Abstract:In this paper, we study the q -distance matrix for a distance-regular graph and show that the q -distance matrix of a distance-regular graph with classical parameters (D,q,α,β) has exactly three distinct eigenvalues, of which one is zero. Moreover, we study distance-regular graphs whose q -distance matrix has exactly one positive eigenvalue.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify non-geometric distance-regular graphs of diameter at least $3$ with smallest eigenvalue at least $-3$. This is progress towards what is hoped to be an eventual complete classification of distance-regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue at least $-3$, analogous to existing classification results available in the case that the smallest eigenvalue is at least $-2$.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify distance regular graphs such that all of its second largest local eigenvalues are at most one. Also we discuss the consequences for the smallest eigenvalue of a distance-regular graph. These extend a result by the first author, who classified the distance-regular graph with smallest eigenvalue $-1-\frac{b_1}{2}$.

Abstract:In this paper we systematically study various properties of the distance graph in ${\Bbb F}_q^d$, the $d$-dimensional vector space over the finite field ${\Bbb F}_q$ with $q$ elements. In the process we compute the diameter of distance graphs and show that sufficiently large subsets of $d$-dimensional vector spaces over finite fields contain every possible finite configurations.

Abstract:A graph $G$ with $d+1$ distinct eigenvalues is called strongly distance-regular if $G$ itself is distance-regular, and its distance-$d$ graph $G_d$ is strongly-regular. In this note we provide a spectral characterization of those distance-regular graphs with diameter $d=4$ which are strongly distance-regular. As a byproduct, it is shown that all bipartite strongly distance-regular graphs with such a diameter are antipodal.

Abstract:For a distance-regular graph $\Gamma$ of diameter 3, the graph $\Gamma_i$ can be strongly regular for $i=2$ or 3. J.Kulen and co-authors found the parameters of a strongly regular graph $\Gamma_2$ given the intersection array of the graph $\Gamma$ (independently, the parameters were found by A.A. Makhnev and D.V.Paduchikh). In this case, $\Gamma$ has an eigenvalue $a_2-c_3$. In this paper, we study graphs $\Gamma$ with strongly regular graph $\Gamma_2$ and eigenvalue $\theta=1$. In particular, we prove that, for a $Q$-polynomial graph from a series of graphs with intersection arrays $\{2c_3+a_1+1,2c_3,c_3+a_1-c_2;1,c_2,c_3\}$, the equality $c_3=4 (t^2+t)/(4t+4-c_2^2)$ holds. Moreover, for $t\le 100000$, there is a unique feasible intersection array $\{9,6,3;1,2,3\}$ corresponding to the Hamming (or Doob) graph $H(3,4)$. In addition, we found parametrizations of intersection arrays of graphs with $\theta_2=1$ and $\theta_3=a_2-c_3$.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ denote a distance-regular graph with diameter $D \geq 2$. Let $E$ denote a primitive idempotent of $\Gamma$ with respect to which $\Gamma$ is $Q$-polynomial. Assume that there exists a $3$-clique $x,y,z$ such that $E\hat{x},E\hat{y},E\hat{z}$ are linearly dependent. In this paper, we classify all the $Q$-polynomial distance-regular graphs $\Gamma$ with the above property. We describe these graphs from multiple points of view.

Finite Fields and Their Applications

Abstract:Let q = p e , where p is a prime and e is a positive integer. The family of graphs D ( k , q ) , defined for any positive integer k and prime power q, were introduced by Lazebnik and Ustimenko in 1995. To this day, the connected components of the graphs D ( k , q ) , provide the best known general lower bound for the size of a graph of given order and given girth. Furthermore, Ustimenko conjectured that the second largest eigenvalue of D ( k , q ) is always less than or equal to 2 q . If true, this would imply that for a fixed q and k growing, D ( k , q ) would define a family of expanders that are nearly Ramanujan. In this paper we prove the smallest open case of the conjecture, showing that for all odd prime powers q, the second largest eigenvalue of D ( 5 , q ) is less than or equal to 2 q .

Abstract:A design graph is a regular bipartite graph in which any two distinct vertices of the same part have the same number of common neighbors. This class of graphs have a close relationship to strongly regular graphs. In this paper, we study the distance eigenvalues of the design graphs. Also, we will explicitly determine the distance eigenvalues of a class of design graphs, and determine the values for which the class is distance integral, that is, its distance eigenvalues are integers.

Abstract:The characterization of distance-regular Cayley graphs originated from the problem of identifying strongly regular Cayley graphs, or equivalently, regular partial difference sets. In this paper, a classification of distance-regular Cayley graphs on dicyclic groups is obtained. More specifically, it is shown that every distance-regular Cayley graph on a dicyclic group is a complete graph, a complete multipartite graph, or a non-antipodal bipartite distance-regular graph with diameter $3$ satisfying some additional conditions.

