Abstract:Let G be a connected graph of order n. The diameter of a graph is the maximum distance between any two vertices of G. In this paper, we will give some bounds on the diameter of G in terms of eigenvalues of adjacency matrix and Laplacian matrix, respectively.

Abstract:Let G be a connected graph on n vertices with diameter d . It is known that if 2≤d≤n−2 , there are at most n−d Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval [n−d+2,n] . In this paper, we show that if 1≤d≤n−3 , there are at most n−d+1 Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval [n−d+1,n] . Moreover, we try to identify the connected graphs on n vertices with diameter d , where 2≤d≤n−3 , such that there are at most n−d Laplacian eigenvalues in the interval [n−d+1,n] .

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$. It is known that any Laplacian eigenvalue of $G$ belongs to the interval $[0,n]$. For an interval $I\subseteq [0, n]$, denote by $m_GI$ the number of Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$ in $I$, counted with multiplicity. When $G$ is connected, known results on the Laplacian eigenvalue distribution related to the diameter $d$ of $G$ include: $m_G[n-d+2,n]\le n-d$ if $2\le d\le n-3$ and $m_G[n-d+1,n]\le n-d+1$ if $1\le d\le n-3$. In this paper, we show that $m_G[n-d,n]\le n-d+2$ if $2\le d\le n-4$, and $m_G[n-2d+4,n]\le n-2$ if $2\le d\le \lfloor\frac{n}{2} \rfloor$.

Abstract:Let G be a simple graph with n vertices, m edges, diameter D and degree sequence d(1), d(2), ..., d(n), and let lambda(1)(G) be the largest Laplacian eigenvalue of G. Denote Delta = max{d(i) : 1 <= i <= n}, ((alpha)t)(i) = Sigma(i similar to j) d(j)(alpha) and ((alpha)m)(i) = ((alpha)t)(i)/d(i)(alpha), where alpha is a real number. In this article, we first give an upper bound on lambda(1)(G) for a non-regular graph involving Delta and D; next present two upper bounds on lambda(1)(G) for a connected graph in terms of d(i) and ((alpha)m)(i); at last obtain a lower bound on lambda(1)(G) for a connected bipartite graph in terms of d(i) and ((alpha)t)(i). Some known results are shown to be the consequences of our theorems.
A complete characterization of graphs for which $m_G(-1) = n-d-1$

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple connected graph of order $n$ with diameter $d$. Let $m_G(-1)$ denote the multiplicity of the eigenvalue $-1$ of the adjacency matrix of $G$, and let $P = P_{d+1}$ be the diameter path of $G$. If $-1$ is not an eigenvalue of $P$, then by the interlacing theorem, we have $m_G(-1)\leq n - d - 1$. In this article, we characterize the extremal graphs where equality holds. Moreover, for the completeness of the results, we also characterize the graphs $G$ that achieve $m_G(-1) = n - d - 1$ when $-1$ is an eigenvalue of $P$. Thus, we provide a complete characterization of the graphs $G$ for which $m_G(-1) = n - d - 1$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple connected graph. We use $n(G)$, $p(G)$, and $\eta(G)$ to denote the number of negative eigenvalues, positive eigenvalues, and zero eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix $A(G)$ of $G$, respectively. In this paper, we prove that $2n(G)\geq d(G) + 1$ when $d(G)$ is odd, and $n(G) \geq \lceil \frac{g}{2}\rceil - 1$ for a graph containing cycles, where $d(G)$ and $g$ are the diameter and girth of the graph $G$, respectively. Furthermore, we characterize the extremal graphs for the cases of $2n(G) = d(G) + 1$, $n(G) = \lceil \frac{g}{2}\rceil$, and $n(G) = \lceil \frac{g}{2}\rceil - 1$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite simple non-complete connected graph on $[n] = \{1, \ldots, n\}$ and $\kappa(G) \geq 1$ its vertex connectivity. Let $f(G)$ denote the number of free vertices of $G$ and $\mathrm{diam}(G)$ the diameter of $G$. The final goal of this paper is to determine all sequences of integers $(n,f,d,k)$ with $n\geq 8$, $f\geq 0$, $d\geq 2$ and $k\geq 1$ for which there exists a finite simple non-complete connected graph on $[n]$ with $f=f(G)$, $d=\mathrm{diam}(G)$ and $k=\kappa(G)$.

Abstract:For a graph $G$, let $\lambda_2(G)$ denote the second largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of $G$. We determine the extremal trees with maximum/minimum adjacency eigenvalue $\lambda_2$ in the class $\mathcal{T}(n,d)$ of $n$-vertex trees with diameter $d$. This contributes to the literature on $\lambda_2$-extremization over different graph families. We also revisit the notion of the spectral center of a tree and the proof of $\lambda_2$ maximization over trees.

