Abstract:This Fifth International WEIN Symposium is devoted to physics beyond the standard model. This talk is about tau lepton physics, but I begin with the question: do we know how to find new physics in the world of elementary particles? This question is interwoven with the various tau physics topics. These topics are: searching for unexpected tau decay modes; searching for additional tau decay mechanisms; radiative tau decays; tau decay modes of the W, B, and D; decay of the Z^0 to tau pairs; searching for CP violation in tau decay; the tau neutrino, dreams and odd ideas in tau physics; and tau research facilities in the next decades.

Tau lepton production and decays: perspective of multi-dimensional distributions and Monte Carlo methods

Abstract:Status of tau lepton decay Monte Carlo generator TAUOLA, its main applications and recent developments are reviewed. It is underlined, that in recent efforts on development of new hadronic currents, the multi-dimensional nature of distributions of the experimental data must be taken with a great care: lesson from comparison and fits to the BaBar and Belle data is recalled. It was found, that as in the past at a time of comparisons with CLEO and ALEPH data, proper fitting, to as detailed as possible representation of the experimental data, is essential for appropriate developments of models of tau decay dynamic. This multi-dimensional nature of distributions is also important for observables where tau leptons are used to constrain experimental data. In later part of the presentation,use of the TAUOLA program for phenomenology of W,Z,H decays at LHC is addressed, in particular in the context of the Higgs boson parity measurements. Some new results, relevant for QED lepton pair emission are mentioned as well.

Lepton-flavor-violating Tau Decays from Triality

Abstract:Motivated by flavor symmetry models, we construct theories based on a low-energy limit featuring lepton flavor triality that have the flavor-violating decays tau +/- -> mu +/-mu +/- eand tau +/- -> e +/- e +/-mu as the main phenomenological signatures of physics beyond the standard model. These decay modes are expected to be probed in the near future with increased sensitivity by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider. The simple standard model extensions featured have doubly charged scalars as the mediators of the above decay processes. The phenomenology of these extensions is studied here in detail.

Abstract:This is a review of rare and forbidden decays of the $\tau$ lepton. For the rare decays, this includes new results on the chiral anomaly decay $\taupietapio$, new upper limits on the second-class-current decay $\taupieta$, and the observations of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $\tauketa$ and the internal conversion decay $\taueee$. For the forbidden decays, there are new upper limits on the radiative decays $\tauegamma$ and $\taumugamma$. Some forbidden decays which have not been previously searched for are also suggested.

Abstract:The status of Monte Carlo system for the simulation of tau-lepton production and decay in high-energy accelerator experiments is reviewed. Since previous tau-lepton conference in 2008 some practical modifications have been introduced: (i) For the TAUOLA Monte Carlo generator of tau-lepton decays, automated and simultaneous use of many versions of form-factors for the calculation of optional weights for fits was developped and checked to work in Belle and BaBar software environment. Work on alternative paramterizations of hadronic decays is advanced. (ii) the TAUOLA universal interface based on HepMC (the C++ event record) is now public. A similar interface for PHOTOS is now also public. (iii) Extension of PHOTOS Monte Carlo for QED bremsstrahlung in decays featuring kernels based on complete first order matrix element are gradually becoming widely available thanks to properites of the new, HepMC based interface. (iv) Tests of the programs systematized with the help of MC-TESTER are now available for FORTRAN and C++ users. Presented here results illustrate the status of the projects performed in collaboration with Nadia Davidson, Piotr Golonka, Gizo Nanava, Tomasz Przedzinski, Olga Shekhovtsova, El zbieta Richter-Was, Pablo Roig, Qingjun Xu and others.

Abstract:A brief review is made of some of the experimental signatures that may be associated to a certain class of extensions of the standard model. The material of these lectures is divided into two sections. After briefly sketching the present observational status of the neutrino masses I consider various schemes of neutrino mass generation, including those which are motivated by present experimental hints from solar and atmospheric neutrinos, as well as cosmological data on the amplitude of primordial density fluctuations. Then some of the physics motivations and potential of various extensions of the standard model related to the electroweak breaking sector, such as supersymmetry, and extensions of the gauge boson sector are reviewed. The new signatures associated with both types of extension may all be accessible to experiments performed either at accelerators or at underground installations. The complementarity between these two approaches in the search for signals beyond the standard model is most vividly manifest in the field of neutrino physics.

