Abstract:Hydrate growth is influenced by many factors, including thermodynamics, kinetics, mass and heat transfer, and so on. There is thus a practical significance in establishing a model that comprehensively considers these influencing factors for hydrate crystal growth in multiphase transportation pipelines. On this basis, this paper presents a more practical and comprehensive bidirectional growth model of hydrate shells for an actual pipeline system. Thermodynamic phase equilibrium theory and water molecule penetration theory are applied in this model to develop a method for calculating the concentration change of hydrate-forming guest molecules and the permeation rate of water molecules. The temperatures on both sides of the hydrate shell are predicted by the heat transfer model. Simultaneously, decreasing the mass transfer coefficient with continuous hydrate growth is used to describe the problem in which the mass transfer efficiency decreases with a thickened hydrate shell. Then, the hydrate growth kinetic parameters of the pipeline system are optimized according to hydrate growth experiments conducted in a high-pressure flow loop and the microscopic characteristics of the particles were provided using the PVM and FBRM probes. The improved hydrate growth model can improve the prediction accuracy of hydrate formation in slurry systems.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Unlike conventional oil and gas sources, natural gas hydrate (NGH) is stored in solid form within the pores of loose submarine sediments. Production by any method poses a complex problem involving phase transition and multi-phase flow of gas and water. The evolution of hydrate dissociation from the solid phase to gas and liquid phases in a hydrate reservoir is a dynamic process incorporating pore structure and multi-phase seepage. The solid–gas-liquid phase dissociation of NGH affects reservoir seepage properties by altering the micropore structure of the hydrate-bearing sediments. This study, based on the lattice Boltzmann method of modeling fluids flow, clearly demonstrates the micropore-scale changes in pressure and heat transfer that take place during hydrate dissociation. Pore-scale heterogeneity is found to influence the complex development of hydrates in a porous clayey silt medium during dissociation. The effect of hydrate, gas and water saturation on the evolution of relative permeability is identified, and the relationship between relative permeability and hydrate saturation during hydrate dissociation is quantified. These findings provide theoretical support for the implementation of marine natural gas hydrate production testing and future commercial production in China.

Abstract:In order to improve the operation safety of the multiphase flow in the subsea pipelines and facilitate the development of deep-sea oil and gas resources, the evolution process of different hydrate deposits has been studied based on high-pressure reactors and focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM). The results show that larger hydrate formation (6% vt hydrate concentration) can form layered deposits but smaller (3% vt hydrate concentration) corresponding to the suspended slurry, and the reduction rate of the fixed bed thickness is greater than the moving bed. Microscopic images show that the downward transportation of pore water dominates the evolution process when the moisture content is higher than 87%. The evolution mathematical model of hydrate deposit thickness which is based on Darcy’s law is in good agreement with the experimental results, proving the properties of porous media in hydrate deposits. The migration rate and permeability of porous hydrate particles are positively related to the particle size, both showing a linear relationship at the microscopic scale. The deposits with a uniform particle size distribution are more difficult to stratify and thus more suspended, which is conducive to the safety of pipeline transportation compared with the layered deposits. On these bases, the mechanism and mathematical model of hydrate deposit stratification and evolution are established.

Abstract:In this paper, Euler models suitable for hydrate slurry flow were established based on the particle dynamics theory. The results showed that the distribution of the velocity, particle concentration and turbulent kinetic energy in the curved pipe was more asymmetrical than that in the straight pipe due to the continuously changing flow field direction. The velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and particle concentration all increased with the increase of inlet velocity. The particle concentration gradient increased with the increase of the inlet particle volume fraction. The increase of particle size led to the increase of velocity heterogeneity and concentration gradient. The pressure drop factor along the pipeline increased with the increase of velocity, particle concentration and particle size, the pressure drop factor across the pipeline of 1.2 m/s was 78.08% higher than 0.5 m/s. It was found that the change of flow direction or the connection of different pipeline structure was the danger point of pipeline aggregation. Finally, based on the grey correlation analysis, the fluctuation of pressure drop factor was most affected by particle size, followed by particle concentration and velocity. The study provided reasonable suggestions and measures for practical pipeline transportation technology to avoid operational risks.

