Abstract:Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite, simple, connected, combinatorial graph on $n$ vertices and let $D \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n}$ be its graph distance matrix $D_{ij} = d(v_i, v_j)$. Steinerberger (J. Graph Theory, 2023) empirically observed that the linear system of equations $Dx =\mathbf{1}$, where $\mathbf{1} = (1,1,\dots, 1)^{T}$, very frequently has a solution (even in cases where $D$ is not invertible). The smallest nontrivial example of a graph where the linear system is not solvable are two graphs on 7 vertices. We prove that, in fact, counterexamples exists for all $n\geq 7$. The construction is somewhat delicate and further suggests that such examples are perhaps rare. We also prove that for Erdős-Rényi random graphs the graph distance matrix $D$ is invertible with high probability. We conclude with some structural results on the Perron-Frobenius eigenvector for a distance matrix.

Abstract:Distance-regular graphs have many beautiful combinatorial properties. Distance-transitive graphs have very strong symmetries, and they are distance-regular, i.e. distance-transitivity implies distance-regularity. In this paper, we give similar results, i.e. for special $s$ and graphs with other restrictions we show that $s$-distance-transitivity implies distance-regularity.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma=\Gamma(A)$ denote a simple strongly connected digraph with vertex set $X$, diameter $D$, and let $\{A_0,A:=A_1,A_2,\ldots,A_D\}$ denote the set of distance-$i$ matrices of $\Gamma$. Let $\{R_i\}_{i=0}^D$ denote a partition of $X\times X$, where $R_i=\{(x,y)\in X\times X\mid (A_i)_{xy}=1\}$ $(0\le i\le D)$. The digraph $\Gamma$ is distance-regular if and only if $(X,\{R_i\}_{i=0}^D)$ is a commutative association scheme. In this paper, we describe the combinatorial structure of $\Gamma$ in the sense of equitable partition, and from it we derive several new algebraic characterizations of such a graph, including the spectral excess theorem for distance-regular digraph. Along the way, we also rediscover all well-known algebraic characterizations of such graphs.

Abstract:We introduce the concept of distance mean-regular graph, which can be seen as a generalization of both vertex-transitive and distance-regular graphs. Let $\Gamma$ be a graph with vertex set $V$, diameter $D$, adjacency matrix $A$, and adjacency algebra ${\cal A}$. Then, $\Gamma$ is $distance$ $mean$-$regular$ when, for a given $u\in V$, the averages of the intersection numbers $p_{ij}^h(u,v)=|\Gamma_i(u)\cap \Gamma_j(v)|$ (number of vertices at distance $i$ from $u$ and distance $j$ from $v$) computed over all vertices $v$ at a given distance $h\in \{0,1,\ldots,D\}$ from $u$, do not depend on $u$. In this work we study some properties and characterizations of these graphs. For instance, it is shown that a distance mean-regular graph is always distance degree-regular, and we give a condition for the converse to be also true. Some algebraic and spectral properties of distance mean-regular graphs are also investigated. We show that, for distance mean regular-graphs, the role of the distance matrices of distance-regular graphs is played for the so-called distance mean-regular matrices. These matrices are computed from a sequence of orthogonal polynomials evaluated at the adjacency matrix of $\Gamma$ and, hence, they generate a subalgebra of ${\cal A}$. Some other algebras associated to distance mean-regular graphs are also characterized.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the q -distance matrix for a distance-regular graph and show that the q -distance matrix of a distance-regular graph with classical parameters (D,q,α,β) has exactly three distinct eigenvalues, of which one is zero. Moreover, we study distance-regular graphs whose q -distance matrix has exactly one positive eigenvalue.

Abstract:The problem of constructing or characterizing strongly regular Cayley graphs (or equivalently, regular partial difference sets) has garnered significant attention over the past half-century. In [European J. Combin. 24 (2023) 777--784], Miklavič and Potočnik expanded upon this field, achieving a complete characterization of distance-regular Cayley graphs over cyclic groups by employing the method of Schur rings. In [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 97 (2007) 14--33], they formally proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs for any given class of groups. In this context, abelian groups are of particular importance, as a considerable number of distance-regular graphs with classical parameters are precisely Cayley graphs over abelian groups. In this paper, we address the Miklavič-Potočnik problem for abelian groups of rank $2$. More specifically, we identify all distance-regular Cayley graphs over the group $\mathbb{Z}_n \oplus \mathbb{Z}_p$, where $p$ is an odd prime. Our proof utilizes novel tools such as polynomial addition sets, Desarguesian affine planes, and the duality of Schur rings over abelian groups.