Abstract:The status of implementation of new hadronic currents into the Monte Carlo system for simulation of tau-lepton production and decay in high-energy accelerator experiments is reviewed. Since the tau-lepton conference in 2010 substantial progress was achieved: (i) For the TAUOLA Monte Carlo generator of tau-lepton decays, automated and simultaneous use of many versions of form factors for the calculation of optional weights for fits was developed and checked to work in the Belle and BaBar software environment. Alternative parameterizations of hadronic currents based on the Resonance Chiral approach are available now. This was achieved for more than 88% of the total tau hadronic width. (ii) the TAUOLA universal interface based on HepMC (the C++ event record) is available. This is the case for C++ users of PHOTOS Monte Carlo for radiative corrections in decays, as well. An algorithm for weighted events to explore spin effects in analysis of hard processes was prepared. (iii) Kernels featuring a complete first-order matrix element are available now for PHOTOS users interested in decays of Z and W bosons. New tests with different options of matrix elements for those and for Kl3 decays are available as well. Presented results illustrate the status of the projects performed in collaboration with Zofia Czyczula, Nadia Davidson, Tomasz Przedzinski, Olga Shekhovtsova, Elzbieta Richter-Was, Pablo Roig, Qingjun Xu and others.

Abstract:Hadronic decays rates of the $\tau$ lepton into multi meson final states are presented. The structure of the hadronic matrix elements for various decay modes is discussed. The formalism of structure functions allows for a detailed test of these matrix elements. Various correlations are discussed which are sensitive to possible CP violation and new physics effects in the decay modes.

Abstract:The τ decay library TAUOLA has been enriched. The present version of the program includes more than twenty decay channels, including: (a) leptonic modes τ- → nνe- → nνμ-(γ), (b) one-meson modes: νπ-, νK-, (c) t wo-meson modes: νπ- π0(ϱ-), νK0π- (K∗-), νK- π0(K∗-), (d) three-meson modes: νπ-2ν 0(a-1), ν2π-π+ (a-1), νK+ K- π-, ν K̄0K0π-, νK- K̄0π0, νK- π0π0, νK- π-π+, νK0π0π-, νηπ-π 0, (e) four-pion modes: νπ-3π0, ν2π-π+π0 (including the ωπ- contribution), (f) multi-pion modes: νnπ±,0 with n > 4, and finally the decay τ- → νπ- π0γ from the ω → πγ.Complete O(α) QED corrections are included in the leptonic decay channels, and for other decay channels an interface is provided to the PHOTOS Monte Carlo generator for approximate simulation of the QED corrections. An interface to the τ pair production generators KORALB and KORALZ is also included. Final-state MC events are coded in the common block proposed by the Particle Data Group.

Lepton Number Violating Four-body Tau Decay

Abstract:This paper is designed discuss four-body lepton number violating tau decay. We study the processes $tau^+ to e^+ e^+ pi^- nu_tau$ and $tau^+ to e^+ e^+ pi^- nu_e$ determine the nature of neutrino. The first process violates lepton number by two units which can only happen through an internal Majorana. The second one conserves lepton number but violates lepton flavor which can take place with both Majorana neutrino and Dirac neutrino. We calculate their branching ratio $Br$ and differential branching ratio $dBr/dE_pi$ distinguish Majorana neutrino vs. Dirac neutrino. We also propose the possibility of experiment perform this detection.

Abstract:The conditions for the independence of decays of the spin-1/2 resonances on the production mechanism of the resonances and on polarizations of the incoming and outgoing particles are derived and applied in the case of several tau-lepton decays. The necessity for inclusion of the influence of the production mechanism in the evaluation of the lepton flavour violating decays is stressed.

Abstract:This write-up is intended to form part of the proceedings for Lepton-Photon 2023. We review the decays $b\rightarrow c \ell \bar \nu_\ell$ (where $\ell \in \{e,\mu,\tau\}$) as well as $b\rightarrow s \mu^+ \mu^-$ and $b\rightarrow s e^+ e^-$, giving the current state-of-the-art in terms of measurements. We review fits to such data of new physics weak effective field theory operators, before closing with interpretations in terms of simplified TeV-scale field theories.

Abstract:Both CDF and Dempty set report a forward-backward asymmetry in t (t) over bar production that is above the standard model prediction. We review new physics models that can give a large forward backward asymmetry in t (t) over bar production at the Tevatron and the constraints these models face from searches for dijet resonances and contact interactions, from flavor physics and the t (t) over bar cross section. Expected signals at the LHC are also reviewed.

Abstract:A sizable excess with respect to the SM expectation has been reported recently by the BaBar collaboration in the decay rates B -> D(*) Tau Nu, normalized by the corresponding light lepton modes. A violation of lepton flavor universality as suggested by this excess could be due to a charged Higgs mediating these processes at tree level. In this talk we analyze the implications of the observed excess within the framework of two-Higgs-doublet models, considering also the bounds from other semileptonic and leptonic decays of B and D(s) mesons. Prospects for B -> D(*) Tau Nu decays at future Super-Flavor Factories are also discussed.

Abstract:This paper reviews results of beyond-the-standard model searches at the Tevatron presented in a plenary talk at the Europhysics Conference on High Energy Physics (EPS-HEP) in Grenoble. Here I present a selection of results from the CDF and D0 experiments that were shown at the conference during the parallel sessions. Much more is available and can be found at the experiment's web pages. This proceeding essentially focuses on searches in the dilepton, diboson, and t-tbar final states. Throughout the paper, hints of new physics observed at the Tevatron are also briefly discussed.