Abstract:Distance-regular graphs are a key concept in Algebraic Combinatorics and have given rise to several generalizations, such as association schemes. Motivated by spectral and other algebraic characterizations of distance-regular graphs, we study `almost distance-regular graphs'. We use this name informally for graphs that share some regularity properties that are related to distance in the graph. For example, a known characterization of a distance-regular graph is the invariance of the number of walks of given length between vertices at a given distance, while a graph is called walk-regular if the number of closed walks of given length rooted at any given vertex is a constant. One of the concepts studied here is a generalization of both distance-regularity and walk-regularity called $m$-walk-regularity. Another studied concept is that of $m$-partial distance-regularity or, informally, distance-regularity up to distance $m$. Using eigenvalues of graphs and the predistance polynomials, we discuss and relate these and other concepts of almost distance-regularity, such as their common generalization of $(\ell,m)$-walk-regularity. We introduce the concepts of punctual distance-regularity and punctual walk-regularity as a fundament upon which almost distance-regular graphs are built. We provide examples that are mostly taken from the Foster census, a collection of symmetric cubic graphs. Two problems are posed that are related to the question of when almost distance-regular becomes whole distance-regular. We also give several characterizations of punctually distance-regular graphs that are generalizations of the spectral excess theorem.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of distance mean-regular graph, which can be seen as a generalization of both vertex-transitive and distance-regular graphs. Let $\Gamma$ be a graph with vertex set $V$, diameter $D$, adjacency matrix $A$, and adjacency algebra ${\cal A}$. Then, $\Gamma$ is $distance$ $mean$-$regular$ when, for a given $u\in V$, the averages of the intersection numbers $p_{ij}^h(u,v)=|\Gamma_i(u)\cap \Gamma_j(v)|$ (number of vertices at distance $i$ from $u$ and distance $j$ from $v$) computed over all vertices $v$ at a given distance $h\in \{0,1,\ldots,D\}$ from $u$, do not depend on $u$. In this work we study some properties and characterizations of these graphs. For instance, it is shown that a distance mean-regular graph is always distance degree-regular, and we give a condition for the converse to be also true. Some algebraic and spectral properties of distance mean-regular graphs are also investigated. We show that, for distance mean regular-graphs, the role of the distance matrices of distance-regular graphs is played for the so-called distance mean-regular matrices. These matrices are computed from a sequence of orthogonal polynomials evaluated at the adjacency matrix of $\Gamma$ and, hence, they generate a subalgebra of ${\cal A}$. Some other algebras associated to distance mean-regular graphs are also characterized.

Abstract:Let G be a connected graph on n vertices with diameter d . It is known that if 2≤d≤n−2 , there are at most n−d Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval [n−d+2,n] . In this paper, we show that if 1≤d≤n−3 , there are at most n−d+1 Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval [n−d+1,n] . Moreover, we try to identify the connected graphs on n vertices with diameter d , where 2≤d≤n−3 , such that there are at most n−d Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval [n−d+1,n] .

Abstract:In this note, we show how the determinant of the q-distance matrix Dq(T) of a weighted directed graph G can be expressed in terms of the corresponding determinants for the blocks of G, and thus generalize the results obtained by Graham et al. [R.L. Graham, A.J. Hoffman and H. Hosoya, On the distance matrix of a directed graph, J. Graph Theory 1 (1977) 85-88]. Further, by means of the result, we determine the determinant of the q-distance matrix of the graph obtained from a connected weighted graph G by adding the weighted branches to G, and so generalize in part the results obtained by Bapat et al. [R.B. Bapat, S. Kirkland and M. Neumann, On distance matrices and Laplacians, Linear Algebra Appl. 401 (2005) 193- 209]. In particular, as a consequence, determinantal formulae of q-distance matrices for unicyclic graphs and one class of bicyclic graphs are presented.

Abstract:In [Distrance-regular Cayley graphs on dihedral groups, J. Combin. Theory Ser B 97 (2007) 14--33], Miklavi\v{c} and Poto\v{c}nik proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs, which can be viewed as an extension of the problem of identifying strongly regular Cayley graphs, or equivalently, regular partial difference sets. In this paper, all distance-regular Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}\oplus\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ with $p$ being an odd prime are determined. It is shown that every such graph is isomorphic to a complete graph, a complete multipartite graph, or the line graph of a transversal design $TD(r,p)$ with $2\leq r\leq p-1$.

Abstract:Earlier it was proved that some distance-regular graphs of diameter 3 with c_2=2 do not exist. Distance-regular graph with intersection array {17,16,10;1,2,8} has strongly regular graph _3 (pseudo-geometric graph for the net pG_9(17,9) ). By symmetrizing the arrays of triple intersection numbers, it is proved that the distance-regular graphs with intersection arrays {17,16,10;1,2,8} and {22,21,4;1,2,14} do not exist.

Abstract:For a connected graph, the distance spectral radius is the largest eigenvalue of its distance matrix, and the distance energy is defined as the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of its distance matrix. We establish lower and upper bounds for the distance spectral radius of graphs and bipartite graphs, lower bounds for the distance energy of graphs, and characterize the extremal graphs. We also discuss upper bounds for the distance energy.