Abstract:The Aα -matrix of a graph G is defined as the convex linear combination of the adjacency matrix A(G) and the diagonal matrix of degrees D(G) , i.e. Aα(G)=αD(G)+(1−α)A(G) with α∈[0,1] . The maximum modulus among all Aα -eigenvalues is called the Aα -spectral radius. In this paper, we order the connected graphs with size m and diameter (at least) d from the second to the (⌊d2⌋+1) th regarding to the Aα -spectral radius for α∈[12,1) . As by-products, we identify the first ⌊d2⌋ largest trees of order n and diameter (at least) d in terms of their Aα -spectral radii, and characterize the unique graph with at least one cycle having the largest Aα -spectral radius among graphs of size m and diameter (at least) d . Consequently, the corresponding results for signless Laplacian matrix can be deduced as well.

Abstract:For a connected graph $G$ with order $n$, let $e(G)$ be the number of its distinct eigenvalues and $d$ be the diameter. We denote by $m_G(\mu)$ the eigenvalue multiplicity of $\mu$ in $G$. It is well known that $e(G)\geq d+1$, which shows $m_G(\mu)\leq n-d$ for any real number $\mu$. A graph is called $minimal$ if $e(G)= d+1$. In 2013, Wang (\cite{WD}, Linear Algebra Appl.) characterize all minimal graphs with $m_G(0)=n-d$. In 2023, Du et al. (\cite{Du}, Linear Algebra Appl.) characterize all the trees for which there is a real symmetric matrix with nullity $n-d$ and $n-d-1$. In this paper, by applying the star complement theory, we prove that if $G$ is not a path and $m_G(\mu)= n-d$, then $\mu \in \{0,-1\}$. Furthermore, we completely characterize all minimal graphs with $m_G(-1)=n-d$.

Abstract:The spectral radius of a graph is the largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. A minimizer graph is such that minimizes the spectral radius among all connected graphs on n vertices with diameter d. The minimizer graphs are known for d∈{1,2}∪[n/2,2n/3−1]∪{n−k|k=1,2,…,8}. In this paper, we determine all minimizer graphs for d=2(n−1)/3.

Abstract:Let G be a finite connected undirected graph and (G) over right arrow a strong orientation of G. The diameter of (G) over right arrow, denoted by diam((G) over right arrow), is the maximum directed distance between any two vertices of (G) over right arrow. The oriented diameter of G is defined as (diam) over right arrow (G) = min{diam((G) over right arrow)vertical bar(G) over right arrow is a strong orientation of G}. In this paper, we show that (diam) over right arrow (G) <= inverted right perpendicularn/2inverted left perpendicular. for any maximal outerplanar graph G of order n >= 3, with four exceptions, and the upper bound is sharp.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$, the Engel graph of $G$ is a directed graph $\Gamma(G)$ encoding pairs of elements satisfying some Engel word. Namely, $\Gamma(G)$ is the directed graph, where the vertices are the non-hypercentral elements of $G$ and where there is an arc from $x$ to $y$ if and only if $[x,_ n y] = 1$ for some $n \in \mathbb{N}$. From previous work, it is known that, except for a few exceptions, $\Gamma(G)$ is strongly connected. In this paper, we give an absolute upper bound on the diameter of $\Gamma(G)$, when $\Gamma(G)$ is strongly connected.

Abstract:For a connected graph $G$ with order $n$, let $e(G)$ represent the number of its distinct eigenvalues, and let $d$ denote its diameter. We denote the eigenvalue multiplicity of $\mu$ in $G$ by $m_G(\mu)$. It is well established that the inequality $e(G) \geq d + 1$ implies that when $\mu$ is an eigenvalue of $P_{d+1}$, it follows that $m_G(\mu) \leq n - d$; otherwise, for any real number $\mu$, we have $m_G(\mu) \leq n - d - 1$. A graph is termed minimal if $e(G) = d + 1$. In 2013, Wong et al. characterized all minimal graphs for which $m_G(0) = n - d$. In this article, we provide a complete characterization of the graphs $G$ such that $m_G(0) = n - d - 1$.

The connectivity index R-alpha(G) of a graph G is the sum of the weights (d(u)d(v))(alpha) of all edges uv of G, where alpha is a real number (alpha not equal 0), and d(u) denotes the degree of the vertex u. In this paper, we present some new bounds for the connectivity index of a graph G in terms of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix or adjacency matrix of the graph G, from which we can get some known results.

Abstract:For a connected graph, the distance spectral radius is the largest eigenvalue of its distance matrix, and the distance energy is defined as the sum of the absolute values of the eigenvalues of its distance matrix. We establish lower and upper bounds for the distance spectral radius of graphs and bipartite graphs, lower bounds for the distance energy of graphs, and characterize the extremal graphs. We also discuss upper bounds for the distance energy.

Abstract:For a simple graph $G$, the $2$-distance graph, $D_2(G)$, is a graph with the vertex set $V(G)$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if their distance is $2$ in the graph $G$. In this paper, for graphs $G$ with diameter 2, we show that $diam(D_2(G))$ can be any integer $t\geqslant2$. For graphs $G$ with $diam(G)\geqslant3$, we prove that $\frac{1}{2}diam(G)\leqslant diam(D_2(G))$ and this inequality is sharp. Also, for $diam(G)=3$, we prove that $diam(D_2(G))\leqslant5$ and this inequality is sharp.