Abstract:The environmental conditions of high pressure and low temperature in deep water have brought serious challenges to the safe operation of oil–gas mixture transportation in pipeline due to hydrate blockage. This paper was focused on the effects of water cut, polymerization inhibitor concentration, and temperature on the viscosity of natural gas hydrate slurry, and established the a rheological model of hydrate slurry with the help of a high-pressure reactor and a rheometer. The results showed that the increase in water cut could significantly improve the apparent viscosity of hydrate slurry. The apparent viscosities were 20 mPa s at 30% water cut and about 15 mPa s at 15% water cut. The increase in polymerization inhibitor concentration would also increase the apparent viscosity of the slurry. When the concentration of polymerization inhibitor increased from 0 wt% to 3 wt%, the slurry viscosity was increased by 4.9%. As for the temperature, the apparent viscosity of the slurry was inversely proportional to the temperature. When the temperature increased from 3 °C to 5 °C, the viscosity was decreased by 5.9%. The sensitivity analysis showed that the water cut had the greatest influence on the apparent viscosity. In addition, the natural gas hydrate slurry showed typical shear dilution in the experimental system. According to the viscosity characteristics of hydrate slurry in the high-pressure reactor system, an empirical prediction model based on Camago–Palermo model was established. The predicted value from the model had an error less than 3.5% comparing to the experimental value, which meant that the model had a high accuracy.

Abstract:Natural gas hydrates have attracted many attentions recently as a promising energy, the exploitation of which will cause complicated multifield coupled behavior of hydrate-bearing sediments. As sediments usually vary from tens to hundreds of meters, the gravity effect on gas-liquid migration and soil deformation may not be completely ignored. This paper develops a new thermo-hydro-chemo-mechanical model to investigate the sediment behavior during the hydrate dissociation. The equations of gas-liquid migration are numerical solved with explicit incorporation of hydrate dissociation process. The numerical stability and efficiency have been improved by expanding the Taylor series of the source terms and making the first-order approximation. Furtherly, pre-calculation procedures have been considered to obtain the initial state of field variables. Pilot-scale model results show that the gas-liquid migration, soil deformation and NGH dissociation are accelerated when the gravity effect is present. During the exploitation, a dissociation front can be observed, and gas-liquid migration and hydrate dissociation dominate the process alternatively, leading to first decrease and subsequent increase of gas saturation and continuous rise of liquid saturation. Moreover, it is inferred that marginal enhancement of gas production can be achieved with the increase of wellbore lengths, but it should not exceed 75% of the reservoir thickness.

Abstract:Hydrate formation, aggregation, and deposition have become major hazards for the safe transportation of oil and gas pipelines. Although there has been a great deal of research into the behavior of particles during hydrate formation and transport, there is less research into the multiphase generation and flow characteristics of hydrate gas and liquids. In this paper, the flow characteristics of hydrate slurry and the flow pattern transition in gas–liquid multiphase system were studied, and the generations of it were compared between a gas–liquid multiphase system and oil–water emulsion system. The results showed that the flow parameters such as pressure, pressure drop, and density fluctuated more drastically in the gas–liquid system than that in the emulsion system, the higher fluctuation meant a higher risk of pipe plugging. At the same time, the influence of pressure and dosage on multiphase flow pattern transformation and boundary change conditions were studied. A gas-slurry flow pattern transformation diagram was drawn based on the defined transformation conditions between flow patterns. The results also indicated that, with the increase of pressure from 5 to 6 MPa, the boundary of slug flow and air mass flow changed to the direction of higher gas and liquid flow velocity. While the boundary of slug flow and wave flow, stratified flow and wave flow changed to the direction of higher gas flow velocity. The boundary of slug flow and air mass flow changed to the direction of lower liquid flow velocity. In contrast, the boundary of slug flow and wave flow, stratified flow and wave flow, slug flow and stratified flow changed to the direction of higher gas flow velocity and lower liquid flow velocity in the 1% inhibitor period compared with that without the inhibitor. This study will provide theoretical references and technological supports for the safety of multiphase transportation pipelines and the safety of deep water production.

Abstract:The research on the multiphase flow characteristics of hydrate slurry is the key to implementing the risk prevention and control technology of hydrate slurry in deep-water oil and gas mixed transportation system. This paper established a geometric model based on the high-pressure hydrate slurry experimental loop. The model was used to carry out simulation research on the flow characteristics of gas-liquid-solid three-phase flow. The specific research is as follows: Firstly, the effects of factors such as slurry flow velocity, hydrate particle density, hydrate particle size, and hydrate volume fraction on the stratified smooth flow were specifically studied. Orthogonal test obtained particle size has the most influence on the particle concentration distribution. The slurry flow velocity is gradually increased based on stratified smooth flow. Various flow patterns were observed and their characteristics were analyzed. Secondly, increasing the slurry velocity to 2 m/s could achieve the slurry flow pattern of partial hydrate in the pipeline transition from stratified smooth flow to wavy flow. When the flow rate increases to 3 m/s, a violent wave forms throughout the entire loop. Based on wave flow, as the velocity increased to 4 m/s, and the flow pattern changed to slug flow. When the particle concentration was below 10%, the increase of the concentration would aggravate the slug flow trend; if the particle concentration was above 10%, the increase of the concentration would weaken the slug flow trend, the increase of particle density and liquid viscosity would weaken the tendency of slug flow. The relationship between the pressure drop gradients of several different flow patterns is: slug flow > wave flow > stratified smooth flow.

