 and G2, with their respective vertex sets V(G1) and V(G2). The Kronecker product forms a new graph with a vertex set V(G1) X V(G2). In this new graph, two vertices, (x, y) and (u, v), are adjacent if and only if xu is an edge in G1 and yv is an edge in G2. While the adjacency spectrum of this product is known, the distance spectrum remains unexplored. This article determines the distance spectrum of the Kronecker product for a few families of distance regular graphs. We find the exact polynomial, which expresses the distance matrix D as a polynomial of the adjacency matrix, for two distance regular graphs, Johnson and Hamming graphs. Additionally, we present families of distance integral graphs, shedding light on a previously posted open problem given by Indulal and Balakrishnan in (AKCE International Journal of Graphs and Combinatorics, 13(3); 230 to 234, 2016).

Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite, simple, connected, combinatorial graph on $n$ vertices and let $D \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}$ be its graph distance matrix $D_{ij} = d(v_i, v_j)$. Steinerberger (J. Graph Theory, 2023) empirically observed that the linear system of equations $Dx =\mathbf{1}$, where $\mathbf{1} = (1,1,\dots, 1)^{T}$, very frequently has a solution (even in cases where $D$ is not invertible). The smallest nontrivial example of a graph where the linear system is not solvable are two graphs on 7 vertices. We prove that, in fact, counterexamples exists for all $n\geq 7$. The construction is somewhat delicate and further suggests that such examples are perhaps rare. We also prove that for Erdős-Rényi random graphs the graph distance matrix $D$ is invertible with high probability. We conclude with some structural results on the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector for a distance matrix.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of distance mean-regular graph, which can be seen as a generalization of both vertex-transitive and distance-regular graphs. Let $\Gamma$ be a graph with vertex set $V$, diameter $D$, adjacency matrix $A$, and adjacency algebra ${\cal A}$. Then, $\Gamma$ is $distance$ $mean$-$regular$ when, for a given $u\in V$, the averages of the intersection numbers $p_{ij}^h(u,v)=|\Gamma_i(u)\cap \Gamma_j(v)|$ (number of vertices at distance $i$ from $u$ and distance $j$ from $v$) computed over all vertices $v$ at a given distance $h\in \{0,1,\ldots,D\}$ from $u$, do not depend on $u$. In this work we study some properties and characterizations of these graphs. For instance, it is shown that a distance mean-regular graph is always distance degree-regular, and we give a condition for the converse to be also true. Some algebraic and spectral properties of distance mean-regular graphs are also investigated. We show that, for distance mean regular-graphs, the role of the distance matrices of distance-regular graphs is played for the so-called distance mean-regular matrices. These matrices are computed from a sequence of orthogonal polynomials evaluated at the adjacency matrix of $\Gamma$ and, hence, they generate a subalgebra of ${\cal A}$. Some other algebras associated to distance mean-regular graphs are also characterized.

Abstract:The eccentricity matrix of a graph is obtained from the distance matrix by keeping the entries that are largest in their row or column, and replacing the remaining entries by zero. This matrix can be interpreted as an opposite to the adjacency matrix, which is on the contrary obtained from the distance matrix by keeping only the entries equal to 1. In the paper, we determine graphs having the second largest eigenvalue of eccentricity matrix less than 1.

Abstract:We deal in this work with a class of graphs, namely, the class of distance-regular graphs, in which on the basis of $k$-adjacency operators, the adjacency operator $A$ of a distance-regular graph is identified as a Jacobi matrix. To get so, the set of the $k$-adjacency operators is recognized as a canonical basis in a certain Hilbert space, where the spectrum of the Jacobi matrix coincides with the support of the measure of $A$. The obtained identification permits a deeper spectral analysis of the graph. The finite-dimensional case is addressed by means of the extension theory of nondensely defined, symmetric linear operators.

Abstract:A graph $G$ with $d+1$ distinct eigenvalues is called strongly distance-regular if $G$ itself is distance-regular, and its distance-$d$ graph $G_d$ is strongly-regular. In this note we provide a spectral characterization of those distance-regular graphs with diameter $d=4$ which are strongly distance-regular. As a byproduct, it is shown that all bipartite strongly distance-regular graphs with such a diameter are antipodal.