Abstract:Let On(Q) and Sn(Z) be the set of all n by n orthogonal matrices with rational entries and the set of all n by n symmetric matrices with integer entries, respectively. We consider the following question: Given A∈Sn(Z). When does QTAQ∈Sn(Z) with Q∈On(Q) imply that Q is a signed permutation matrix? Wang and Yu [15] show that the answer to the above question is yes whenever the discriminant Δ(A) of the characteristic polynomial of A is odd and square-free. However, the above result cannot be applied for the adjacency matrix of a simple graph, since Δ(A) can never be odd in this situation. We give a new condition under which the answer is still yes for the adjacency matrices of graphs. The result was achieved by employing some tools from our recent work on the generalized spectral characterizations of graphs, which is somewhat unexpected. Some applications of the above result are also provided.

Abstract:Highly-regular graphs can be regarded as a combinatorial generalization of distance-regular graphs. From this standpoint, we study combinatorial aspects of highly-regular graphs. As a result, we give the following three main results in this paper. Firstly, we give a characterization of a distance-regular graph by using the index and diameter of a highly-regular graph. Secondly, we give two constructions of highly-regular graphs. Finally, we generalize well-known properties of the intersection numbers of a distance-regular graph.

Abstract:Distance-regular graphs are a class of regualr graphs with pretty combinatorial symmetry. In 2007, Miklavič and Potočnik proposed the problem of charaterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs, which can be viewed as a natural extension of the problem of characterizing strongly-regular Cayley graphs (or equivalently, regular partial difference sets). In this paper, we provide a partial characterization for distance-regular Cayley graphs over semi-dihedral groups and pseudo-semi-dihedral groups, both of which are $2$-groups with a cyclic subgroup of index $2$.

Abstract:Steinerberger proposed a notion of curvature on graphs (J. Graph Theory, 2023). We show that nonnegative curvature is almost preserved under three graph operations. We characterize the distance matrix and its null space after adding an edge between two graphs. Let $D$ be the graph distance matrix and $\mathbf{1}$ be the all-one vector. We provide a way to construct graphs so that the linear system $Dx = \mathbf{1}$ does not have a solution. Let $\eta$ be the Perron eigenvector of $D.$ We provide a lower bound to $\langle\eta,\mathbf{1}\rangle$ when the graph is a tree.

Theory Ser B 97 (2007) 14--33], Miklavi\v{c} and Poto\v{c}nik proposed the problem of characterizing distance-regular Cayley graphs, which can be viewed as an extension of the problem of identifying strongly regular Cayley graphs, or equivalently, regular partial difference sets. In this paper, all distance-regular Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_{p^s}\oplus\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ with $p$ being an odd prime are determined. It is shown that every such graph is isomorphic to a complete graph, a complete multipartite graph, or the line graph of a transversal design $TD(r,p)$ with $2\leq r\leq p-1$.

Abstract:A design graph is a regular bipartite graph in which any two distinct vertices of the same part have the same number of common neighbors. This class of graphs have a close relationship to strongly regular graphs. In this paper, we study the distance eigenvalues of the design graphs. Also, we will explicitly determine the distance eigenvalues of a class of design graphs, and determine the values for which the class is distance integral, that is, its distance eigenvalues are integers.

Abstract:Let G be a connected graph with distance matrix be the diagonal matrix of vertex transmissions of G. For any , the -matrix of G is defined as D-alpha(G) = alpha Tr(G) + (1 - alpha) D(G). In this paper, we study the -spectra of graphs. Firstly, the -eigenvalues of some special graphs are presented. Then we give a lower bound on the kth smallest -eigenvalue of graphs, and the extremal graphs are characterized. Also, several graph transformations on the -spectral radius are given, as applications, some extremal graphs with given structure parameters are characterized. Finally, we give some properties when two graphs have the same -spectra and several graphs are proved to be determined by their -spectra.

Abstract:Distance-regular graphs are a key concept in Algebraic Combinatorics and have given rise to several generalizations, such as association schemes. Motivated by spectral and other algebraic characterizations of distance-regular graphs, we study `almost distance-regular graphs'. We use this name informally for graphs that share some regularity properties that are related to distance in the graph. For example, a known characterization of a distance-regular graph is the invariance of the number of walks of given length between vertices at a given distance, while a graph is called walk-regular if the number of closed walks of given length rooted at any given vertex is a constant. One of the concepts studied here is a generalization of both distance-regularity and walk-regularity called $m$-walk-regularity. Another studied concept is that of $m$-partial distance-regularity or, informally, distance-regularity up to distance $m$. Using eigenvalues of graphs and the predistance polynomials, we discuss and relate these and other concepts of almost distance-regularity, such as their common generalization of $(\ell,m)$-walk-regularity. We introduce the concepts of punctual distance-regularity and punctual walk-regularity as a fundament upon which almost distance-regular graphs are built. We provide examples that are mostly taken from the Foster census, a collection of symmetric cubic graphs. Two problems are posed that are related to the question of when almost distance-regular becomes whole distance-regular. We also give several characterizations of punctually distance-regular graphs that are generalizations of the spectral excess theorem.