Abstract:With the extension of oil exploitation from offshore to the deep sea, the development and utilization of natural gas hydrate have become one of the hottest energy issues. However, the agglomeration between hydrate particles will lead to severe pipeline hydrate plugging. Therefore, a dynamic model considering phase change about hydrate formation and decomposition as well as aggregation was proposed based on the interface area transportation equation and convection heat transfer equation, and then used to simulate hydrate slurry flow in this study. By integrating with traditional solid-liquid flow models, the aggregation, breakage, nucleation of hydrate particles, and deposits insulation were all considered in CFD software OpenFOAM-4.x. The influences of flow rate and the safe area for hydrate slurry flow were analyzed emphatically. Results show that flushing has a good dissociation effect on hydrate deposits formed by low-concentration slurry. By comparing deposition conditions of different concentrations and flow rates, it can be seen that high-concentration slurry results in a larger slope and thickness of the deposition front, while the flow rate mainly affects the extension of the deposits length. With the increase of the flow rates, the hydrate deposits evolve from belt-like deposits to point-like deposits. In addition, the hydrate deposition morphology function of different working conditions was constructed by the principal component analysis method.

Abstract:The formation and decomposition of methane hydrates, particularly in porous media such as subsea sediments, have attracted significant research interest due to their implications for energy production, storage, and safety in deep-sea environments. This study explores the process and characteristics of methane hydrates formation and decomposition using microfluidic technology to mimic natural conditions. By incorporating methylene blue, we enhanced phase differentiation, identifying five hydrate types: block, vein, point, membrane, and shell. These forms were influenced by the presence and movement of free gas, which shaped their development. Block and vein hydrates mainly formed in water-filled pores, while point and membrane hydrates appeared as coatings related to gas migration. Shell hydrates formed after gas relocation, filling pores. During dissociation, the presence of free gas accelerated the process significantly, with a dissociation rate approximately 12 times faster than with water alone. Gas migration was key in accelerating hydrate breakdown and fragment formation. This research offers critical insights into methane hydrate behavior, aiding in optimizing natural gas extraction and preventing deep-sea pipeline blockages.

Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the fluid flow mechanism during CH4 hydrate dissociation in nanoscale clayey sediments from the molecular perspective can provide invaluable information for macroscale natural gas hydrate (NGH) exploration. In this work, the fluid flow behaviors of the decomposed gas from CH4 hydrate within clayey nanopores under different temperature conditions are revealed by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The simulation results indicate that the key influencing factors of gas-water flow in nanoscale clayey sediments include the diffusion and the random migration of gas molecules. The influencing mechanisms of fluid flow in nanopores are closely related with the temperature conditions. Under a low temperature condition, the gas diffusion process is impeded by the secondary hydrate formation, leading to the decline in gas transport velocity within nanopores. However, it is still noteworthy that the gas-water fluid flow channels are not completely blocked by the occurrence of secondary hydrate. Under a high temperature condition, the significant phenomenon of water migration during gas flow is observed, which can be ascribed to the gas-liquid entrainment effect in nanopores of the clayey sediment. These results may provide valuable implications and fundamental evidence for improving gas production efficiency in future field tests of NGH exploitation in marine sediments.
In-situ investigation on methane hydrate decomposition characteristics under variational seawater flow process