This class of graphs have a close relationship to strongly regular graphs. In this paper, we study the distance eigenvalues of the design graphs. Abstract:The anti-adjacency matrix of a graph is constructed from the distance matrix of a graph by keeping each row and each column only the largest distances. This matrix can be interpreted as the opposite of the adjacency matrix, which is instead constructed from the distance matrix of a graph by keeping in each row and each column only the distances equal to 1. The (anti-)adjacency eigenvalues of a graph are those of its (anti-)adjacency matrix. Employing a novel technique introduced by Haemers (2019) [9] , we characterize all connected graphs with exactly one positive anti-adjacency eigenvalue, which is an analog of Smith's classical result that a connected graph has exactly one positive adjacency eigenvalue iff it is a complete multipartite graph. On this basis, we identify the connected graphs with all but at most two anti-adjacency eigenvalues equal to −2 and 0. Moreover, for the anti-adjacency matrix we determine the HL-index of graphs with exactly one positive anti-adjacency eigenvalue, where the HL-index measures how large in absolute value may be the median eigenvalues of a graph. We finally propose some problems for further study.

Abstract:Distance-regular graphs are a key concept in Algebraic Combinatorics and have given rise to several generalizations, such as association schemes. Motivated by spectral and other algebraic characterizations of distance-regular graphs, we study `almost distance-regular graphs'. We use this name informally for graphs that share some regularity properties that are related to distance in the graph. For example, a known characterization of a distance-regular graph is the invariance of the number of walks of given length between vertices at a given distance, while a graph is called walk-regular if the number of closed walks of given length rooted at any given vertex is a constant. One of the concepts studied here is a generalization of both distance-regularity and walk-regularity called $m$-walk-regularity. Another studied concept is that of $m$-partial distance-regularity or, informally, distance-regularity up to distance $m$. Using eigenvalues of graphs and the predistance polynomials, we discuss and relate these and other concepts of almost distance-regularity, such as their common generalization of $(\ell,m)$-walk-regularity. We introduce the concepts of punctual distance-regularity and punctual walk-regularity as a fundament upon which almost distance-regular graphs are built. We provide examples that are mostly taken from the Foster census, a collection of symmetric cubic graphs. Two problems are posed that are related to the question of when almost distance-regular becomes whole distance-regular. We also give several characterizations of punctually distance-regular graphs that are generalizations of the spectral excess theorem.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma=\Gamma(A)$ denote a simple strongly connected digraph with vertex set $X$, diameter $D$, and let $\{A_0,A:=A_1,A_2,\ldots,A_D\}$ denote the set of distance-$i$ matrices of $\Gamma$. Let $\{R_i\}_{i=0}^D$ denote a partition of $X\times X$, where $R_i=\{(x,y)\in X\times X\mid (A_i)_{xy}=1\}$ $(0\le i\le D)$. The digraph $\Gamma$ is distance-regular if and only if $(X,\{R_i\}_{i=0}^D)$ is a commutative association scheme. In this paper, we describe the combinatorial structure of $\Gamma$ in the sense of equitable partition, and from it we derive several new algebraic characterizations of such a graph, including the spectral excess theorem for distance-regular digraph. Along the way, we also rediscover all well-known algebraic characterizations of such graphs.

On Structural and Spectral Properties of Distance Magic Graphs

Abstract:A graph $G=(V,E)$ is said to be distance magic if there is a bijection $f$ from a vertex set of $G$ to the first $|V(G)|$ natural numbers such that for each vertex $v$, its weight given by $\sum_{u \in N(v)}f(u)$ is constant, where $N(v)$ is an open neighborhood of a vertex $v$. In this paper, we introduce the concept of $p$-distance magic labeling and establish the necessary and sufficient condition for a graph to be distance magic. Additionally, we introduce necessary and sufficient conditions for a connected regular graph to exhibit distance magic properties in terms of the eigenvalues of its adjacency and Laplacian matrices. Furthermore, we study the spectra of distance magic graphs, focusing on singular distance magic graphs. Also, we show that the number of distance magic labelings of a graph is, at most, the size of its automorphism group.

Abstract:For a connected graph, the distance spectral radius is the largest eigenvalue of its distance matrix, and the distance energy is defined as the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of its distance matrix. We establish lower and upper bounds for the distance spectral radius of graphs and bipartite graphs, lower bounds for the distance energy of graphs, and characterize the extremal graphs. We also discuss upper bounds for the distance energy.

Abstract:In 1971, Graham and Pollak provided a formula for the determinant of the distance matrix of any tree on $n$ vertices. Yan and Yeh reproved this by exploiting the fact that pendant vertices can be deleted from trees without changing the remaining entries of the distance matrix. Considering failures of their argument to generalize invites the question: which graphs have the property that deleting any one vertex results in a change to some pairwise distance? We refer to such worst-case graphs as ``distance critical''. This work explores the structural properties of distance critical graphs, preservation of distance-criticality by products, and the nature of extremal distance critical graphs. We end with a few open questions.