Abstract:Natural gas hydrates (NGHs) are a form of natural gas widespread in the seafloor, and the realization of commercial exploitation is of great significance to solve the energy problem. There must be large amount of seawater and gas migration during the hydrate exploitation process. Studies have shown that seawater flow at a constant flow rate will enhance hydrate exploitation, especially at high flow rates. However, the seawater flow rate varies as a result of different seawater saturation in different areas of hydrate reservoir. There is little research on the effects of variational flow rate on hydrate decomposition characteristics. In this study, the effects of step-up flow rate and step-down flow rate modes on hydrate decomposition were investigated using the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. The experimental results showed that the flowing seawater filled the pores that were occupied by free gas or generated by hydrate decomposition, which is beneficial to maintain the hydrate reservoir stability during the exploitation process. Through comprehensive comparison, the energy consumption of the variational flow rate mode was more than 60% less than that of the constant flow rate mode. For low hydrate saturation (22.5%), large seawater flow rate maintained a large driving force (fugacity difference) for hydrate decomposition, the efficiency of step-down flow rate mode was 131.1% greater than the efficiency of step-up mode; for high hydrate saturation (36.5%), low seawater flow rate made the mass transfer between seawater and hydrate more sufficient, the efficiency of step-up mode was 40.6% greater than that of step-down mode.

Abstract:Gas hydrates pose impeded flow risks and serious safety hazards in oil and gas transportation pipelines. This makes it imperative to look for appropriate hydrate control strategies. In this study, the hydrate slurry flow characteristics were investigated under multiphase flow conditions using a high-pressure fully visual flow loop. At different liquid loadings and mixture velocities, pressure drop variations were monitored from the initial hydrate formation to deposition and bedding, and the flow patterns were observed throughout the experiments. It was found that the hydrate slurry flow may involve four stages of hydrate formation, agglomeration, deposition and bedding prior to pipeline blockage. The effective volume and water conversion fractions were also obtained at different stages. The results showed that the lower liquid loading causes quicker and more severe hydrate blockage problem mainly due to more mass transfer of gas into water hence higher water conversion rate. Moreover, lower mixture velocity resulted in a higher hydrate bedding tendency. The results also confirmed further formation and deposition of gas hydrates due to a drastic temperature drop immediately after the liquid flow stopped in the system. In addition, the flow characteristics in sloped pipe sections (both upslope and downslope) were studied to investigate the effect of driving forces on the hydrate deposition. Slug flow was observed in the upslope while stratified flow in the downslope. Furthermore, hydrate accumulation tends to occur in the transition position between the horizontal pipes and the sloped pipes due to the effect of gravity.
Pore scale modeling on dissociation and transportation of methane hydrate in porous sediments

Abstract:Fundamental study on the pore scale dissociation and transportation mechanism of methane hydrate in porous sediments contributes to understanding the heat and mass transfer in the multiple physicochemical and thermal processes. This paper proposes a novel enthalpy-porosity technique coupling with volume of fraction (VOF) method for modeling the phase-change process of the hydrate dissociation and the multi-phase flow. The mathematical models are programed by C language and used as the subroutine for the commercial FLUENT software. The proposed theoretical model is validated by comparison with the experiment and numerical modeling in literature. The distribution of fluid saturation, velocity and temperature in the MH dissociation are presented, analyzed and discussed comparatively. As the first effort in literature, the proposed model can properly simulate the effects of the phase change on the pore structure evolution, multiphase flow, heat and mass transfer and kinetic reaction process in porous media in real-time. Both the normalized permeability of water (KNw) and the normalized absolute permeability (KN) of the porous media with different hydrate saturation are acquired and analyzed comparatively with the results in the previous studies. This study provides a new insight into pore scale modeling on the multiphase flow with phase change.

Abstract:Summary Depressurization (PD) and thermal stimulation (TS) are the primary methods for producing gas from natural gas hydrate (NGH) sediments. Fluid flow properties of the hydrate sediment, such as permeability, are fundamental parameters for simulating both processes. Most of the existing formulated permeability models are based on the numerical or experimental investigation of hydrate morphology evolution without considering the decomposition methods. In this study, we investigate the hydrate-decomposition-methods (PD and TS processes)-dependent fluid flow properties of hydrate sediments, which is achieved by microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) scanning of hydrate morphology evolution during PD- and TS-induced decomposition, as well as pore-scale modeling of fluid flow in the extracted 3D fluid-rock-hydrate images. We find that the decomposition behavior during TS is much more complicated than that during PD. The retardation zone in the PD sample increases the heterogeneity of the pore structure, while the secondary hydrates generated during TS cause even more heterogeneity in the pore space. The better facilitation of the TS method on hydrate split is favorable for the continuity of the gas phase. The pore-scale fluid flow simulation shows that the modified Kozeny-Carman (K-C) model is the best to describe the evolution of the normalized permeability with hydrate saturation during PD. However, a single model is not sufficient to describe the normalized permeability during TS decomposition due to the stronger heterogeneous porous structure reformed by the local accumulation of secondary hydrates. The two-phase flow capability is best at the initial stage of PD decomposition, while the two-phase flow region becomes wider as TS decomposition progresses. These results provide significant references for the simulation of the natural hydrate extraction process using different decomposition methods.

Abstract:It is proved by the long-term exploration that natural gas hydrate generally occurs within fine-grained sediments, and its stability is controlled by a number of physical, chemical and geological factors, such as temperature, pressure, pore water composition, and so on. Recent experimental studies have shown that the stability of gas hydrate in pore space with various pore structures is distinguished evidently from that of bulk one. Pore structures of host sediments significantly affect the formation and dissociation of gas hydrate, as well as wettability of pore surface. We summarize the latest experiments reported in literatures and discuss the possible influence mechanism of pore structure and wettability of inner surfaces on the stability of gas hydrates confined in pores. It is proposed that establishing an integrated thermodynamics model of methane hydrates in pore spaces with various radii, and investigating the pore structure and surface properties of hydrate-bearing sediments would advance the prediction, exploration and evaluation of gas hydrate resources. At the same time, it is of importance for methane storage and transportation.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, marine hydrate has attracted more and more attentions. As a creative way to efficiently exploit marine hydrate, the method of solid fluidization exploitation is to excavate and crush hydrate, transport hydrate particles to sea surface platform through airtight pipeline, and obtain methane gas finally. When hydrate particles are transported up, as temperature rises and pressure drops, hydrate will decompose at a certain critical position and produce a large amount of gas, bringing complicated gas‐liquid‐solid multiphase non equilibrium pipe flow, and seriously threating well control securities. Thus, we establish mathematical models of wellbore temperature and pressure, hydrate phase equilibrium, hydrate dynamic decomposition in riser pipe flow and wellbore multiphase flow coupling hydrate dynamic decomposition, and propose and verify numerical calculation method. Then numerical model application analysis under different construction parameters is carried out, influence behaviors of multiphase non equilibrium pipe flow are obtained, and field construction measures are put forward. Properly increasing solid throughput can increase production of natural gas. However, problems such as well control risks will intensify. Therefore, delivery capacity, liquid density, and wellhead back pressure should be increased appropriately at the same time. This study provides important technical support for solid fluidization exploitation of marine hydrate.

Abstract:This paper introduces the mechanism of formation and inhilbition of natural gas hydrates, as well as several models for prediction of gas hydrate formation. The problems storing and transporting natural gas in hydrate form are discussed, and the hydrate promoter's mechanism and its effects on hydrate formation rate, storage capacity are presented. The study of exploiting and utilizing natural gas hydrate resource is introduced, as well as a new method conversing the hydrates into liquid fuels.

Abstract:In this paper, based on sediment with gas hydrate and flow characteristics for gas hydrate decomposition, the interaction and density difference between the phases are considered, conventional lattice Boltzmann model is modified to new lattice Boltzmann model then is applied to study flow characteristics for gas hydrate decomposition in sediment. The method is the mesoscopic model between macro and micro methods between. Modification lattice Boltzmann model is applied to carry out a complex micro-channel single-phase, multiphase flow simulation analysis, single-phase flow in porous media for gas hydrate decomposition. The results show that complex micro-channel flow field depends on the micro-channel roughness, bending degree, surface wet ability, fluid properties and other media. Single-phase flow in porous media depends on the pore diameter (saturation) and permeability of the sediment and the hydrate formation in the sediment so greatly reduces the permeability of porous media.

Abstract:Natural gas hydrates are a potential future energy modality with the advantages of clean burning and large resource reserves and have attracted worldwide attention. Natural gas hydrates formation and dissociation impact the skeletal structure and mechanical properties of porous media sediments. In addition, there is a synergistic effect between the migration of fine clay particles in porous media and hydrate behavior. In this study, methane hydrate was examined in-situ using a low-field nuclear magnetic resonance system in the presence of two suspensions of clay particles with different stability. The results showed that clay particles impacted methane hydrate formation and dissociation and the pore structure of porous media. Hydrate nucleated preferentially in large pores, causing them to split into smaller pores; the presence of clay particles, especially illite, improved the water conversion rate. The results indicated that water content in large pores increased after hydrate dissociation but was discontinuous among different pores. When illite was present, the distribution was more continuous; when montmorillonite was present, the water distribution of the large pores was similar to that of the original state. This work increases our understanding of the kinetics, water migration, and pore structure alteration of methane hydrate formation and dissociation in sediments with clay particles and provides support for the safe and efficient development of natural gas hydrates.
